So let's work on a general Minnesota accent. We're gonna go straight for the stereotype, and then you can kind of knock it back from there. Depending on what you're going for. So let's work on the oral posture of the Minnesota accent. Take a look at me saying this phrase. 'Oh geez, I've known him for 20 years or so.' So watch what's happening with my mouth. 'Oh geez, I've known him for 20 years or so.' So there's a lot of lip corner tension, and there's not a lot of jaw movement. So you get kind of a little bit of a smile there. They call it the Minnesota friendly accent.
The diphthong O. The two elements O in your Minnesota accent become shorter, to a more of a pure sound. So, Minnesota becomes Minnesota. O, O, Minnesota. The diphthong I. Because the jaw tension in the Minnesota accent, it brings that sound very far forward to I, I. I becomes I. And also, because the jaw doesn't move that much that R sound becomes kind of hard. So work and further are the R sounds in the words work and further. Work and further. So in this oral posture, the ah sound becomes more forward. So father becomes father. Gone becomes gone.
So what's the musicality of this accent? Listen to this phrase, 'Oh geez, I've known him for 20 years or so.' There's a lot of upward inflect. It's a very friendly accent there. So that tells you a little bit about the people from Minnesota, possibly. But don't take my word for it. Go listen to some native Minnesota speakers, and discover the accent for yourself. Take a look at the oral posture. Take a look at the sound changes, and the musicality. And it'll give you a good idea of what the accent is like.

I'm a Minnesotan and here in the Twin Cities we don't talk like the stereotypical Minnesota accent, lol!
Also, it seems like lots of Minnesotans are commenting on this... Did anyone else from Minnesota look up how to do a Minnesotan accent? Lol.

i lived in Minnesota for most of my live (Rochester) and i thought that i didn't have an accent but as soon as i moved to Washington literally the only thing i was getting asked/told was "where are you from" and "wow your accent is so thick" so just because you cant hear your accent doesn't mean other people cant as well

i grew up in western ND right on the MN border.. Now I live in Indiana and nearly weekly I run into people that comment on my thick accent. For example when I order Root Beer.. I usually have to repeat myself a few times. (I even try saying it the other way.)

I live 15 min from Rochester in Kasson and you here literally all the time people that have moved here asking why we talk the way we do. And we just think that it’s normal. but to people away from here it’s not normal. It’s the same thing for us. We all have different accents. And it’s pretty cool when we see how different it is from other people.

Don't know why...I grew up there & hear it every time I talk to someone from home. I also hear it at least once a week at my job...I can't tell the difference between Minnesota and Wisconsin accents though, but I can always tell that it's someone from one of those two states.

For the people here that say "We sound nothing like this." You are mostly wrong. Some people don't have as thick of an accent as this but we still say our o's and a's pretty long. We are so used to the way that we talk, that it's hard for us to hear our accent. Same with any other accent. I've went to other states and a lot of times when I say something, they ask me if I'm from Minnesota. So we do have an accent somewhat like this one.
Please no hate, I'm just stating my opinion.

@Pineapple EVERY single person in the world has an accent except those who don't speak. Everyone. And I grew up in MN & I when I'm at work, I always know when I'm talking to someone from MN or Wisconsin...I can't tell the difference between the two, but I definitely know it's one or the other. MN does have a very distinct accent, although some Minnesotans accents are much more pronounced. (For instance, there are only a few words which people catch my MN accent from, possibly because I moved away so long ago, but they still catch it if they're familiar with the accent.)

You have to live really far up north for this to apply. Most of the population lives in the Twin Cities and we don't sound like that. We have a slight accent but it's very different from this one. Mostly just affects how we say "bag" and "roof/root".

I moved to Minnesota from the South and y'all definitely have this type of accent and yes... even in "the cities." Dont be ashamed it's a cute and endearing accent. Hell even I have been picking it up from most of my customers having the accent, mostly in the long Os and hard Rs. The Is and As too. It's not mentioned in this video but people from MN have a certain way they say the long "a" in words like "cake." Like most people would say "iron RAYNGE" but up here its "iron REHNGE." Also the accent is stronger amongst those of Norwegian as well as Ojibwe ancestry.

I love how we go to the comment section and 98% percent of it is Minnesotans saying "We don't sound like that!!!!"
I'm Minnesotan, and it really is a toned down version of that, thicker on the range and North border.
(If you're trying, a really common Minnesota-specific saying is "Oh for cute" or "Oh for funny!")

I'm from Santa Rosa, CA (Northern) and I lived and worked for about 2 years in TN at a Starbucks. It was culture shock with all the Southern drawls but I loved how nice and friendly people were. One day, someone I was waiting on heard me speak and said, "Oh, you're not from around here!" I said I wasn't but asked them to play a game and guess. One person thought I was from Minnesota...lol...I don't know why though. I finally did I said from California and they all looked at me funny and said you don't sound like you're from California. I gathered they thought all Californians sounded like "valley girls", so I told them I was from Northern California...big difference...and they were like.."Ahhh...I get it"....I love different accents. My two favorite are the Scottish and Liverpool with the Bostonian, New Yorker and New Jersey included.

Try moving away for years and then coming back. It sounds quite a bit like this, although I do think that the MN accent has mellowed through the years. 😉

Native Minnesotan here from the Twin Cities. I definitely hear an accent, particularly when older generations talk, but this video ain’t it. We don’t all sound like Fargo, ND

I’m from the iron range and honestly we kinda sound like that up here but a veryyyyy toned down version most of the people that say that they don’t sound like this are from south, I’m very up north so that may be why I sound like that

It's not THAT noticeable. Our o's are definitely prominent and drawn out, but that's really only if you live on the range or anywhere north of the cities. I have a Minnesotan accent, and wow...this just...wow....

Every single person in the world that is able to speak has an accent. Your accent is normal to you so it sounds normal, but it IS an accent, it's just the accent you're used to hearing.

Nearly All the people in the UK use Doncha know and Yes betcha, The best Minasotan accent was on American Pickers. What a sweet beautiful accent he had, full of friendliness and an obvious Nordic background. As to an Irish accent, many places have that, as they were one of the biggest influx of English speakers. Parts of Eastern Canada sound pure Irish and they think they are speaking pure Canadian English. ( Fine example "Fitzees Fabrications)

This is more extreme than what it is actually like here, but the whole 'o' thing is something we definitely do. Also, it seems Minnesota is one of the only places where soda is simply called pop.

To all of the people in the comments that "don't think they sound like that", either you do, or you grew up in or south of Saint Cloud and have a Midwestern accent. I know I sound that way sometimes (I'm from the Red River Valley myself).
