Just because of listening without any shadowing and other speaking exercises?
@thisisdriveingtohell why do we need to do shadowing while we can hear everything exactly in details and the way they speak eng? It can be appropriate for a person who tries to speak like a real native speaker but what if we got our own accents to be able to speak this Language. Not everybody who speaks eng fluently didn't try that shadowing except they didn't know or thought it's not that necessary

Hello Luke, I am from Shanghai and the city is really foreigner- friendly, with English signage almost everywhere and most of young people could speak English. About politics, I totally understand that it is hard to talk about China by avoiding this topic from a foreign perspective. Our country is growing massively year on year and its position in the world is going to be more significant than before. Hopefully I could meet you in Shanghai or any places in the world😀

It' s great to be bilingual, greater is being bilingual in indoeuropean and tonal or ideograms languages. According to neuroscientific studies that broadens neuronal connections because different areas of your brain are involved.
A bit of envy for bilinguals who can't remember having studied the languages while I have clearly in my mind the afternoons passed hitting the english and french books

Love your podcast Luke.❤ It’s very thought-provoking to hear what Charles has shared of his experience of being a foreign journalist in Mainland China. I’m from China Mainland and currently working in the UK. Therefore, I came all the way to TH-cam comment section after hearing your episode in Apple Podcast, coz I have to drop my comment 😂 I do understand why some of our Chinese ppl holding a bit holistic view about those journalists. We have all seen how bbc had manipulated the perspective of how they falsely and misleadingly presented their story about modern China very few years ago, and some of the opportunistic journalists unscrupulously baiting or making misinterpretation for clicks from the nationalisms. Those villagers, they have no way to identify the real identity and intentions of this foreign man. Hence probably why, they want the government to be involved. Coz’ with the presence of government, they would risk no responsibility of any outcomes of the unethical journalism. Bc government will act like a safe net, in this case, and takeover from whatever beyond control or goes wrong. I understand how frustrating it must be when Charles first encountered this situation. But also, I just wanna make sure both of the stances can be seen and weighed legitimately; The villagers&the journalists, and why the government would be there from the first place.🙂

Also, yes, monitoring foreign journalists and any activities involved with foreigners and foreign funds is very strict. There is a specific department that manages those foreign non-government organizations (such as Oxfam) in China. You need to submit your monthly report and yearly report on time, list the activities you will hold in the next month and whether foreigners will attend, and get approved. Then you can hold the activities. Although other countries may also have similar departments, the process in China is harder because every project and activity needs to be approved. and if your foreign colleagues want to visit the local project, such as the schools and communities, you need more processes and paperwork to get permitted. but don't worry, we figured out our own way and method to communicate with those government people, and try to help more people in rural areas.
Chinese people aren’t capable of changing the situation,what we can do is just adapt to it,to be happy as much as possible even without real freedom

without practicing Shadowing in spoken english, we wouldn't be eable to speak english fluently? that's a real question a lot of learners confused about and I'm the one of them. If you saw my comment here please explain from your point of view as a native speaker I will take it as a true forever.
Shadowing can help but there are other things you should do as well, including studying the phonemic script and ultimately getting feedback and coaching from a voice coach. But some people seem to be able to do it just by shadowing.
A question to ask yourself - do you really need to sound like a native speaker? Just make sure you are clear and there are no misunderstandings when you communicate.

If I watch this video with English subtitles, I understand about 90% of it, if I only read subtitles without watching the video, I understand 98%, but if I watch it without subtitles, I only understand around 50-60%... Which type of listening do you think I should focus on?
Clearly you are better at reading than listening, so I suggest that you continue listening without the subtitles in order to focus on your listening skills.

I was struggling with the same problem. Try listening to the podcast with subtitles and then a second time without subtitles. I know the episodes are long, but you can only listen to them for 5-10 minutes. This method helped me. Now I listen a lot of english podcasts ( not only LEP) and I rather don't have problems with understanding.

Very nice topic! But I feel not very good that western journalists only blame Chinese government when the people don’t want to talk with them. Why don’t they check how many western reports uses Chinese people to make fake news? Many people were so open and happy, but their words were cut and selected to make stories with different meanings. Nobody likes being fooled again and again. We don’t like talking politics, but some are always relating China with politics. I sometimes feel so tired about this, people are not living with politics, can western journalists not imagine/create problems with pre-assumption? I lived different countries, and cannot see a big difference in the influence of politics on daily lives between China and the West. I can understand your system, why can’t you?

The UN cannot find evidence in Xinjiang. People in Xinjiang have good lives. Have your sympathy for those who really need.
