Just got back from Rome/Naples! We were there Feb 3-11, and it really was the PERFECT time to go! No crowds at all, weather was just a tad on the chilly side but with jackets we were just fine. Plus, that led us to one of our favorite parts of the trip... the cioccolata calda!! We still had plenty of gelato, too, but the hot chocolate and pastries were a daily ritual. Anyway, your videos were an amazing help in our planning process. Thank you so much!!
That's great! You did choose a wonderful time to visit. And February is cold but manageable. We don't tend to get arctic temps even in winter! Thanks so much for letting me know you find my videos helpful!
We loved Rome and Florence (and other areas) in February. The best Valentine's of our lives! We've been there a couple of times in July, very hot and crowded but still enjoyed it very much. The absolute worse time for us was August. The heat and hordes of people were way too much. We will never go there again in August! But we would definitely go again in winter or early spring.
Yes, for many people, July and August are when they can come and then often, they say never again. So as I mentioned, if you CAN choose, then winter or early spring is a great option! Glad to hear you were able to enjoy a quiet Valentine's Day in Rome and Florence!
Our 2023 Feb trip to Italy was fantastic. We had great weather - chilly but still clear skies. Accom prices were reasonable. Queues not bad with a some planning. Thanks for all your advice over the years
Yes, February is excellent, especially if you are not here on a busy weekend (Free Sunday, Six Nations Rugby match, Carnival). Glad you got to enjoy it! I am currently basking in Rome in freezing January because I love this light and how quiet it is. Don't get me wrong, after what we went through with the pandemic, we needed tourism to come back, and come back it did! But now that it's back, I can relish these quiet times again. Thanks for watching and for your kind words!
This info is very helpful, thank you, consice straight.❤
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kind comments!
Elyssa, we followed your advice and arrived in Italy at the end of November. Florence first then to Vietri sul Mar and Naples, and on to Catania. We had plans to stay for over a week in Rome before leaving for home. Short days, but it was a good time to come visit. Thank you. After the first two weeks my body said it was time to stop, so we will come back for Rome another time, wiser and rested, lol.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for letting me know you found my advice helpful! It sounds like you had a wonderful trip. I hope you'll come back again!
I’ve been coming every February…partly to escape New England winter..but this year came before Christmas. Oh my! I was flabbergasted at how crowed it was. But like magic the dat after Epiphany, things calmed down. BTW I took your tips on Santa Marinella and the Keymaster tour. The tour was a once in a lifetime experience. So many thanks.😊
Yes, agreed, February is a great time to visit as long as it's not on a crowded weekend. And yes, as you discovered, Christmas in Rome and Florence is really busy, but as soon as the Epiphany is over, it quiets down A LOT. So nice to hear you enjoyed both Santa Marinella and also the Key Master tour! Thanks so much for letting me know you find my advice helpful!
Thanks for the info! I’ve been to Rome in January and it was wonderful. Weather was similar to here in Hilton Head.
Thanks for watching! Yes, it's my favorite secret time to walk around and enjoy Rome. Glad you got to enjoy it this way!
Thank you for this!!! We were in Rome,Florence and Venice in March ‘23 after coming from Germany. Needless to say, we had to really adjust our wardrobe and the cities were still really crowded 😢
This video came just in time because I’m planning a return trip for the end of the year or ‘25 and don’t know when to book to avoid the crowds. ❤
Thanks for watching! Yes, March has started to get much busier in recent years than it used to be. Try coming in very early March and you might find it slightly less crowded than mid- or late March!
In the middle of booking my trip now for February 2024! Cannot wait ;)

I've been to Rome in July, late May, and the first week in November. May 2 years ago was the worst temperature wise. November last year was like a British summer. 4 days at 20c and dry. 3 days rain but still mild. It's the 3rd week of April this year to catch Romes' birthday as a birthday present for my brother. Yes, I love Rome.
Hi Lorna! Yes, I know you are a romaphile like so many of us :) Even when it's not nice weather or full of tourists, we still love it. Ah you will love visiting Rome on its birthday. A lot happens, including my favorite phenomenon, the arc of light inside the Pantheon!

P.S. I don't know when I discovered your channel. 2019, or before. Your hubby was in more videos back then.
In 2021 (?), I didn't see him and was concerned for his health - so glad to have seen him recently
Thanks so much! Yes, I plan to publish some more videos this year about my life in Rome and why I moved here, etc. Alessandro has been in a few videos, but usually it's been ad hoc, like when we were filming during the pandemic, or during a trip to Turin or Florence. Thanks for being concerned about him! I'll try to get him to join me for some more videos :)

