  • These generators are not in good shape. One had no compression and missing the carburetor and air box. The other is complete, but was let outside for many years. Will they run?

      At the very least, you need to open the valve covers to adjust valve clearance. Recommendations vary among engine manufacturers as to how often this needs to be done but all engines will need this eventually if not sooner.

    The idle circuit in the carb contributes to the run circuit. If it won’t idle right it won’t run right.

    • @wryanddry2266
      @wryanddry2266 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is why it was hunting. James, did you run a pick or wire through the idle jet? I'm thinking that the ultrasound bath didn't get it clean, especially if the outside of the carb was dirty going into the bath. I wouldn't have been so ready to replace the carb.

    I have to agree with you that those 90s Generac Generators were built to last. I've reworked at least 6 of them now from the 4000, 7000, 7550, 8000, and a 12,000 which I kept for myself. I haven't run into anything that was not expected when I got them. They were all repairable (within my limited talents and a little common sense. LOL). I would recommend them to anyone wanting an older dependable generator. "Oldies but goodies".

    If it has an oil filter then it must have a pump, most small horizontal don't have that, very unique

    • @throwbo
      @throwbo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not only does it have a pump but because it is pressure lubricated the low oil shutdown is based on an oil pressure switch and not a float. Non-running due to pressure switch failure is another common failure mode for these engines. On paper, having pressure lubrication and an oil filter is a good thing but given that there are millions and millions of small engines without them that run for many thousands of hours they don't really appear to add all that much in real life.

    We bought a 6500 genny, I think it was around 6-700.00, in the early 90's, when Generac was a company that we had never heard of and Honda genny's were, (the very expensive) king. We bought it to use at the houseboat so it was in a damp environment all the time, cuz we were on the river a lot, spring, summer, fall, and winter,, sometimes weeks at a time. Something went wrong within a week, I can't remember what, so it went to the repair shop under the warranty. We didn't have a problem getting, nor maintaining in touch with Generac or finding a warranty-work repair shop. It was there for about 3 weeks. We were glad that we had it repaired and didn't return it to Home Depot cuz the same (factory defect, I guess)problem happened to a lot of them, according to the repair guy. That Generac genny worked with no problems at all for the next 10 years. It was fine even when some fool checked the gasoline level with a Bic lighter and caught it and his jacket on fire. The only damage done was to the fools jacket. Nowadays, I have seen reviews on a wide range of products covered by what appears to be GREAT warranties, but the people are either waiting on the phone forever and not getting satisfactory answers or having the warranty company flat out telling them that there was nothing that they can do, even when it should be covered. This was on home appliances. Some of them never answered the phone calls at all.

    Jim, Rance here. I have a generac xl4000 generator. Have had it since 1999. I keep very good care of it, drain tank and carb and change oil and filter and leave gas cap open to allow any small any of gas to evaporate and moisture to escape.. I agree with you this is one of the best generators I have seen. have put hundreds of hours on it, uses no oil, starts by the 2nd pull. I live on Ms coast (hurricane and storm central). I was proud to see you with these generators. Whoever gets it will more than get there moneys worth. Hope they realize what they have and treat it as I would.. I’ve only seen one other gen set you’ve had that I saw was comparable. That was the Yamaha blue gen e-start. I think it was 5000 watt.

    The General 4000x is the exact generator I bought a Craftsman 4200 watt in 1998. You inspired me to pull it out after it sat for a year since I started it. It started on the first pull and ran perfectly under load as well. It has been a great generator other than some surging and running only on half choke some years back. I put in a carb rebuild kit and it has run perfect since. It's interesting that you use the choke when running out the gas. I just shut off the gas supply but in the future will do the choke also. This old generator ran for 5 days non-stop from our hurricane. It powered my fridge, my small chest freezer, several lights, a fan, my big screen TV and DVD player without problem. I'm pretty sure it was maxed out power wise, but it worked well. It also did the same for another 5 days when Texas had that prolonged power outage several winters ago. I hope it continues to work well. I do change the oil and filters.

    I’m looking forward to the rebuild of the rough looking generator. I too am impressed with the fact the 4000XL series has an oil filter. I purchased a Generac 6500XP about 5 years ago and while I like the generator, it would have been great if it had an oil filter. Thank you for great video.

    • @johnhardasnails7464

      Be careful about getting a generac 4000xl as not all of them come with an oil filter. My dad bought one in 1999 and it didn’t have the filter. I ordered the filter bracket assembly and gasket and am going to put it in this summer. I ran that generator back in 2004 and 2017 for about 72 hours each time and changed the oil after the 3 days. I have another 8000watt 1989 sears generator I got from a relative that required a new regulator back in 2014. That one is great as its twin cylinder and very heavy with an oil filter. It even handles the lights ,refrigerator and central air conditioner 42000 btu . Just not electric stove and water heater. In a pinch I can turn the ac off and run the water heater. I have a propane grill with side burner for cooking if needed or use one top burner in the house on the stove. The 8kw uses 1 gallon gas an hour and the 4kw uses about 1/2 gallon an hour. So both are pretty economical to run during an outage.

