    I’ve used Hypoaspis miles, predatory mites, to control many different mite species in my millipede and beetle enclosures. Some ants (if tiny, such as driver or nut ants) may see them as good but for larger species these mites may help control the spread. It might be worth looking into as they definitely aided in my battle against mite control. I also used them in my snake and frog enclosures with great success.

    This video is so well done and gets you completely invested in the journey. I appreciate how sad and unfortunate this situation was for poor Alex but it’s also important to remember that such situations are also a normal part of how dynamic ecosystems work and anyone who has raised and cared for small creatures for long enough is likely to encounter some kind of catastrophic incident at some time.

  • @Ninuturu

    Queen looked so much better at the end, if there are any other C diversa keepers close to you they could send you some brood- in the Netherlands we often do this for Carebara's that have their workers die from shipping stress. But you'd need extremely fast shipping to make sure it all goes right, and likely a heatpack since its getting colder

    • @tobiasrietveld3819
      @tobiasrietveld3819 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unlike many other ant species, it's EXTREMELY hard and labour intensive to save an orphaned Carebara queen, unless you have a closely related colony allowing for wholesale worker donations. These colonies need so much worker momentum to keep going which is almost impossible to gain by boosting with solely pupae. I've tried it many times and I have about a decade of experience keeping this species and even with abundant access to brood I still succeeded less than 15% in this situation. Also the queen in the clip wasn't free of mites.

    This is fascinating, but also, I wonder if it is better to always keep the predator mites along with an ant colony so that the mite problems can be prevented in early stage?

    • @Mastamote
      @Mastamote ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think the problem would be that if there is no other mites to eat ( from the start or anymore ) the predatory mites would starve. I don't know if they can eat something else. They could still most likely clean any dormant egg that are present in the beginning before dying.
      other part of the problem is that I think predatory mites are expensive. (dont know to what extent but i've heard so)

    Great video man! I could see it was predatory mites in the tube at the beginning, grain mites must’ve came along further down the line. If you have them in your setup here, you will in the rest if you’re leaving all those dead roaches in each set-up buddy, just a heads up, that’s a breeding ground for them.

  • @tobiasrietveld3819
    @tobiasrietveld3819 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When a Carebara colony is that much infested with mites, it's almost beyond saving. Something you should have done better was not dumping the predatory mite substrate in the outworld leaving the mites in a too dry environment there while also too exposed in the nest (the minors indeed hunt them) and no place to procreate. Instead it should have been mixed with about 1.5 liter of cocos substrate and then put inside a typical transparant box for storing dry spaghetti, with a layer of plaster on the bottom. Then the colony should have been moved in there, allowing them much more control over their nest climate, while also giving the predatory mites a much better environment to thrive. It also has a substrate 'churn' preventing the ants to ruin their setup by excavating all the substrate.
    One of my earlier Carebara colonies when I still kept them in substrate nests kept a continuous population of predatory mites in their nest, keeping them protected for almost two years. Afterwards I moved more to substrate-free nests that typically are a bit more dry, which makes it much harder for the parasitic mites to procreate (their brood usually needs a more humid environment). Problem with substrate-free setups is that they need to be size-matched perfectly to the colony or they'll get into trouble.
    Also the 'white' mites are detritivorous mites (not necessarily eating grain). These are only an issue for small colonies that are locked inside confined setups like testtubes as the mites will start pestering the brood (especially when you suddenly take away the garbage they were eating).

    • @AntHolleufer
      @AntHolleufer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow thank you for the feedback. I sadly have the same mites on a different colony although not that bad yet. I will definitely think of redoing the mite treatment more like you’ve described 🤔 thank you for the long comment! Always appreciate it! ❤️😄

    I've no idea,whether this would work for ants, but beekeepers often control mites with essential oils, particularly thymol. The difficulty is that the two have very similar metabolisms; what harms one, harms the other. So the dose is critical as you have to kill one without killing the other. Ant coli is vary in size so much that this would be difficult!

    My mate just had all his Harpegnathos venator die of mites, after he got them off Ant Antics about 2 months ago. Tried all the same stuff. Confirms the theory that the tube was likely infested, as my mate only fed pre-frozen prey after experiencing mites a couple years ago. The venator colony I ordered off of them on Oct 6 took a month to ship, then somehow got the wrong address put on it, and failed to deliver. Confirmed 100% my account has the correct address on it... so... They're now telling me I'll only get a refund if when the colony arrives on return, it's still healthy. Took a month to send, someone else boned my address, somehow I'm the c*nt out $100. Very professional website and packaging, but I can only recommend staying away due to these experiences.

    Hi. I'm struggling too with mites with my harpegnathos venator colony. The mites are staying mostly on their eyes, teeth and sometimes on their legs. But the mites do not look like the red ones. They are white.. And I saw these white mites in other colonies too. Like Camponotus Vagus. Eating on the Vagus ants mealworms but not staying on the ants. But they look like grain mites. Back to venator, I managed to take of the mites from the ants cleaning them with cotton, I increased the humidity in the colony like chat gpt told me😅, and now the remaining mites stay on the roof. I killed all the mites that I saw on the roof but i still think there are mites in my colony and in others. I ordered a very small colony of messor barbarus, and I'm very afraid that the mites will somehow attack the messor too. Any little advice will help.. :) ( and I wonder if you know or not that the mites will unfortunately attack the barbarus colony). So back to the start, the mites appeared in the cricket box, completely covering the crickets and I think eating them. Unfortunately, that happened when I wasn't home for some days and I couldn't have noticed. And another big unfortunately was that the cricket box was right under the ant table.... And there were a LOT of mites completely covering the whole box.. That's the whole story. Any help if you can give I will appreciate very very much :)

    Nice documentary, good heads up for us C Diversa keepers, also sent you a email, got a big c diversa colony meself, and could spare a big brood boost if you wanted, my colony is mite free, maybe we could save your queen this way ;

    :( well at least we all learned from this, I guess the only way to combat that is to keep a close eye on the colony when you introduce them into the world? If you see mites in the future what could you do differently from the start to kill the mites?

    • @AntHolleufer
      @AntHolleufer  ปีที่แล้ว

      So these mites attacked another colony and I treated them and kept the setup well ventilated, clean from feeder insects and they managed to fight back and survive 😄

    As a ant keepper this the most streesful mites dont let flys on your ants as they can lay mites if you see mites on your ants dont waste time go to a locked down for your ants if that spread all your ants will die of I'm wrong pls dont hate me I'm just trying to keep your ants safe :)

    Was that really all you could have done? Surely some kind of dusting could have helped.

    unfortunately, you started treatment too late, because predatory mites need time to come out high.
    adopt workers and after a problem, if you need some, I can catch you something or give you a lead on a person who may have larger quantities.