We’re planning our first trip to Italy for beginning to mid October! By the way, cute hat 😀
I hope you will have a wonderful visit. Just brace yourself for crowds! And thanks for your compliment about my hat. I got it at a lovely hat shop in Turin when we were there one winter, and it's my favorite!
Haha…I’m one of the tourists that came in the winter. Was just in Rome last week and now in London touring the British streets. You have to get up early to go site seeing and do the early tours to get the nice photos. It’s been an adventure and I’ve learned a lot on my first solo trip. Winter ain’t easy, but it’s doable.
Great! Yes, you have fewer hours in the day to enjoy sunlight, but one of the points I was trying to make is how special it is to sightsee when the sun goes down. For example, the Pantheon closes at 6:30/7PM year round so if you go late in the day, you will be inside when it's dark out, and it's a whole different feeling. Glad you got to enjoy Rome and London in quiet winter!
We were in Rome and Florence last week and it was great!
In Florence there were not that many tourists, it wasn’t overcrowded at all. But I think it was like that because it was really cold and windy.
But in Rome on the other hand there were a lot of people. I’ve visited Rome also in June and it was somehow similar. All the streets were extremely overcrowded in the evening, I didn’t expect that in January.
But if we speak about the lines to get the ticket to Colosseum, then yes it was way faster as it was in summer.
Yes, sometimes in winter, it can be lopsided. You think a random Tuesday in January will be quiet but there are crowds, but then you go to the Vatican on a Sunday morning and it's quiet. Either way, winter is still the best for enjoying Rome and Florence where crowds are concerned. They are still way smaller than in the spring, summer, and fall! And yes, as you saw, the lines are shorter or nonexistent, too. Glad you got to enjoy it!
Just new to your channel, we will come on ist week of May and trying to sort out our schedule, hope this month is ok. I'm planning to go here in Florence, Tuscany then back to Rome.
Welcome aboard! Thanks for following. I hope you have a wonderful time. Please check my playlists for more videos to help with your trip!
Yes my kids are currently in school and when we do take them out for a family vacation we get attitude from their teachers and we get letters stating that as parents we need to schedule our vacations when there’s no school. So we will be going to Italy during the start of summer vacation which is the last week of May.
We will visit Rome, Florence, Pisa and then Venice.
Yes, I find this is probably THE limiting factor for many who travel to Europe - trying to plan around a school calendar - whether it's kids in school or perhaps someone in the family teaches. And that means summer travelling when everyone else is. I hope you and your family will have a wonderful trip to Italy - just brace for crowds!
In early October only the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi, and Vatican were insanely busy. Oh Trastevere on a Saturday night was bananas too.
Yes that’s what I mean. So many people don’t believe me when I say that October is the busiest month in Rome and Florence.
We went August 31st last year and it was horrendous. The heat stopped us from getting around so much, definitely going again in a colder month
Yes, I understand - August is hot and crowded in Rome and Florence. It's hard to enjoy your visit when it's that hot. The best thing to do in that case is to sightsee early in the day and then late in the afternoon, like after 5pm. But if you can come in a cooler or even winter month, I think you'll enjoy it so much more!
Two days ago (15 Jan) I emailed to get a Scavi tour reservation for the 26 Jan to 31 Jan time frame. Today I was confirmed for a 26 Jan tour! I’ve been trying to get a spot for years. Low season travel can indeed pay off big, even at the last minute.
That's fantastic! And goes to my point - winter is really the best time to visit Rome! I hope you have a wonderful visit!
Hi, after our 2020 visit being cancelled, We are now planning our trip for Jan-Feb 2025. Not worried about the cold. We will come prepared👏Winter in my home town in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia can be very cold. Can’t wait😉.
So glad to hear your 2020 trip is finally on the horizon! There are still so many people whose trips were cancelled that year and who still have to reschedule. Glad you'll enjoy Italy in winter - my secret favorite time to visit! Enjoy!
Great.

Hi, great videos👌. I’m going to Vatican museum (not a tour) April 2nd at 16:00 (only time left). Do you think i will have time to get into St Peter’s basilica after this or should I try and queue before. I’m concerned I’ll have to spend all morning queuing to get in if I do it before.
Thank you for watching!I would suggest you visit Saint Peter's Basilica before your Vatican Museums visit. To avoid long lines, you could try coming really early, like when they open at 6:50 AM. Otherwise, you can expect to wait anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours in the long security lines.
WE are visiting smack in the middle of July for a huge family vacation. We had to go then as the kids need to go to school in August.

We usually visit in late October to Mid November….❤
That's a great time. It's still pretty nice weather and the crowds are starting to go down slightly.
Hi. Loving your videos. We are hoping to visit Florence and Rome in October 2025. I had the wrong idea thinking it would be less busy!! Also just found it it is jubilee year in 2025. I am hoping that it won't be so crowded that it will ruin our holiday. What do you think?
Thank you so much! Yes, I know many people hope/think October will be quiet, which is why it's not - everyone has the same idea! And believe me, the weather is at its loveliest (except for spring).
I plan to make a video about the upcoming Jubilee. In my video, I will be explaining how the Jubilee will last a whole year. There is not really one main event that happens so pilgrims coming for the Jubilee will come throughout the year. Also, they often stay in religious housing or in accommodations slightly outside the city center that can accommodate large groups.
The bottom line is that Rome is crowded now, and will be in 2025, but I do not believe it will be any more crowded then in such a way that it will impact your visit.
Carpe diem!
Very informative video. Im going march when march when spring first starts. Until early an April for 14 days. Is it still cold during this time? Can I wear sandals? I’m from Florida LOL. Cold for me is anything above 65. Ty!
Ah you will be here during Easter - prepare for crowds!
I'm from Florida also so I know what you mean. This is why I say that for many visitors, March, April, and sometimes even early May are not as warm as you'd think.

