Those are some of the most iconic group covers ever for sure. I agree with #4 being a masterpiece. It broke a lot of cover rules and was probably considered very risky at the time. Somehow it worked and then stood the test of time. #1 is also a very cool cover of course. And Dr. Doom, my favorite "hero," taking serious damage and standing strong. good stuff. Doom worrying about his face seems out of character. He's not the self-conscious type, but the sort of guy to torture you by making you look at his scars. I don't like big group fights but they do make for some iconic covers and posters. This series was there in the beginning of the group fad. It predates DC's Crises by a few years. We will need a battle of "hero group" artists eventually. I didn't expect for Layton to play a role but he just might.
Yes! #4 caught my eye and sparked my imagination like nothing else had. I think those kind of covers (envelope pushing) are brilliant! I don't think Doom is self-conscious, but I DO think he is VAIN. His regal armor, his air of royalty, his jealousy of Reed. He CAN be petty at times. While he IS brilliant, his motivation is always self-serving. Doom always comes first. You'd think DC would have learned from Secret Wars. While Crisis has some big moments and amazing art, I just could NOT for the life of me follow the story. WAY too overwritten. Shooter had his faults, but he could write a story that appealed to kids and adults. Thanks for the comment!!!
@@thecomicsamurai So true. There are a lot of stories about Shooter's management style but for whatever faults he had, he did manage to make the Marvel Universe make sense and be exciting. Disney should hire the old guy. Thanks for your work.
I discovered your channel earlier today and I’m hooked! Working my way through the ranked comic cover list and would love to know your ranking of Dr. Strange covers!
Welcome! Dr. Strange, eh? What run? Strange Tales, Marvel Premiere, or one of his own Volumes? Oooh, now you got me thinking! Thanks for the comment!!!
@@thecomicsamurai Really like Strange Tales or Colans run when Strange got his own titles. Come to think of it I like all of Colans work. Thanks for the vids!
I really had no idea they reprinted them with facsimile editions. Seems like you can find some of the originals for about the same price. Very cool though!
A Dr Doom cover coverage seem a must now. 👍
You're right! Guess it's time to get to work. Thanks for the comment!!!
40 years later it's still brilliant today. 😀👍
They really captured lightening in a bottle. They tried again with the sequel and it just didn't work. For me anyway. At all.
