- In the hills of San Fernando is the Great Wall, the most famous Chinese restaurant on the island. This is a rags-to-riches story of owner Maurice Soong, whose passion for quality and service has won him widespread affection and respect. As they dance to the infectious calypso music of the island’s annual Carnival, members of the Soong family reflect on how their assimilation and personal choices will affect Maurice's beloved restaurant.
More videos. Love your work. There are so many stories from overseas Chinese all around every countries.
As a Trinidadian, I absolutely loved this. I think Chinese-Trinis are some of the coolest people tbh. I'm from the North-West of the island and I only went to Soong's for the first time earlier this year and I loved it.
glad you enjoy it. As a Trini, you should know!
This is so nice to see very proud of their family✌
Wow, I love this! It reminds me of my parents and all of my relatives. True Trinidadian.
I m Singaporean Chinese but i have lived and studied in Trinidad. Am always happy to see videos like this coz i miss Trinidad and Tobago. And its people. I think i can relate well to this story! 😊
I was a Singaporean too! Until age 12.
Wow! That was unexpected! So happy to know that! Can speak Singlish? @@cheukkwan
I just finished reading your book, "Have You Eaten Yet?" and enjoyed it greatly. Now I discover that you are also on TH-cam and I am enjoying it too! I share your interest in Chinese restaurants and try to frequent them when abroad and engage the owners or employees in conversation if they are not too busy. My family owned two Chinese restaurants in the Seattle area.
Welcome aboard!
Wonderful stories!! I recently found the book - Have You Eaten Yet? in the library, and it caught me right away at first sight of it. I'll try to leave a comment later when I finish reading the book. Thanks, Mr. Kwan. for doing this. It's a great contribution.
you are welcome
I just heard about this series on someone’s IG post, and just started watching. It is fabulous! Thank you, Mr. Kwan. This is so well made…great story, very touching and informative. Kudos.
Glad you enjoyed it!
good work!
Thank you Mr. Kwan for making these awesome documentaries. Did you ever make one in Jamaica? Chinese were deeply involved with the development of reggae music, which is how I came to discover the long history of Chinese in Jamaica, but I don’t know how much they influenced the local culinary culture. I’d love to hear some stories from there.
I made it to Trinidad. I have been to Jamaica, very similar culture
I always thought it odd but foodwise Chinese food isn't popular in Jamaica but yes, the Chinese are in the music industry bigtime in JA, but it's the Afro-Jamaicans who have sll the talent though...
This was great - hit upon it randomly. Thanks. x
You're so welcome!
And by the way best Chinese food ever!! still looking for the same fried rice everywhere I have lived
Mr. Song is sooo Trinidadian!
Which year was this film made?
shot in 2000
WOW////
Do you find it weird hearing Chinese people speak with island accents ?
I think it's weird when Asian people have southern accents lol
It's not weird
They are caribbean, trini people like everyone else. To not have the accent would be strange.
@@Sango-po5pito not have accent would be strange ?🤔🤔
why would it be weird?
i think it's pretty cool
