I just love how classy Gugu is. She's very articulate and passionate about everything she does. In my opinion, she was a perfect cast for the role of Belle and she's now one of my favorite actresses. If you haven't seen her in Beyond the Lights, check it out. As for Sam Reid, he's really grown on me since I first saw him in this. He's handsome, but not in the way you'd usually imagine. He just seems like a genuinely sweet guy and he's also a great actor. I like him in The Astronaut Wives Club. Love them both and adore this movie!

It is the way he looks at her that has a lot of people commenting that they are a couple. I wish a man looked at me the way Sam looks at GuGu. I have to share my opinions about this interview and what I see. I think the way Sam looks at GUGu to be affectionate. At 6:28 - 6:31 notice that he puts his hand on her, or on the chair. He moved it when he realizes the reporters can see him. At 7:11 they have noticed the way he looks at her and ask if they are a couple. The way he looks at GuGu has made a lot of people comment on how close are they. The reporters noticed it too, so we who see the attraction he shows for her when we view this video are not imagining it.

    • @simplejonesl8754
      @simplejonesl8754 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

La Louloune Yes, I think you are right. I thought that I was imagining their "closeness" until these reporters commented about it. They are, extremely, comfortable with each other--and it is the way he looks at her that makes people wonder about their relationship, Other people who are commenting about this interview--see it too. Gugu has stated that she will not comment on her personal life when she is being interviewed. She has a right to her privacy, so I hope the best for them.

    • @Trans4ma1
      @Trans4ma1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Unfortunately, this usually happens in a lot of interviews. One person gets over-excited and keeps talking not realizing they have talked 70% of the time and their colleague(s) only 30%. I don’t take it necessarily is a bad thing, but perhaps a reflection of one of them being introverted and the other extroverted. I think what’s worse is when you have dead silence because both actors won’t speak at all or neither of them are animated enough. Also keep in mind she is the main character in the film so the questions were also tailored towards her thoughts at the forefront as well.

I see no "GAY" in Sam--He and GuGu are very playful with each other. You might want him to be gay David, but I see no Gay in him. Some people say things like that because he is a white man who is interested (maybe) in a woman of color; or maybe you are interested in him and want him to be????

He seemed much more macho in his role in the movie as opposed to this interview.

David Jackson David, I want you to observe the looks he gives her. David don't you think that the reporters and so many of the people who watched this are wondering if they are a couple because at 7:11 and the way he places his hand on her or the chair--shows intimacy? There are pictures of them (on other sites that gives away their feelings for each other) that if you saw them, you would realize that they are a couple--off screen. I saw GuGu doing an interview for her new movie, and she said no comment--when asked if she was dating anyone. I read that she broke off an engagement--last year--and never named the actor she was engaged to. Since then the pictures of them together (Sam and GuGu) -are very revealing. I would point them out to you, but GuGu is determined to keep her private life--private
This is why Sam seems off, he is trying not to give their relationship--away (in my opinion). He is being interviewed, and is not at ease. Some people are judging GuGu to be dominating this conversation, but she is the star of the picture, and they are asking her the most questions, so he isn't being so macho here, because she is the one who they want to talk to. He is also--private about his private life. So please stop judging. I have seen the photos that would prove to all that they seem to be a couple in their private life, and they deserve their privacy. You were the first person to make a statement like that about him, so I am not judging you--but maybe you find him attractive and see what you want? I'm just saying!

No one is invading your thoughts you're chosing a public forum to express an opinion and if someone disagrees with you then you have to be adult enough to deal with it. If you can't handle someone challenging what you're saying then keep your opinions to yourself. Saying that people won't fight anymore if the world were mixed race is naive and stupid. Human beings will always find something to fight about its sad and fustrating but that is the way it will always be and you need accept that fact.

Forget it ladies!. Today, much to my surprise, I discovered that Sam Reid is gay (and I took the time to verify that with several different sources). Reid is a talented young actor, but the fact that in his personal life he is only interested in male love interests made him a bad choice for a Jane-Austin-type period film, since this type of film would primarily appeal to women and women are not appealing to him.
The question is, why were they willing to take a silly risk like that by cast a gay man in the role of Belle's love interest. The film already had a predictable uphill climb since the film is not a Hollywood production and the lead actress and the female director, though quite talented, are not Americans either.
The script and the story it is based upon are both compelling, but that was not enough to overcome a very bad casting decision. To no ones surprise, this film has done very poorly at the box office.

