I love how the "off" is only a temporary off in Hondas and Acuras. It defaults back to auto next time you start the car. Makes it so you don't forget to turn them back on
Because they had to think like the person who thinks the least... sadly not everyone drives a new car with auto lights. They drive old cars with the headlight adjusted at the sky or ground. If it is new, I've seen Mercedes and Chevy trucks LED DRLs/headlights already burned out. The factory Halogens I had lasted 15 years, in the last 3 years I've replaced both headlights and driving LED bulbs 2x already, and I have a spare set in my closet for when those burn up.
It's actually even more than that, if after turning the lights off you shift either from Park to Drive or move the shifter in a manual, the lights will automatically come on.
I'm amazed you turn on your hazards when you approach sudden traffic to let people know behind you, I thought I only did that! I like your level of awareness, great job man, that took me off guard. I do it because I'm an Uber driver here in NYC and I learned to do that over 3 years of experience that some people just aren't paying attention and hazards are really good to "distract them from using phones". I'm impressed man, that was delightful to see someone is actually thinking about others on road as much as they are thinking about themselves not wanting to get rear ended of course, fantastic dude! I really liked that!!
Wait, is that not a standatd thing to do in US? Here in Europe its very widely used thing. Not mandatory nor thought in driver school but almost all drivers are using hazards to inform others about slow moving traffic on highways. It must be pretty dangerous not to use hazards in situation like for example this one in the video.
i live in mexico, and that’s the standard thing to do. everyone does it, it’s a generally expected road courtesy. also, in south africa (where i’m originally from) people flash their hazards after they pass you as a way to say thanks. road courtesy in the US is almost nonexistent
Completely agree about the wiper speed thing, I’m addicted to using the wipers only the bare minimum amount and my wife is always yelling at me to turn them up. Something in me just doesn’t want to ever wear them - even though they’re so cheap 😂
If you use Rain-x or similar your blades will last 3-4 times as long. Even if they're already worn you can get some more life out of them with the hydrophobic coating.
I wonder this exact thing. As a kid I thought everyone was so edgy for having their wipers so fast. I feel like at that point it starts obstructing visibility lol
@@nah3193 It actually caught me off guard how little the water is beading on his windshield. It looks like a sheet of water that you can't even see through. I wash my car at one of those self-serve bay washes and the "clear coat protectant" stuff is amazing for making water bead off glass.
4:22, I feel like so many people don’t understand how important this is. One of my buddies with a C6 Corvette drove through a puddle in third, full throttle, and spun out and totaled it.

I never put my wipers in the highest speed (I mean unless it's dangerous not to do so obviously) but not because I'm afraid of breaking them, mostly because I think it's incredibly relaxing to drive in the rain and the normal speed is much more relaxing than the highest speed. It's also why I pay some attention to wiper speed when I buy a car: Mercedes, Volvo, VW are my favorite "relaxing wipers"; BMW, Audi and such don't have a nice speed when wiping normally! I'm discovering with your video that Honda wipers are on point!

I remember a few months ago when it rained so hard that no matter how fast the wipers were going it wouldn't make a difference. That and looking in your mirror and only being able to see a massive patch of light instead of a car is always fun...
I can count the amount of times i've had my wipers on "fastwipe" on two hands, all of them in real stormy or snowy weather, also heard the same ol "You'll wear em out!". I am going to put em on the max in the rain today just because haha
Glad to see another car guy appreciate public transit! I love driving, but driving for one hour each way in rush hour traffic day in day out is soul-sucking no matter what. I miss living somewhere that had actual good transit that I can rely on, and was still able to find joy in driving when I want to. Kinda miss having those options.
I'm with you on the headlights thing. People just do not like to turn their headlights on in inclimate weather and I don't understand why. I always do. I love your rambling. Watching you drive makes me wanna drive my Mazda 3S. Even though it's automatic it's still a fun car to drive.

i finally snagged a red Si last month. had to fly up to Chicago and drive it back to Little Rock. Took me 6 months to find ine due to price gouging but so so so worth it.

I had an ex girlfriend who had an 8th gen civic. It had a cupholder to the left of the steering wheel above some of the controls. I still think it's the best located cupholder in any car I've ever been in and still occasionally talk about it to this day, 15yrs later.
Watching you say all the same things I'm thinking when enjoying the ratios in my 8th gen is very cathartic, both being a couple of the most fun fwd cars extant. I absolutely love driving mine in snow with the snow set, it's unreal the traction I can get on launch next to other 4wd vehicles.

My uncle always told me have your wipers on at the right speed depending on how much it's raining that way you don't wear out your wipers blades which makes a lot of sense.

