    // SUMMARY //
    Wondering what to do in Lauterbrunnen Valley? Want to taste local Swiss food while on vacation in Switzerland? Come along on our DIY Swiss Food Tour!
    Begin this DIY Swiss Food Tour with a full appetite in Interlaken, Switzerland
    STOP 1: Bread from Bäckerei-Konditorei Steininger
    Nothing is better than bread that's crusty on the outside and soft on the inside! This place also happens to be one of our favorite Swiss bakeries in Interlaken.
    STOP 2: Cheese from a Farm Fridge
    You must taste Swiss cheese while in Switzerland! What better place to buy it than on a dairy farm!
    STOP 3: Jam from another Farm Fridge
    This farm has cows, chickens, and ducks - but there must be a garden patch somewhere because their farm stand sells jam too!
    STOP 4: Rugenbräu Brewery (with whiskey and gin too!)
    Beer straight from the Bernese Oberland! You can taste Rugenbräu Swiss beer in most local restaurants, but the brewery gives you a behind the scenes tour of its production. Plus you can taste their Swiss whiskey and gin too!
    BONUS STOP: Wander the Unspunnen Castle ruins
    Although it's just crumbling stones, there is an interesting history to Unspunnen Castle, which you can read on the signs posted here (also written in English). Take the time to hike to the top and see the mysterious dungeon/well/giant hole!
    PICNIC: Have a picnic with an amazing view of the Jungfrau!
    Don't know what to do in Interlaken, Switzerland? Come here for a picnic! In our opinion, this is the best view of the Jungfrau and Jungfraujoch!
    TRAIN/BUS: Ride the train to Lauterbrunnen Valley, and then catch bus 141 to Stechelberg, Sandbach
    Swiss trains are impressive. And the Swiss transportation system is clean, timely, and convenient. You'll take a train and bus to Lauterbrunnen Valley from Wilderswil to continue our DIY Swiss Food Tour.
    STOP 5: Milk from a Farm Vending Machine (2024 UPDATE: This has now been moved to Wilderswil!)
    You guys, fresh Swiss milk from a Swiss cow, chilled, and served in a vending machine. What's better than that?!
    STOP 6: Sirop from another Farm Vending Machine (mixed with Swiss water to make juice!)
    Want a good laugh? Don't skip this part! We made a huge mistake here! But if you're wondering where to eat in Lauterbrunnen Valley, these vending machines are fun and are filled with different snacks!
    STOP 7: Rahmtäfeli from a Farm-Side Stand
    This sweet treat is made from Swiss milk and lots of sugar. But if you want to taste local Swiss food, you need to try these!
    NOT INCLUDED:
    We discovered Wilderswil wine. So sweet, fruity and refreshing!
    Swiss chocolate! That's right, there was NO Swiss chocolate in these vending machines. Be right back...heading to the grocery store to snag some ;)
    Swiss cheese fondue! I guess it's obviously why this wasn't in a vending machine. Don't worry, we will be going to a restaurant for this typical Swiss meal ASAP!

    As an American I am always amazed at the quality of Swiss life. From the food, family life, transportation, construction and their respect for honesty. Love the farmer's Kiosks while hiking!

      We agree - the Swiss have such a high quality of life in so many ways! It is neat that these farm stands thrive on the honors system and everyone respects that!

      There are also fields with strawberries or flowers. You pick them yourself and then pay in a box. You find that all over the country. I buy my eggs, milk and veggies just at unattended farm shops for the freshness and quality. As for the jams "Zwetschgen" are prunes and "Quitten Gelee" is quince jelly.

    Yes, the "sirup" is to be diluted with water. About 1 tbsp for 1 glass of water. This syrup is a hit with kids as they get a sweet drink but not a cola 😉 Like your concept of DIY food tour, something different yet familiar, and could be very helpful for those who'd be here for the first time. All the best to your travels & you 2 take care!

    Love how much you're loving the experience! So glad you like the country. Thank you for the lovely and enthusiastic video.
    The only thing that's puzzling to me: why would anyone spend an entire month in Interlaken, when you could spend a week there, a week in Appenzell, a week in the Ticino and another week in Engadina and the Swiss national park?? You have no idea what you're missing, and each of these regions is completey different from the Interlaken landscape.
    I hope for your sake you find an opportunity to see those gorgeous regions as well!

