🚨Breaking news! It's just been announced that Glossy, the new book about Glossier and Emily Weiss that I mention in this video, is being adapted into a TV show by Amazon. Who would you like to see playing super-intern-turned-CEO Emily? x variety.com/2023/tv/news/glossy-book-tv-show-1235765620/
Glossier was so ahead of their time with their products; they basically sabotaged themselves by not going international in their prime. I picked up a few items from their NYC flagship store few years back, but their reluctancy to offer international shipping made me veer towards similar brands that branched out. Coupled with other issues you covered, I'm not interested to get reacquainted
I remember Glossier being the "it" indie brand for me too. It was so different in a world of either high-end department store brands (your mom's brands like Estee Lauder, Clinique, MAC) or drugstore brands. There wasn't much of a choice for in between until they hit the scene, and it was so refreshing.
I would love to see a video on products you still reach for vs. not so much. I will always have a soft spot for Glossier since their skincare and makeup was one of the few brands that agreed with my skin while trying to overcome acne in my late teens and early 20s. But I agree with the views of many others that they should have been doing more from a business standpoint, earlier on.
Thank you Taylor, will definitely work on an updated Glossier Favourites video at some stage! There's certainly a difference between what I think are the highlights of the range for someone trying the brand for the first time vs. what I still reach for regularly in my own routine ☺️👍 x
God I have such mixed feelings about this brand. So many of their mistakes have been completely unforced errors. But the scent of Glossier You is so woven into the memories in my family, nothing makes me feel "me but better" like skin tint, boy brow, and lash slick, I have yet to find a liquid blush as effortless and long wear on me as Cloud Paint. I just wish they made consistent decisions.
'Unforced errors' is such a great way of putting it Marie! Just little decisions along the way that seemed to misread the room or go against what customers responded so well to 🤷♀️ I feel like so many launches in recent years were met by 'but no one asked for this, just give us [insert much requested item here]!' x
I looove this type of content where we can have your thoughts about a brand, it feels like having a conversation with a friend! I don’t really have an opinion on Glossier, I don’t share a past connection with the brand so at the end it’s a question of if the product is good or not and I can’t say it’s nothing extraordinary
Thank you, really appreciate that! I've never done a video like this before (and probably won't do it again haha) but Glossier reviews were a big part of my channel's early growth and the brand has changed a lot since then, so I'm very curious to see if my audience's relationship with the brand has changed too 🔍 x
I remember everyone's obsession with their blushes and being envious of anyone having them. Indeed, they're 9yrs too late. But the chokehold they had on me back in the day, they were so cool.
I live in Europe and I'm glad that glossier finally ships here but it's a little too late for me. I used to be obsessed with the brand, especially because of your videos. The brand was such a breath of fresh air compared to the matte, cakey, instaglam makeup that was trendy at the time. But since then so many other (budget) brands have started selling similar lightweight, creamy makeup products that I lost interest in the brand. Why should I spend €20+ for a cream blush, when I can get a similar product for half the price at the drugstore that works just the same?
Thank you for sharing Krystal (and for watching my old Glossier videos!) ☺️ I'm coming to Europe next year so I'd love to hear what you think I should keep an eye out for in drugstores over there? x
I was a die hard glossier collector as well. I think by the time the 2020 news came out, I had already started slowly getting rid of my glossier products. Mainly due to expirations but I also became uninterested in the brand. I remember how hard it was for me to get it bc I was living in Southeast Asia and seldom made trips back home to NYC. I’m tempted to get reacquainted now that they’re in Sephora, but I agree that it’s too little too late. Other brands are more exciting. It feels regressive. As if I would be going back to my 2016 self even though I’ve worked hard to grow and change.
Matilda, I started watching your channel in 2017 and have watched EVERY one of your Glossier Sundays since they started. These videos gave me something to look forward to every week (I was in a rough patch at the time) and introduced me to a style of makeup that was so underrepresented at the time. Because of your videos I’ve recognized makeup and skincare as self care and therapy-how taking care of your appearance isn’t for anyone else but yourself. Even though Glossier has fallen off the radar a bit I’m so happy to see this update!! Keep going, every video you release just gets better and better!
You have no idea how much this means Sonnie! Making those Glossier videos (and starting my channel in general) was what got me through a difficult time six years ago, so we were helping each other without realising it 🥹❤️ Thank you so much for your support for all these years! x
The cats at the beginning made my heart happy.💜 Honestly I've never gotten into the glossier hype because the marketing never really gravitated me to their products. I definitely cant wait to see where they go this upcoming year!
@@matildaonvideo I love how cats are seen as independent and less clingy to their dog go counterparts, but 98 percent of the time, they are in the same room as you. Just a coincidence I guess 😹
There are a variety of Glossier products I still regularly engage with (their Skywash in “Echo” is honestly a holy grail product, and I’m rationing my OG Glossier You after hearing that it smells completely different after the reformulation). But what I’m most grateful for when it comes to Glossier is you! I was thinking about diving into the brand in 2020, and was introduced to your videos when looking up product reviews. Your content is by far the best thing Glossier has given me. I’ll be here long after the perfume has run out ❤
You inspired me to reach for Echo again Christine! Then the second half of your comment took such a sweet turn, completely surprised me, and made me cry 😂😭❤️ Easily one of the most thoughtful things anyone has said to me in the past six years! Thank you so, so much for your support. I can't express how grateful I am as beautifully as you did! x
As someone who barely used glossier but has followed alll of the developments I don’t think they reformulated for “clean beauty” (they didn’t actually get the check) but for the “vegan” designation and also cheaper / easier to acquire ingredients.
Thank you for sharing this Tamara! 👍 I'd seen so many discussions around the reformulations relating to 'clean' beauty but perhaps vegan beauty was more of the aim x
Glossier and Rare Beauty are just dupes of what has existed in the Korean Beauty industry for 15 yrs or more...I still don't feel the need to shop for the "natural" look in Western brands. I love my Nars, Lisa Eldridge, Colourpop and other brands for a more "dramatic" look. Thanks for this video Matilda, as always, your aesthetic and your soothing voice makes every review worth watching so please create updated reviews :) //BTW, I only noticed that Glossier Play is such a blatant copy of Etude House's Play collection, Pony used to be the face of that!!