The older I get the more I like Honda/acura. Last car that I owned was a 1990 Honda accord coupe ex (all original, non kidded out) which I LOVED and now I Own a 2006 acura RL. I like it a lot though, very safe with awd and 300hp, but there’s just something about a lightweight SIMPLE Honda from the 90s, and this new civic really reminds me of how Honda used to be or how they should be (which now they nailed)
I usually manually press the wiper stalk every time I need them unless it's a torrential downpour, then I'll use the slowest automatic speed I can and still see
With the wiper conversation, for some reason, I put my wipers on at a certain speed. And when someone drives by me with a slower wiper speed setting, I go “oh, I guess I don’t need to have my wipers going that fast” and slow down my wipers. Idk I’m weird like that😂
Watching your videos has me so excited for the (Canadian) 2024 Si I’ll be picking up next month. Such an ideal car for myself, except I wish it came in a hatchback. But comparing its features to the Civic Hatchback with 6MT, the choice was clear as day. Si is the choice for me.
It's interesting how automatic headlights have been the norm for years yet most don't turn on with the wipers with something like a simple relay. With how many people go full blast wipers at the slightest drizzle and don't know where their headlight switch is, this should be a standard lol.
I completely forgot about it until I read your comment, but I had a BMW that would turn on the headlights if the auto wipers were on and did at least three wipes in a set period of time. I’ve never had another car do that, unfortunately.
I’ve never been a huge fan of auto lights just because I think that’s how people end up driving at night without lights on, they think it’s in auto and see the gauges lit up and don’t realize lights are off. You wouldn’t make that mistake in a car from the mid 2000s or older where all your gauges and buttons were simple analog with a backlight. Now that every car comes with AA/ Apple CarPlay maybe Siri/Google assistant could pop up a notification when you’re driving in the rain saying “hey it’s illegal to drive in the rain without lights on, you should turn yours on” a lot of people just aren’t aware.
As soon as my parents think they can see good enough when the wipers are in the fastest position, they put it back to the low setting as soon a possible. My dad is the person who always keeps the wipers on the low position. Not intermitten, not high, just low
You sound like me when I drive. I was rear ended by a drunk driver in high school in my first prelude. Bought another Prelude and then rear ended by a truck in college. Then rear ended again in a Civic I owned years later. I have a tendency to watch my rear view mirrors now but I really try to fight it. I’m constantly vigilant, watching conditions, other drivers, and thinking about how to drive the safest in each scenario

I hate having my wipers on fast, it just feels stressful! However, with how upright the windshield in the Bronco is, the rain doesn’t bead off as well and I need them up higher.
“Why I Love Driving In The Rain” would be an amusing title for a video on a Porsche 911 or a Lamborghini Diablo. I don’t think the Civic is beautiful, but it’s an excellent drivers car. Honda’s have long been great drivers cars, especially the standard transmissions which are usually close to perfect. I had a 1978 Honda Civic 2 -door hatchback, and it was an absolutely fantastic car to drive, especially on the winding and hilly country of roads in the northwest area of Connecticut I lived in.
Great video! I enjoy driving in light rain during daylight hours and not at night where the road turns into a mirror and disappears, also that was some aggressive acceleration for wet conditions lol I guess if you're going for the slides & spins then fair game. I avoid putting wipers on the fastest settings unless I'm in a deluge on the interstate within city limits where there tends to be a lot of pooling and a lot of water being splashed up from the road.
also a nice feature of newer hondas, if wipers are still on when car is turned off, it will return home before stopping the wipers so you dont get that awkward mid-way wipe stop. also imo i never use the fastest wiper setting because its more distracting than helpful as i feel like i see the wiper more than i see stuff through the windshield, and the setting below the fastest setting is always sufficient. if your windshield is getting completely covered in milliseconds than i could see using the fastest setting. im sure theyre designed to not break at the fastest speed but i also feel that they will wear out much faster if theyre used that way longer/more often
I've noticed a shocking amount of people that drive AT NIGHT with their lights off. This started when DRLs and lighted instrument clusters became the norm. I try to let them know if we're at a stop light but most look at me like I'm a crazy person.
Regarding the wiper speed. The faster the tempo will increase your heart rate thus causing anxiety and a sense of nervousness. We finally got a little rain in s. Cal. and the rain sensing wipers on the new Civic worked perfectly.
I try to use the wipers on the lowest speed as I can and having rain x helps a lot! It also can possibly scratch your windshield overtime so I only use them when it's downpouring and not to clean my windows. The previous owners had bad wipers or ran them dry on the windshield and it's all marked up. So I'll need to get a new windshield since I can't see in direct sunlight
The owner's manual in my dad's `76 BMW 2002 specifically said to limit the amount of time running the wipers on high speed because they will break! And T Commuter Rail!
9:35 No, no, no! That Tesla was actually okay: you have to be either directly behind it or at least one lane next to it in order to see those tail lights. Modern manufacturers do that on purpose. They make the angle of light relatively narrow, so that you won't be distracted if such a Tesla, or other modern vehicle, drives pretty much aside from you. Modern stop lights have even narrower angle. You have to be *directly* behind the decelerating vehicle in order to see the full blast of its stop lights. If you're in the next lane, you'll see just minor increase of brightness.
I've never needed to wack the wipers up to full speed. My ceramic coated windshield beads water insanely well so the wipers just have to encourage it off the sides rather than push away vast quantities of rain

