There might be several reasons for this to happen. Brake fluid will go bad after a while and should circled trough the system at set intervals with new fresh fluid. Are you running hard lines all the way from the masters to the point where you have the flexible lines to the calipers? Those need to be as close you can get them. Also are you running flexible brake lines that can handle high heat? Your exhaust system is very close. You should consider shielding your entire brake system from the exhaust as it's pretty close to everything as the radiant heat is very high at full pull. And check your calipers, pads and rotors for any drag and damage. Luckely you have a chute. I have had brake failure on a track car due to overheating at 160+mph at the end of a straight away and it's not fun when you need to make a turn. Thank god that there was a good run off zone there. Love the videos, keep em comming :)
Atleast you are alright all that matters could have been bad. I wonder if on the decel if it forced the fluid away from the holes enough to suck air in like how it will do with oil in the pan?
If that 10psi drag is all at that front right I'd say it got so hot before you even hit the break it had to of let the fluid straight around the seal makes sense why you had breaks after it cooled and the seal shrunk but you could see smoke coming in front before the turbo
Normaly the brake pressure should be near zero so the breakpad can retract so much that a air cushion builds up between the pad and the disk. That is important to cool the disk otherwise the brake system takes the heat and refuses it's dutys. I think there is something off with the main zylinder or pedal. Warped disks would result in oszilating pressure on your log-readings. Maybe it is somthing simple like a damged or never installed spring. Remember, you put the car in secounds to a amount of stress other cars did not experience in there whole life. ;) And I know the feeling from racing with shifter-karts when you at 6th gear, full throtle coming from the straight to a hairpin turn and your brake pedal is entering the void. Many good comments about moisture in the system. I also agree with checking how close the brake lines are to hot exhaust parts. One I didn’t see is pulling the parachutes before applying the brakes. I don’t know how much air space is in your brake fluid reservoir, but if the fluid is a little low and you pull the chutes, you might uncover the intake port on the master cylinder and push air into the system.
One way the old DOT3 fluid was better was that a little water didn't boil an push all the fluid out. But it was nasty stuff that ate paint, held on to water and corroded everything it touched. I have always wondered why we never came up with something that could just slightly raise the boiling point when contaminated that was not as awful as DOT3.
Good thought with the moisture and all that. BUT if this was the problem, he should have made FULL pressure when he initially hit the brakes. Then they would begin to fade. They will not act like they did in his case because he already had no pressure when he stepped on it. So the problem was already there before the end of the pass. You might be right with uncovering the port of the master cylinder. Although I don't think it was because of the parachutes. It probably was the other way round. Fluid gets pushed back through the acceleration. Depending on the design of the reservoir and if the port is in the middle of the reservoir or at the front. If the port is located in the middle, it can get uncovered by pulling the chutes , but the fluid level would need to be extremely low. I think it's more likely to uncover it under acceleration when you have the port at the front of the reservoir. But I assume the FIRST THING he did after he went rallying was to CHECK THE RESERVOIR. So he's probably right about the residual brake pressure causing him to drag the brakes all the way down the track. That caused his fluid to boil before he even stepped on the pedal. I'm almost sure the tbm rotors are just machined flat. OEM's manufacture their rotors with a little runout to push the pads away from the rotor when you'r not using the brake. Without this runout the piston gasket would be the only thing that pulls piston and pad away from the rotor. If the whole assembly is not absolutely 100% new and clean then the gasket will not have enough force to pull everything away from the rotor. Maybe there was moisture involved, but first of all there shouldn't be 17psi of brake pressure when he's going down the track. Especially with flat machined rotors that are not ventilated!

Steve I’m glad all worked out for the most part . Minimal damage to the hot rod and you’re safe. I’ve been the starter at 131 for quite a few years and it’s always great having you and your team attend .
Most brakefluids take moisture (overtime), that moisture can Boil and create steam bubbles. Then you have the same feeling like a lot of Air, when it cools of it gets to liquid Water and you get an normal feeling and brake again....
The DOT 5 that Steve's running won't absorb moisture like DOT 3-4 will .....so something else is going on. The front rotors are really small with very little mass and are going to get hot quick. I wish there were cameras on the car going into the gravel....if the brakes were just overheated they'd be orange, or the pads just didn't bite. I tried to see the rotors when they were digging it out of the gravel and from the brief view they looked blackish so they might be ruined. Glad he's going to get larger chutes!!
@@recoilrob324 Dot 5 gets same problem. its hydroscopic because of the silicone base but all that serves to do is displace the water till its trapped i the lowest part of the system so you still have water in there only its not dissipated in the fluid.
@@recoilrob324- Drag cars like Steve’s use minimal front braking to stop the car vs the rear brakes. It’s due to the tires used on drag cars. You don’t want to lock up the narrow front tires. The majority of braking is via the rear brakes with the large sticky rear tires.

