"At Home with Helen" = a different video today - cooking and crafting!

- Today's video is a little bit different, I thought it might be nice to do a monthly 'practical slot'....
It's quite difficult filming some of these so please bear with me, I'm sure I'll get better in time. Hope you like it.
It is a bit long... you can always fast forward! The first half is baking cakes and the second half is a couple of projects on my Cricut machine. #cricut
I live in Cyprus and you have no idea how lovely it is to hear little English birdsong in the background...🐦I miss it so much...x

The blue dress you are wearing just looks so lovely on you, blue is definitely your colour. Hattie's cake is amazing, you really can put your hand to anything. Hope she has a fabulous time. I just look your laid-back attitude to housework etc. My Mum always use to say to me, "it will still be there tomorrow", to which I would reply, "that's just it, I don't want it there tomorrow". Now after 40 years of marriage this year I am realising she was right. So don't give a toss quite so much. xx

Oh my mum had her Kenwood mixer and never had another one. She made wedding cakes and birthday cakes (she was a cook) and she only ever used that mixer. I’m 50 and she had it all the time I can remember. It was a cream and blue colour, or discolour ha ha. It never failed her until the motor actually conked out. A proper bit of kit. Lovely video 😊

Like you had my Kenwood when I was first married at 21 used it at multiple times per week so when it died a few years ago wanted another Kenwood chef and to my dismay had to return a few months after purchase but it came back fine didn’t give me much faith on its longevity after 40 years before! I was intrigued to see you put your big cake in a cold oven or did I imagine that, how did it turn out as have always heated my oven beforehand unless using the Aga switched off in summer, too expensive to run and too hot!?? I love your craft videos thanks so much for sharing. Lucky Wendy loved what you did. My daughter and I thought about getting a Cricut machine look fun.😊
I didn't preheat the oven, not really necessary is a fan oven.
The Cricut machines are fun. I'll use the 'Joy' next time as that is smaller and cheaper and covers most options xx

I know someone who does specific things on each day of the week ie ironing Monday,clean bathrooms Tuesdays etc..I say get a life it will still be there when you've gone!! I just do it when I see it needs doing 😂

What a great idea to have At Home with Helen videos, it’s always interesting to watch others cook and craft and to learn from them. So looking forward to more 🎉. I admire anyone using the Cricut machine - but it’s not for me, I get in a sticky mess just using sellotape 😂 x

It's not always that difficult. I'll do another little project with my 'Joy' machine which is smaller and cheaper and does most things xx
I enjoy anything you do ! Like your dress and it looks cool and comfortable. Homemade is so much better than shop bought . Your kitchen is perfect for demonstration. That weighing machine is nice , useful. I usually measure with an old tablespoon . I wouldn't trust a modern one to measure an ounce . Love Kay

Helen: You have such patience to do that craft. I am impressed, really. Your cakes look delicious. My grandmother from Scotland, that moved to Canada, would have made that Jam Cake. Baking is not my best chef skill. I can cook anything else, but when it comes to baking, I need your skills. The cakes either fall, do not come out of the pan well, or I eat all of it even if it does not look great. Ha Ha. Your backyard looks beautiful. The best to you, always. Cathy xoxo

Hi Helen, I am a crafter and have had Cricut machines for years, i also have another electronic cutting machine, it was lovely to see you demonstrating using a cricut , sometimes when people demo Cricuts they try to make a big thing out of it, i label everything in sight too, also loved the cake making

I also shop Costco - didn’t realize they were in Europe also - mainly for paper products- i agree on new- news - freezing heavy cream👏🏻 cricut machine great but with 3 sewing machines, one being embroidery, so, was strong and resisted cricut!lol. Hattie - Happy Birthday - our little treat box opener - you and your brother make it so enjoyable!! Fun video! Back to sewing - making a baby quilt for gift so, have to get caught up!!❤️

Hi Helen, I really enjoyed this video, I prefer the cooking but even so, very interesting. Such a thoughtful gift idea you are a lovely friend and very patient. Talking of cakes I made my sons wedding cake, never made one before😮 and never again. I made it the day before the wedding. Was I mad???
The cake did turn out amazing tho, 2 tiers, chocolate sponge in one and plain Victoria sponge in the other. Cut each in half put jam and buttercream in the middle of one, chocolate buttercream in the other and finished with white buttercream (used purple food colouring to cancel out the yellow) covering the outside. Decorated it with sugar flowers. My nerves were shot!! Didn’t have any left over and it tasted so fresh. Saved them loads of money too. As I said never again, I can underestand why occasion cakes cost so much money. Thank you 😊
Wow, well done. I couldn't take that pressure the day before a wedding! But then again I did the flowers for all three of mine! haha xx

Hi Helen, like this video and board turned out well.
If you get application/transfer tape , it’s low tack for vinyl transfer. Also pop the vinyl face down and peel the vinyl backing off the app paper instead of the other way about. Look forward to more.
