Steve was great having you out at the races !!! Hope to see you again soon.
You are the friggen man Clay! Keep up all the great work, and never stop having that great smile and positive attitude!
@@JonHop1thank you 👍
I tell people Clay is the best friend you haven't met yet! Your car was on display at the Detroit International Auto Show several years back as a display in the Denso booth. Nobody was around and I said to the guy I was with , I wonder if Clay is here too. Sure enough as we were looking over the car, you walked out of the back of the display and proceeded to talk to us like we were old buddies. We talked for several minutes and you gave us both autographed hero cards of your car. I've known you prior to you being in NHRA when you used to run IHRA top fuel with Werner trucking and I'd see you at US131 Dragway in Martin, MI.
See ya later boss!
Clay, thank you for giving us the opportunity to get an inside look at Top Fuel. That was really fascinating. Thank you for being such an incredible ambassador for racing. I wish you the very best.
Nice one, the nitro engine info blew my little brain clear into oblivion...
I enjoy seeing Steve geeking out it’s so different
All that tech info from Clay's pit really was beyond next level if you're pretty deep into cars and tuning. Thanks for sharing.
WOW
Steve at a top fuel pit with Clay Millican - I watched the show with Luts and this car on the dyno - now here we are looking at the insides of top fuel car ---
thank You Steve
Mel's diner and My cousin Vinny.
The day in the pits with Clay is awesome stuff.
Joe
Selling Jeff Lutz on running the SMX was hilarious 🤣
Alice was the TV show........ great vid, its amazing the engineering that goes into drag racing!!
My Cousin Vinny is def the movie reference!
Ok, now we know a Wagon hauler for homeless Wagons, SMX powered, will be a thing.Steves roadside recovery for the win.
Mel’s Diner. “kiss my grits” was a retort by waitress Flo.
In 72 I was stationed in Georgia. There was commercial for Quaker instant grits. A southerner was in a Yankees cafe and orders a bowl of hot water and smugly stirs in his packet of grit as the locals try to figure what the stranger is doing. Jimmy Carter was governor at the time.
TV reference was Mel's Diner? Don't know the movie reference....
Hey Steve, stick one of these in the wagon. You'll stop blowing up transmissions hahaha.
Imagine. Someone build a trans a cross of this and a regular trans.
Enter Bruno lenko. Bam. Lotta Work getting down the track but one thing cleetus hasn't blown up. Is Mc slurries trans.
Good job on the music I dig it. Science
That was very cool thanks Steve
stomp on the loud pedal great video
and to think that nitro-methane was originally a dry cleaning solvent
Is there a search an awesome video like I’ve said before you can run your videos as long as you want because it’s constant information. If you Google tops your car tags some very interesting stuff I’m pretty sure they burn 11 or 12 gallons of fuel per second opener parts I can’t remember who is almost equivalent to the station or off and the jeans are almost equivalent to the stational a hemi doesn’t have enough horsepower is in the blower another fact like that really cool
... depending on which way the wind is blowing, y'all may want to step back when they fire baby girl up....
First 1 stumped me but I googled it it's alice kiss my grits but I definitely knew the second 1 my cousin Vinny I'm 32 so the movie defines my age here along with the TV show 😂
It's hard to explain how much Clay and his team have done for Nitro, he's given sooooo many people a level of access you could only *dream* of from the big teams. He's what racing is really all about! Which speaks true to him having real racers around him... Steve, Kevin, Brent, Cleat, Kyle we appreciate you all!
Well said! I couldn't agree more! Thanks Steve, terrific video!
He is the best. I literally bumped into him and before I could even turn around, he was apologizing, and just looked genuinely hurt that he may have caused me pain or an inconvenience. And, it was 100% my fault. Anyway, he welcomed me back to his pit, got a close look at some things, and chatted for a few. Truly the epitome of what racing is.
Clay is a Rockstar of racing always positive never angry always a huge genuine smile.
I'm having a bad day I watch a video with clay.
It helps a. Little.
True!! it's awesome on how Clay add's people's logo on the side of the car, etc... such as Kyle from Boosted Boyz, PFI, or Cleetus, etc...
yeah its been great to see
Hats off to Clay, Parts Plus and Rick Ware Racing for unprecedented access to the inner workings of top fuel racing.
