As an American who discovered The Hip after Gord's passing, they are by far the most underrated, under-appreciated and little known band of all time. Canadian bands always get short shrift, from Rush to BTO to the Guess Who, but the obscurity of The Hip is hard to comprehend.
The HIP were a Super-Sonic Stealth Fighter Jet. They flew under the mainstream radar at the speed of sound and light. For 30 years, they soared within my heart, and still do. A perfect band based upon extraordinary friendship, long term commitment to artistic craft, and electrifying musicianship, if there ever was one.
Gord is a magic soul he also helped the native American people and made healing music for the world he is the best the band Is he best too yaaaay Golden souls like wooohoool
I live in the states and first heard the hip when I was 29 years old-boy was I missing out. I know it's cliche to talk about how big this band should have been here in the states but honestly-it is our loss and Canada's gain-perfect synergy of flawless musicianship, transendent lyrics, and one of the best lead singers to ever do it-RIP Gord
Yep, as a fellow American I share your sentiment. The Hip should have been bigger 'south of the border.' I was fortunate to grow up in Albany, NY where they actually played Tragically Hip songs like "At the Hundredth Meridian" on the radio, but every time I've seen The Hip in the States the majority of attendees are Candian expats. They were such a killer band that deserved to be bigger outside of Canada.
I’ve been a Hip fan since the late 80s. As a Canadian, I compare their gift to us as Pearl Jam is a gift to you South of the border. Both bands have(had:RIP Gord) amazing leads, are wonderful humanitarians and love their fans.
Yer exactly damn right. Those damn beautiful Canucks brought us something we weren't used to. Fell in love with them at edgefest 1992, I think. Will always be my favorite group of people that got together and stayed together. For always the right reasons. Because they had to.
This song is unbelievably gorgeous. It damn near brought me to tears when I saw them performance this at their last concert. This band is sorely missed.
Im so glad i got to see them at the orpheum, realized i didn't have my ticket at the door, im sure the ticket guy saw the look of panic on my face before i darted under the velvet rope and thats why he didn't chase me down. 🙏
Thanks man, I call the day he passed the day Canada cried. I was standing in a crowd of people I didn't know, crying and hugging eachother, it was one of the most beautiful and sad moments I've been a part of.
@@sketchtown6663 Thanks for sharing, that's a sad and beautiful moment for sure. When you and people you've never met can come together and share tears and hugs over shared grief, touching to say the least.
What a DRAG about Gord! As an American, I'm THANKFUL for discovering the Hip in the early 90s! Canada, sorry for the loss of one of your National Treasures!!
As a Canadian, i thank you Carol, but they are just as much your band as mine/ours. I too was lucky to catch a ride with them way back in 1990. Many great memories seeing the band with my friends and playing their tunes in all sorts of occasions.....caught a Toronto show on their final tour. It was sad but joyful. cheers to ya Carol.
I was not even aware of this group until I won Tragically hip album when entered a contest while in college. Gift shop was the first song I played then I became hooked to this group. Love this song because of its deep meaning. Gord is in heaven.
and here is seems .. I am again xxxxxxxx this listening here is great .. I can enjoy my fav & dance like there's no one watching... & for that .. I am thankful - music is my life xx
The first time I heard this was 1996. I drove to San Diego. My first time there. It was foggy with a Marine layer fog that washed over the freeway like waves. Speeding along with the ocean on the one side and these beautiful rolling hills on the other. I felt like it was the most perfect and beautiful song in that moment. I got teared up as I heard it because the beauty I saw matched what he was singing. "After a glimpse, over the top, the rest of the world becomes a Gift Shop". I did feel small in the presence of such beauty...but not out of place at all. Rest in Peace, man.
Fun fact, they were performing an early version of this song during their day for night tour, mixed into a medley. Heard it, and instantly wanted more.
I only discovered this band yesterday after hearing about the death of Gord Downie. I absolutely love them, I haven't been able to stop listening to them. My only regret is that I didn't discover them sooner. R.I.P Gord Downie, from Ireland.
Same here...I knew their one US hit but never paid attention otherwise...now I have been searching out their catalogue and loving it...better late than never I suppose...
I was born and raised in the U.K. where some of the best music ever created came from but now I live in Canada and I think the Hip are so incredibly underrated! I think they've produced the best rock music in the past 20 years.