Thank you for sharing Niamh, that 'Play' crossover is interesting! Appreciate the kind words too ☺️ I'd love to hear some of your fresh-faced favourites from the K-Beauty world? x
I really enjoyed this format! There is so much emphasis on the products in general, but its rare to find content creators speak about their relationship with brands, the ethics and all other aspects that influence our consumption. And you did so by being honest, but without the ugly bashing. Was really interesting to see the brand's journey through the timeline. Beautiful! 👌🏼 Keep it coming👍🏼
I've been a Glossier girl from the beginning, having followed ITG for many years. I live i Brazil so I could only buy products when I traveled, but I was able to visit the NY store a few times, plus London and LA, and I would always stock up on my favorites. I just finished the book and thought it was very well written and really captured this "movement" that I felt very much a part of. I do feel that the brand has lost a bit of its coolness, but it's nowhere near being over imo.
Hi Matilda, I am a long time subscriber of your channel, since you had like 10-20k subscribers, I love watching your videos, they feel extremely soothing to me. Those old videos you incorporated in the video have a lot of nostalgia to me. Anyways, thank you for your consistency, your nice calming videos; your channel is like a breath of fresh air to me. As a beauty lover, I am so glad your videos exist. I hope these videos never stop coming! thanks again, Sam
I started using Glossier in 2017, while I was a freshman in high school. I was very awkward, and in my ugly duckling era and wasn't sure how exactly makeup worked. When I discovered Glossier, I fell in love! They really made me believe I could look beautiful while still looking natural, and I desperately wanted to be a "Glossier girl", even though i wasn't. I don't think I'll ever stop purchasing their stretch concealer or boy brow. I'm pretty sure since 2017, I've bought at least 8 boy brows. This year felt really quiet for Glossier. I tried their foundation, and I still can't find why my skin ends up feeling so dry. I was excited for their holiday sets this year because I bought all three of their tin sets last year. So far, not impressed and don't think I'll be purchasing their mini blush duos... or the five balm dotcom set, if that's even a part of the holiday release. I was hoping for cookie butter and swiss miss balm dotcom to come back this year, but those won't even be the same! Sunnies Face is my new Glossier lol. They even opened worldwide shipping before Glossier.
Thank you for sharing this Katia! I'm glad they made you feel beautiful 🥹❤️ You are! I know they were still ultimately trying to sell us a product, but it was really one of the first times I'd seen a brand use messaging that was more about enhancing what you looked like, not changing it x
Aww, I love seeing your cats, Matilda 🥰 I think Glossier definitely lost its chokehold on the beauty industry the same way it did when they first launched - especially with all their controversies and now their re-formulations of fan favourites. I’ve definitely lost interest - I guess it didn’t help that it took them so long to ship internationally to Australia 🇦🇺 Although I’ll keep an eye on it from afar and see where this new phase for them leads
The verrry lengthy delay definitely didn't help, on top of everything else Kat! After a while, with so many other options being introduced in the minimal makeup space, you just lose interest 😂 x
I would LOVE to see a video where you talk about your swaps! Glossier was always a product that I could never get (up until two weeks ago, it seems!) and I love the look and concentration of some of their products. For me, Fenty Beauty is just too much product to get the same kind of sheer, washed look... and so it ends up being a lot more expensive. Would love your tips on which products to get that 'Glossier' look but better.
I remember feeling like Glossier was over-hyped when it first started. I was glad they came to Sephora because it made them so much more accesible, and I liked the packaging update on balm dot calm since I primarily use it as a lip balm and it feels much more hygienic now. I also really like the new foundation because it actually offers some coverage! Feels like they are making the necessary changes to be competitive within the current landscape of beauty.
This video is so well done! I loved the commentary and your creative little montages (like the Skywash clock!). Also, lovely flat lay shots. I never really got super into Glossier myself. I've only ever purchased Boy Brow and Cloud Paint. I actually still use the Boy Brow I bought 3-4 years ago because I use it so sparingly (and I like it more now that it's more dried out). But now so many other brands have come out with popular brow gels (Kosas, Em Cosmetics, Persona, etc.), so I probably won't be re-purchasing. I was always intrigued by Glossier, but Merit was the brand I didn't know I needed until it came out! I do think that Olivia Rodrigo partnering with Glossier was maybe the best PR move they've done in years. It really helps capture the attention of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. As a total aside, Pat McGrath did a video for Vogue a month ago ("How Makeup Artist Pat McGrath Creates an Iconic Look") that was super editorial look, but the way Pat applies lipstick made me think of you! She uses a stamping method, so that "you wear the red lip, the red lip doesn't wear you." You might have already seen it, but I thought you would love it!
Thank you for the lovely feedback Freya! I had *too much* old Glossier footage to play with but I tried to tie it into the voiceover as much as I could, so I'm glad you noticed some of those moments 😄⏰ Very good point about the Olivia Rodrigo partnership! I haven't seen that Pat video but will definitely add it to my watch list, thank you x
I've been using Glossier since about...2018, and while I still love some of their stuff I'm not as obsessed with them as I used to be. Their cloud paint blushes are still my favorite, and I'm still getting through my stretch concealer and powder, but I'm excited to see its expanded shade range and once I run out I'll go back to it (and find a better shade for myself as a black person). Those are the only two products I may go back to. While I've tried other stuff, I've found other brands where I like the colors/formulas better or found a similar product for cheaper that I'd rather choose. I've been exposed to the world of Korean beauty that I feel like has been doing the minimal glowy makeup thing for forever and for more affordable. Only thing its hard for me to find in korean makeup that glossier has is the shade range for dark skin. Also, looveee your videos Matilda! First got into Glossier because of these videos back in the day and glad I stuck around :)
Thank you for sharing! I'm excited to see the new concealer and foundation shades too. Glad to hear Cloud Paint still holds up for you! ☺️👏 What's your favourite shade? x
@@matildaonvideo I think Haze and Eve are my favorite. I go for Haze when I want a brighter summery look and Eve when I was something darker and to get that sort of blush/contour vibe.
