Medical school is an absolute grind and sucks more often than not, but whenever I'm feeling sorry for myself, I remember how lucky I was to have even gotten in.
For those currently struggling during the application process, here is some personal insight. My cousin was rejected from every med school he applied to during the first application cycle. He then took a gap year and worked full time. During the second application cycle, he sent in applications again and was accepted into medical school. He is now one of the best pediatric pulmonologists in the country. Also, two years ago, I applied to Clinical Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) programs. I did not receive an acceptance offer until three weeks before I graduated from college. I am now almost halfway done with my AuD program. Sometimes the future has a unique way of working itself out even if you have to persist through various obstacles.
I personally found that the grind of getting into medical school was more stressful than medical school. At least the preclinical years of medical school. I do not like my success or failure depending on other people’s opinion on me. Also, 3:24 got a chuckle out of me

If you are rejected then just go to medical school in different countries lol. It would be the best case scenario to go to med school in your home country, but worst case scenario is giving up on being a doctor just because you couldnt get in a medical school in a specific country. If you want a lot of dollar then usa is the way to go, but if you just wanna be a DOCTOR, then any country that is willing to let you study and do specialization afterward is a good idea. So the question you have to ask is do you want alot of money or treat patient? It would be the best case scenario to choose both, but if your option is limited to choosing only one then you got to make the call. If your main focus is money then choose other job that is more obtainable and that also pays well. If your main priority is to treat patient then become a doctor in another country. And if you are a highly talented individual who want to make lot of money and also treat patient, then become a doctor in canada or usa.
It is a convoluted process with so many variables ranging from DEI to extracurricular activities! There is almost a penalty for having a loving and stable home environment, which makes for a lack of personal drama and circumstance in many essays.
It is beyond messed up! In my country, you just take the entrance exam. The sum of the entrance exam score and your high school GPA determines if you are in or not. No extracurriculars, no interviews, no Bullsh*t!
If you have the ambition go to one of the several reputable Caribbean schools . Step scores and residency depends largely on your effort . I matched into FM , and some of my cohort went to Peds , Surgery , anesthesia etc . Totally doable .
The fact that so many factors (out of which a few of them do not directly depend on the applicant) play a hand in the medical school application is kinda sickening. I am not sure about the rest of Europe, but in the Balkans, you just take the entrance exam and the sum of your high school GPA and the exam results determine if you are in or not. That's IT! Why in the seven hells there have to be INTERVIEWS? Who in the hell came up with that idea? Extracurricular activities? Letters of recommendation? Does it mean that someone has to let go of regular life just to get into medical school? I believe that the US system of Medical school admissions (not to mentio the medical schools themselves) is severely messed up! I am not surprised why is there a severe shortage of doctors in general. Good luck increasing numbers with so many hoops!
Nothing happens. You're a disappointment to your parents anyway and newsflash: being a doctor isn't even a cool job. Money is overrated. Just study something else. It doesnt really matter.

I am Egyptian, and I have the same dream as you. However, I am afraid that after we get accepted into undergraduate programs, we might get rejected from medical school. In that case, we will have to return to our countries after failing.
I believe people can always improve. However, when you look at the demographics of entering cohorts year after year, there are clear trends pointing to affirmative action policies (in addition to women always being favoured almost 2:1 compared to men, across the majority of schools) operating behind the scenes. These are known statistics. Especially now, there are more external rather than internal factors that will determine whether one receives an offer to medical school. I suspect that in many cases, a perceived poor performance on the interview is not due to any specific interpersonal issues but rather the candidate's reluctance to disclose a sob story. If you don't disclose a sob story, then you are at a disadvantage compared to people who did disclose one (or disclosed a false one). All this to say, everyone has their battles, and in the end the admissions committee, based on their own biases and opinions, gets to decide what weight should be assigned to one candidate who decided to include a sob story vs. another candidate who decided to focus on academic or professional qualifications they deem relevant to the practice of medicine (rather than their own adversity, which the candidate may not feel comfortable disclosing).
Greater number of female matriculants is the consequence of more women applying than men, not explicit preference for female applicants. I do agree with your point about the trauma porn being fetishized in admission process, though.
@@firdavskurbanov6019 In Canada, in terms of percentage, 45% and 55% of applications are from males and females respectively. In admissions, the proportions diverge to about 2:1 female:male. How do you explain the consistent 10% shift?
and even in years where the proportion change from application to admission was less, there was always an increase in the percentage of females admitted compared to the percentage of applications received from females. This is never observed for males.
