      I was really excited to see and hear the HEDD headphones. Quite an accomplishment to use an AMT driver for headphones. They were amazingly open sounding (from what I could hear in the noisy NAMM environment) but this product will go a long way! I would highly recommend having a listen! Please choose a better listening environment than I did ;-)

    Warren absolutely got the best walkthrough of LUNA of anything I saw all last week. Tom really toned down the normal UAD sales pitch and I finally saw so many features that no one else was showing.
    As always, thanks Warren, and I look forward to seeing you put LUNA into action later this year. I’m curious if you’ll warm up to the idea that an Apollo Arrow and LUNA are a good value for new producers or musicians just starting out with audio recording.

    Luna seems perfect for me and the timing is perfect as well. I primarily record live drums and full bands. And I just purchased an Apollo x8p. Luna seems to address all the issues I was having recording and editing in Logic Pro (which I've been using for years). Spring can't come soon enough.

      The concept for Luna is latency free live recording eg vocals with printed efx in the signal chain or live drums that you carryover into your DAW. It's not for music production as far as I can tell.

    As someone who just records myself, I am very pumped at the potential workflow improvements with being able to track through UAD plugins without printing and immediately playback through same plugin instances like you could with native plugins but with less latency and potential for dropouts etc. Plus UAD plugins sound great. Expensive though! Glad Luna is free for apollo owners.

    Great explanation and demo of the Luna system. The more detail I hear/see, the better it looks. Like that bit at 42:11 that allows you to create new tracks while recording other tracks ... really helpful for moving fast if while you are tracking a band, someone tells you hey, can I come in on the chorus with a shaker? Yes you can! ha ha. :-)

    First of all, Warren, thank you very much for asking the guy from UAD right questions - it’s been only now I can understand what Luna is and what it does! 👍👍 I’m about to buy myself more I/Os, I only have an Apollo twin, I own several pieces of analog gear I need to hook them up to my computer and for last two months I’ve been trying to convince myself I don’t need one Apollo x 8 , or 16. And I almost managed to do that after having read a bulk load of specs from all leading music gear makers, AND now I’m back where I was 2 months ago 😁😁. More seriously, when you consider carefully what you need for a budget but still a professional sounding studio - gear wise and gear integration wise, Apollos don’t look that expensive with what they offer for the price -- plus now they’ve got a DAW of their own

    • @terrydoylemusic
      @terrydoylemusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have two BF Apollo 8 and an Audient ASP880 in to the adat of one of them. Fantastic for recording a full band with API on teh drums, Helios on the guitars, etc ... all on the way in. When it comes to mix time ... I spend my time balancing and automating, not trying to create some vibe cos its already there. I am looking forward to trying out the Luna system as it looks like a new beginning but with a load of experience put on from day 1. As a Version 1 of their software, I am pretty impressed.

    • @saysaylor7662
      @saysaylor7662 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m thinking of Apollo x8 plus ISA 428 mk2 with its 8 channels adat card, which allows to integrate another 4 pres, and 4 chains of processors through its inserts. But Focusrite Clarett 8pre X thunderbolt also offers good sound and connectivity (separate line / microphone ins plus insert sends/returns on every channel and adat for ISA) Its cheaper than Apollo over 1000 EUR with its brilliant connectivity but lower specs (still better than my Apollo twin 🙂🙂) - I was almost decided to buy this one.. However, now when UAD introduced Luna I’ll wait to see it, I’m particularly interested how the integration with outboard hardware processors is solved. I’m not in a hurry I’m working on acoustics in my studio now, taking down some walls, etc.. pretty serious business 😁😁. ( Lots of DSP in Apollo x is also a strong selling point, still I’m sure more will be needed. I noticed they promo Apollos with either extra dsp satelites (I have one) or extra free plugins it’s a good idea to wait for it, I think )

    • @alexbreyer6921
      @alexbreyer6921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's almost like an advance capture recording app. Presonus when they first had StudioLive had capture software with routing and different channel strips. Metric Halo have a capture app that's different from their mix setup. Even with MOTU you're getting a DAW that's setup for tracking with their gear. You don't have to use it, but it's ready for you.