Love, love, loved this Glossier catch up! So crazy Glossier has been around for so long! I remember when it came out everyone was collecting all the stickers and balms haha! I’m glad you touched on all the goods and flaws of the brands history, doing that is always important. Brand relationships can be tough, like a tug a war once we step back and see the brand for what it was or is. There’ll always be something you love and appreciated about the brand, whereas other times they should’ve done better and be more inclusive and welcoming to all skin tones and for everyone to use. This was such a well done and beautifully done video Matilda! Cheers! 💖
So glad you enjoyed this, thank you! ☺️ The good and bad traits certainly become clearer as time passes and you reach a bit of distance from the hype x
funnily enough, it was you that introduced me to glossier and it was love at first sight with boy brow. their eyeliner was the first with a tip that actually worked for me to the point i learned how to wing it properly as well as you being my first perfume ever. and i'll mourn vinylic lip for the rest of my life! but besides my favorites i haven't really explored the brand more and don't really plan to (besides eventually cloud paint).
Fellow aussie girl here! I got my hands on glossier now for the first ever a few weeks ago but honestly really wished i did not have to wait this long. It was really exciting but quickly became a realisation that i probably wont buy again until they start stocking in sephora here since id love to try the concealer and skin tints but need to be able to try them in person. They really did miss the mark on making a global impact by not shipping internationally for almost a decade.
I LOVED the rose lip balm. I wore it all day, every day. To the point I had a stash saved up so when the new formulation happened it kind of blew under my radar. Then I needed more, and saw the back lash. I finally went to Sephora thinking "it's surely not THAT bad". I swiped a sample, put it on my lips, and within 10 seconds was frantically rubbing it off. I haven't really looked into Glossier bc I like a lot of other brands better - both products and company - but that was the nail in the coffin for me.
@@matildaonvideo The texture was ...goopy? Just thick and not hydrating at all. For science keep it on longer than my 10 seconds haha. I still miss the OG version and haven't found a replacement :(
@@matildaonvideothey removed the lanolin., which was the magic ingredient. 🤦🏻♀️ They really went hard for the Clean at Sephora label, but missed due to fragrance/flavor anyway. They ruined their flagship balm for nothing. 😭 I often just use nipple lanolin anyway, but it’s not as fun when it’s not birthday sparkles. Lol
Feels about 2 years too late. Would have loved to try this brand a few years ago!!! Even thought about flying to the USA to buy it. Now we have so many other options, even in Australia- which to most brands is further away than Mars - glossier may have missed its moment. Ps. Great video as always ❤
Yay! I’ve been here since the beginning Glossier era, and I’m looking forward to the recap! Their limited cloud paint shades were so pretty though, shame you could only get it until it lasted~
@@matildaonvideo Hi Matilda! I believe it was a terracotta shade called rise, it was only available in the cloud paint mini shades, which you can still get now if I’m not wrong!
I don’t use any of their products anymore, but I noticed they have a direct application tip now for their balm, which I always hoped for. I really didn’t like using finger application, especially after COVID.
I sent sooo many emails to Glossier over the years asking them to ship to Australia. So I was initially excited but then kind of felt 'meh'. I did think that the items seemed expensive, as I remembered them being very reasonable. I think now they would need to be in Sephora Aus for me to bother to buy them. I guess my desire to buy their stuff has passed. Now I want Merit! lol.
I'd love to know how many thousands, if not millions of emails they received over the years Julia! I agree, I think the demand would be much higher for MERIT these days. Hopefully they don't take anywhere near nine years to get here 😂 x
If possible, I would really like to hear your opinion of the new cloud paint in puff! I remember being really interested in it because it was a soft baby pink, but I've seen pictures on reddit that they changed the color to be more peachy, and now I don't want to buy it unless it's the original baby pink, and even swatching in Sephora, I'm not sure if the changed it back to the original formula. It really sucks because I used to be so interested in the brand, but I never fully dove in because I couldn't swatch in person
Other people have just been updating me on the changing Puff shade saga in the comments! Might have to pick it up again in the interests of research for a comparison 💕 x
I lost a bit of love for the brand when they discontinued the play line. The eyeliners and lips inspired me soo much and I’m not one who plays with color. I didn’t even know they had glitters. But I recently just bought my first ever order from them due to their holiday scents. I heard they are in the original formula, I bought the hot coco just because of the berry brown color. I have really high hopes so hopefully it delivers
Many, many moons ago, Glossier was how I stumbled across your lovely channel! Being a teenager at the time, both the brand and you had a huge impact on my approach to makeup. This was still in the era of "2016 makeup"; heavy foundation, immaculately blended eyeshadow, and carved out brows. I found Glossier a much more approachable brand, with their lightweight sheer products that didn't need a brush. Despite my obsession, I always found the products a bit too expensive for budget, and only got some for Christmas and birthdays. My skin did NOT react well to the masks, and upon reflection most of the products I tried were pretty meh, ASIDE from haloscope. To this day it's my holy grail highlighter, it lasts me ages and I feel like I look so natural and glowy. I've moved on from everything else they do apart from that! They will still always hold a special place in my heart though.
The pouches certainly come in handy Sabrina! Sorry to break the Milky Jelly news, I'm sure you'll find some more detailed comparison content online from other customers 💔 x
I actually came to this brand much later. I always thought it was a brand for really young people and not middle-aged women. 😂 I still use a handful of their products and the new foundation is actually a really great product. However, when they changed the formula for their priming rich moisturizer, it was kind of gross and I couldn’t use it anymore. But like you said, there are so many other brands to choose from. I love Merit and I love Lisa Eldridge. But I don’t think I can ever part with Glossier You. 😊 Loved the video, Matilda.
I love Glossier, some of my absolute holy grail products are from them. For example the stretch concealer. It’s the only complexion product that I’ve tried that actually looks like skin and feels like skin on me. But now I don’t know if they have reformulated it or not! I also love cloud paint, but after trying the Rare beauty blush I actually prefer that. I think I just find the packaging easier to deal with so I reach for it more. I still love cloud paint and use it often regardless but the packaging can be messy and finicky. I love boy brow but it’s gotten to be really expensive. I remember when it was $12 and now it’s $18!! That’s a lot for a product that I run through pretty quickly. I don’t usually like buying higher end brow products for this reason. Another glossier product that I really love is futuredew. I feel like it’s a pretty underrated product but I love it. It makes my skin look so glowy and gorgeous and it also makes my skin feel really moisturized. I also love the glossier You perfume. It’s my everyday perfume and I love how subtle it is. People always tell me I smell good, they don’t ask what perfume I’m wearing. I was excited to see Glossier in Sephora as a long time glossier fan, but I’m sad to see some reformulations. As I’ve gotten older and more minimal makeup brands have come out I’ve drifted away from Glossier a bit. I’d love to see an updated favourites video from you!