    James, I have been going through your videos and think they are excellent. I have learned a lot -- I have done a few small engines, but never the generator side - which I now need. You have really helped me grow my understanding of portable generator mechanics - measuring the Hz and Load was by itself hugely helpful - seems obvious now that I know, but just didn't think of it - your observations of issues by subtle changes to engine sound and idle behavior are also very insightful for me. Please keep it up, content much appreciated!

    Hi James, have you thought about getting a bigger / more powerful ultrasonic cleaner? I upgraded to an eBay unit, 6 Liters, 3 transducers, built-in heating. It's brought every single carb dumped into it back to life in perfect working order. I use Chem-dip, 50C temperature, 30 minute cycle. Makes quite a bit of noise when working!! Can't help but think most of the carbs you replace can be brought back to life.
    Otherwise, cheers! Really enjoy your content. Thank you!

I have a 4000xl and 4000exl plus a 5500xl . I want to replace the valve keepers and don’t mind buying the whole kit to do it. One keeper on the 5500 came loose like in your video but wasn’t broken so I just reseated it. Now I know from your video that the design is flawed and especially want to replace the 4000xl keepers as that was originally my father’s with low hours I used in two storms. I watched the video again and saw the part number OD24890ESV this time

    The valves coming apart like that is a common issue on these machines, I owned a few at one time, There are 2 versions as well, one with the oil filter one without, The one with the filter needs an oil change every 25 hrs and without a filter its the standard 50 hrs for oil, the little oil pressure switches are also known to go bad

    I had one years ago that had that same retainer issue James . I found they had a recall on them as well as the fuel tank . I have another one in the back yard with a broken retainer but I need to get the kit and pull the head so I can put the different style valves in it like I did the last one .. I like those Generators they work well and put out good power .. Thanks , ENJOYED !!

    U.K. Excellent video as always. It does no harm to change the oil at least once a year even if the hours are low. It's also a good idea to fit a good magnet to the drain plug - if you can. If you can't then put a magnet on the end of the drain plug outside it should magnetise the plug a bit. I do like your videos James, great stile and from a 'Limey' that's unusual to an American. Keep well and don't forget your jab. I've had two and feel like a new woman. Regards - John.

    I usually have good results from clone carbs. I got one a couple days ago for 7hp B&S on a Craftsman tiller. Idle jet too large. Over fueling. No adjustments. Runs poorly.
    The old carb was oxidized nearly to death. Serious white crusts from sitting with water and old fuel in it for years. Frozen needle. With much work, got the old carb working. but not perfect. Still working on what I can do for this tiller.

    • @throwbo
      @throwbo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you got it on Amazon, just send it back and try again. Eventually you will get a good one. If you really want to get into it, you can solder the idle jet shut and then drill it out to a smaller size.

    • @fegolem
      @fegolem 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@throwbo It was a kit that included a new air filter and hoses. All for right at $20. Not worth the time and effort to send back. The solder idea sounds good. Might try that. Thanks.

      Yes, this was probably made in early May. Have a few in the queue, which is probably a good thing. Have not found a generator in about 3 weeks. Some weeks I get more then I can handle. Also back to work full time. I used to publish twice a month, but working from home due to COVID allowed me to publish weekly. At some point might need to scale back. Most I find on eBay and Marketplace.

    James, were you ever able to remove and clean the emulsion tube? Although ultrasonic cleaners do a great job, they don't work well when passages are completely clogged. I have a high-quality sweep frequency ultrasonic cleaner, a SharperTek XPD360-6L, but I always use carburetor cleaner, brushes, and shop air first. By the way, thanks for your suggestion: using a tea ball infuser for small parts.

    Really enjoy the 2 v 1 videos. These from the same owner? I comment you for trying the save that carb. Clone Carbs for Clone engines always work well for me.
    I wonder if the keeper broke bc people don’t think idle down/slow down the generator before cutting it off.

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the same owner originally. I have a contact locally who flips a lot of equipment and he had these generators. Not something he wanted to deal with. The Honda clone carbs always work for me on Honda clone engines. Not sure what caused the failure. The valve retainer lasted nearly 25 years, but from what I can tell it is a common problem. Thinking poor design or materials.

    Hi James, what if the generator runs great for about a minute or two then dies, no idle control and no load. It does the exact same thing with the oil pressure switch disconnected. I have fuel flow and I just installed the same carb you installed. Wondering if the governor or something needs to be adjusted.
