Awesome series about a legendary hero and Patriot of the American Revolution! "Our band is few but tried and true, our leader frank and bold. The British solider trembles, when Marion's name is told. Our fortress is the good green wood, our tent the cypress tree. We know the forest 'round us, as seamen know the sea. We know its walls of thorny vines, its glades of reedy grass. Its safe and silent islands, within the dark morass." (Ballad of Marion's Men)

Sacred to the memory of Brigadier General Francis Marion who departed this life on the 27th day of February 1795, in the sixty third year of his age, deeply regretted by all his fellow citizens.
History will record his worth and rising generations embalm his memory as one of the most distinguished and legendary Patriots of the American Revolution which elevated his native country to honor and independence and securing to her the blessings of liberty and peace.
This tribute of veneration and appreciation is erected in commemoration of the noble and disinterested virtues of the citizen, and the gallant exploits of the soldier, who lived without fear and died without reproach.

Wow. I saw this on the Sunday night Disneyland show in Australia when I was... mmm... 6 or 7. As others have commented, the tune has stuck in my head. Also, have others have said, it is probably not historically accurate at all but it did help engender a love of history in me. I ended up pursuing this love at university (albeit researching a time period a fair bit before the deeds depicted in the show.)
    Many thanks.
Maybe I'll do a Sunday roast and watch the shows then in homage to my childhood Sunday nights.
PS - Adventureland was my favourite and I also liked/was frightened by The Hardy Boys (or was that on Mickey Mouse Club?). I wonder if they are here somewhere?

Also by May of 1780 the Southern Army under Benjamin Lincoln had already surrendered when Charleston, SC fell to Sir Henry Clinton and the outposts mentioned were only established AFTER the fall of Charleston.
Beyond that though, things seem okay.

    (1) Now I know that Walt Disney had to be somewhat quick with his telling of the events leading up to summer of 1780, but still much of what he said was inaccurate.
By that time the war was at a stalemate in the North. Washington's army (which by the way was in crisis somewhat due to lack of payment and supplies from the Continental Congress) had the British cornered at New York, though the British held Canada. Neither army there was moving. The British were responding to the French...

Entertaining despite the fact it was dumbed down for young kids, who, when really young, have no concern or awareness of what's truly historically accurate, in terms of weapons, uniforms, strict chronology of events, etc. When I first saw this series, many years ago on Disney Channel, I was surprised and disappointed that Nielsen played Marion. It was hard for me to accept him in the role--not because of his later comedies, which I never saw, except in theater previews or brief glimpses on TV airings, but that I had my own image of the Swamp Fox, after years of reading about him, seeing realistic illustrations of him, etc. I'd've preferred an unknown actor in the role. Of course, Nielsen WAS unknown at the time. Eventually, I liked him well enough in the role but never was entirely satisfied. Not much of the swampy S.C. terrain was shown in the series either, the famous Lowcountry of the southeastern S.C., scene of many of Marion's campaigns. Of course, his band of partisans ranged over a much wider area than that, from Georgetown to present-day Columbia(Ft. Granby at the time). I've visited quite of few of his battle sites, plus his tomb near Santee, S.C.
Seems that the nearest swampy-looking ground nearest the studio was used to represent the terrain which inspired Tarleton to give him Marion the appelation "Swamp Fox". I guess there aren't too many convincing, 18th-century, Lowcountry-type swamps in southern Ca.! The actor who portrays Tarleton, whose name I forget, is pretty good in the role but not quite who I would've preferred either. Yes, the Green Dragoon was smooth, suave, and dashing but, in reality, a much-feared terror to American militia and troops. He was known as "Butcher Tarleton" and "Bloody Ban" during the war. He was at least partially responsible for more than one massacre of patriot soldiers after they'd surrendered. Of course, such horrendous facts are ignored in this series, no doubt due to their unsuitableness for young children to hear about in vivd descriptions. By the way, this Tarleton actor appears also in the 1950's 3-D color adventure called "Sangaree", set in post-Rev. War Savannah. He plays an unlikeable, devious, ladies' man in that one--a Loyalist unhappy with the way the war turned out. The film was made a few years before "Swamp Fox" and is viewable on You Tube in its entirety. It's the only other role I've ever seen him in. As an adult, I tire of so many Disney TV productions having to feature one or more songs but I fully understand the audience to which they were geared. The series also is harmed by familiar character actors showing up in both British & American roles(e.g., J. Pat O'Malley, for one)playing a redcoat one week, a patriot the next. I'm sure kids never noticed or cared. Most of Marion's documented battles are never shown or referred to, such as Parker's Ferry, Lenud's Ferry, Georgetown(in concert with Light-Horse Harry Lee), Quinby Bridge, Fort Motte, Sampit, Black Mingo, and Eutaw Springs. Most of the Disney series re-enacts only very small-scale, generic skirmishes, which go unnamed throughout, whether fictitious or real. None are recognizable, though, to a student of Marion lore, such as myself, as any of the actual documented ones. I'm sure no attempt was made to duplicate these due to limited budgets, impracticality in that era of filming outdoors, etc. There ARE many outdoor scenes, don't get me wrong, but none feature large-scale fights. As mentioned, most battles are highly localized and limited, such as a swirling cavalry fight around a Loyalist plantation house, probably the best battle sequence in the series. I regretted that neither Greene nor Light-Horse Harry Lee were given screen-time. Greene is mentioned but never shown. I don't believe Lee even was mentioned once. His troops were essential in helping Marion drive back the British. Finally, does anyone remember the 2-part, mid-60's Disney program "The Legend of Young Dick Turpin"? It's viewable on You Tube, also.

Frances Marion actually wore a pot on his head, not a tricorner hat with a tail on it! Marion was ahead of his time regarding helmets. Those lavish blue American uniforms in the opening sequences of this episode are really surprising, by the way. The Swamp Fox, Elfego Baca, and Texas John Slaughter were all loosely based on real people some of whose stories were crazier than anything on Disney's television shows. All these series were aimed at kids and squarely hit that target.

I saw these shows when I was a kid as well, that title song has stuck in my head all these years. A little perspective, however. He spent a good deal of time hunting down freed slaves, who naturally fought for the British. His treatment of the native population and his own slaves represent a stain on the idea of America. Apparently a successful fighter, though, using tactics reminiscent of the Viet Cong.

@@itsaguinness one of the other factors raised by the historical record of this time is the abolition movement in England gaining strength. In 1772 the British courts ruled in favour of a slave who had been purchased in Boston and then transported to England and had managed to escape. Consider how much of the resistance to the British was caused not by the swinish English overlords (who were definitely part of the story) but by the fierce Methodist abolitionists win England who might ruin the ability of the swinish colonial slaveowners to continue to make their fortunes off slaves.

Love the fact that the "hero" is actually a Canadian and therefore a part of the Commonwealth.

What hero is Canadian? Francis Marion was born in South Carolina.

More Disneyfied bull about a real person that was more fiction than fact. If he could lie about David Crockett with that nonsense show he did it with
every real person that they made a show about.
