My daughter is named Brooklin and it's a beautiful reminder of the bond they shared for such a short amount of time

Thankful for all the shows and Canada days I had with my friends following these guys around everywhere. Fucking wish it was 2002 again and in violent light had just come out. 20 years flies man.
I bought Trouble At The Henhouse the day it released. Ahead By A Century immediately became my favourite Hip song ever. When they played it as their last song ever, for some reason I felt honoured, like they were doing it for me. And I bawled like a baby. . .
A friend of mine was a HUGE Hip fan (his name is Hugh, so 'HUGE' is perfect). He went to see them play whenever they were playing anywhere within a couple of hundred miles or so of metro Detroit. He kept count, and I know he was well over 100 shows. He passed away on New Years Day. I've always played this song in standard tuning and 'cheated', so I decided to learn it properly in that open tuning. I have it down, but my voice is still a bit nasally from getting over a bad cold. I'll be doing my own solo version of it very soon for Hugh, with a little bit of extra riffing at the beginning on that open D chord.
People who ask why aren't these guys big in the US just don't get it. They are truly and utterly a Canadian band. They represent the pathetic sliver of genuine Canadian culture that still exists in a country dominated by a massive cultural juggernaut to the south. They write songs about Canada and our shared experience and they rarely pander to American audiences. Fifty Mission Cap, Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings, Courage, At the 100th Meridian and many more of their songs are about Canadians and Canada. They are just for you Canada and that's an incredibly rare gift. Don't question it.
My beef with them not being big in the U.S. is more about how, we'll get blamed for Bieber, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, when that's U.S.''s fault! They could have picked good music to import, they chose to ignore that Hip, Matt Good, Smalls, and so many other amazing Canadian bands. They are HUGE in Buffalo and NYS. A guy below said it too, they were on SNL. We appreciate them plenty down in the states. Neil Young too, Wise Man Tobes! LOL
I grew up in Buffalo, so I was lucky enough to be exposed to the Hip, but foolish enough not to be a huge fan in the 90s. Needless to say I eventually wised up. Its hard not to get choked up listening to them. Sometimes people touch you in a way that you could never expect; Gord Downie was one of those people. I never met him, but I love him. He makes me want to be a better person. Much the way that Jim Morrison felt when he witnessed the Natives on dawn's highway I feel a piece of Gord lives on in my soul, and for that I'm forever grateful.
I'm from MI, and at work we listen to a Canadian radio station. When Tal Bachman's She's So High comes on, my co-worker gets all jazzed up. He does the same when LEN's Steal My Sunshine comes on. But this ..... this is MY song. :) Love it.

Pure magic. They wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Thank you Gordon and boys. Vancouver's second concert was one of the most ethereal experiences of my life. Thank you so much.
Here is my Hip story. In the mid-90's in Erie, PA, I discovered I could get FM96 out of London on the radio. Anyway, heard this song one time that I never heard before about some guy who won the Leafs the Cup and they didn't win another until 1962. Being a hockey fan growing up watching Hockey Night in Canada (again out of Ch. 10 in London), I was like - this is great. I thought I never saw someone say that before. Singing about hockey. That's outstanding, So I jumped right in and started my love of the Hip as much as an American guy could. Was so excited to see them both times they came to Erie. Not sure why I felt compelled to post this now but there it is. What a ride!
Every time I hear this song I feel something I can't describe, I remember I was waking up at 6 am make my breakfast, and go laying to my bed while watching Anne with an E, I really miss these days so badly😔
@Hit Girl Thank you for the suggestion. I shall definitely go and have a listen. Music is a great passion of mine and to find new artists who can inspire me is better than gold.
@@nicholasnaicker5621 I do agree with you. Especially the bands where the lyrics have deep meaning, and inspires me. Not this cotton candy mass produced nonsense.
"and disappointing you is getting me down." Who hasn't said THAT to themselves, at some point? I cannot believe this gong is 22 years old because, well, it is timeless...
Being of the age to appreciate the imagery presented by the video director throughout, I am most struck by the monochrome image of 'the back of Dad's head' from the perspective of the back seat in an Oldsmobile land yacht @ 1:16 Terrific song. Great musicians. Thanks for giving music to the memories.