Thank you, will definitely work on an updated favourites video! ☺️👍 Very curious to see if the concealer was reformulated alongside the Stretch Foundation launch, I’m not sure x
I like this style of vid from you! Good to know more about the brand. Would have been a ten out of ten vid if we also had an opinion on your current favourite products from the brand. Also, big appreciation for the included kitties! X 😊
Thank you Kay! Glad you enjoyed this video style for a change ☺️ Probably a one-off chatty format from me, but given Glossier was a major part of my channel's early growth and after the big shipping news, I was curious to see how my audience felt about the brand these days. I wanted to see if people were even interested anymore before I shared any product-focused content! Will work on my updated favourites in the new year after I've a chance to try a few updated/new formulas in the US soon x
I was never a Glossier super fan but was definitely more interested back then than I am now. The last time I purchased boy brow it ran out much sooner than usual so they’ve either changed the formula or reduced the amount you get so I’ve switched to elf wow brow. The only product I continue to buy is future dew, for me there’s nothing better for when my skin is dry and the weather is cold!
Elf Wow Brow is a great swap Alison! Interesting, I was never that gripped by Futuredew because a lot of my moisturisers and sunscreen give me a dewy finish already. I'd love to hear how you use it, all over the face / mixed in / pinpointed? ✨ x
I just use it on my cheeks and round my nose in the winter! Don’t need it anywhere else but I get so dry when it’s cold and I find it’s the best thing to layer over sunscreen that doesn’t break up my foundation or whatever I’m applying over the top but still gives me a glow/stops concealer settling into my dry skin!
🙌🙌 Updated faves of Glossier pls !! 🌸🌸 would be exceptionally helpful! I know you have a link to the products but nothing substitutes your video style n fun voice! Danke xxx
I would absolutely love in depth reviews of the best sellers matilda!! Ive waited for international shipping 4 years now, and now that its here i find myself hesitating, especially on the cloud paints since rare beauty filled my liquid blush void.
I’m definitely not glossier crazy like I used to be but always rebuy The Solution. However, I saw a review about the formula possibly changing so I’m nervous about that? I also got back into cloud paint recently and have been loving it. After not purchasing since it’s originally release, I now have 4 shades. Love ultralip too, but probably won’t buy any other products of theirs.
Thank you for this, Matilda! ♥️ it’s so refreshing to hear a beauty content creator talk about not only the reformulations, but also about their DEI problems. Really appreciate this 🫶🏻 and, I’m super sad about the You reformation - it was my favorite perfume since it launched, and now it barely lasts and doesn’t have the same creaminess as before 😭 and, like you mentioned, BDC being redone was also so sad! Ugh!
Thank you Kelsey, I appreciate that! There were certainly a lot of highs and lows to fit into the video but the diversity issues were such a key moment that needed to be included. Sorry to hear about the You changes, someone else just mentioned it! 😱 What a shame, so many people will be disappointed x
i'm still a big fan of many products from the brand that have been staples in my routine (lash slick, stretch concealer, glossier you, boy brow) but i will say that the brand definitely took directions that i wasn't super fond of? the reformulations and high price raises have been a major bummer and i feel like the market is very oversaturated with cool girl clean beauty (merrit, rare beauty, kosas) but i will always love my staples and the cute pink packaging! i still wish the play liners never got discontinued they were absolute favorites of mine! very excited to read the new book!
Lots of great points here Taylor, thank you for sharing! Still not over Colorslide either 😭 I know the new No.1 Pencils tried to capture their colourful spirit again (and I do really like the lavender Muse) but it's just not the same x
I still religiously use Wowder and their perfume! But I agree it’s been quiet over at Glossier for a while and they’ve made some questionable business decisions. I think they should reinvest in ITG where it all began because that’s where the sense of community grew from 😊
@@matildaonvideo They thankfully still post over there but I think they need to promote it a lot more and maybe carry some of it over to TH-cam like the Architectural digest model 🙏🙌🤌
Ordered Glossy SO fast !! I hope the tv show does better than Girlboss did (the Nastygal one). A product swaps/formulas video would be amazingggggg but I’ll watch anything you put out, Glossier or not !
I still love their milky jelly cleanser although I didn’t know it was reformulated! I haven’t replaced my finished one but I will probably notice a difference now that I know haha! I tried their reformulated BDC and not a fan. It is just very runny and you have to keep reapplying it. I wish they had given us some notice before their reformulation, I would have restocked on mint BDC as that is my bedside lip balm! They were out of stock for agesss and then they made an announcement that they will change the formula 😢.I have ordered their holiday BDC in original formula and looking forward to try those! Also I liked their stretch foundation as it didn’t make me cakey!
Hi Matilda, thanks a lot for your videos , i love watching them 🙂 Glossier hits me different: I live in Germany , where we can't get it.For almost ten years, they have not been able to ship internationally, wow now i really lost my interest , i think that Glossier has always been overhyped and keeping the product only available to a special `group`of customers was a big part of that. Luckily these 9 years made other brands create similar products that are even better and way cheaper (Boy brow-wow brow)
Thank you for watching! 🥰 You're definitely not alone there - nine years was far too long to wait so a lot of people have lost interest and found nice alternatives like you did! x
I remember the Glossier fever when they first launched! 2016 Instaglam makeup was huge back then and Glossier really stood out and were ahead of the time. But now their competitors have surpassed them. I still use and love some of their products, like Cloud Paint, the Gen Gs, Ultralip and the new Stretch Foundation, but I think the brand has definitely suffered from erratic commercial decision-making and it does make me wonder how long they will stick around if they don’t pull together soon.
I used to be a Glossier stan, including their controversial (and often disliked) Skin Tint. It was difficult to find makeup that wasn’t heavy coverage before! I used to mix serum with a BB cream to get a similar, sheer consistency. However, as I’ve gotten older I do want a bit more coverage and I think the younger generation does go for a heavier beat of “No Makeup” makeup. It’s a tad too minimal nowadays. For me, You perfume is their one saving grace. It’s my signature scent and I absolutely love it, I know I’ll keep purchasing it for as long as Glossier is around. However, given the lack of exciting new launches, if it wasn’t for their perfume, Glossier may have fell on the sidelines for me. I’d love to see you review the Milky Cleansing Bar soon, it’s the one product I’m curious about atm.
