The best way I ever saw Toe described, "They're one of the rare bands, where the Drums are the main instrument."
In my opinion it’s less about the drums being the main instrument and more about the tension between the shy melody/harmony and the intense drums

Toe is mainly an only instrumental band, which occasionally invites a vocalist for a song or two. But where there isn't any singer, their main lead or "vocalist" for a lack of better term is the drummer.
Normally in an instrumental band, the lead is a melodic instrument such as a piano or guitar. Not with Toe, you can see even in this song the drummer is the one who filled up the empty space, where the guitar mainly becomes a supporter. In some other songs, the bass also steps up too, and they do call and respond but with bass and drum pretty cool stuff
this band is like heavensent as a beginner bassist

YO WHAT! I was not expecting you to listen to one my favorite song of all time. Toe is seriously one incredible group of players.
It's fun to see Toe falling into the mainstream, been one of my favorite bands for years, I'm glad that they're having more (well deserved, I'd add) notoriety. I appreciate this
i wish they were more mainstream 😅 i found them in 2006 with their "new instrumentality album" because i was big into Shugo Tokumaru and they were lumped together on iTunes.
i was in a math rock band a decade ago (in seattle as well!) and it was just a small community there as far as we knew. friend still plays the same kinda music, though i've went in a different direction; but the only time i hear about toe these days is when looking at sonny boy stuff.
Toe is pretty incredible, although I think my favorite song of theirs is a from the Sonny Boy anime OST; "Sonny Boy Rhapsody". Part of my love for that song is due to how brilliantly the show uses it, but I think there's no denying that the song itself is excellent. A little bit more simple than Goodbye, but ridiculously catchy and beautiful. My only problem with that song is it's not on Spotify, lol.

Duuude I can't believe you're reacting to this! Found this band in highschool when the sound manager at a venue my band was playing at was playing them over the speakers. They've became one of my favorite bands since then. This was the song that got me into them

They’re the perfect blend of energy, vibe, groove, emotion, chill, and meditative layering that’s just so fun to listen to in pretty much any mood. Nostalgic, sad, playful, hopeful, so many feelings one can take from any of their songs. Some are harder, some are more chill electronic-y, some are nice n acoustic. But they all have the heart that is Toe. Sick band, really glad you checked ‘em out.

Toki Asako usually does lots of funk stuff, so I was surprised to hear such gentle instrumentation in this song
I want to add that this performance is 1 hour and 40 minutes into a 2+ hour show :) (the whole thing released on DVD, called "Cut DVD" highly recommend it all).
This performance by Toe is one of the most passionate / well performed I have ever seen. I enjoyed your break down of it!

ohh shit im a massive fan of toe, wasn't expecting a reaction on them but awesome to see. some other great songs by them are 'sonny boy rhapsody' (which is actually what i discovered them from, one of my favourite insert songs of all time), long tomorrow and two moons. they give the drummer so much freedom to just go off its amazing.

Sonny Boy Rhapsody is a recent song by them that featured not so long ago, also their first song featured in anime. It's also very unique and has great vibes to it.

Because the drums feel like there at the "bottom" (or perhaps the core) of music, I think chaotic drums underneath ostinatos and chill stuff captures the feeling of a complex roller coaster of thoughts or feelings that are internal and not shown on the surface.
Toe is an amazing math/post rock band, they have influenced a lot of Math rock bands
Instrumental done right. They actually tell a story and it's the minor variations in the repetative bars that make it so engaging. Every instrument gets a chance to stray from the core which keeps me coming back.

I think you should check out delete insert they’re a small time band that don’t make any music anymore but they have one of the most talented drummers I’ve ever heard. If you’d like to check them out some of their best songs are chess and also this too shall pass

yo Tony, whenever you do another big anime reaction you should definitely check out Vegeta's Super Saiyan theme by Bruce Faulconer. It fucking slaps (I'd recommend a more extended version since some versions are only a minute). I recommend Friedrich habetler's cover of it since it's just as sick as the original in my opinion

music director must be an american thing. Talent is talent and no one needs a music director
I assume you have no experience in performing music. The term "Music Director", aka "MD" is a completely normal position globally. I have worked with other music directors from all over the world that have the same title with similar roles. It's not an "American thing". Let me elaborate for you.
Think of the conductor of a band or orchestra or more specifically the MD in a pit setting for a musical. Think of anyone that is in charge of leading a music ensemble or show design and handling multiple musicians. That is the MD position. Speaking of that position, that is what I do as a career. Heavy in MD as well as music education teaching beginning musicians. Maybe research before automatically assuming negative intent?