I like this judgy persona, haha. I learned to drive in Tennessee, where state code requires the use of headlights when there's enough rain to necessitate the constant use of windshield wipers. I've continued that practice to this day as common sense. And I never turn my wipers to the fastest setting unless I really need it -- The constant motion of the wipers seems to impede visibility more than the rain itself.
Great vid man, I love to drive in the rain as well but there is barely any rain in Califronia. I you love the Civic so much, you should try an Accord 2.0t, both the 10 speed AT and 6 speed MT are amazing.
I had 2 occasions recently that my wipers on high speed just came loose and fell off from the arms. The plastic mounts were not snug enough and the wiper rotated and fell off. Not a good situation cause I had to urgently pull over, couldn't see/drive anymore. it scratched my windshield, and one time the wiper flew away on the highway. Not to mention having to fiddle to put it back in the rain on side of highway. Now I just make sure they are not mounted loose and there is no play.
About the wiper adjustment, my CL9 Acura TSX and my parents' YD2 Acura MDX are opposites. The wider part of the triangle means more time in-between wiping for the TSX.
I also keep my wipers on the slowest possible setting that is safe for the amount of rain. Luckily I don't have to think about it very much since im in LA but whenever it does rain I hate to have the wipers on too fast.
So I crashed when I was younger in the rain and feel like I’ve never fully recovered my rain driving ability due to fear, maybe a video on tips for driving in the rain would be nice!
Several years ago I took an advanced driving course. Specifically to learn how to handle a car in wet weather. They flood the track with water trucks and teach you how to handle most situations. That does not make me an expert driver, I do have more confidence in the rain. Back then it was only a couple of hundred dollars. But well worth it.
I was driving a ram 1500 in a severe rainstorm so I need my wipers in the fastest setting, after about 5 minutes the rubber part started to fly off. I had to pull over just to fix it!

Buy some CrossClimate2s. Those tires have incredible wet traction and don’t hydroplane

I recommend putting some rainx on your windshield! Rain just beads off and when driving at speed you virtually don’t even need to use your wipers
As soon as my parents think they can see good enough when the wipers are in the fastest position, they put it back to the low setting as soon a possible. My dad is the person who always keeps the wipers on the low position. Not intermitten, not high, just low

A nice tip I found out is applying a little wax or some other hydrophobic product to your windshield. It really helps with visibility in the rain.

Making yourself visible is paramount when driving in inclement weather! Wish I had rear fog lights, I would use them all the time.
You sound like me when I drive. I was rear ended by a drunk driver in high school in my first prelude. Bought another Prelude and then rear ended by a truck in college. Then rear ended again in a Civic I owned years later.
I have a tendency to watch my rear view mirrors now but I really try to fight it. I’m constantly vigilant, watching conditions, other drivers, and thinking about how to drive the safest in each scenario
I put my wipers in the fastest intermittent setting in my si. They adjust themselves based on your speed when you do that!
Normally I wouldn't look forward to the rain we're having this evening, but you have given me a bit of perspective. Maybe I'll go out. It's Friday after all, and driving in the rain seems relaxing after a long work week.
Granted, I've got no FWD car - RWD IS 350 here, but hey, rain is pretty much the only time I get wheelspin, so that's something. 🤣
I hate having my wipers on fast, it just feels stressful! However, with how upright the windshield in the Bronco is, the rain doesn’t bead off as well and I need them up higher.

I don’t think the Civic is beautiful, but it’s an excellent drivers car. Honda’s have long been great drivers cars, especially the standard transmissions which are usually close to perfect. I had a 1978 Honda Civic 2 -door hatchback, and it was an absolutely fantastic car to drive, especially on the winding and hilly country of roads in the northwest area of Connecticut I lived in.