The amount of access we get on Clay's channel is phenomenal. The past half a year or so there has been less in the lounge which is a shame but I respect that they don't want to be sharing certain stuff with the other teams. In previous years though there was an amazing amount that Clay showed of the inner workings in the lounge with Jim (and Bruce when he was stateside) and with Mike (before Jim joined the team).
Thanks Rick! Clays got the best boss imo
I have to say I have been around many different form of racing all my life and what I saw in this video did more to explain the workings top fuel car than what I’ve learned in my 50 + years of being around racing! Clay has to be given many props for being so open with his pit!
AKA called the PUKE TANK. It should be able to hold all the oil the Engine system has. The size of that opening on the manifold is regulated by the NHRA. On average the Teflon strips are replaced every other run. Not every clutch disc is the same compound of material. Yes they will mix some old with new depending on what Jimbo wants. Crew Chief. Guy with red hair/Beard is Jesse he is the car chief. he oversee the engine rebuild after each run. The pos Gs are not the killer. It is the Neg Gs at the end when chute is pulled that is what can end a driver. It can detach a retna in a eye. Thank you Clay and Crew. The Peoples Team for sure. Thank you Steve and Val for sharing your small vacation with us
That is crazy concerning the eyes!
@@lynntatro7374yep, I was waiting for Steve to draw the negative Gs for the slow down at the end of the run, but no such luck.
@@CGT80 it's probably not recorded in the graph when everything is shut off is my guess.
Don Garlits had a retina detach, and it ended his career driving
How about the pulmonary artery. I hear that can tear under high 'G' environments.
You guys are great ambassadors of the sport. Thanks to everyone who participated in this video
Its like Nitro cars are the Holy Grail of Engine Mechanics. So nice of Clay to share the wealth!
The Jeff Lutz skit with you saying he needs a SMX was great 😂😂. Great content Steve!
😁
Yeah but angry hornet isn’t to shabby
Clay is the face of Top Fuel in NHRA and Rick Ware is the absolute best team owner with allowing Clay to race Cleetus--that was something few will ever forget. No man his done more for Top Fuel and the NHRA than Clay and he's a super nice guy too. Thanks to Kev for getting you nose to nose with the RWR, Parts Plus Top Fuel Team and sharing so much with so many people that would otherwise never be afforded this level of access. Cheers, Steve!
Hell yeah. Got Clay with Steve today. Not long ago he hung out with cleetus. The dude is awesome
When Clay and Steve get together get ready to do some learning. I can never skip forward to any of Steves video without going back to where I started to skip because I did not want to miss anything.
And what a powerhouse of horsepower people here. Lutz and Morris, Kevin and Clay. Doesn't get any better than this.
It’s really awesome for Clay to allow you to film and reach in his pit!! Thanks Clay ! Hit that loud pedal!! Thanks Steve for those billet works of art!!
You bet!
Steve's voice over is like a director's commentary, It's great !
This is the combo youtube needs, steve, clay, jeff and kevin
I learned about Clay through Kevin’s channel Clay is such a great guy always full of energy and always a smile. Thanks for sharing
Clay Millican is awesome! He's one of the few top fuel racers that I have seen that will actually talk to people and explain things. Thank you Clay!
Glad you've got the parts needed to repair the Boostmaster without sacrificing one of the other beautiful, complete wagons. As for the quotes, "Kiss my grits" is from Alice, and "No self- respectin' southerner..." is from My Cousin Vinny. Can't wait to see the Boostmaster back out on the track! Thanks for giving us the behind-the-scenes of Clay's outfit. Very informative.
I've learned more in these few minutes of your video than I have in many years of watching nitro cars! It IS awesome of Clay to give you access to do this!
TONS of knowledge is shared and explained on his channel, in case you haven't checked it out for a few hours/days. 👍🏼🏁
Oh, I'm aware of it! But a good comment for some others that might not be so aware.
Clay is the coolest guy in top fuel he is the only one i know that lets people come into his pit area and stand talk record and explain everything about the car and what they are doing and he always has a big smile on his face
Love the build you are doing with KSR! Can't wait to see what you guys do with it! The Top Fuel is a whole different animal! Amazing! Mels diner.
Never been to this channel, I’ve been a Drag racing fan for a very long time and a Clay fan for a long time. This is one of the most informative videos I’ve seen for casual observers of fuel racing I’ve ever seen! Heck after going to and watching fuel drag racing for near 50 years, I learned a couple things. Very well done! And, if you watched this and you aren’t a Clay Millican fan, please consider attending an NHRA National and experiencing Nitro racing in person. TV and Video doesn’t do it justice and the southern gentleman you see here is the same guy you’ll meet in the pits! Great job all!
