Malshree Dhun as the beginning of the whole autumn, not just with the Dashai festival only. It can be understood that there is a special melody for each season in Nepal and Malshree is a melody for autumn.
The praise of Sapt Matrika is reflected in the Malshree tune which has become essential for the worship of Nava Durga. This tune can be sung and played by mixing any song and hymn related to Goddess Bhagwati. Malshree is a music that is completely associated with Dashain, especially the Newar castes of the Kathmandu Valley who play 'Khin Baja', 'Dhime Baja', Chhali and flute.
Due to the lack of proper research on Malshree Dhun, there is not any concrete evidence about origin and creator of Malshree dhun. Although various melodies have been created for playing in the 12 months since the time of Malla dynasty king Mahindra Malla in the 16th century, where other melodies get not very popular as malshree dhun. It seems that the propagation of this tune has already started during the reign of King Siddhinar Singh Malla, it can be estimated that the practice of playing Malshree tune started about 400 years ago.
There are many 'ragas' in music. Although this tune was initially played in the Malshree Raga, it seems to have been gradually modified from one generation to the next due to lack of note-to-note learning. That is why Malshree has its own separate existence in Nepal. The current Malshree tune falls under 'Kafi Thaat' of eastern classical music. Under the 'Kaafi Thaat', all the 7 notes will be used where, most dominant (Waadi) and dominant (Smwaadi) notes are 'Pa' (G) and 'Saa' (C), respectively. 'Malshree' sung and played in the hilly region of Nepal belong to another 'Raga'. Apart from Bada Dasai, it is also customary to sing Malshree with Damaru in 'Chaite dashain'.
