It could be that the Chinese do not want to bring shame to their family so they will strive to be good citizens, working hard and contributing to society and not commit crimes.
Homelessness is due to INJUSTICE. Government has to establish economic justice, providing social care to make prosperity for all. There should not be anyone excessively rich and let down many people impoverished. Capitalistic undercontrol and social welfare program to help the poor, the weak, and the unfortunate is HUMANISM.
In China, family support does play an important role. I think home ownership (China about 90% vs. USA about 66%) also plays a role. I agree the Chinese government takes its people's requirements very seriously [just see its infrastructure], which is also an important element in solving homeless problem. I support that we ordinary people should help.
According to the the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there were 653,000 homeless Americans as of January 1, 2023. To put this in perspective, that's the population of the city of Boston. Imagine the entire population of Boston without a home. That's how bad the problem is in America. It is a great stain on US society and US governance.
I'm Chinese. About 30 years ago, it was still common to see quite a few homeless people in the county town, but in recent years, they have disappeared. However, there are still "Sanhe Gods," which refers to some young people who live at an extremely low standard of living. They rent extremely cheap and shabby houses in urban villages, have no fixed jobs, work for one day, then spend three days playing games in internet cafes, and absolutely refuse to get married. There are quite a lot of such people.
Sometimes, I do envy the "Sanhe Gods" a bit. They don't get married, don't buy houses, have food to eat, a place to sleep, play games, and have no worries. I know a "Sanhe God" from playing online games together. He got a rare weapon and sold it for 20,000 yuan (about $3,000). In less than 12 hours, he had spent it all-he booked a hotel room, hired two sex workers for a threesome, and spent everything in one night. The next day, he continued being a "Sanhe God." Unexpectedly, there are documentaries about the "Sanhe Gods" on TH-cam. If you're interested, you can check them out. This is what the Chinese call the "Sanhe Gods." th-cam.com/video/6ChvPYNRKAk/w-d-xo.html

Keeping the speculators at bay seems to be the key in making housing affordable. I just looked at rents online in Qingdao-an 1100 sq. ft. 2 bedroom furnished nice looking apartment was going for the equivalent of $643/mo. On my way to the post office today in Redlands California I saw rat-trap mobile homes for rent in a trailer park for over $2000/mo. Single family homes are being bought up by the thousands by large corporations and then rented out at ridiculously high prices. Unfortunately the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that corporations have 'personhood', so passing laws to prevent private equity corporations from buying and renting out single family homes will be judged unconstitutional. The US has become a casino, where everyone wants to 'cash out' when selling their house. Death taxes have made handing down properties to heirs more difficult. It's easier for the parents to sell their house to some faceless corporation for 20% above asking price than to gift it to their children. Another problem is excessive gov't regulations on building new homes. Every year it's a more complicated and restrictive building code. More mandated things like solar panels on the roof. More endless 'Environmental Impact Reports' needed from more and more useless bureaucracies. All of this drives up the cost of homebuilding to the point where the builder can only turn a profit on a 'luxury' house. Then there's the NIMBYs who don't want any more housing units built near then because-think supply and demand-more housing might make the property values go down-remember: their house is a casino, and they're gambling on it going up in price so they can cash out later. There's no easy fix for the high cost of housing in the West. Speaking of the homeless--I see plenty of them around where I work--their main occupation seems to be generating mountains of trash. While some are physically or mentally disabled, a lot of them are able-bodied and use wheelchairs as 'props' to gain sympathy from passers-by. I've seen them push the wheelchair, sit down in it pretending to be crippled, then get up and walk away pushing it again. A group of them were actually undermining a freeway overpass to make a flat spot to camp until the cops ran them off and CalTrans repaired and cemented the ground to keep them from doing it again. I visited Thailand in 2017 and China in 2019- the things that struck me about both places were: no bums, no trash, EVERYBODY working-even the profoundly disabled. Both places felt safe-you could walk down dark alleys and streets at night without trepidation-at least where I was. When I retire in a couple years I'll be looking really hard at Asia. Added bonus-i love the women!
