I drive a DUKW! On a lake! (60,000 subscribers!)

  • Thanks to all who have helped HubNut reach 60,000 subscribers! To celebrate the impending milestone, I was fortunate back in January 2020 to enjoy a DUKW or DUCK experience. These six-wheel amphibious trucks were designed during the Second World War, but many now live a happier life entertaining tourists.
I'm hugely grateful to rotoruaducktou... for being so helpful with this video and for letting me drive! Or was that Skipper? I hope they can get back to business once Lockdown is over.
HubNut goodies can be purchased at hubnut.org where you'll also find support options. Or, support HubNut at / hubnut
Don't forget to like the video if you like it, and share with your friends if you really like it! Thank you all.

I always feel particularly nostalgic about the DUKW. I remember when we recently moved to a village up north (netherlands) and they had a sort of military vehicle parade in the main street. This was in 1995, so it must have been the 60 year anniversary of our liberation by the Canadians. They even went over the old bow-bridge which in hindsight would have been a bad idea because it wasn't built to deal with heavy material of the type shown in this video. They must have been aware of this because anything over 2/3 tonnes would take the long way around and used a different bridge, so it really was kind of a military operation in itself. I remember there was at least one Sherman and some other tracked vehicles. We used to live on the outskirt of town near the provincial road, and the whole day there were bunches of old military vehicles just passing by like it was normal. I also distinctly remember they set up a "forward command post" with a wooden .30 cal on a street corner near the monument. I was dying to play with it but some old guy scared me away telling me that sort of thing isn't for kids. As a kid I used to play "war" ALL the time with the other kids in my neighbourhood and always had a particular interest in WW2, to the point I stole "a bridge to far" from the school library. I still have it.
One can imagine the size of my eyes at all this material just being there in the streets. Truly living history.

Lived in Sydney around 1970, and DUKWs could be seen every day, going down the road, full of men in uniform, with their vehicle propellers spinning merrily. It seems that they didn't bother disengaging it, or else there was clutch slippage! Would love the chance to drive one, or maybe a Stalwart. Thanks for the video, Ian.

There was one in Cornwall back in the '70s. I was used between St. Michael's Mount and Marazion beach. Imagine 8-year-old me playing with bucket and spade on the beach as one of these things comes out of the water and drives up the beach! A small boy's dream that no one as school would believe the tall tales that would come from seeing a boat turn in to a lorry.

When I was a boy (regrettably around 1948) Southport Corporation Transport had DUKWs painted in their livery of crimson and cream. Civic pride meant that the lampposts had the same livery! So, it was possible to get a Corporation bus to the seafront and then get a Corporation DUKW across the beach and into the sea! There was also a beach service to Ainsdale operated with converted ex-army Bedford QL trucks. Everyone bangs on about austerity and gloom but we had some fun.

    • @ShedTV
      @ShedTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

When I was a boy in the early 80s the Southport DUKW was operating as a safety vehicle patrolling the beach. It rescued my ( embarrassed but very grateful) mum after she managed to get stranded on a sandbank by the incoming tide!

In the late 70s/early 80s they had one of these (painted bright pink for some reason) at Wicksteed Park near Kettering. They'd come driving down the hill at what seemed like ludicrous speed, smash into the water, and then cruise round the lake for a bit before driving back out. Don't think it's there anymore, but I remember riding that thing as a lad...

Congratulations on reaching 60K (I've been watching your stuff for years now, way back in the BX and maestro van days, I also said hello to you at the bromley pageant).
I'd love to have a go driving one of those myself.

What an awesome experience and an awesome vehicle - went on one of these on the Thames in London a couple of years ago. For the record, the Thames is def not as clear as Lake Tikitapu / Blue Lake... :)

Can't think of a more appropriate vehicle to commerate 60k subs, Ian. Wonderfully entertaining vid as always. :) Now, for 70k: a drive of a MCW Metrobus and/or a Volvo Ailsa. Has to happen at some point. ;)

When I was a child in the 1970's they were making trips from beach to sea in the summer for tourists in De Haan, Belgium. Good times!

Had a dry ride in one - one by a local manufacturer. But the trip in one of their hovercraft was wet & dry. #Sealand.

Congrats on reaching the 60K milestone Ian. All down to your hard work and seemingly endless optimism. Bet you never dreamed you'd be get behind the wheel of an ex WW2 amphibious landing craft!

How fab was that?! I did wonder what you were going to do for 60,000 subs. I wonder what 100,000 subs will bring? I remember DUKWs at some of the seaside resorts in Norfolk in the late 60s/early 70s when I was a child. Long gone, I'd imagine.