Bless your heart... this is the best remake of a race car that we've watched it a long time. Especially with this lovely identifying markers such as the brightest of 😄🧐👀👏🤟 Glad you are OKAY 😊
It’s your brake hoses. They’re collapsed on the inside, not allowing fluid to come back fast enough when master is trying to retract. Then 200+mph, heats them up and boils fluid. As soon as fluid starts getting yellow/brownish, it’s got water in it, it’ll boil. Glad there wasn’t much damage except for parking feelings. Thanks for the content.
@@Jeff7477 once one brake caliper boiled the fluid, there’s not enough master in the world. It’s the hoses cause it shows holding pressure, burning brakes up at 200+. There’s one component on a vehicles braking system that has serial numbers, it is the brake hose because it is that important. I’ll do you one better, standard car, you tell me why hoses are ribbed and I’ll believe you.
I'd assume he's running metal brake lines, I don't see those collapsing. Maybe he boiled the fluid or has an issue with the master or the pushrod. Is he running dot 3 or something with a higher boil point?

The only time I've ever had "brake issues" was after a tank slapper at 125 on my Z1b back in '80. Once I got the wobble under control, I realized I was going to miss my exit off the freeway and hit the front brakes. Nothing! Wish I had a picture of my face at that moment. My seat had a permanent crease from the pucker factor of a lifetime. 17-year-old me was a danger to myself and everybody else on the road. Good times! (kinda funny that Good Times Kawasaki was where the bike was purchased in Sacramento, CA)
We ran a 3 1/2 hour endurance race - brakes get very hot and once they are hot a few times it caused fade but a quick bleed & top off at the track or full fluid change once home solved the issue
This is not a fade problem because he didn't have brake pressure. Sounds like the master cylinder let the fluid go by the seals. I would replace it and flush the system.
So did Cleetus or someone from Motion Raceworks come charging to your rescue when the TBM Brakes failed? 😮 Ironically I was thinking the chutes looked small. 🤔
Dot 5 silicone is compressible when heated, returns to non compressible when cooled Check MC/Linelock for residual press during run there Mil studies, search Dot 5 papers
You might have a master cylinder adjustment issue if you're showing static pressure. Possibly causing caliper drag and boiling fluid. Causing brake fade which can lead to cursing and shitting your drawers.
Kinda crazy Cleetus had a no parachute issue a few years ago when he did a pass in Tom Bailey's car and now in your own car you get the parachute but no brakes. Just glad that nothing seriously bad came out of that situation. Sounds like some water might have gotten into the system and that boiled off causing air in the lines
I wonder about that 10-11 lb drag and if those brakes did get too hot and need more cooling air ducted to them. Do you bleed them every session/day? It's a miracle your turbos didn't eat a few pebbles. BIG chutes, for a BIG car is a great idea.
A stuck shoe or pad could have super heated the break at that speed. (not an expert but had something similar) Edit: This could have happend during the burnout, with the line lock on you would not have noticed.
@@jesimss I know he is a very smart guy, just trying to help. Sometimes when the plans change, a simple detail can be overlooked. Way to be condensing.
Steve, your brake pressure transducer might not be accurate down at 10 psi. This is what we call down in the weeds for a transducer that can measure 2000 psi. I believe for disk brakes there should be no residual pressure and in fact there should be -2 psi to pull the pads slightly away from the rotors.
I know a few people who don't swear but when they are racing and something goes wrong they all swear Well done steve for not swearing even though the paint was in serious danger
The brake fluid got overheated and aerated. It's possible the line lock held just enough pressure to the front brakes causing them to drag. I would think the pads front or rear would show excessive heat if that was the issue. The brake fluid itself if it's been in the car awhile will lose it's higher boiling point. It could also be if the rotors are or were warped, that too could cause an oscillation where the brake pistons are being beat on. Think of shaking a bottle of Coke, when it foams you can't drink it. Five minutes later it goes back to normal . That's why you had brakes when being towed on the return road. Bottom line, you're safe and the Wagon isn't damaged.
Pebbles is probabl 39:05 y better than sand you probably don't sink as deep be harder getting the super fine dust out of everything going into sand. Kind of sounds like you were boiling the oil in the calipers or your master has lost compression seals in it and just bypassing it right back into the reservoir. Maybe a caliper seal blew. Is it a dual shuttle piston, or single piston, or tandem dual piston.? Glad everything turned out OK and that your fine god speed Steve !

