      True, but trying to pawn Marina off while already pregnant was as much of a gamble as anything Lord Featherington did. In those days a favorite pastime of gossips was counting backwards from the birth to estimate when the baby was conceived. If Marina gave birth to a fully-developed infant after just 6-7 months of marriage then the entire ton would have quickly deduced what really happened and the scandal would have returned in force. At least Daphne was sensible in focusing effort on finding Sir George.

    Okay ngl but I actually really love Lady Featherington. In an interview, her actress said that she's just trying to survive in her world and I can kind of see that. Plus, I love how dramatic she can be, and her witticisms can be quite funny. (Of course, your added commentary only helps there!) She may not be as iconic as Lady Danbury or the Queen, or as soft as Violet Bridgerton, but the people and situations she's dealing with are also very different, and I liked that she was able to take her husband to task, something no one in the series but Daphne was really able to do.

      Agree, she didn’t have a good marriage like Violet and she does lover her children and wants them secured and happy. She knew her girls would be in huge problems if it came out that Marina was pregnant and she was right.
      If Violet would have had another girl under her wings for the season she wouldn’t have been happy about that girl being more liked then her own child.
      Writing the letter was cruel, but knowing her story I wouldn’t say it was done out of malice.

      She's not really a villainess in the classic sense. That said, I do think that she can be very superficial and that causes many of the very problems that she faces. For example, she berates her daughters more than she encourages them. Ironically, this is why they are not as graceful as the Bridgerton daughters, who were raised to be less flamboyant and more subdued. Plus, her taste in fashion is very gaudy. If Violet Bridgerton is Laura Ashley, then Portia Featherington is Donatella Versace.

I think that while she isn't _kind_ to Ms. Thompson, she's trying to look out for her as well. She may not like her, they may not vibe, but she's trying to make sure she is provided for. And of course, reduce the impact of the bad reputation on her own daughters, which to me is understandable. I enjoy her quite a lot! Except that Lady Bridgerton was more respected because she possessed social graces. Lady Featherington was just a malicious gossip with bad taste in fashion. Her daughters really are not unattractive. But she has neither taught them how to dress properly nor given much thought to their deportment. This is why her poorly-choreographed presentation of her daughters to the Queen became a debacle, as contrasted to Daphne's carefully-prepared debut that was likely rehearsed many times before she had to actually do it for real.

  • @anyili3196
    @anyili3196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1557

    Honestly I don’t like Marina’s attitude about this whole thing. Yes, she can stand on her ground absolutely unashamed about falling in love and conceiving a child out of passion, and I would love her every bit for it. The society is cruel, and she should never be judged.
    But every action has consequences. If she chooses to rebel against societal standards, then she must have the gut and honor to bear the consequences. And she certainly has no right to drag others like Penelope, Philippa, and Prudence who only ever wanted a simple life with husband and children into her little rebellion.
    Ok let’s say she should’ve never bore any consequences, and she is just an imperfect human who has weaknesses. If she wants to find security for her child and herself, we can all understand, and the men whom only want heirs can provide that. And she acting superior about social consciousness or work for a living when Lady Featherington took her to the city and her later actions are simply self-contradictory and ridiculous.
    And add on to that let’s say that she should still be able to find love no matter what. I absolutely agree. But she never loved Colin, she simply picked him out as an easy target. She wants to be and be seen together with a dashing, rich, well-connected man whose sister just became a duchess who is kind and honorable enough to never harm her even if cheated. She doesn’t care whether Colin and the Bridgertons ever deserved that. She wants to be able to show off and be envied in the society which she always disapproves. This is so clear in the scene that she triumphantly discusses introducing Colin’s friends to the Featherington girls and gloats about changing their fortunes as they flatter her for her newly-found power and status. And she absolutely doesn’t say all that out of kindness. If she truly intended to introduce guys to the Featherington girls, she could have simply made an effort to include them in conversations when her dozens of suitors called. Instead, she didn’t do anything or felt bad in anyway and let the girls who are hosting her to sit silent like wallflowers.
    And even if we say that’s also just “human.” The worst part is that in the process she never showed any remorse, gave any sincere apology, or expressed honest thanks to what she has done to and received from Colin, the Bridgertons, and the Featherington girls like Penelope, who has been nothing but absolute kindness to her. And she has the gut and the conscience to lecture and snap at Daphne, Colin, and Penelope on naivety, love, and choice. Literally the only thing Colin thought was to protect and defend her after she dragged him and his family into shame, and she snaps at him without any apology. Penelope has been helping her every step of the way, and she jabs at her for loving Colin unrequitedly. Daphne, who was once her competitor in the marriage market, was kind enough to help her back into society and find her soldier after she has cheated and hurt Daphne’s brother and dragged Daphne’s family into shame, and she snaps at Daphne and attacks her as being naive. Everyone here is making the truly difficult choices to be right, loving, compassionate, understanding, honorable, and absolutely kind, except for her. She was never sincerely nice or even any bit polite to anyone, unless she wants them to do something for her. I would honestly like her much more if she was any big truly sorry about Colin and expresses any honest gratitude to Daphne and Penelope.