Gord Downey is our Unofficial Poet Laureate. ... just heard this morning that he's got terminal brain cancer ... but the Hip is going on tour. ... amazing man... GREAT Artist.
One of the greatest voices and bands ever..American here and I have always been impressed by so many great Canadian singer/poets.. music from the heart…Go Canada, you’re the best!🇨🇦🇨🇦.
As I lay here in bed in NYC I am thankful for my experiences in Toronto mainly because I found the Tragically Hip. The song writing and heartfelt style of music makes me smile every time I listen.
This film clip is so Canadian... From the coffee mug to the car seats to the old ski doo next to the old house. I live in Ontario in the late Nineties and this video sums it up.. Now back on Oz. RIP Gordo.
I'm from Florida and although I heard of them in the early 90s, I am only now discovering how deep their catalog of music is. They have such a wonderfully unique sound and I can see why they are so loved. I wish more Americans knew just how important they were/are/will probably forever be. I love their music!!
How did these guys not take off after "Grace, Too" on Saturday Night Live? One of the best SNL performances I've ever seen (for the first time yesterday). Used to own a cd shop on University Wisconsin campus in the early 90's...was playing "Trouble at the Henhouse", and in walked a drop-dead Canadian girl, who approached me and gave me a kiss on the cheek in appreciation of having the Hip on the house stereo. Became aware of Canada's love for this band at that moment. Have since come to know this is (was) one of the best bands in the world. Period. Canada: I shall forever respect my neighbors to the north for giving us this gift. Thank you Kingston.
I can only image what it would have been like to have been in Kingston but i am so grateful to have seen this final concert live with the rest of Canada. Music like the Hip's helped me deal with some very dark times and can only hope that knowing how many people's who's lives were touched by Gord and the rest of the band can be a source of comfort in the future.
I was in the square that night. It almost didn't seem real. Everyone so happy and so sad all at once. It seems like yesterday, but it's almost 3 years since that show now.
They played at my high school (Philemon Wright) prom in June 1987. We were ahead, if not by a century, at least by two or three years in booking the Hip.
Absolutely. We are out there. My 4yo daughter absolutely loves the hip. It's the thing I am most proud of, that I was able to pass my love of the Hip onto her. Her favorite songs are Bobcaygeon, Courage, Ahead by a Century, and Fiddlers Green. She loves all of their music, though. The next generation will know them.
Getting nostalgic about childhood summers, my father would listen to a bit of the discography on long car rides up to Sault Ste. Marie; It's so fitting for Canadian back-country.
This was the first song I had truly enjoyed from The Hip (given my young age at the time) and introduced me to their huge library of successful singles on the airwaves from beforehand. Such a sountrack for this country. I personally was so happy this was their finale song last night, that and incredibly sad because I knew it was the end. What an incredible group, what an incredible night.
I am stunned by that news. I'm a Yank, and a huge fan since '94. Always hoped they would be more appreciated in the States, but it never happened. Oh well, that's everyones' loss down here. Keep fightin' Gord, we need you and the band around for a few more decades anyway. You Canadians are very lucky to claim them as yours.
Sadly, I’m a little behind but just finished watching the last episode of Anne with an E last night with my husband, on Netflix. Every time we watched an episode I was haunted by the fantastic opening song by The Tragically Hip. So I decided to look it up because I loved the music. Now I’m deeply saddened about the death of Gorden and the ending of Anne with an E. I definitely am going to search for the CD by Tragically Hip. Just love their music. It’s really unfair how some really great bands don’t become internationally famous. I have a heavy heart for the ending of Anne with an E and the passing of a brilliant artist in The Tragically Hip band. I’m 72 yrs old, and life can be so unfair. At least we can still listen to the great music. RIP
Mauricela First got a taste of them in 1992. I moved to an area without cable, so I got satellite TV and there was a Canadian music TV channel, been hooked since then.
I hear you, my friend. I've lost five members of my family to cancer, and just last month, a very good friend. Just now, one of my Aunts is fighting a very aggressive form of breast cancer and she has this weird protein in her that actually feeds her cancer. Though, I could choose to be angry and dismissive, I choose to be positive and hopeful. That's what is needed right now -- for us and them.