Is there any chance the G forces from the shutes and a lower brake fluid level could cause no brakes? Maybe the angle of the brake master cylinder? Or cooked brake fluid? Edit: lol oil on the brake caliper could be a good reason it's got no brakes
get rid of that stupid wildwood hot rod brake master cylinder and put some proper racecar set up on it you are going 200 mph not 65, 70 mph this is the second time you have had no brakes
I had a seemingly similar intermittent brake failure problem on a car with no abs. However, it was at a low rate of speed in a rural area. Got the car stopped using my parking/emergency brake. Checked the fluid level in the master, looked for leaks, and couldn't find anything wrong. Cautiously drove the car home, and the brakes worked perfectly. Ended up changing the master cylinder because I didn't know what else it could be. This happened years ago, I,m still driving that vehicle and I've never had it happen again. It's definitely a very eerie feeling when you're trying to stop a vehicle, and the brakes don't work. I'm glad Steve made it out of that situation without much damage.
Had a brake failure earlier last week myself. Pushed out a front caliper seal as I went into a 65 mph turn at 140 mph. Luckily I still had the backs and spun it parallel down the wall. Could have been real bad. (Road course)

It didn't build pressure though...both of the things you said wouldn't affect the pressure in the system when the pedal is pressed.
Look at Motions test video of these brakes...getting them red is no problem
@@recoilrob324 Dot 5 gets same problem. its hydroscopic because of the silicone base but all that serves to do is displace the water till its trapped i the lowest part of the system so you still have water in there only its not dissipated in the fluid.
@@recoilrob324- Drag cars like Steve’s use minimal front braking to stop the car vs the rear brakes. It’s due to the tires used on drag cars. You don’t want to lock up the narrow front tires. The majority of braking is via the rear brakes with the large sticky rear tires.
BTW, To the SMX haters look at this SMX rock. even after 2 runs no oil then cleaned up same rods pistons cam lifters and all but bearing it has did 1 3 day drag and drive and now this and is rocking it. SMX FTW
the motor cleetus hurt in mullet was already a beat up engine according to both steve and cleet. and they both ran that motor to hell and back. and all it was, was a main cap and some lifters... these motors are built like mother truckin tanks LOL
Absolutely a great engine and even better engine builder. These guys have been beating the hell out of those engines and haven’t even been bad enough to not be able to get them back to the trailer.
Didnt know there where haters.... Steve seems like a great dude with a Top Notch business. ...
@@zippityzbrakeIt was not a beat-up engine in any way... The block was repaired it was 100% within spec just like it would be if it were brand new ... I purposely buy blown up engines for my new engines to save money if you know what you're doing and have the machines no reason why it can't be as good as new especially with billet like his case... Top fuel teams can make 12,000 horsepower after making the same type of repairs 4500 is nothing in comparison
Cleetus can tear up an anvil. It’s amazing the SMX lasted as long as it did given the amount of abuse it experienced. I suspect there was even more abuse not posted on the web. Steve builds top notch units. By the way, I suspect moisture is in the brake system on the wagon.
The transmission tunnel is not finished until you put a big sticker of the Brain on it. Then it will be perfect.

BTW main selling point of the TBM breaks are that they release completely and do not drag if I am not wrong. Well it is racing, something always gets discovered and solved after it. I bet soon wagon will be breaking better than ever. I am pretty sure Motion Raceworks/TBM people are going to take care of Steve.
Pretty sure Steve doesn't want it "breaking" 😂
No, the selling point is they don't warp under extreme heat and can still stop heavy cars without chutes in an emergency lol
@mjay6245 well I am pretty sure I have heard this from the horses mouth. Or might be the giraffes mouth. 😀 Who know he knows. Considering that the animal in question is part owner and very clever man, I believe him. It's not the only selling point either. Your points are very valid as well. But that doesn't negate this point.

