That would be a blast!!! But, I want a big raft, those rapids are huge for a kayak!!! The Colorado River in the USA is 48 degrees F. year round, VERY COLD; so a kayak would be a "cold ride" down those rapids, I heard the Zambezi is warm water. Big difference!!! It is better to " stay in the raft or kayak when running Colorado River rapids."
Video got some nice vibes! I am Goin to the zam in September for the first time. Do you have any recommendations to avoid typical pitfalls and to avoid the crocs ? ;)
The Zam is a big friendly giant although... Minus rapids are for very experienced paddlers only. You do not want to swim there. The boof at 5 has changed a litte and you can get worked below it. It normally flushes you out though. Swimming 6 you will probably get to test your breath hold if you get pushed down river left. Its a simple enogh line though. 7 is the most technical and longest . 8 is big , go centre or centre left(Star Trek) if you feel brave. Not many paddlers get surfed and swim like he did in the video. Im not sure when he went down but the level looked a little weird. 9 is a easy line but if you mess it you will get seriously worked, One guy I know did a 40 sec hold down there.But as I said its a simple enough line but very daunting. 11 is one of my scariest rapids . It looks easy and generally is , but those boils and seam lines can cause havoc and serious downtime. 12b is a super fun surf wave if you get it right. The rest is no worries, well.... mind that center hole in 15.18 is big and powerful . you can get pounded there and violently surfed but you will flush through. Dropping into 18 is quite an expereince and is way bigger than the videos show. The whole river in fact is way bigger in real life , way bigger. Have fun and pay your respects to the river god NyamiNyami