Hello. Although I would love to go into the gay/straight politics of the cinematic world, tell you how prejudice your comment was, and give examples of the many gay men who play straight characters, neither one of us has the time for that. Instead, I will tell you exactly why he was cast as John Davinier. In fact, you said it yourself. "Much to my surprise, I discovered that Sam Reid is gay." There it is! You answered your own question. These producers and casting directors don't care who the "heartthrob" is attracted to in real life. They don't care if he'd rather be confessing his love for a man instead of a woman. They don't care! Here's what they care about: is he believable? Does he play the character well, and can audiences believe him? The answer was yes. That's why you were surprised to see that he was gay, and that's why he was cast. This isn't The Bachelor. Women aren't watching these films to get the guy. We're watching these films for the fantasy aspect of romance. The actor needs to PLAY the perfect guy, but not actually BE the perfect guy behind closed doors. Sure, finding out that our heartthrob is gay may skew the fantasy a bit, but women fantasize about straight actors playing straight characters everyday, and what good does that do us? It's not like we're going to end up with these guys. Sam Reid was not only a talented actor who portrayed the character with grace and conviction, he also made us romance-nuts melt, and that's all we needed. And for your information, Belle received an 83% on the ever so hard-to-please Rotten Tomatoes. That doesn't sound like a movie that did poorly at the box office. That sounds like a movie that has been well-received, and respected

Reva Nelson Actually, he is gay. Box office success isn't about being nice. I have no reason to believe that he is not a nice person, and I certainly never said that he isn't. However, there are thousands of talented young actors, and many of them could have played the character John Davinier equally well. What I did say is that Sam Reid was the wrong casting choice for that particular role.

