    I knew that 3D glasses had to do with polarization, but never knew about the circular variety. Damn, 69 years old and still learning thanks to you!

    Once again, this excellent channel goes a step beyond most others, and actually tells me something I didn't know (in this case, some of the details about the molecular structure of circular polarisers). Your videos should get way more views!

    Oh, and an answer to your question. I haven´t forget my 3D-glasses to theater, but I have forget my wallet in a kiosk that sells popcorn etc in a lounge of a theater. A friendly young woman run after me inside of theater and refused to take any reward about that. That event had a serious consequences.. we went to marry and now we have a son. This is true story. Had to add this here.

    How can you do everything so interesting and explain it so simply? I have understand, you have been a teacher? Why oh why we didn´t have teachers like you in my school-days!!? I´m from Finland and our school-system is praised to be so advanced and student-friendly. Bull... When I was at school I was about to get weary every day. We spend hours and hours learning something very simple and then practice again. Now my son goes school and really nothing has changed. There are levels, but as I fill out the initial form I told that he can read and write. What happens? He goes to group that is learning to read and mathematics were level 1+1=3. It took 2 months before they find that out and were really sorry that he was signed up in a wrong group. What does that tell about our educated school-system? I really really wish there was teachers like you. Man, You Rule! Hmm.. could you make a video about holograms, how they really work and what happens in quantum level? Thank You for this super-interesting channel and please, keep up the good work! (sorry about this long story).

    Hey, Nick. I was wondering if you could explain something that I genuinly can't seem to properly grasp;
    Hawking Radiation indicates that black holes eventually 'evaporates' and vanishes, due to all the mass being gone.
    How does Hawking radiation escape the event horizon when even electromagnetic waves cannot? I know it's due to virtual particles, but I seriously can't seem to grasp that.

      The virtual particles are not escaping from inside the horizon. Virtual particles are created in pairs and sometimes only one of them is inside the horizon. The other can be outside and is free to escape.
      (Of course, that's the grossly over-simplified explanation. I happen to know PBS Space Time is releasing a video on this soon. It might be worth checking out.)

    I have "accidentally" forgotten to return my Real 3D glasses on many occasions. This is mainly because I "accidentally" figured the glasses were part of the price to see the movie, and I don't trust them to not "accidentally" give me some glasses that were used and possibly has someone else' lice or other contaminant on them.

    I didn't know we were required to give back the glasses. I just walked out with a couple pairs, and nobody said anything. But then I give the rest back because I don't want any more. Do theaters actually care if they get them back?

      culwin no it's accounted for in the price of your movie ticket but if you give em back they'll just give them to someone else so it's a way to make more money essentialy

      +culwin So that was YOU!!! Seriously, though, those glasses are pretty expensive in the grand scheme of things (say, if a theater loses a dozen or so a show). They can range from $10 to $30 a pair, depending on what projection system they use. You probably just lucked up by getting lazy ushers. SHAME ON YOU!!! I've still got two pair....

    Nick, you've asked "Do you have a question that's driving you crazy?". I do. We take for granted the notion of "static energy", e.g., if I raise a weight upwards and put it on a shelf, it takes energy to do so, and that energy can be recovered later by letting it fall. My question is: What kind of energy IS that, and where IS it? If E=MC^2, does the object have more mass?

      Lifting the weight upward gives it what we call "potential energy." Energy isn't like a substance that exists. It doesn't have a "where." It just _exists_ or it doesn't. To answer your last question though, yes, the object would have more mass. (the extra height doesn't add much mass though, so you wouldn't be able to measure the difference)

    Hi, I am looking for a way in which an invisible projection can be viewed only by a 3D glass sort. That too each glass would view negative and positive version of the projection. Is invisible projection possible? Is negative and positive viewing possible with 3D glass?

    Hey, what are your thoughts on this, I've been wondering a lot about this lately when I watched your relativity series. . . is Math relative? Maybe you can do a video on that. . . take throwing a tennis ball for example. The standard quadratic representation of the shape the ball would travel wouldn't work in a situation with drastically different gravitational fields. But I'm not a mathematician, so, there could be a mathematical work around to this I'm missing. But I suspect math is relative just because of the fact the equations and theories we use to describe things and how they work are very relative to our earthly environment.

      The physics (scientific math) we use to describe things like tennis balls also works on things like planets orbiting stars and stars orbiting the centers of galaxies. It's not based on our earthly environment. If it was, we'd be failing at our job as physicists.

    In France, we buy the glasses at the entrance of the theatre for 1€ and we keep them at the end, so there is no point in giving them back

    Unrelated to this video, but how do we know that some particles are "fundamental"? As in, what's to say that electrons aren't made up of other stuff that's just really really small that we haven't yet been able to measure with our current technology?