Yes but even the dates around Easter will be very busy. The week before Easter, Holy Week, can be much busier than the week after Easter. Just be prepared! But it sounds like a lovely trip. Enjoy! @@joelfortniteplayer9162

You also have to account for holiday seasons in Asia: late January through mid-February is the Lunar New Year period, early October is China's national week, and early May is China's Labor week. India's Diwali is in September or October. Really, there is low season anymore, maybe November, but I had several friends visit over Thanksgiving last year, and they commented it was really busy.
Are you saying it’ll be busy during Chinese new year? I thought they went to visit their own families during Chinese new year?
@jyc313 Wealthy families do trips abroad together nowadays, particularly to top tourist destinations.
Thanks, good to know. I'll be in Rome next week, and was hoping it'll be a bit quieter. Cheers. @@euroschmau
@jyc313 you'll be fine next week since the Lunar New Year is quite late this year, in mid-February. When I said late January to mid-February, I meant to say a range of time since it varies each year, much like Easter.
This is an excellent point. People travel when it's convenient to them, and for many, that means travelling around a school calendar. But as you say, there are a lot of holidays seasons in other parts of the world when people want to travel. Thanks for your detailed input!
We are also planning on visiting South Italy in the first week of November along with Rome & Florence. How is the scene in the South?
We have heard that the frequency of ferries for Amalfi, Capri etc is very less in November. It’ll be great if you could help us out
I'm not as familiar with Southern Italy, especially when it comes to ferries during November. I invite you to visit our new website, www.napleswise.com, and to subscribe to our free newsletter there.

Hi there, how about first week of December? Please suggest. Thanks in advance
It can be busy because of the December 8 holiday and in Spain, December 6 is a holiday so sometimes we get a lot of Spanish tourists of those dates fall near a weekend. But it should be a little quieter than peak season.
On our April 24-26 visit, is it imperative that folks visit the Vatican (Sistine Chapel) first thing in the morning or could we get away with going after 9 or 10am? We do not think we could endure two hour lines. We could book a tour if it could help with timing.
While Rome tourism has gotten even busier recently, April / May are still really peak season, and if you visit the Vatican at 9 or 10Am you will be contending with huge crowds.
I suggest taking the Pristine Sistine tour with Walks of Italy. You will go in right at 8AM without waiting in a long line, you will have someone to guide you, and best of all, you will be able to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel into Saint Peter's Basilica, which, in my opinion, is worth the price of the tour alone.
I’m going now on March 19 right before Easter which scared me because I know that’s probably a big celebration there
To be honest, Holy week, the week just before Easter, is also very busy. And in fact, this February is already much busier than it was even last February - so just prepare for crowds and enjoy!
I cant believe it, Elyssa is human! There is no bad time to visit Rome or Florence! Have been 11x, all seasons and Oct is best. 3 star hotels very reasonable(cheaper than 2 stars in peak season), and fewer crowds. Also, when in Florence the Uffizi is a must must!
Yeah I’m hoping it’s clear I think there’s no bad time to visit either. I said it’s winter but of course that’s my secret favorite time to be in Rome! 🤫

See you in Rome Feb. 13 - 29! We're testing out your "low-crowd" theory which we've heard from many other locals on previous visits.
I hope it will be! As I mentioned in the video, lately towards the end of February, especially on weekends, it can be more crowded than it used to be - we have Six Nations Rugby, Valentine's Day, and Carnival. But mid-week, I think you'll find it less crowded. I hope you have a fabulous time in Rome!
There's never a bad time to visit Rome, but I generally visit in winter. The best time to visit is when the Italians are celebrating--anything. Christmas, New Year, Befana, Easter, Carnevale. You get to eat all the special foods that are prepared only for that particular celebration, but please don't tell anyone or it will be overcrowded all year long. 🤫
Ah yes, of course, the food aspect! I touched on that on this video regarding carnival which is around the corner. I love the sugary frappe and castagnole, which you only find this time of year!
The authors of guides still write that spring and autum aren't overcrowded, that there is the best time for visiting.. Maybe aren't overcrowded comparing with peak seaon :)...Maybe it was true 25 years ago.
Yes, I know! This is why I have to beg people to believe me. I think you are right that this was true maybe 25 years ago, but definitely not any longer!
So many there now best time to visit is 2AM!
I love this! You made me laugh out loud! :D

I missed when is the best time, you were speaking in circles, confusing video.
I meant for this video to showcase that winter is my favorite time to visit because there are fewer people, I find the light beautiful, I think it's cool to visit the sites like the Pantheon later in the day when it's already dark outside, there are no bugs etc. It was meant to be tongue in cheek. I also described how the best time where weather is concerned is spring and fall, but those are also the most crowded times. Sorry you found my video confusing.
@Romewise don't apologize. Your video was informative and not confusing at all. Some people just don't get tongue in cheek. My husband and I will be in Rome again next December. Ciao!