Clay, Steve and Kevin are all salt of the earth people. Great trio. Should be a podcast.
Clay is legit the man, he's the Mr Rodgers of drag racing. Talk about the best kind of human. He truly has nothing to hide. If you don't love this guy from how he lives and how he leads then you've got no idea of true compassion for people and the sport. Thank you so much Steve. I love your videos. Three of the best engine scientist in one video. It's incredible
This is the only car Steve could never break a transmission in….because it doesn’t have one. 😅
That sounds like a challenge
Alice and My Cousin Vinny..
Clay and his team's dedication to social media access is stunning. I used to watch Diamond P on the weekend, and I've learned SO much from Clay. Love it!
Telling your age there a little bit 😅
Well, I guess so! Hahaha
I know Luis got some Oldsmobile wagon tail lights from him about a year ago I don't know how he finds all them wagons but he does
Steve's kid needs to get in on all that. What a chance all of this exposure could be!
Lutz is a driver and a craftsman. Impressive.
Lutz is a hack
Lutz The Putz!
Clay has a TH-cam channel that’s badass. He reply’s and reads all comments as well.
@@rightsidelanechoice7702 maybe we can get his thoughts on silicone welds then
@@willreed1411for being such a hack he sure does have a lot of very respectable people always coming to him for advice and for them to work on their stuff🤔
Kiss my Grits was Flo from the tv show Alice and the other grits reference was from My Cousin Vinny. Clay is a great guy,I met him years ago in Hershey when I worked for GM. Thanks for the video Steve.
Oh I had the MCV but not flo, which means your older than me, and I’m dirt
Clay is truly a gentleman always willing to share his knowledge with a big old smile on his face. He’s only as good as his crew though they are a well oiled machine. Thanks for sharing a day with Clay video I definitely learned a bunch of stuff on this video!
Just know, just like your introduction says you might learn something. I absolutely learn from all your videos! I look forward to seeing your posts so much! I will say this is one of your best! Also I’m a big Clay Millican fan and watch his show regularly! Maybe when I hit the lottery I could get you to build me an 800 hp pump gas n/a motor! What a dream!
You told us what was coming in this video and I was still blown away!!! I dont have the words…thank you, Kevin, and Clay!!! Kool hearing all 3 of you chatting it up.
outstanding video , I need to take notes and watch this about two more times .
I shed a tear seeing all those poor babies in the backyard out there in the cold all tore apart. Steve’s no kill shelter needs our help!!
The voice over with you and Jeff talking about converting his cars to SMX’s was hilarious 😂
😁😁
Yea, I never realized Jeff Lutz and Steve Morris sounded so much alike.
@@davidvaughn7778 😂
Clay, Steve, Kevin and Jeff all on the same video. That’s what I call value.
Has to be one of the most comprehensive top fuel videos on TH-cam. So much in-depth information was great to watch!
Top fuel stuff is just nuts 🔥🔥
Flo from the tv show Alice said kiss my grits and the other is My Cousin Vinny
I could listen to Clay talk about nitro cars all day..... 🙏🙏🍻
The tech talk with Clay was so awesome learned so much. WOW.
I just watched a pine hollow diagnostic video those vans are notorious for water intrusion on the ecm 1:06:05
Great video. Clay is the real deal.
Do they still run duel plugs like a hemi or are they not based off the hemi anymore
Good job to promote the industry!!
Well, we know you can also go 326 miles an hour with a parachute out now too lol
That’s utterly insane lol
as a born in the south native yes we eat instant grits the real ones take to long to make FFS even the instant ones take for ever to make
Shirl Greer lived 5 blocks from my house growing up. Watched him race for years.
Thanks so much Steve and Clay. I'm nobody but have loved drag racing and watched it on TV all my life. I learned more from watching this video about top fuelers than the rest put together. Thanks again 👍👍👍
Awesome video! Thanks Clay for letting Steve and Kevin show us how your team works!
Road conditions are a product of state legislature, I cite Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and Texas as examples. Cannabis should never have been prohibited in the first place, but alcohol is just fine right? Happy to poke the bear whenever he/she/it makes uninformed proclamations.