Thanks for sharing Rachel! I was always a skin tint fan too, I loved the light coverage. Another commenter just mentioned that Glossier You was reformulated as well so I hope you're not disappointed next time you buy it! 🫣 x
Thanks for sharing, glad you still enjoy it! 👍 I'd love to hear some of the other brands you tried but weren't as impressed by / what your favourite Glossier products are? x
The main reason I went back to Glossier was because they actually opened a store in my city. It makes using and replacing their products SO much easier.
Just mentioning that the price difference of ~20% would include the fact that we (Aus) have 10% GST included in the prices while the US prices do not have tax included, which you could assume is around 10% USD, so the pricing is actually closer than it looks. I still love a lot of Glossier products. I have always kept an eye on them and have eventually managed to try the launches that appealed to me, I'd say I've tried about half of what they sell as there a bunch of things that I've never really been interested in. I couldn't agree more that 9 years is far too late, I'm very happy they're now shipping internationally and I was very excited when it happened as I had given up hope as well. I'm curious to see how they're received by people who have never had access to them at all and are only just going to learn about them for the first time now they are available in so many more regions.
Very good point about GST Jessica, thank you for mentioning that! I wonder if the prices will also fluctuate with the exchange rate. Interested to see the international response too! ✈️ x
Great video as always Matilda! I loved their milky jelly cleanser and boy brow but didn’t leave Australia often enough to repurchase so found alternatives (Jordan Samuel Skin for the win!) so would be super interested to hear your swaps! I think I’m also a bit older (40 is creeping up way too fast!) so wasn’t quite so into the hype once I’d tried things out. It takes a lot to get me very hyped on makeup because I’m a real minimalist in that space.
@@matildaonvideo I’ve tried both the Matinee Gel Cleanser (which is not dissimilar to the Glossier MJC) and the Aftershow Plié Cleanser. The former is more a lightweight gel which doesn’t really melt down into an oil so is a good lightweight cleanse. The latter is definitely a gel to oil but has the most beautiful scent and feels very luxurious on the skin. Both are staples in my routine for evening cleansing! Highly recommend.
I began using Glossier's pink bag set back in 2015, which included a primer moisturizer, a rose spray, a tint, and a lip balm. Unfortunately, I had an allergic reaction to the rose spray, but their customer service was quick to refund the entire set. I took a break from purchasing Glossier products until their pop-up shop in London in 2019 and a permanent store in 2022. There was a time when I stopped following Glossier due to concerns about their treatment of staff, but I recently rekindled my interest, hoping they've made positive changes. What I find captivating about Glossier is its unique charm. As someone who initially delved into Korean beauty products, I appreciate that Glossier offers a distinctive American teenage cosmetics aesthetic, akin to what we often see in American teen movies. In my view, it represents a different style compared to Korean cosmetics.
I'm very happy that Glossier is now shipping internationally so I can get my hands on them in the Netherlands. I have some products that I've used for years (ordered them when I went to the UK) and still use today, like the stretch concealer and the generation g lipsticks/balms ones. For me, it still holds a lot of appeal since other 'clean' brands are still hard to get a hold off here. And I know more or less what to expect with these products. I do completely agree that they're very very late to the international shipping game...but I'm a happy customer nonetheless
Honestly, I had sort of forgotten that Glossier was still around. When I first got involved with the makeup community Glossier was the new big thing. I really wanted to try some of the products (especially the blush) but because of the shipping issue and the extra taxes my country has for any stores based outside of the EU I never bought anything. And because of those taxes I still won’t try the brand. If they end up on our local Sephora (which has very few brands and is nothing compared to the American one) I might possibly buy something on sale some day.
Totally understand! The industry moved on so many of us did too, particularly when there were always so many hurdles to get access to Glossier. Thanks for watching! ☺️ x
The reformulation of btc broke me. It was the only lipbalm that healed my lips while on accutane. It was my favourite "matte" lipbalm. The reformulation is greasy and oily and just sits on top, it leave my lips CRACKED and bleeding if i smile or yawn. Worst lipbalm ever now :(
I feel like a major part of Glossier's original brand messaging was it-girl exclusivity. That didn't extend to just the products themselves, but who could buy them, too. As a fellow Australasian, I too gave up the hope of ever seeing the brand ship to our shores. If there's one phrase I'd use to describe Glossier's new era, it would be an attempt at inclusion (even the stretch foundation covering more than a slight hint of colour, unlike the skin tint feels worlds apart from the model-off-duty aesthetic it once had). I excitedly placed an order on the day the news dropped though, and can't wait to try some of the formulas I've been coveting for years! It feels like buying a piece of beauty nostalgia.
Great observations Lydia! I nearly mentioned something along those lines in my voiceover - that 'cool girl' minimal makeup started to feel off-putting to some people, particularly if it's only designed for the genetically blessed 😂 I'd love to see your inclusive hopes for the brand come to fruition! x
in 2018 I messaged them on twitter asking for international shipping (mind you, i am based in italy and found ridiculous they shipped to france but not us lol). they said "soon"! it's 2023 and the hype is over for me, unfortunately. especially because, like you mentioned, in recent years the new similar brands gave me what I was missing. In terms of aesthetics, Rare comes close. So no, I won't be purchasing from them anytime soon. I'd like to see what new products you use instead!! xx
Despite being kind of salty with them for how long it took them I did place an order to try Glossier You and also the concealer in the new shades: hopefully it lives up to the hype!
Glossier is my favorite brand but I live in the u.s. and wasn’t affected by shipping delays I’m sorry for who were but I am ghostly pale so certain things like finding makeup that works for me is difficult my favorites are the concealer which I bought my first one a week before the announcement of different shades 🤦🏻♀️ I also really love their liquid eyeshadows both matte and shimmer I have pebble in the matte and I have the green shimmer I also love the cloud paints and I have a lot of blush yet they still stick out too me I have the pale peach shade and I have had the halo scope in the past it was good but it was before the lightest shade came out I think it’s called moon and I would probably do better with that also I don’t use sticks that often but still great nonetheless very hydrating I have the mascara I have tried it in both black and brown the black I didn’t care about but the brown is a favorite I only wish it wasn’t tubing because it is impossible to get of my eyes with an oil because you’re supposed to use warm water and that sounds like a lot of steps lol I have their eyeliner in patina it is my favorite eyeliner creamy but still a bit powdery in a good way goes on really easy one step which is important also very easy to take off at the end of the day :)
I live in India and used to dream about the day Glossier would be accessible to me. Even on my trips abroad I could never get my hands on it because I never travelled to the very select few countries they were available in. Beauty in India has seen a huge boom in the past 5-7 years. Rare Beauty launched in Sephora India this year and several Kbeauty brands like Romand, Peripera, Etude House etc. Are readily available through official beauty E-retailers and yet Glossier's shipping to India is not only expensive because of the price hike but also because it doesn't include customs. Which means I'll have to pay extra for customs after I order and could cost me more than the price of the items themselves!
