I agree 100%, they also have more endurance than any other band at the time.....they could play for hours and hours and hours.........back in the day, when they would practice, they did an exercise where they would do an improvisational jam that would last for about 8 hours............no lie.
I honestly believe that this is the best YEM they have ever played..................and YEM is the most played song ever by phish in concert. Easily the best acapella jam they have ever performed live.
I always listened to this track for Fishman more than the rest of the band, if I’m being totally honest... Not only is he absolutely on fire and going for it like he’s drumming for his life in this version, but the drum sound in this particular venue is just incredible! I don’t know if I’ve heard a better sounding live recording (for my taste) of Phish than this song. There is just so much “pop” and perfect natural reverb to the kick and snare. I just can’t get enough, even after nearly 24 years of it!
sam hamdan those were my favorite years... The band was hungry, playing their early music and on fire. I like their ethereal funky and spacey sound that came later but something about watching a band this good coming up was powerful.
This track takes me back... Late 90s, harmony park then onward to alpine valley then it gets real hazy after living on heady goo balls and E for a month. I miss those days but am glad I made it out fairly unscathed. The album stuff is good but you just can’t compare to the live shows, each one was different, each was original and creative. And when you’re just grooving to a song and then they grab on to one small sound or riff and trip on it for like 10 minutes or more then bring you right back to the point in the song they left behind... amazing. Do people even have the attention span for it anymore?
We can argue which YEM is best, but this is top 3 for sure. The guitar solo in this is face melting and Page plays one of the funkiest organ solos I've ever heard to this day. Also as for Live One, it has (imo) the best (no jam) Chalkdust and the best Harry Hood (can also be argued, but this is my fav and always has been). The mix on Live One is unparalleled.
Yeah for those of us that were following the band and trading cassette bootlegs from the early 90s to the release of this CD, the sound quality as they were copied and re-copied would always dilute the quality and you almost never got super clean sounding mic'd drums like on this double CD release. There were maybe a handful of tapes with a quality almost to the level of this (1993 Crest Theatre / Gamehenge) and maybe another one, but mostly one of the instruments overpowered the others and the drums were never this crisp.
A Live One was my introduction to Phish as well and as a young musician I couldn’t believe my ears and was shocked that a 4 piece band could sound like that. Completely unique and original. Incredibly tight. Saw them live for the first time a few months later and was once again blown away and hooked for life.

Very very true, But I think the best music group of all time is Florida Georgia Line and the Backstreet Boys together! But three years ago you would not have experienced their musical genius yet.
Even if you don't like Phish you have to respect the musicianship. Good Lord these fellas can play.

@@JayRebel wait, I might be misunderstanding your comment, but isn't this YEM from 12/7/94 in San Diego?
Fishman is a fuckin beast
I met a drummer that saw Fishman sit in and he played everything he wanted to. One remarkable drummer
5:38 is an interpolation of a section of Yes' Gates of Delirium, off of their album Relayer.
This was the first phish i ever heard in my life way back in 98 i never thought id still be listening to it and still enjoy it as much now as then
I agree, I first heard this back in 97 and it blew my mind. Still a solid album!
12 min in. When the goosebumps really start appearing. Brings me back.
+phishfan120 11:29 for me, but yup!
+mark shirazi Phish just isn't the same now, but back before nye 2000 I lived for those jams. Good times.
phishfan120 shit, by 10 minutes in, I've already melted into the carpet. That first resolution at 2:52 just destroys me.
@@lvbuckeye love every minute but it gives me goosebumps and makes me jump around at 5:55 every time I listen to this version
At 4:00 it’s like taking flight. So happy my dad found this double disk live cd at a thrift store 10 years ago. Absolutely solid band!

OMG CAN THESE GUYS JAM? I LOVE IT
The nod to Ladysmith Black Mambazzo is, and has always been, especially nice.
I really wish they would write more songs like this with incredible compositions
Petrichor is about as close as we can get these days......
Check out some of the composed sections of Treys ‘Ghosts of the Forest’ material
Trey wrote this in the 80s. They're on to other things now. For better or worse.

this is the CD that got me into Phish. it also spoiled me audio wise - I wish every board recording was mixed like this album.
Ya Paul Languedoc miixed this iirc. It's sounds incredible.