Delilah Smith Since there are many elements upon which my concluding statements are based and those elements each required one or more paragraphs, I have decided to offer my concluding statements first.
      CONCLUDING STATEMENTS:
While it is nice to know that "romance-nuts" like yourself who have seen the film enjoyed it, that is hardly the point. Your statement would be analogous to an advertising agency telling its client, "Well, the viewers who were willing to watch your company's ad really enjoyed it." Ad agencies and marketing departments care about the eyeball count, not about the fan factor.
My initial comment addressed this question: If black producers and directors and actors must always operate with a given set of seemingly insurmountable "handicaps" over which they have little or no control, why would a production company deliberately introduce a potential "handicap" that is completely unnecessary? To be sure, success requires a certain amount of risk-taking, but there are smart risks and there are dumb risks and there are also SEEMINGLY dumb risks. So, I had to ask myself this question. What was the REAL point of taking that risk? Was this film portrayal of Dido Elizabeth Belle merely a convenient vehicle to promote the case that a homosexual male actor is just as capable as a heterosexual male actor of being successfully cast in a role where he portrays the love interest of the leading lady without negatively affecting the film's box office earnings? The more cynical question might be, what was the financial investor's REAL intent? Since the film had little chance of being a box-office success anyway, was the financial investor really only interested in helping to promote his agenda, namely the careers of gay actors?
I am aware of Rotten Tomatoes review. Perhaps I should point out that while film critics may influence the initial reception of a film, there is no direct correlation between critical reviews and the box-office success or failure of a film -- which brings me to the truly interesting part of this discussion.
I took a look at Belle's box-office earnings and the earnings of a few other films released in 2013. Here is what I discovered.
      Belle's available stats:
      Total Lifetime Grosses
      Domestic:
      $10,726,630
      100.0%
      + Foreign:
      n/a
      0.0%
      = Worldwide:
      $10,726,630
      12 Years a Slave's available stats:
      Total Lifetime Grosses
      Domestic:
      $56,671,993
      30.2%
      + Foreign:
      $131,061,209
      69.8%
      = Worldwide:
      $187,733,202
The top two 2013 releases, Frozen and Iron Man 3, both grossed over $1.2 billion, making them the fifth and sixth highest-grossing films of all time. Incidentally, these were far from low-budget films.
      Then, I took a look at Belle's and 12 Years a Slave's production budgets.
      Belle's production budget = N/A
      12 Years a Slave's production budget = $20 million (low-budget film)
Based upon this data, it appears that while neither Belle nor 12 Years a Slave grossed anywhere near the highest earning films released in 2013, 12 Years a Slave did make a significant profit. So, the question is (a) what was Belle's production budget, and (b) how likely is it that, whatever that budget was, the film would have made any profit at all?
      -- END --
      Hello to you as well.
Gay/straight politics? Prejudice? Ummm, for the sake of moving some of your basic assumptions off the table, I should probably point out that films are not produced for the cinematic world and that you do not know what my sexual orientation is nor do you know what my basic values are. Therefore, you would most certainly have been on unstable ground broaching those topics with me.
You wrote, "These producers and casting directors don't care who the "heartthrob" is attracted to in real life" since when? Perhaps you mean that you think they should not care, or that you wish they did not care. The reality is -- whether you like it or not -- a man who is known to be a homosexual male is not going to be the heartthrob of heterosexual females. There is no denying that. That fact, in and of itself, makes it impossible for him to be a potential box office draw for any female, based upon his sexual appeal.
I said, ". . . much to my surprise . . ." I did not say that the rest of the world is surprised. In point of fact, what led me to go searching for information about Sam Reid were comments about Reid made by different individual. Two of those comments are on these Belle trailers. I don't follow the lives of actors, so those individuals' comments came as news to me, which I could scarcely believe given that the film was already considered by many to be a highly risky venture.
A potential audience's suspension of disbelief is not limitless, just as a casting directors job is not without obligations to the producers and investors as well as to the cast as a whole. If it were, casting directors would be free to regularly cast accomplished septegenarian and octogenarian heterosexual male actors as the love interests of young heterosexual female character without risk or responsibility. I was surprised to learn that Reid is gay because such a choice clearly suggested that, in this case, ideology and "gay/straight politics" trumped common sense and the ability to widely disseminate what some of us view as a truly worthwhile, well-made film that is based upon little-known historical events.
If, should such a risk have been taken, is a fair question to ask when the risk is casting a black actor, even when that actor is a talented, well-known actor who has an established record of box-office appeal, then why should a little-known white homosexual actor with no established record of box-office appeal be exempt from a similar type of scrutiny?
Below is a copy of an email chain between Sony studio execs that suggests a reluctance to cast Danzel Washington in big films because he is black.
The email chain was obtained by RadarOnline.com and is dated after the September release of Washington’s latest film, The Equalizer,
In it, a producer suggests that Sony should avoid casting black actors if it wants those films to appeal to international audiences. The email was sent from the producer to Sony Chairman, Michael Lynton.
“No, I am not saying The Equalizer should not have been made or that African American actors should not have been used (I personally think Denzel is the best actor of his generation),” the producer wrote.
“I believe that the international motion picture audience is racist - in general pictures with an African American lead don’t play well overseas. But Sony sometimes seems to disregard that a picture must work well internationally to both maximize returns and reduce risk, especially pics with decent size budgets.”
“He’s reliable at the domestic [box office], safe, but has not had a huge success in years. I believe whenever possible the non event pictures, extra ‘bets’ should have a large inherent upside and be made for the right price. Here there isn’t a large inherent upside.”
For the record, The Equalizer grossed a domestic total of $101.8 million dollars and a worldwide total of $191 million."
In reality, this is typical of the type of conversation that black actors are subjected to throughout their careers. By contrast, the gay community, in particular, is well-funded and highly skilled at manipulating and drowning out that type of conversation, so I am going to press the reset button on that conversation and circumvent those tactics.
Danzel Washington was born black. That has never been a factor over which he could exert any control. We could argue all day long about whether or not Sam Reid was born homosexual, but I am not interested in having that manipulative, rhetorical conversation. The fact remains that being gay is a factor over which he has always had the ability to exert control. In other words, there is absolutely no scientific data that suggests that all humans are not wired from birth with the ability to be homosexual. However, there is an enormous amount of empirical data that clearly suggests that all humans are wired with that potential. Some individuals choose to, and, in fact, are encouraged to, activate those wires at an early age. I am most certainly not interested in having a conversation about whether or not those wires should be activated, since answers to questions of that nature would inevitably be based upon personal values. Suffice to say, white privilege has the ability to grant unlimited freedom to group members to do as they wish with little or no adversity. Ultimately, that may be the way to go, but I see no reason to be particularly sympathetic to those individuals at the further expense of far less fortunate individuals.

Heidi733 Hello. I did have a rather lengthy comment, but I decided against it. Instead, I'll cut it short. Number one, I don't think that anyone should be discriminated against in the casting category unless it's absolutely imperative for them to be visually correct (for example, no white man could play MLK). With that being said, I don't understand the huge Denzel Washington explanation. As an African American, I must say, this discussion didn't require that. I get what you're saying, but it was a lack of compartmentalization on your part. Heterosexual women don't find homosexual men attractive? One name: Matt Bomer. Women still think he's sexy, and even wanted him to play Christian Grey AFTER they knew he was gay. Also, if it's such a risk to cast gay men as straight characters, why do casting directors do it so often? Matt Bomer. Neil Patrick Harris. Rupert Everett. Jonathan Bennett. Wentworth Miller. The list is endless, and that's just for homosexual men. So, no. They don't care. If they did, they wouldn't have cast Harris as the lady killer Barney. And lets not forget the straight people that play gay roles. Was it bad that Sean Penn played Harvey Milk, or that Ellen Page played Juno? The film industry is all smoke and mirrors.