So many options for active driver cooling. From 300$ to 8000$. Even twin systems for driver and navigator/passenger.
Bless your heart... this is the best remake of a race car that we've watched it a long time. Especially with this lovely identifying markers such as the brightest of 😄🧐👀👏🤟
Glad you are OKAY 😊
It’s your brake hoses. They’re collapsed on the inside, not allowing fluid to come back fast enough when master is trying to retract. Then 200+mph, heats them up and boils fluid. As soon as fluid starts getting yellow/brownish, it’s got water in it, it’ll boil. Glad there wasn’t much damage except for parking feelings. Thanks for the content.
Nah its his master cylinder. 1 failed hose isn't going to take down all 4 corners and cause the brake pedal to go to the floor.
Id start with the soft line at the passenger side front brake, could have pin holes in it spraying fluid, and that one hose will make the pedal drop
Man this track hates yall.. First cleet with no chutes, then Tom into the traps and now you 🤣🤣 glad you're okay

@@jamesb9300 That's the problem though isn't it, the willingness to accept God's Word and by extension Him or do you continue to lean on your own understanding and the imaginations of men, (Genesis 8:21, Psalm 14:1, Psalm 92:6, Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 18:2, Proverbs 27:22), and many such verses in Scripture.
Allways good the check and have good working brake’s, it’s you life, and ours ,thanks BigAl California, get r fixed for next pass, kool
In road racing motorcycles - we ran a full synthetic brake fluid and learned to change & or bleed the brakes after every weekend due to fade issues
Hmm
We ran a 3 1/2 hour endurance race - brakes get very hot and once they are hot a few times it caused fade but a quick bleed & top off at the track or full fluid change once home solved the issue
@@stevemorrisracingas has already been said glad your ok . But hey flush that system out with new fluid
Dot 5 silicone is compressible when heated, returns to non compressible when cooled
Check MC/Linelock for residual press during run
there Mil studies, search Dot 5 papers
You might have a master cylinder adjustment issue if you're showing static pressure. Possibly causing caliper drag and boiling fluid. Causing brake fade which can lead to cursing and shitting your drawers.
Kinda crazy Cleetus had a no parachute issue a few years ago when he did a pass in Tom Bailey's car and now in your own car you get the parachute but no brakes. Just glad that nothing seriously bad came out of that situation. Sounds like some water might have gotten into the system and that boiled off causing air in the lines
He had a parachute problem with Mullet too, didn't he?
@@fartzinacan now that you bring it up I think he
Doesn't Cleetus make Steve's brakes?
@@TheJeracuda
He did. And as with Tom's car, it was down to the chutes having been packed for too long.
@@AB-80X I thought it got hung up on something or was that possibly during the Christmas tree race and not a normal race?
I wonder about that 10-11 lb drag and if those brakes did get too hot and need more cooling air ducted to them. Do you bleed them every session/day? It's a miracle your turbos didn't eat a few pebbles. BIG chutes, for a BIG car is a great idea.
A stuck shoe or pad could have super heated the break at that speed. (not an expert but had something similar) Edit: This could have happend during the burnout, with the line lock on you would not have noticed.
I said in the parachute video you can't stop Steve, I didn't mean it literally..LoL awesome save buddy, the crap happens and PG cussing made my day.
Bigger parachutes are going to put a lot more force on the mounts, just make sure the new set-up can take the greater force.
He most likely didn’t think of that…🙄
@@jesimss I know he is a very smart guy, just trying to help.
I know a few people who don't swear but when they are racing and something goes wrong they all swear
Well done steve for not swearing even though the paint was in serious danger
Is that carbon fiber Trans shield going to slow down the shrapnel enough to prevent injury?
It looks pretty suspect.
Hey Steve, So Who Went Further in the Sand Trap? You or Tom Bailey!! Glad You're O.K.

Man, what a pro.
They would have been changing my diapers and there would have been a solid “beep” from the time the brakes failed until today.
Hope that 144 prochargers for Garret! Also heard he's going for a hemi style engine.. so maybe not
I had a seemingly similar intermittent brake failure problem on a car with no abs.
+10,000 cool points to The Sugar Momma!!! 😂😂😂
Had a brake failure earlier last week myself. Pushed out a front caliper seal as I went into a 65 mph turn at 140 mph. Luckily I still had the backs and spun it parallel down the wall. Could have been real bad. (Road course)
