Plus Cataphracts could shoot back themselves while being mounted. Cataphracts used a lot more complex tactics than Western Knights since they basically were a professional military unit and not just a bunch of rich nobles. They would often launch probing attacks at the enemy, coming close while shooting off volleys with their strong recurve bows, they would often times come very close and shoot right into the enemy soldiers' face, heavily disrupting the ranks, their armor was so heavy that any return fire from the enemy simply bounced off or got stuck in the scales with no penetration which allowed them to ride with impunity, oftentimes there are descriptions of cataphracts riding back from the front covered in arrows from head to toe embedded into their armor. These false charges would additionally cause the enemy forces to waver due to the sheer psychological effect of hundreds of super heavy cavalry charging right at them while shooting at their face with controlled, powerful volleys. When they would make a decisive charge, they would assume a V shaped formation so that the behind ranks could keep letting off volleys even when the front ranks were already engaged, this would disrupt the enemy front lines since coming closer to form a shield wall would make them vulnerable to cataphract arrow fire and assuming a loose formation would make them vulnerable to the actual charge. When they got close they would hold out their lances with both hands and smash right into the enemy, spearing multiple soldiers onto a lance and would keep pushing, simply crushing any enemy who would escape their lance. Once deep into the ranks and after losing the initial momentum, they would pull out their mace to bash the enemies's heads in or their spatha sword or their paramerion curved sword which brings me to the point that they carried all of these weapons at the same time- two bows, arrows in a hip quiver, two swords- a curved paramerion on the waist and a straight spatha on the horse, a mace and finally the long contus lance, plus they would also carry a dagger. Wow
Relations go manichean knights / knights Templar?
the music is so scary
Well, if were were in an open field and we saw an entire unit of those guys charging at us, I think "scared" would be an understatement to how we would be feeling.
Cool.
Why "byzantine"?????? They were EASTERN ROMANS!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop with that anacronic germanism
+Ricardo HSalazar as remnant of that empire, i assure you that they never called themselves byzantine... ask Pope and the the western "historians" for the term...
Anax Aetolos I´m from the western, and for me and many people...is the EASTERN ROMAN EMPIRE, NOT THE BYZANTINE
+Ricardo HSalazar i said western "historians" mostly germans cause they had at that time the "Holy Roman Empire" in the west and that Empire had nothing to do with the Roman Empire of the old...
Anax Aetolos Please searche this in Google: ejercito-romano.forogratis.es/

))))) Чушь не говорите, катафрактарии это чисто скифский или сарматский вариант у Византии их быть не могло!
))) ну ты и овощь.
стыдно за тебя.
Avstrias Mittermeir на себя посмотри))))
Avstrias Mittermeir
