    I don't know but I imagine the ridges on the cranks are to counteract the problems we've seen with previous Hollowtech cranks breaking. Obviously 9200 Dura-Ace is an evolutionary step, and Shimano does appear to be providing what the cycling world wants, at least for the large contingent that is in team Shimano. Great content and description as always.

      @@noahhalbfoster6892 GIven how many of these cranksets they manufacture, the failure rate is remarkably small. Whilst I'm not trying to defend Shimano's manufacturing, QC, or tolerencing, their engineering definetly isn't the worse in the industry.

    • @matt-10229
      @matt-10229 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe those "ridges" will be very functional. Essentially the crank is an "I" beam with a scalloped section between the two. Those ridges are increasing the second moment of area which is important for a structural component keeping it strong but light weight. The symmetry of the crank now is a good thing for the accuracy of the integrated powermeter.

    • @matt-10229
      @matt-10229 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@noahhalbfoster6892 Well that wouldn't be incorrect. But it's also pretty obvious that common trend with these failed cranks is that the bonding breaks down due to corrosion as a lot of people don't look after their equipment properly - improving the bonding agent would be a solution. When the cranks do have a catastrophic failure where a user could get injured, there would have been many tell tale signs that something was wrong and the user should have stopped using the crank and inspected it. Signs would include noticeably more flex, the bodies pealing away, and potential appearance of fracture lines. The cranks don't just snap because you got ou the saddle and put out some more power. These cases happen over a period of time and neglect from what I see. We don't know if the new cranks have been improved, Shimano have never commented on it so why would they mention any improvement in the new cranks? That would be an admison that the previous version weren't up to it if that was true.

      @@noahhalbfoster6892 I suppose one thing I have learnt since I started to work closer with Asian manufacturers is that pride can be a very big thing for them. In the west for example it isn't shameful to take responsibility for mistakes. I think that problem specifically might be cultural.

    Great review David, as always. Same feelings here... I have issues with the looks as the connection of the spider to the chainring looks disjointed and unfinished. I had a choice to get the DA or the SR EPS and ended up with the Campag. Yes, it does not shift as fast or as quiet as the DA and less wiring and smaller front and rear derailleurs but for me, the EPS looks great and I love how the Ergopower hoods feel in hand, especially with the easy to use thumb shifters.

    Nice review. Only point I'd make is that knocking Shim for not leveraging 12spd to increase range is really done to the cassette choice on the bike, you could also have gone for 11-34 which gives you the range and uses the extra cog to keep the middle of the cassette nice and tight.

    Another well presented and edited video with honest appraisal. Have Shimano improved the rotors? You did mention not rubbing when making hard out effort.Perhaps a longer test on steep and long descents to get some heat into them will show.Peak Torque likes to swap his rotors for Campag. Also is the cracking/delamination of the cranks sorted? Personally I am not a fan of black finishes.Polished alloy looks way more classy ,especially with my classic bikes.

    So fairly lukewarm reception then. I'd prefer some more highly finished polished sections, or just anything a bit more interesting than this dull black finish, or perhaps something more like that 90's XTR matte grey would be more interesting and more durable...Confirms anyway, I'll be on Campy Record Mechanical rim for the next decade- lighter, cheaper, longer lasting, less batteries...Plus - that nice middle block 15/16/17 tooth progression existed back in Sh 10spd on the 12-27, but was only on the smaller blocks in 11spd in preference to more range on the 11-28- so many riders already know what that feels like, but may have forgotten, it's a nice thing to have for sure.

    Would much have rathered the charging be done via the front mech so that the cost of the rear (if you crash) would be less!!

      Really good point. The front mech would be a lot less vulnerable. Maybe they are future-proofing against use of a 1x system?

Besides, I was in Spain cycling 10 days, and the only people with shifting problems were those with a electronic shift. Every other day a new one. 😂

    • @squiresuzuki
      @squiresuzuki 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a fair point -- if electronic shifting basically solves all FD woes, then why not add a granny gear (marginal weight)? It would probably make the bike lighter overall since you could get use an 11-28 in the rear instead of 11-34 or whatever, while also increasing range, while also improving chainline. Shimano did actually have 3x11 Di2 in the previous generation XTR groupset.

    Agree with David - looks do matter (let’s not talk about the ugliness that is this aero vomit Orbea thing lol). And Shimano had decades to improve upon the looks of both the crank and the derailleur as well as the levers. And they didn’t. They kept it standard and rather uneventful (not a bad thing but we’re talking purely looks people!)
    I’d venture to say the “old” DA might look a bit better but not by much. The hoods being smaller on the old DA win, these new hoods look massive.
    When you look at something sexy and edgy like Record / Super Record and even Chorus, the new DA just looks well... functional, basic, bland and rather Japanese. Boring basically. And that might be the point here. But they could’ve gone with a carbon or carbon weave, added a pinch of color even changed the DA typeface.
    Even the last-gen carbon weave Record rear derailleur and carbon weave levers were downright sex when it comes to appearances. And the polished chrome groups from yesteryear will always look better than today’s “make everything black” motif. But that’s the direction of the industry.
    Also surprised last-gen DA doesn’t have servo-wave braking tech (my GRX 810 bike does and it does work really well) albeit it’s a new group.
    Certainly a great group that will lead the industry in many ways, curious to see what Campagnolo does next...

      @@Loekie-de-leeuw ball sack might be the killer here. Haha. Not a fan of aero at all. IMHO it’s just a stupid fad that’s made bikes ugly with wind tunnel influenced design over traditional design, but I’m more of a traditionalist. Purely subjective, different people like different things :)

      As someone who works on bikes, I find its technical design intriguing, like the two-piece cockpit (compatible with any handlebar), single-bolt saddle clamp (plus 0 - 25 mm offset by flipping the clamp) and under-stem routing (allows for easy stem length swaps).
      If my observations are correct, with a few hardware swaps (no custom work needed), it might be able to run any stem you want.

    • @sunshinecycling
      @sunshinecycling 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sbccbc7471 I'm with you. As someone who needs a little extra modability to get my best position, these things you mentioned look great. The one piece setups look great on paper, but can make getting your best position ,or running your favorite bars, impossible. And the seat clamp reminds of a reversible clamp I had on an old Cervelo. These, plus the look of the bike, have me intrigued.

    Even if you have the cash or even if you can afford the Ultegra I checked delay and it was 18 months (for major european importer in France - after-sale market). Also, nobody is going to order any brand bike just to get dura ace quickly (at least they shouldn't).
    In my case, I ended up getting Campag Chorus 12 speed, comes in mechanical, is a good price, looks pretty nice overall, greater gear ranges on offer, a bit heavier but most important it is AVAILABLE. I do like the dura ace, and its a very balanced review here but launching a product that you cannot acquire unless all planets happen to be aligned is a failed launch in reality. This scarcity is not a short term issue. You have to think - what if you need a replacement part due to an accident or whatever - good luck? Looks like it will be generally available when SRAM and campag have their own next gen out.