Great video! I enjoy driving in light rain during daylight hours and not at night where the road turns into a mirror and disappears, also that was some aggressive acceleration for wet conditions lol I guess if you're going for the slides & spins then fair game. I avoid putting wipers on the fastest settings unless I'm in a deluge on the interstate within city limits where there tends to be a lot of pooling and a lot of water being splashed up from the road.
also a nice feature of newer hondas, if wipers are still on when car is turned off, it will return home before stopping the wipers so you dont get that awkward mid-way wipe stop. also imo i never use the fastest wiper setting because its more distracting than helpful as i feel like i see the wiper more than i see stuff through the windshield, and the setting below the fastest setting is always sufficient. if your windshield is getting completely covered in milliseconds than i could see using the fastest setting. im sure theyre designed to not break at the fastest speed but i also feel that they will wear out much faster if theyre used that way longer/more often
I've noticed a shocking amount of people that drive AT NIGHT with their lights off. This started when DRLs and lighted instrument clusters became the norm. I try to let them know if we're at a stop light but most look at me like I'm a crazy person.
Hahaha....My dad said the same thing about the wiper speed....and he was correct our '94 Astro Van went through 3 wiper motors before 100K Miles.

Regarding the wiper speed. The faster the tempo will increase your heart rate thus causing anxiety and a sense of nervousness. We finally got a little rain in s. Cal. and the rain sensing wipers on the new Civic worked perfectly.

I try to use the wipers on the lowest speed as I can and having rain x helps a lot! It also can possibly scratch your windshield overtime so I only use them when it's downpouring and not to clean my windows. The previous owners had bad wipers or ran them dry on the windshield and it's all marked up. So I'll need to get a new windshield since I can't see in direct sunlight
The owner's manual in my dad's `76 BMW 2002 specifically said to limit the amount of time running the wipers on high speed because they will break! And T Commuter Rail!
9:35 No, no, no! That Tesla was actually okay: you have to be either directly behind it or at least one lane next to it in order to see those tail lights. Modern manufacturers do that on purpose. They make the angle of light relatively narrow, so that you won't be distracted if such a Tesla, or other modern vehicle, drives pretty much aside from you.
Modern stop lights have even narrower angle. You have to be *directly* behind the decelerating vehicle in order to see the full blast of its stop lights. If you're in the next lane, you'll see just minor increase of brightness.
I've never needed to wack the wipers up to full speed. My ceramic coated windshield beads water insanely well so the wipers just have to encourage it off the sides rather than push away vast quantities of rain

I have a 2004 Audi and it has rear red fog light, so it's not just the old cars that have them.

@@TedwardDrives, you did say "German cars from the 90s" :) Just checked, Audi A4 B9 also has rear fog light, it's the current generation (since 2015). Maybe the U. S. spec cars don't have it?
I like this judgy persona, haha. I learned to drive in Tennessee, where state code requires the use of headlights when there's enough rain to necessitate the constant use of windshield wipers. I've continued that practice to this day as common sense. And I never turn my wipers to the fastest setting unless I really need it -- The constant motion of the wipers seems to impede visibility more than the rain itself.

Great vid man, I love to drive in the rain as well but there is barely any rain in Califronia. I you love the Civic so much, you should try an Accord 2.0t, both the 10 speed AT and 6 speed MT are amazing.
I had 2 occasions recently that my wipers on high speed just came loose and fell off from the arms. The plastic mounts were not snug enough and the wiper rotated and fell off. Not a good situation cause I had to urgently pull over, couldn't see/drive anymore. it scratched my windshield, and one time the wiper flew away on the highway. Not to mention having to fiddle to put it back in the rain on side of highway. Now I just make sure they are not mounted loose and there is no play.
About the wiper adjustment, my CL9 Acura TSX and my parents' YD2 Acura MDX are opposites. The wider part of the triangle means more time in-between wiping for the TSX.

I also keep my wipers on the slowest possible setting that is safe for the amount of rain. Luckily I don't have to think about it very much since im in LA but whenever it does rain I hate to have the wipers on too fast.

So I crashed when I was younger in the rain and feel like I’ve never fully recovered my rain driving ability due to fear, maybe a video on tips for driving in the rain would be nice!
Several years ago I took an advanced driving course. Specifically to learn how to handle a car in wet weather. They flood the track with water trucks and teach you how to handle most situations. That does not make me an expert driver, I do have more confidence in the rain. Back then it was only a couple of hundred dollars. But well worth it.
Just take it easy. You don't need to be an expert. Gentle acceleration. Coast earlier instead of braking later.
Yeah you shouldn't drive like he did in the video tbh.. no matter how pro of a driver you think you are wet weather is still unpredictable
I was driving a ram 1500 in a severe rainstorm so I need my wipers in the fastest setting, after about 5 minutes the rubber part started to fly off. I had to pull over just to fix it!

It is the law in mass if your wipers are on your headlights must be on, not just parking lights or daytime running lights but head lights.