I’m reporting from Türkiye. Anne With An “E” is the series of my life. I love everything about it. This song transports me to a completely different universe where everything works perfectly. Beautiful weather, green meadows, my heart is full of love and happiness. x x x 💝
I remember an interview with Gord on Q, (with a certain host who will not be named,) where he said he never plans to quit. He will be climbing the stage curtains when he's 80. Here's hoping you still get to 80 Gord!

The Tragically Hip ruled rock and never got the attention deserved given they did have the visual noise to market them. They were poets with instruments, especially when they rock. It's sweet they finally found fame via this heartfelt song. Now let's rock!
The best 'band' of all time. They were the pure definition of a band... these guys did everything together for 30 years, every aspect of the music and life. They are all wonderful guys who make wonderful music.

Anybody else here depressed looking for some inspiring music to keep living? No? Just me?
Keep busy and be SOCIAL. YOU'LL FIND OUT MANY MANY PEOPLE HAVE WORST PROBLEMS THAN YOURS. HOPE YOU'RE ALL RIGHT!
Pure magic. They wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Thank you Gordon and boys. Vancouver's second concert was one of the most ethereal experiences of my life. Thank you so much.
Great word, I had to look it up, but glad I did.
Trevor Theobald Thank you. I'm glad you did, too.
Gord, we all miss ya 😭 Its hard to listen to the Hip and not cry
So many songs (as compared to all other matter) seem to transcend all, thank you tragically hip, YOU my unknown friends, ARE ahead by a century
Every time I hear this song I feel something I can't describe, I remember I was waking up at 6 am make my breakfast, and go laying to my bed while watching Anne with an E, I really miss these days so badly😔
samee I know the feelings🥲🥲🥲
Why don’t you remake those memories ☺️ I have rewatched Awae 4 times just to relive those happy times
I just found this band. Glad I did, because the music speaks to me. By the way, I am a South African.
@Hit Girl Thank you for the suggestion. I shall definitely go and have a listen. Music is a great passion of mine and to find new artists who can inspire me is better than gold.
It's great to discover their great music!
Same here... From SA but now Canada is home... This band reminds me of the bands back home
@@nicholasnaicker5621 I do agree with you. Especially the bands where the lyrics have deep meaning, and inspires me. Not this cotton candy mass produced nonsense.
@@TheZaniQ It certainly is not that! Gord and the guys could put so much meaning into two lines, it is amazing. ❤
"and disappointing you is getting me down." Who hasn't said THAT to themselves, at some point? I cannot believe this gong is 22 years old because, well, it is timeless...
Being of the age to appreciate the imagery presented by the video director throughout, I am most struck by the monochrome image of 'the back of Dad's head' from the perspective of the back seat in an Oldsmobile land yacht @ 1:16
Terrific song. Great musicians. Thanks for giving music to the memories.
1996 being 16 waking up to this on the radio was easy on the ears.
I taped this video off muchmusic so I could blast every morning before school haha .. great band to grow up to.
Love this guys lyrics. Some Canadian dude, went by the name of Mold in Everquest, got me into the band. Thanks from an appreciative American, Mold.
+ellrick Canada is so cool!
Umbrella Academy S4 E5??? And Anne With An E fan at the same time?! Such a treat!!!
one of the finer works of 20th century canadian poetry. thanks, gord, for a career of exceptional artistry.
Geddy Lee Brought me here by saying it was his favourite song. I agree with him
This film clip is so Canadian...
The same reason Queen's SNL performance didn't make them take off
Hey Lance you're welcomed. Drop by sometime We would love to have you. Yes I'm from Kingston.
Did that girl give a fuck about hockey?
no problem dude, also you're welcome for Rush
There are a few songs that bring me to tears pretty much every time I hear them. This is one of them.
Anyone here not from a tv show, but simply because we are Canadian and this is our life blood?
@@Settee321 love that! Fiddler's Green is such a joy to play
Getting nostalgic about childhood summers, my father would listen to a bit of the discography on long car rides up to Sault Ste. Marie; It's so fitting for Canadian back-country.
Watching from SSM right now :)
Watching from Sault Ste. Marie! :D
Another texan here, this is the greatest. Thanks canada pour la mielluer musique
RIP
Our band Last Shot played this last Thursday night and the audience went wild. Rest In Peace Gord Downie. I will never forget meeting you.
Anne with and E really make me feel awesome it really is the definition of freedom
Gord was ahead by a century. He had courage. And grace, too.