      While I understand your points, I feel like you're going a bit too deep into this, so much so that I feel you're ignoring some other parts that contradict what you're saying. Deep in a sense unfair to the truth that Marina was dealing with very distressing issues - then slapping on the narrative that she wasn't grateful in the end. I can recount multiple scenes where Marina (s1) apologized to Penelope, fullheartedly, while Penelope was busy basically ruining Marina's life. Marina is fortunate that Penelope's little crush attitude didn't go as far as most expected it to, given Penelope basically backstabbed Marina. Take it as you will, but Penelope very well could have, rather than hiding behind Whistledown, told Colin directly. If you're going to jab a life-changing truth, especially one with very real consequences (even if Marina is "unready"), then you might as well be an honest person rather than a backstabbing scheming shlonk.
      I like Penelope's character, but I don't agree with treating Marina as purely as what Penelope "equally" enacted throughout s1's entirety. As much as Penelope will be there for her friends, if you get in the middle of her little crush, she's already proven that she has no *sympathy* to destroying you through Whistledown, or backstabbing you in some other way. You can't just ignore that to diss Marina, they both have their flaws, but the whole point (in which I felt was vital to s1) was how Penelope is powerful. Besides other reasons to have Marina on the show, why not prove Penelope's flaws as a great way to embrace that power in it's complete viciousness? Backstab your friend because of a crush, and hide behind the idea that you're ruining your friend for the better good. Again, she could've sucked it up and said it straight in Colin's face. Instead, she rushed to Whistledown as the first method.
      Secondly, Marina wasn't lying to Lady Featherington. She was truthful in that all that'd been provided was well appreciated, even if the second hand motive was to push for marrying Colin. Or perhaps I mistook that scene for more than it's surface, but you get my point.
      Your points make it sound like Penelope was a sweet sweet person, ignoring the vital and viscous flaws of Penelope's character. Simultaneously making Marina out to be a complete maneater whose an ungrateful brat. Agree to disagree, but I don't believe you've really given much fairness in your points, and they sound more biased the longer I've read on.

    Actually she isn't such a bad mother. She has three daughters, an absent husband and no son to inherit the title and properties, even though it's pretty fictional she lives in the 19th Century, the only way for her daughters to be respected and live a good life is to marry well. Marina brought her lots of problems, it's a scandal that a girl in those days was pregnan out of wedlock, and scandal means bad reputation for her family and her daughters.
    To be honest I think her to be a better parent than Violet Bridgerton who was so focused on the duke ("There is only the duke" who was not in a hurry to marry her daughter) and couldn't even explain what happens after the marriage. Yes, of course Simon knows about the loss of virginity, it's common knowledge among the men, pff.

    I love her more than any of the mothers because she believes in being real and practical. The woman has 3 daughters with an incompitent man as her husband who she can do nothing about so whatever she's doing its just practical and something any mother with daughters and half a brain cell would do to make sure they are happy and fortified.

      Not at all. She's a very entertaining character and also, I really felt bad for her most of the time. She just wanted the best for her daughters but she has to deal with an incompetent and gambling husband, a young pregnant cousin and an elite who could marginalize her family at any time just because of a bad gossip. You had no choice but to admire a woman who tries to survive in a merciless chain of circumstances.