    Love that with one click you can copy your fader mix to a separate cue mix , this kind of thinking on their part gives me a lot of confidence in this software and their understanding and of how music is recorded. Has some excellent features, like "ARM" and how it purports to balance between hardware DSP and Native resources to let you overdub even with a large track and plug in count, very smart and practical. A potential game changer.

    And very interesting news too. I helped a friend of mine setup his home studio with Apollos, and him not being an engineer (great keyboard player though, his son is a very good drummer too), he's kinda confused by the Console vs DAW thing and how to setup monitoring for recording, so this would make his life MUCH easier. Plus the layout seems to be quite straightforward, especially for the non-technical types.
    I'll definitely point him towards the Luna, when is it expected to ship ?

    If you already work with a UAD Thunderbolt interface and have a load of UAD plugins, I'm one of those, then LUNA has to be the most exciting and game-changing product to come out this year. I am actually looking to move from my current DAW and have been demoing PreSonus Studio One 4. Or, trying to... I'm not 100% taken with it - from a user experience POV, I'm not enjoying working with it. (maybe I need to give it more time). But just watching the LUNA walkthrough here, I feel I already know it and would quickly get it. I love the concept behind the layout and workflow. The features demoed on this version 1 release give it the quality and features of a mature application... and it looks gorgeous. Can't wait to get my paws on this. Hope you're recovering well, Warren. Thanks for these insightful reviews.

    I guess the UA guys are aiming to producers that already own an Apollo, Mac and ProTools, to try to steer them into their own (and free) DAW. Funny how all the "great NEW features" are just everyday stuff for Studio One and other daw's users. The interface also looks like a proTools+StudioOne crossover. Anyway, can't hurt to have a new player in the game.
    Great video as usual !

      Hi Okay1 from the description I got it was third party companies like Neve etc that you would have to purchase their stuff. Which I don’t find surprising. It seems as though the basic functionality is free. My gut is they are trying to make it free to encourage its use and only additional features they have to license from third party companies are extra

    As a musician that is new to recoridng. (I have always went to studios to record anything of quality. ) I purchased an apollo twin on offer up or something and instantly felt relieved with how easy it was to set up and track with quality results. Unlike most of the users on here that are comparing it to something they have used for years and are heavily invested in I am not in that situation. I bought the interface because it is a very high quality interface that i bougut for 350 dollars and it came with plug ins and i can daisy chain with a apollo quad or apollo8x. Now they release luna and it is free to current users with thunderbolt. Maybe the finacial side is dedicated to selling more plugins that optimize the software but they havent let that get in the way of creating amazing tools for producers, engineers and musicians. So far everything i have used from universal audio has been amazing on its own legs. I would buy an apollo interface if luna didnt exist. I would buy a 1176 if the plugins didnt exist. These tools they are giving us are making life easier for people that have invested in their products is just amazing. I can honestly say universal audio is one of the few companies that gets me excited about their releases cause I am always getting more than what I expected.

    For those that haven't worked in the UAD environment, they already have a software interface called Console that is incredibly useful for tracking live and Luna seems to be a natural extension of it. Console works like, you guessed it, a mixing console but with presets so you could save a snapshot of say a live drum recording session where you have your mics running through an Apollo pre with a plugin emulating a hardware console pre then stack your plugins to get the chain you want and send that to your DAW to record it. Luna cuts out the need for the DAW to record it. Cubase, SD1, Reaper, insert other DAW here, does not integrate with your pre's/ DSP/plugins like Luna will. The other real life use I love is I can send a monitor mix back to an artist live with a full mix already done but with zero latency. That is a game changer.

    I'm excited to get this for FREE!!!! I'm a Digital performer alumni from version 1,5, and a PT 11 user that will not buy into their pay for play scam !!! I think I'm looking at my next daw!!! I nailed it, I said months ago that UA needed to make their own DAW and I was right, Go Me!!!! But seriously, this looks great from my aspect, I have 2, UAD2 front ends and 2 octos, that makes an astounding, 8 UAD inputs with UAD pre's 24 recording inputs and 24 cores, with 40 plus plugs I'm pretty set with any mix any size I want, and yes it took me a while to get here, I was putting all my chips into UAD2. Now that they ursuped PT, I'm all in again!!! Good job UAD. Now its time to hit the books and learn another DAW!!!!! Good bye PT, I loved your plugs but,... Not that much!!!!!! I put my money where my mouth is and I won this time!!!!!! about time.