It couldn't come at a worse time
And she was ahead by her century, Anne Shirley Cutberth ❤️
Wonderful song! Just watched Anne with an E....thought ..sure I've heard that tune before!
How are these guys not HUGE in the States?
How are they not HUGE in Australia!! My canadian flatmate told me about them
James Hunt if you look them up, you'll see their a Canadian institution, like maple syrup, hockey and the Hip!
Mauricela First got a taste of them in 1992. I moved to an area without cable, so I got satellite TV and there was a Canadian music TV channel, been hooked since then.
because they never sold out..that's why.
Mauricela haha yeah they're pretty good
I hope in a century we cure cancer
sooner would be very nice
It would be very nice
I hear you, my friend. I've lost five members of my family to cancer, and just last month, a very good friend. Just now, one of my Aunts is fighting a very aggressive form of breast cancer and she has this weird protein in her that actually feeds her cancer. Though, I could choose to be angry and dismissive, I choose to be positive and hopeful. That's what is needed right now -- for us and them.
Feel sorry for you and good luck to your aunt
we will never cure that industry.
I’m reporting from Türkiye. Anne With An “E” is the series of my life. I love everything about it. This song transports me to a completely different universe where everything works perfectly. Beautiful weather, green meadows, my heart is full of love and happiness. x x x 💝
I just heard this song the other day. I had to add it to it to my playlist. What a great song!!
「アンという名の少女」からここへ来ました。この素敵なドラマをNHKで最後まで見たいという願いがいつか叶いますように。
this is the most comfort song for me EVER
From Nova Scotia 15 years old love Tragically Hip 🇨🇦
Same here, From Dartmouth!
Good 4 u kid.
A very cool song, it got me thinking of hive minds, the wherefore and the why.
Ann with an E brought me here❤
I remember an interview with Gord on Q, (with a certain host who will not be named,) where he said he never plans to quit. He will be climbing the stage curtains when he's 80. Here's hoping you still get to 80 Gord!
YES
By some miracle of a chance, perhaps. But stranger things have happened.
He died last night unfortunately
Thank you Gord Downie & The Tragically Hip. Your music will live on forever. God Bless you
RIP Gord. Your love and words of wisdom live on forever!
Hip's final concert tonight in Kingston Ontario! August 20th 2016.
It was beautiful. Still tears of joy and sadness flowing
I remember hearing this on the radio last year, and it made me nostalgic for playing outside in the autumn.
I’m from Arizona and I love tragically hip and so bummed I didn’t get to see them in time ❤️Gordy
one of my favourite songs growing up
same here its in my top 5 songs of all time
I found out about this band because Geddy Lee said they were really good. And they are. Greetings from Chile
Que amor. Me apaixonei completamente pela serie e td mais q envolve ela. Os atores, as canções, o Canadá, absolutamente tudo rsrs
Que felizarda me sinto em assistir Anne em um ano d pandemia tão dificil como 2020. ❤
Concordo plenamente
Essa série "Anne With An E" me deu vida. Quando vi a série me deu vontade de viver de novo.
Gotta thank my Canadian buddy for suggesting I check TH out. Like most Americans, unfortunately I had never heard of them.
Steven Dunn three years passed at least You found them hopefully You still give them a listen once in a while one of the greats
The Tragically Hip ruled rock and never got the attention deserved given they did have the visual noise to market them. They were poets with instruments, especially when they rock. It's sweet they finally found fame via this heartfelt song. Now let's rock!
talking heads drowned them out ......sad
Umbrella academy brought me here again ! Now I have two shows I’ll miss
The best 'band' of all time. They were the pure definition of a band... these guys did everything together for 30 years, every aspect of the music and life. They are all wonderful guys who make wonderful music.
Hip. Rocks the park London I thing around 04 my dad couldn’t afford tickets but we listened from behind the fence and he put me up in a tree with some random guy and I watched the concert. Sounded so great. Every Canadian has hip story, but I’ll remember that forever. First time I heard a swear word in a song was fire works
Anne was ahead by a century
We all miss you so much 💖
Arguably the best Canadian band ever?
*the best
Nah but in top 5. Rush is still better
Anne whith an E!!!!!

Amo essa serie 🥰😔nada mais na minha vida faz sentido