Being an industry leader, early on, while there is hardly any competition can backfire a bit later, when other horses enter the race. I understood the hype, but never got into the products as a 40+ consumer. Then about two years ago I visited the New York City store in downtown Manhattan-waiting online for nearly an hour. After being “checked in” by an annoyed and bored employee, I made my way around the store without being asked once whether or not I needed help or had any questions about the products. It was clear they could barely be bothered with a customer who was beyond their targeted demographic. Needless to say, I didn’t purchase a thing, but it was still an interesting experience. I’m not sure I would engage with glossier again now that there are other more sophisticated brands that I find much more thoughtful about the customer experience. Frankly, this brand always felt a little teen-queen to me.
Good point, it's a much more crowded race now 🐎 Sorry to hear about your store experience, that's a shame! I always enjoyed their creative store design (although sometimes the atmosphere can feel a little 'too cool') x
I also fell for the hype years ago and paid so much forwarding fees just to get my hands on some boybrows and cloud paints! But, when so many other brands came along that are way more accessible, their exclusivity no longer was intriguing, just inconvenient. Also their IG comment section is filled with so many consumer concerns and feedback, kind of a downer especially when they choose not to respond.
I'd hate to think how much I spent on forwarding over the years Stephanie 🫣 Luckily I had a friend I split it with in the end, but I think Aussie Glossier fans used to keep ShopMate in business! x
my all time favorite glossier product was future dew - and living in europe I could never get it unless a friend visited the US :( Super happy about international shipping now! But would still be great to find out if there's a more accessible dupe. I have searched high and low over the years and have tried many self proclaimed 'dupes' but they just never really hit future dews' unique oil/serum formula leaving glossy non-sticky skin that felt and looked amazing. Any tips ? :)
I haven't really explored this category unfortunately! I have a few favourites in the 'glowy base product' world but none that have that Futuredew texture. Could Glow Recipe's Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops be a possibility? I haven't tried them but just came to mind! ✨ x
@@matildaonvideo I actually tried that one recently as it was recommended as a dupe, and it was a no unfortunately - it leaves a sticky residue and feels more like their mask. So far future dew has been pretty unique, but I'm sure there must be similar products I just haven't discovered yet :)
Speaking for Europe, not all products are available for international shipping and the prices seem weirdly expensive compared with the prices I saw at the Glossier flagship store in London eight months ago.
You're quite right Despina - I mentioned that the Australian website pricing is higher in the video, but I think the same applies to every international destination! Pretty disappointing 🫣 x
Glossier is significant part for makeup history. In 2014, makeup was very different: matte, heavy etc and I think it did some part in changing from heavy matte makeup to dewy light makeup. I've never owned glossier (not in US) but always had it on a pedestal. I think there is just so much more competition in the makeup scene now and glossier hasn't really evolved as a brand - they did try glossier play but that didn't get as popular as their core products. The diversity issue is another one once fenty released their foundation range, so many followed suit that any company which didn't have a large shade range of base makeup became old fashioned. But it took waaay to long to be in retailers and ship outside US. Only when they were losing money they expanded their audience. Makes me think they intended it to be restricted and exclusive. Like the glossier girl was a particular person people wanted to be. Now they ship internationally, I might treat myself to some of their products for old times sake and to finally live my dream in 2018 hahaha.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I loved your point about it being intentionally exclusive and the Glossier girl being someone people wanted to be, very interesting 👏 x
I think for me, the novelty of glossier products wore off after a while. This must have been after the re-formulation because I didn’t really feel like they performed as beautifully as they used to! I was around when Glossier opened their doors in London (both in 2019 and 2021) and even then I wasn’t as enticed by their products. that’s not to say i don’t anticipate a global comeback because glossier really did mean a lot to me when I was in high school!
Thanks for sharing Nazurah! I did always find their store designs really creative, so I'm still looking forward to visiting the London store for the first time next year 🇬🇧 x
I think my initial comment was lost :( . The video for me it's so nostalgic. I used to know the glossier lineup by heart even though it was never available in my corner of the eu. At the time it felt such cool and revolutionary. But for skincare youth to the people got that unfussy gentle formulas for me. Love their cleanser and light moisturizer. In the meantime i have k beauty moisturizers that mimic that milky jelly texture. ( inisfree jam cleanser , cosrx snail cleanser, etc). The sunscreens also have gotten better, i have acces to purito, isntree, ultraviolette, beauty of joseon. I have new favourite for sheer matte lipstick , i have bought and finished a lot of cream blush alternatives. Companies like kulfi beauty, rituel de fille, kosas , rose inc , tower28 ,nudestix, merit are now much more in the spotlight. Not to speak of rare and fenty which have extensive lineups. I saw pacco rabane do eyeshadow in tubes that reminded me of cloud paint and felt very nostalgic. I think i will order a new puff for nostalgia sake , but not more for now
Sorry Anca, I didn't see it! Sometimes TH-cam and internet connections work in mysterious ways and I lose replies to comments too 😳 Sounds like you have found lots of great brand and product alternatives over the years! Thank you for sharing x
Well said, sometimes even computers work in mysterious ways. Yes, I'm ok on the alternatives but I would still want to see your recap of formulas that you still love and/or replacements . I like beauty history and glossier had definitely a place in the millennial beauty history
Sad bc by the time I was able to afford glossier, a lot of the cool glossier play products were gone 😭 I sometimes find myself lusting after the hand cream, though.
I have such mixed opinions about Glossier. Politically, I didn’t love all the bad press about legitimate issues with the brand. But they have so many of my holy grail items (Gen G in Like, Skywash in Pebble) that I hope they stick around for a while. But I agree that they haven’t launched anything recently that I’ve been obsessed with. Merit is great but their shades are all too warm-toned to look good on me soooo, more searching is necessary.