      Thanks for watching and for asking a few questions!
      We have actually spent more than 2 years traveling Europe and have been to Switzerland on 8 different occasions...guess you could say that we just can’t get enough of your beautiful country!😍
      So far we have visited 19 of the Swiss cantons, including Appenzell (Jana wants to go back there again) and Ticino. And after years of travel, it’s more sustainable for us to spend longer periods (like a month) in each place rather than move to a new location every week. 💻Plus we both work part-time so we try to maintain a live-cation balance.
      However we just started filming TH-cam videos this summer, so unfortunately our channel is missing out on our previous years of travel! But there are plenty more videos to come in the future 😊

    If you haven't already, you should try bread made from spelt/ dinkelbrot when in a swiss bakery. Spelt is a type of ancient wheat which is quite common here 🤔. It digests well and has less gluten than regular wheat flour. I love ❤ Dinkel. And that Rahmtaffeli you tried is swiss fudge made with cream. A bit less creamy than American fudge.

    Yes, raw milk is very nice and hard to get in our days. I am glad you liked it. Most Americans we offered it are groused because its totally unprocessed. Its milk just out of the cow how it was meant to be.

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was so delicious! But we know that many Americans don’t have strong enough stomach bacteria for it and unfortunately get sick because it isn’t processed. We try to eat all organic and natural, so this is an amazing way to do that! Do you buy your raw milk from a local farmer?

    A lot of farms have automated fridges where you select what you want by pushing the relevant button, like A3 for example and you put your money in and the product can be taken out. Will be in the Lauterbrunnen Valley in just 55 days! (Switzerland is opening up to vaccinated Americans on June 28.) While this will be my 4th trip to this area (also one of my favorites in Switzerland) I've NEVER seen the milk vending machines. I was going to ask where you found them and then saw you've mapped it out. Thanks so much! Do go to Murren and take the beautiful walk to Gimmelwald if you haven't already. @@AplinsintheAlps Sirup is very popular in Europe, especially for kids. It gives them a sweet and fruity drink without all the sugar you can find in sodas.
      When you said that the drink was "very sweet" but also kind of very dense, I asked myself "Wait. Is it sirup ? She's not drinking sirup from the bottle, is she ?"
      My family and I get our milk from different places, because it does not have the same properties. My mother likes pasteurized milk with less fat, so we get it from the Migros (I suppose you saw at least one of those supermarket during your travel). We always have at least one bottle of "farmer's vending machine milk" in our fridge.

      @@AplinsintheAlps it depend when in the fall you plan to come but the hike on the Way of St. James from Konstanz/Kreuzlingen to Weinfelden (with the schloss Ottenberg) is a nice hike. the most of the time you have the lake of konstanz in the back. nice in early fall with yellow red leaves and spring with the white apple trees. If you look on the thurgau-bodensee tourismus website you have many many hiking routes for example a napoleon route where you have many small castels on the road. The "Möhl" museum (from the applewinel is also at the lake in Egnach. And the chocolate Bernrain is located in Kreutzlingen. its possible to visit. in september/oktober we have many small "Oktoberfests" here and "Metzgete" (is a tradition that the pics get slauthed before winter and you celebrate this with many saucages, schnitzel, liver etc.) usualy placed in small traditional restaurants and Gasthäuser.

    So...We're wondering if in all of your walking and hiking do you experience any ticks, mosquitoes or wasps? Although we live in a beautiful, mountainous region (nothing like the Alps but not bad for the mid west) the ticks are so bad that we hardly venture out the front door from April until the first frost. It's terrible here!

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh this is a great question! The mosquitoes looooove Jana (unfortunately). We have experienced plenty of those, although not nearly as bad as we have in Tennessee.
      We have not had any trouble with ticks, and there are lots of bees to pollinate the wildflowers but they don’t tend to bother us much.
      We will probably buy bug spray this year to help with the mosquitos.

    • @Motherof6pack
      @Motherof6pack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AplinsintheAlps That's good to know! Are the mosquitoes bad during the full hiking season or worse at certain times?
      For example, bad during spring and summer and not so bad in the fall.

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One very general observation we've made is that mosquitos tend to be a problem south of the Alps, but not nearly as much north of the Alps. So we see a lot of them in Italy and southern Switzerland, but they really aren't much of an issue around Interlaken. They are around but really don't come out until twilight/dusk. Hope this helps!

    • @Motherof6pack
      @Motherof6pack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AplinsintheAlps Very helpful. So far I've noticed that it seems cheaper to stay in the Interlaken/Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald area. Is this correct?

    • @AplinsintheAlps
      @AplinsintheAlps  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The valley areas will definitely be cheaper (in general) than the mountain villages. But Interlaken is likely also cheaper than the other two you mentioned. Unless you plan to spend all of your time in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Interlaken makes for a great transportation hub and has way more grocery store options if you're looking to save money on food. HINT: Wilderswil is a nice option between Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. Feels much more like a locals' village!