    Let’s give lady featherington a break here. She has to deal with a gambling husband, a relative who is pregnant that she’s trying to marry off before anyone finds out, three daughters who she hopes to get married (one whose dowry is constantly being questioned by the cheese loving fiancé’s parents), not to mention one of her daughters is Lady Whistledown and gossips about her own family to society. Plus now she has the new Lord Featherington coming to town. Lady Featherington has her hands full!

      There was this scene almost at the end of the series in which Octavian berates Octavia for cavorting with Agrippa in which he says:

      a big difference between the Bridgeton and Featheringtons is that while Lady Bridgeton lost her husband, she has more than one son to inherit the title. Lady Featherington is not being horrible she is just being realistic that when her husband dies a male relative will probably come and take over and they will be at their mercy as is shown in season 2.

    Lady Featherington was a moron for introducing all her daughters in the same season. They essentially became each others competition as well as everyone else's and it's just bad planning to try and get them all married at once. The eldest must have been held back for a few years to make this happen, though I suspect that was Lord Featherington trying to keep them out of London so he could gamble in peace and leave them at home.

  • @anyili3196
    @anyili3196 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    The actor who plays Lady Featherington. Marvelous performances. Honestly I really think she did the best she could, and is really just a mother who is trying to protect her daughters and a woman who is trying to survive in an unfriendly world.
    Marina is pregnant without being married, and she isn’t even someone who is actually close to Lady Featherington or the girls. Yet if she is discovered to have a child while living under the Featherington’s roof, it would be assumed that she acted under Lord and Lady Featherington’s shepheron. If they can’t ensure Marina’s “virtue,” how can they be trusted to ensure Philippa, Prudence, and Penelope’s? It will be assumed that they can also have lovers without anyone knowing, and no one wants to be in Colin’s and the Bridgerton’s position. The Featheringtons, without an heir to the title, would have to live on the new baron’s kindness after the Lord dies. The new baron could turn them out anytime they wish, and very likely that will happen as soon as he takes up residence or plans to marry. After all, if a man lives under the same roof with 3 Featherington girls and an widely-known ambitious mama whose reputations are ruined, gossips about affairs would certainly rise.
    About hiding Marina’s letters, the war with France is not ending anytime soon. So even if Marina’s soldier truly wants to marry her, the scandal still wouldn’t be prevented. And more, in regular circumstances, who in their right mind would believe a man who had “acted” with Marina enough to the point that she is pregnant and still hasn’t proposed ever truly had the intention to marry Marina? Yes, he return the letters, but letters are easy to write. In most cases, if he wanted to propose, he could’ve well done that when he first compromised her, and they would’ve been married before he left for France. Given Lord Featherington wouldn’t send Marina back as a sign of disproval due to his debts, quickly marrying Marina off to someone who desperately want heirs and wouldn’t question the child’s parentage is pretty much the only solution. And they are certainly not going to be young, dashing men from good backgrounds with good manners and habits. It was Marina’s own plan to get Colin.
    Daphne is only able to help them because she is now a newly wed duchess and a leader in society whom no one dares to cross. If this was discovered before she married Simon, she wouldn’t be able to even to go near the girls, because she will be tainted by associations. Or even if she is a duchess who has daughters of or near marriage age, it would also be assumed that she approves these sorts of actions, and her daughters will suffer.

    Both mothers who had only daughters, both married distant men, both frightened about what might happen to them and their daughter's after their husband's death leaves them penniless so they're desperate to find good husbands for their daughters to help financially support the family, both very much disliked by the reader/viewer because of their attitudes despite having relatable if not terrifying motives, both are huge gossips...the list goes on really. Her husband was useless, her family isn’t as wealthy as most others, and none of her daughters are noticed by a lot of people because of what they wear. It’s understandable why she tries so hard to get them decent matches because all she’s trying to do is secure a future for herself and her girls. She may not be the most affectionate mother but she is still a mother who does care about her daughters. And I respect her for it.