Cheers,ed
Clay Millican is a great guy and was younger the last time I saw him race in person. Clay gave you the secret how to avoid tire shake. Keep the tires round by spinning them a little off the line. He called it getting up on the tire. A correction for you at the 1 hour mark, the engine hits their max RPM about 8400 at the hit of the throttle. The clutch works against their max RPM at the 1 foot mark and all the way down the track. They Grunt the engine as much as they can, Bringing in more and more clutch, hopefully without smoking the tires. The clutch is fully locked up before the 1000 foot mark. Weed is not legal in Wisconsin, but our Governor is almost as useless as yours. 🤔
I have a very hard time figuring out how this level of racing is profitable at all. Between the cars, the parts, the team members, the hauler's, and everything back at the shop. It has to be close to $100K a weekend between everything. Millions every season, and some how they all make a living doing it. Blow's my mind just trying to figure it out
Hell, you drove right by my house at the Virginia-West Virginia border. Could've taken you and the wife to lunch. Clay is an awesome guy and loves to give back.
In any other situation, if you had to rebuild an engine every quarter mile, you would most likely junk it!
That's only 3,284 rebuilds between my house and Seattle, a trip I've made 50 times. That's a traveling time of 3hrs-23minutes for the 821 miles. But at 3 hrs per rebuild this adds 410-1/2 days to the trip. The Camry going 70 mph still wins by 396 days !
Thanks! Love to hear it from an engine guy’s perspective.
Great video. But clay also has a in-depth description with every crew member and their exact job on his channel pretty amazing got to watch. And by the way kiss my grits is from Mel's diner
Thanks Steve, I really enjoyed that video. I learned things as well.
Kiss my grits I think is from Mel’s diner I believe. And I couldn’t agree more about Gretchen Whitmer.
nothing like smell of nitro in the morning! the computer control fuel system! would not work with out the computer laptop or programs run! You can't be to safe these days. I would take the name off the van and black the windows out if your going to be staying at hotels with high dollar stuff. Dishonest people out there that can make your day not so good.
1h20 video from steve ?!?!? Sign me up😁
Witmer...whatever happened to fix the damn roads???? Welcome back Steve!
I have a new Top Fuel hero! Letting us in to see all this is fantastic. A special class of person.
Thanks everyone who's responsible for making this video possible!! VERY much appreciated!
Most "edumacational" hour I've seen for NHRA nitro cars !! Fantastic !!
The psa bit for the wagon priceless! Well done Clay and crew. That was just wonderful.
Does anyone in the Pro Stock or Pro Mod class wanna tell us about the car and setup? Let us peak inside those manifolds.
30:50 see Steve that's why you're torque converter in the wagon was on the hot side huge power like 4k wheel horsepower it blows my mind on how it lives
Thanks Steve for sharing all this with us,very interesting stuff.🔥👍🇺🇸
Good stuff... like sitting in a bomb that explodes forward... sheesh... 😂😂😂
Lol movie reference... Mel's restaurant and ol Flo the waitress
25:50 Oo man I could listen to Clay, Kevin and Steve talk tech all day long!!
You should tell them about the neg. G,s when the chutes hit .. Big Daddy retired because of detached retinas
"Top fuel frugal" might be my new favorite term. :)
"Mel's Diner", with Flow. And the movie "my cousin Vinny".
Steve, when are you gonna go top fuel? Nicly presented. In the 80,s when i did machining for some of Jack Ostranders parts, it was nice that dimensionality the engines were still basic hemis. I enjoyed repairing pieces and parts to make 1 more pass. Really cool. ... Flo at Mels diner and Cousin Vinnie
Does going in reverse on these drag cars have any wear it causes on the clutches you need to account for? Always curious about that and the how they battle the heat of the clutches.
21:18 Het Steve the bloke holding that can is using his man clamp 🗜️it’s your third set of hands 🙌 😂
It surprises me how much of this is bolted together and holds up to all of this insane abuse
Being a top fuel crew member years ago. I can explain how TOP FUEL clutch works is, NASA meets John Deer.
Use Val’s name more. My Wife is not good enough for that nice lady!
Excited for this! i was hoping you wer gonna cover top fuel engines soon, let alone Clays ! Awsome! thanks steve
Clay Millican is an all around guy and a one-of-a-kind talent! It was great to see all these guys talking shop.
Forget everything you know about fuel motors...