      Yes, they started this process (I'm sure it's taken 5 years or so to do this!) before PC got onto Thunderbolt because out was significantly faster. It's a highly competitive arena between Mac vs PC unfortunately and one of the results is we don't initially always get the best things until they are forced to cooperate!

    Questions I didn't get answered:
    - Does LUNA record the midi when playing with soft synths? Or is it recording the audio only?
    - When you have a big project with both UAD and 3rd party plugs, and you want to punch a new track, are you going to be subject to latency because your project has bunch of 3rd party stuff?
    - Does every plugin that I would normally use with Logic (for example), work in the 3rd party slot of LUNA?
    - I still need to think through how I would create a workflow that uses all my thing likes Superior Drummer and all it's capabilities.

    I don't know about anyone else, but having used pretty much every major DAW, I don't see anything really "new" to LUNA. Studio One, Pro Tools, Logic, etc all have the time and pitch warping, relative grid, easy fading and clip gain, and better comping options if I'm honest, and I haven't heard of any interface that doesn't offer zero latency (I never use DAW monitoring anyways).....plus it's limited to Apollo interfaces. Am I missing something here?

      What about Cakewalk? Its free, but its advantage is that it wasnt made to be free to begin with like Reaper, it was made as a high end DAW to be sold and compete with the rest back when that was a thing. When Gibson who owned it at the time went bankrupt they sold it off and the people who bought it made it free. It even includes some brand name amp models like Randall. Its just software, and information is free so theres no magic going on with these daws that anybody else cant do, all the magic you pay for is in the plugins so its no wonder they're giving it away for free. That being said the stock effects and amp models even they give with Cakewalk is pretty nice anyway, I was about to buy FL studio until I found it honestly but would still get FL studio because I liked their delay but you cant beat free.

    Day 1 at the marketing and sales psychology seminar: “Here's a thing I think you'd like…”
    Will be fun to try Luna and see how it deals with 50+ tracks with both UA plugs and VSTs running and see how that zero latency actually performs.
    Hopefully they will manage to solve this, and if so, I would be happy see Console updated to be able to run VSTs as well.
    When it comes to features I can't see anything new but new ways of doing things already done in other DAWs.
    Logic, and I'm sure many other DAWs, have all these features already. Just a different workflow.

It would clear up all the noise if they had some flash cards about what is not there in V1. I work in software development and I think there is a long road ahead here, but its OK. They will work in what ever they need over the next couple of years to grow their user base. Just remember .. its free with your existing Apollo and is only adding usability. Maybe you don't go near it for a couple of years except in the case you want to use the new time-stretch algorithms, maybe you only use it in live off the floor sessions, etc .. The great thing is whatever people are doing today, they can still do only now they have some more options.

    • @cornerliston
      @cornerliston 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terrydoylemusic Completely missed that apart from one of them (don't remember in which video) where they said there will be support for VST.
      Agree with you, the more information the better and more relevant feedback and expectation they'll get.
      I find it very difficult to see that they will meet their promise of “no latency” as they talked about in the launch presentation.
      As I understand watching this video, and being an Apollo user, the only way to get very low latency is by arming the recording to take advantage of the interface's DSP. This will obviously mean plenty of restrictions how many plugins can be run and most likely no VST (or AU if that's what they choose to run?) in the signal chain on the armed track. Meaning all other tracks' inserts and sends will be temporarily disabled (?).
      Still to be found out.

    Not moaning here, but I can't help feeling that some of these developers/manufacturers are still a little 'Apple-centric'. But then again, I don't honestly think I'd be missing out on anything here, as I feel I have most of it in Cubaset Pro, which runs great on both my PC desktop & laptop at a fraction of the hardware price. There's a law of diminishing return here; how much do you gain against how much does this glitzy new hardware & software cost. If my Intel chip & Gigabyte board can work comfortably at 48,000k on an large multitrack project the only thing missing is in the department marked, 'my skills'. Hey, I know, it's a manufacturer's show, and they got the kit, baby. Watched Mixbus TV yesterday showcasing a modular inflatable isolation cabinet/vocal booth. I thought it sounded like a great idea, until I choked at the $200 per panel price tag. Get well soon