Their shipping isn’t what they promised. I placed my order on 11 October, it was shipped 12 Oct and 15 days later it still hasn’t been delivered. 4-6 days for shipping is definitely not accurate unfortunately.
Glossier is that one brand I adore on branding alone. The motto of “You Look Good” is iconic now and you recognize immediately at a glance. You become apart of the community when you slap that sticker on something or tell yourself it in the mirror. But I think where the brand hinders it is with the abundance of “limited edition” that never bodes well with their audience. People shouldn’t panic to go buy new shades of cloud paint purely because it might not be there next week. Despite that, their recent Stretch line is a move in the right direction. I highly doubt they’ll ever address their criticism (rightly so) on the new BDC, but maybe they’ll learn moving forward. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
Thank you for sharing! That's interesting, they're not a brand that comes to mind for me in terms of lots of 'limited edition' launches. I feel like they had a core range that stayed fairly consistent and didn't lean on endless new launches or limited products that suddenly re-appear again later (apart from sets or exclusive shades during the holidays, which every brand does now) 🎁 x
@@matildaonvideo I agree! I think they have a good core of product ranges, but the ones that get people excited never stay for long. An example that came to mind was the craze over Cookie Butter and Swiss Miss BDC that people begged for to be permanent. It’s a lot more frequent with their lifestyle merchandise with various items coming and going very often.
Good point Maddy! I always liked that Glossier's range grew gradually and they didn't lean on new launches as often as other brands, but maybe that's what you have to do to keep up these days 💄 x
I was tempted to buy some of my favorite products but the price hike turned me off immediately. For that price, I would rather buy something more high-end.
I can imagine other people feel the same about the pricing, very disappointing 💸 I was thinking about ordering from Australia to save space/weight in my suitcase when I'm in the US soon, but I'd rather save a bit of money by shopping there instead! x
I wish they would reformulate their hero products back into something better than these existing formulas. It seems like people were happy with the old versions. This happened with Bite Beauty several years ago. Their customers loved the original agave lip mask. Now, Bite Beauty isn’t around as a retailer (as we know it). Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to Glossier.
I am in Southeast Asia and felt that Glossier has really missed the golden opportunity for international customers. There are so many new brands now in 2023 with different but equally attractive branding and updated formulas. Plus with the reformulation I am not sure if I want to spend to try Glossier now. For me, Merit Beauty looks more tempting instead for the grown up luxe minimalist vibe.
I only swear by a few products from Glossier now: the brown mascara, boy brow, gen g lipstick, the eyeliners, body lotion, the DEODORANT (which is actually one of my holy grails) and my mini samples of you. (Even though I couldn't resist buying a sweatshirt hoodie,) the brand has REALLY fallen off for me when Emily stepped down. I feel like it's not the same anymore from when i first found the brand when the Colorslides where still there before being discontinued. I honestly think Rare Beauty is my new holy grail and I might have to go back to ELF. And yeah while I'll continue to use my products everyday, I'm no longer excited about any new launches from the brand anymore.
Thanks for sharing Sophie! Interesting, I haven't tried the deodorant before. I think Colorslides being discontinued was a key moment for many of us! 😂😭 x
🚨Breaking news! It's just been announced that Glossy, the new book about Glossier and Emily Weiss that I mention in this video, is being adapted into a TV show by Amazon. Who would you like to see playing super-intern-turned-CEO Emily? x

OMG!!! this makes me so excited. it’s def giving off devil wears prada vibes and im here for it!! 💗

Emma Watson?
Glossier was so ahead of their time with their products; they basically sabotaged themselves by not going international in their prime. I picked up a few items from their NYC flagship store few years back, but their reluctancy to offer international shipping made me veer towards similar brands that branched out. Coupled with other issues you covered, I'm not interested to get reacquainted
It does feel like self-sabotage! Unnecessarily too with so much funding that could've helped back their expansion much sooner 🤷♀️ x
I remember Glossier being the "it" indie brand for me too. It was so different in a world of either high-end department store brands (your mom's brands like Estee Lauder, Clinique, MAC) or drugstore brands. There wasn't much of a choice for in between until they hit the scene, and it was so refreshing.
Very good point Krista! They really stood out at the time, but I'm glad we have lots of fresh-faced friends to choose from in the industry now ☺️👍 x
Absolutely, they were the epitome of cool back in the day! But that's the problem.. it was years ago now 😳 x
They were so little, that's from my very first video! All grown up now 😻 x
@@matildaonvideopetition to bring back the kitties 🐈⬛ 😊
@@hannahkenny502 agree! cat lovers are keen!
Too big and less interested now haha, but a sleeping cat is never far away when I'm filming! 😸 x
Appreciate the kind words too ☺️ I'd love to hear some of your fresh-faced favourites from the K-Beauty world? x

that is true but these brands are more accessible to those living in the west
I really enjoyed this format! There is so much emphasis on the products in general, but its rare to find content creators speak about their relationship with brands, the ethics and all other aspects that influence our consumption. And you did so by being honest, but without the ugly bashing. Was really interesting to see the brand's journey through the timeline. Beautiful! 👌🏼 Keep it coming👍🏼
i can’t believe i’ve been following you for that long! safe to say you’ve always had quality in mind when putting together a video :)
Thank you for being here for so long! 🥹❤️ x
Thank you for sharing Larissa! Very interested to read it 📖 x
Would love a starter / introduction kit video including some of your favourites!
I’m 52 and still use the basic set each am prior to exercising and love it. Ease of use, fairly priced and works well for me.