      Because our model for those particles is very good without them being fundamental. There's no sense in adjusting the model until we come across an experiment that contradicts the one we have.

    The theater I go to gave us a pair that had a normal right eyepiece. But the left was strange, if you look through it you see only blue shades and if you tilt it and make vortical you only see red shades.
    Can you explain that to me?

    ok, good video. makes all sense. however(!)
    the glasses that i "forgot" to give back behave in a way that was not explained in this video.
    pop out the glasses so that you can put them on top of each other and rotate.
    depending on which side they face each other, and also depending on the angle you rotate them, they will let light through more or less and even block it completely at a certain angle.
    if the polarization was circlar, should it be irrelevant in what angle they face each other?
    really interested in your answer
    ps: here in amsterdam they let you keep the glasses so no biggy

      No, the angle still matters in a circular polarizer because a circular polarizer has a linear polarizer inside it. As I explained in this video, they're a linear polarizer combined with a quarter wave plate. The angle definitely matters.

      thank you for replying. your answer clarifies the matter to the degree that i am no longer unsure if my cineman uses linear or circular polarization glasses. but it is still unclear how the angle actually matters in the process. could you make a follow up video to go more in depth on the matter? also is it the same material for the glasses and the polarizer or is the polarizer special?

      ok, sorry for double reply. but i got really confused now. i rewatched the video. and you are right that you explained there is a linear polarizer plus a doublerefractor. but 1:19 really threw me off. why need the circular polarizer in the first place? both would dimm when i tilt my head and circular polarization seems to be linear polarization with extra complexity added "ontop" of it. so why do the extra step in the first place?

      In a circular polarizer, the order of the two pieces (linear polarizer and quarter wave plate) also matters. The light doesn't dim when you tip your head in 3D glasses because the circular light hits the quarter wave plate first. That plate (or "double-refractor") turns the circular light back into linear light... and the linear polarizer blocks the light. In other words, if the light hits the wave plate first, all that matters is the angle between that plate and the linear polarizer. If the light hits the polarizer first, that's when you can turn it and block light. Circular polarizers are very picky.

    you said electron cloud maybe it due to uncertainty of the electron to be present at any point. It's the probability cloud of electron position where it could probably be found. Am I right?

      The Science Asylum Wait... what?? We used those in movie theatres (in Sweden) in like 2005! I watched SpyKids3D with those glasses. Am I thinking of something else?

      If they used the red/blue ones, it couldn't have possibly looked that good. They might have been able to do it with a low-color background, but definitely not with the people in the foreground.

    IMAX 3D actually uses linear polarization, while standard 3D cinemas use circular polarization.

    I have a doubt regarding em waves.....we know that a magnetic field is produced when magnetic field lines pass from North Pole to South right?!.... But my question is: how is a magnetic field produced in em waves...I mean there are no poles over there right??

      The magnetic field isn't really produced by magnetic poles. We label "poles" of a permanent magnetic based on what the magnetic field looks like. The "poles" are made up things.

      Both electric and magnetic fields are created by charges (microscopic particles). The magnetic field of a permanent magnet doesn't come from "poles." It comes from electrons.

      Yep! Dual lenses or 2 entire camera simultaneously (if they're doing it properly).

    If that it's all the needed way we need very specific monitors in the order to support 3D ?
    And we don't able to watch 3D movies with regular monitor and 3D glasses ?

    How about 30 Spectral Lensing glasses? Trust me, and look them up. They come with a coloring book but try them at an art gallery!!! You can use them anywhere (just not for long, they can give you headaches and/or make you ill). P.S. Not trying to sell you anything, I just think it's one of the most amazing pieces of tech i've ever seen!

      @Rose Jenna Prieto Arias Since my original comment, I actually found and purchased a 10 pack of the very glasses I commented about without having to buy another kids coloring book. They go by a few different terms but rainbow depth or spectrum stretch should point you better to what I'm talking about. I like these glasses best because they let in everything, and don't require the image to be altered or designed specifically for them, they work with any image (technically, but best results are with "true" colors like actual Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and blue. Pastel wavelengths are "fuzzy" because of the extra colors coming in due to the white needed for the effect of pastels). Seriously, I took a pair of these glasses to a local art gallery and the pieces with strong "true" colors looked AMAZING in 3D when I tried them on and looked at them. Anachrome, if I understand the technology correctly, requires the image to be created a specific way in order to work properly.

      If you close one eye, the lens for the open eye will be black in the mirror.

    They could embed a coil inside the glasses's frame like those anti-theft stickers. But maybe the cost defeats the whole purpose.