Their best song in my opinion…and one of the best musings of human existence I’ve ever heard. It’s takes the angst, dread and ennui out of what would be a meaningless existence and gives it the power of joy it deserves. Yeah, we may be small and insignificant on the cosmic scale, but at the same time, you can feel at one with the sheer greatness of it all. I may be wrong, but that’s what this song means to me.
Gord Downie's voice is the sixth instrument in the Hip -- more than just lyric delivery, his voice transcends the song and makes it more than what it is. He made his talent into a gift for the world, and we are all richer having taken it in. Pray to the Almighty for peace for him, his family, the Hip, and their families.
I was very very fortunate to see them when they came to Nashville in support of this album. Packed wall to wall with Canadians, it was a great feeling to be amongst fellow Hip fans, even if I wasn't Canadian. Such a tremendous show they put on. And the thing was they sounded SO good in this tiny hole in the wall venue. They put on a show like they were playing for tens of thousands of people. Sadly that was the last time I saw them . But I got to see them. :)
Let you in on a little secret Sam, any HIP fan (regardless of nationality) who has either bought an album, or has been to a HIP show, is always considered to be an honorary Canadian, by way of all Canadian HIP fans. Another little secret is that Gord included American/Global references within his lyrics just as much, if not more than he did with Canadian references. Listen to the HIP's catalog and you might be surprised at how well Gord stitched the entire universe together with his poetic lyrics.
I feel that way about so many Hip songs. No matter how often I listen to most of their songs, I still get the feels like I did the first time hearing them.
Man, I saw them once at the Orpheum in Vancouver when the AC was broken. Everyone soaked in sweat in a September heatwave. Nobody cared. You were experiencing Canadiana incarnate and that's what we've lost. RIP Gord.
Floyd yes, Petty - not as deep. E Street band though does. Have to say that in the past year I have grown to appreciate the Hip more and more as I delve deeper. Truly one of the great all time bands - Not just Canadian all time but world wide.
Hip albums are the sound track to my growing up. Since 89' they have been there in my life. Today is a sad day. But they will always be there. Love you guys.
Chris Riddell I don't mean to disrespect your wishes... I just thought it would be nice to express my similar sentiments. Today seems so surreal. I think we Hip fans need to come together. I hope you're doing okay. Respect and blessings to you.
I love The Hip and I especially love this song. This song is truly a gift for us all, and will continue to be....bless Gord Downie. Many thanks for all the wonderful music he has shared with us over the years. I love him.
I once drove through the most amazing multi-colored thunderstorm from Kalamazoo, MI to Grand Rapids, MI while listening to the entirety of this record. I swear the lightning was all different colors, non-stop, and went exactly along to the music for the entire trip. The album ended as I came through a giant puddle of water in Grand Rapids, and the rain stopped at the same time. It was the most amazing experience, and I will never forget it. If I could , I'd watch that video on the couch over and over and over.
I lived in Banff for 5 years. The Hip was my soundtrack to my summers in the Rockies. There's nothing better than a camp fire, a cold beer and the Hip on a clear Canadian August night.
I've seen The Hip more times than I can honestly remember. They were my first concert when I was 15 at the Maple Leaf Gardens. New years Eve 1999, Woodstock 99 were some of the hi-lites but every show was just as amazing as the other. Your music lives on forever with your fans. Thanks for the great times.

I have lived within easy 2-hour driving distance from Niagara Falls and love hanging out there. I also made my liv as a long haul truck driver for years, running all the Lower 48 as well as Ontario and Quebec. The American West was where I felt the most peace. The same landscape in this video is what I used to surround my with.
I saw these guys almost randomly in Baltimore in 1990 give or take a year or two. Initially I was mildly amused, but then realized I was digging it. A lot. Then stupidity set in. Forgot about them. When you finally realize what you seek is that which you already have, the world really is a gift shop. Just remember, even someone on top of the world like Gord here couldn’t by his way out of the death sentence of cancer. Enjoy what you have, while you still have it.

The guitar work is brilliant and Gord's voice and writing blows me away. He is a unique dude. The Canadians in Winnipeg were quite moved by the show
That's not actually a very good analogy. Los Tigres Del Norte plays music heavily influenced by traditional Mexican music, essentially a folk group, and they sing in a language the majority of Americans don't understand. The Tragically Hip were a band playing a contemporary style of music that was popular in the US at the time. And for the record, you don't actually need to be familiar with Canadian culture to understand most of their music. It just helps in some cases. I mean, this particular song, Gift Shop, is about the Grand Canyon and has nothing to do with Canada. Courage (reference to a Canadian author aside) talks of human suffering that could apply to anyone. New Orleans Is Sinking is about a tourist in New Orleans, and Bobcaygeon is about neo-Nazis and a small town that even most Canadians have probably never heard of. (Heck, Gord Downie only chose it because he needed a rhyme.)