This is so nice to hear Em! Glad it works well for you ☺️👏 x
Happy to hear you'd be interested in a video along those lines Kady, thank you! Definitely going on my filming list ☺️👍 x
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on some recent product updates Rachel! Excited to test the foundation in person soon 👀 x
I love this and I love glossier so much. Please do some updated vids, I miss your old glossier videos :)
☺️ The good and bad traits certainly become clearer as time passes and you reach a bit of distance from the hype x
funnily enough, it was you that introduced me to glossier and it was love at first sight with boy brow. their eyeliner was the first with a tip that actually worked for me to the point i learned how to wing it properly as well as you being my first perfume ever. and i'll mourn vinylic lip for the rest of my life! but besides my favorites i haven't really explored the brand more and don't really plan to (besides eventually cloud paint).
this reminds me of your videos in 2018!!!!! i love it
Thank you Janki! I used old footage 😉 x
Wow, what made it so bad?! I loved rose too but I think I still need to try the new balms in the interests of research 🫣 x
@@matildaonvideo The texture was ...goopy? Just thick and not hydrating at all. For science keep it on longer than my 10 seconds haha. I still miss the OG version and haven't found a replacement :(
I liked the old balm too, I had the cherry one, then I got a new one in a different scent, and I detested it as well. The new ones are awful.
Thank you Heidi! '2 years too late' is very kind and understanding of you.. I'm probably voting for 5-6 years too late instead 😂 x
Yay! I’ve been here since the beginning Glossier era, and I’m looking forward to the recap! Their limited cloud paint shades were so pretty though, shame you could only get it until it lasted~
Thank you for being here for so long Violet! 🥰👏 Ooh wait, what were the limited edition shades?! x
@@matildaonvideo Hi Matilda! I believe it was a terracotta shade called rise, it was only available in the cloud paint mini shades, which you can still get now if I’m not wrong!
The new shades - soar and wisp - are stunning too!
LOVE this podcast/bit more critical view/ video format!!! So interesting!!!❤❤❤
I didn't know about milky jelly until today 😢😭 and I still want the pink pouches, I use them so much in a variety of ways
Hey Matilda :) Please do a video for Anne Hathaway or Jennifer Lawrence's makeup bag anytime! Their "newer" makeup style is so stunning now
I was never a Glossier super fan but was definitely more interested back then than I am now.
Danke xxx
Thank you Zara, much appreciated! 🥰 Definitely going on my filming list x
Swaps would be SO helpful. Also RIP moon mask
I would absolutely love in depth reviews of the best sellers matilda!! Ive waited for international shipping 4 years now, and now that its here i find myself hesitating, especially on the cloud paints since rare beauty filled my liquid blush void.
Thank you, definitely adding that topic to my filming list! 😄🎥 x
I think they should reinvest in ITG where it all began because that’s where the sense of community grew from 😊
Love that call about ITG! It was truly where my beauty obsession started to blossom, so I have them to thank/blame 😂 x
Hi Matilda, thanks a lot for your videos , i love watching them 🙂
Glossier hits me different: I live in Germany , where we can't get it.For almost ten years, they have not been able to ship internationally, wow
now i really lost my interest , i think that Glossier has always been overhyped and keeping the product only available to a special `group`of customers was a big part of that.
Great points here Mia! Thank you for watching ☺️👏 x
I used to love Glossier! I’m yet to try their new formulas, the stretch concealer was always a fave ❤
Curious to see how/if the new Stretch Concealer has changed Keely! 👀 x
They're still my favourite. Their stuff is just better than the things I've tried from some other new brands.
Thanks for sharing, glad you still enjoy it! 👍 I'd love to hear some of the other brands you tried but weren't as impressed by / what your favourite Glossier products are? x
The only thing I still use from them is the moisturizer, as of right now haven’t found anything else that beats it
The main reason I went back to Glossier was because they actually opened a store in my city.
Thank you lovely! Ooh which Jordan Samuel formula? Adding the product swaps video to my list! ☺️👍 x
Yes!! I ordered that original set too! The first four products they ever made. Those were the days! Thank you for sharing your thoughts 👏 x
Glad you have much easier access now! ☺️ Thanks for watching x
Worst lipbalm ever now :(
Nooo sorry to hear! Why do brands tinker with their cult products (I'm thinking of Bite Beauty's Agave Lip Mask too) 💔 x
It's genuinely just flavored Vaseline but worse now
I feel like a major part of Glossier's original brand messaging was it-girl exclusivity.
I'd like to see what new products you use instead!! xx
i will ALWAYS be in love with boy brow!
Still one of their best creations Izzy! 👏 x
I love your cats!
Thank you! Still sleeping near me when I film these days 😻 x
Despite being kind of salty with them for how long it took them I did place an order to try Glossier You and also the concealer in the new shades: hopefully it lives up to the hype!
Please report back and let me know what you think! Glossier You isn't my type of fragrance but I'd recognise that scent anywhere 😄 x
Thank you for sharing your favourites Melissa! Definitely a pro-level Glossier fan ☺️👏 x
I always wanted to try glossier but specially now that i tend to use Kbeauty I don't feel the need or want anymore tbh
I wish Glossier Play had been more of a success and stuck around Leela! 💔 x
Intro is so gorgeous
Thank you! It was nice to revisit some of my old videos ☺️🎥 x
Thanks for sharing Constance! Let's see if any upcoming launches really catch our eye 👀 x
Their shipping isn’t what they promised. I placed my order on 11 October, it was shipped 12 Oct and 15 days later it still hasn’t been delivered. 4-6 days for shipping is definitely not accurate unfortunately.
Glossier You has also been reformulated. The newer version is a lot weaker and barely lasts an hour.
Not another reformulation!? Wow, can't imagine Glossier You fans would be happy 😱 x
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
This video style is a first for me so I'm sorry for how long you've been waiting Josephine 😂👏 x
i love love love this podcastesque format! its like a little bedtime story for me 🤭🤭@@matildaonvideo
@@superawesomechild Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it 🥰 x
It’s a lot more frequent with their lifestyle merchandise with various items coming and going very often.
i love glossier still, but really think they need to launch more products. one or maybe two? a year is not enough in this market
Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to Glossier.
to this day I haven't found a base product I like as much as their skin tint.
Thank you for watching Jolynn! You're right, it was a golden opportunity missed. MERIT is much more exciting to me too now ☺️👍 x
The only glossier products I can't resist are the blushes and perfume, otherwise the hype has kind of gone away for me over time
You wouldn't be alone Vidhi, I think the perfume has a hold on a lot of people! Not for me sadly, but I can still recognise it anywhere 😂 x
Definitely feel it is too late for Australia, there is too much competition 💁♂
Thank you Aaron! I'm sure a lot of Aussies feel the same way, they took too long ⏰ x
they’ve changed the formulas to a couple of products and they just aren’t the same. a real damn shame 😔
THEY’VE CHANGED MILKY JELLY CLEANSER?!!!!