Stephen Wells if by majority, you mean the 49% of Hispanic Americans who outnumber Anglos, then yes. You are talking about a majority. Also, not every American would understand Canadian references either.
Although from the farthest south in Ontario I was blessed to meet Gordie and the boys a few times. They’d sail into the marina and hangout sometimes when playing shows around here. Absolutely amazing men that were true and full of heart.
The Tragically Hip will always be a big of Canadian Rock and Music history and they will never be forgotten and they should be nominated for the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.🤘🤘
Even though we knew this day would come eventually, it didn't make it hurt any less. You were a well-loved man who affected many lives with your charming acoustics and lyrical wit. I hope you find the peace you so sought after. † May God Bless Your Soul †
Downie you are a gift to music. May your voice sing loud and proud on this upcoming tour. Even if it is your last, it will never be the last time you sing.
Thank you !!!! For fighting... giving... loving all those touched you... To your family I thank you as well.. remember Gord may be beyond with the music angels, his legacy will grow forever...

The beautiful lull
The dangerous tug
We get to feel small
From high up above
And after a glimpse
Over the top
The rest of the world
Becomes a gift shop
The pendulum swings
For the horse like a man
Out over the rim
Is ice cream to him
The beautiful lull
The dangerous tug
We get to feel small
But not out of place at all
We're forced to bed
But we're free to dream
All us humans extras
All us hearded beings
And after a glimpse
Over the top
The rest of the world
Becomes a gift shop
I don't know what to believe
Sometimes I even forget
And if it's a lie
Terrorists made me say it
The beautiful lull
The dangerous tug
We get to feel small

Stephen Wells if by majority, you mean the 49% of Hispanic Americans who outnumber Anglos, then yes. You are talking about a majority.
Also, not every American would understand Canadian references either.
Stephen Wells really? You kinda do. Most Americans don’t think like Canadians and nor do they care.
Make Canada Hip again
RIP Gordie ! Theyll never make another one like you. A voice of a generation
Half a year later and it’s still hard to believe. Much love from Buffalo.
Going to miss you Gordie. You are Canada. Thanks Hip for an amazing career!
Although from the farthest south in Ontario I was blessed to meet Gordie and the boys a few times. They’d sail into the marina and hangout sometimes when playing shows around here. Absolutely amazing men that were true and full of heart.
How are you
His melodies are INCREDIBLE. Endless supply............................
Magical Soul Gord Is ⚞☼☾⚟
I am currently listening to a variety of music and am beginning to realize listening to nostalgic music can be like time travel...
Ain't that the truth
it's the entire package that makes this band great - but Gordy was the face heart and soul - god bless and god grant peace!
Listening in Feb 2021, remembering my childhood drives to family cottage... such a specific memory of Canada
4:41 that image should be on a high value bank note
2 GORDS 💞❣
The Tragically Hip will always be a big of Canadian Rock and Music history and they will never be forgotten and they should be nominated for the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.🤘🤘
WE LOVE YOU GORD!
Even though we knew this day would come eventually, it didn't make it hurt any less.
You were a well-loved man who affected many lives with your charming acoustics and lyrical wit.
I hope you find the peace you so sought after.
† May God Bless Your Soul †
the Hip are timeless Canadian legends
Downie you are a gift to music. May your voice sing loud and proud on this upcoming tour. Even if it is your last, it will never be the last time you sing.
I love the camera focus snapping into clarity the moment the initial beat is laid down
One of the most underrated bands of all time, along with Big Wreck (ironically on this same mix /playlist)
Thank you !!!! For fighting... giving... loving all those touched you... To your family I thank you as well.. remember Gord may be beyond with the music angels, his legacy will grow forever...
Exquisite.
Had some great times going to see The Hip throughout New York and some Toronto shows.
Nothing more Canadian then the 90's listening to THE HIP drinking Canadian over a bonfirein the winter watching hockey
Can't wait to see them this summer!
Seen these cats from when they played small venues to now... wtf? Awesome
Sing it Gord!! A truly amazing Canadian Band...one we're to be 'very proud' of
