Everybody is free to get fun as he wants, but as owner of an AUTHENTIC VW golf (aka rabbit in USA) mk 1 GTI, I would NEVER treat this way my loved car. No man, i think this is not the way to love and respect a 40 years old car. And I keep silence about this poor car's body, still with rust, w/o finishes and w/o rear bumper...
@@mattiaruffo As the owner of numerous pieces of junk, I can tell you that car would've rusted out in someone's back yard and eventually scrapped. This is a more fitting outcome for the car.
@@dodgeplow As I wrote, everybody gets fun as it fits to him, but I rather would look for original missing parts to bring a car at pristine condition. Since I gave her constant care, my mk I is nearly perfect and reached a total of more than 300.000 km (that's a lot in my small country!) and I still drive her with full satisfaction, because I'm driving a REAL and ORIGINAL piece of history of motorization (still with the whole pack of hp's of course).
Makes me miss my silver 84’ GTI. Loved my 2005’GTI and my current 2015’ GTI. Neither compare to that Mk1. Brings back some great memories. Awesome video!
Reminds me of my old 1983 rabbit gti. She went from full interior to gutted with strut bars and neuspeed parts everywhere, lower suspension with ronal r8 and she looked hot.. Had the scricco seats that sat lower in the car. Man that thing was great times. Sucked in bay area traffic but find me and open twisty road and I'm gone. She was fun until she tried to burn me up ...hahah old gal great times.
Major props to you Sir!!!! VDub owner (MKIV 1.8T Jetta) and lover of VWs, sending you much respect and Blessings from NY! Can't wait to see what else you have in store for the old gal. I wished I had a garage large enough and the knowledge/know-how to do half of the work you did on my car.
j2thar1st thank you very much :) . Lots of research and the want to get it done :) . This was all done in my single car garage with some help from good friends
Nat covino All the time and effort definitely shows. I know just dealing with wiring harnesses are painful and tedious work as is let alone building/restoration of a vehicle from the ground up. My 1.8T doesn't see the road as much as I'd like it to these days because my list of "things to do" keeps increasing and funds are definitely not up to par to get it done. Hopefully next year I'll be able to knock out some of the major things and put another 230k on the original motor/trans/chassis. I'm subbing to keep up-to-date with this project of yours and see the additional features you plan on doing. Best of luck with everything and salute to you and your friends for a job well done!
I used to own an '84 GTI with a motor out of a VW Corrado. It was the G60 Supercharged motor. Buddy of mine had a Corrado with the VR6 motor. Zero to 60 we would pretty much tie but the g60 would pull away when it hit 65 or 70. Loved driving both of them but definitely the GTI was my favorite VW ever!
My 1978 Rabbit C and my 1984 GTI taught me how to work on cars. You had better be able to turn a wrench if you want to own one. It made owning Japanese built Toyotas seem like a dream later on in life. How many late nights I had trying to get my Volkswagens ready to drive to work the next morning.. More than I can count. Fun cars when they are running right. I can't imagine what that VR6 would be like in that car. I am guessing insanely fun to drive.
Very coool love to see these older Rabbits pulled from the potential dump, I've done many myself and they look so pathetic just crying out for new life, have done many myself, only put them on the track and they act like they've finally found their niche and second life. They still have that fantastic stance. Raced several of these in road racing and still have a standing track record here in Florida. You're not only very patient but quite skilled and creative, that nest of wires gave me a headache just looking at it, well done..
Have quite a push though does it? I had a VR6 GTI so I feel yah and it had more rear end weight, gonna upgrade the brakes? Can't imagine trying to stop that with the OEM rear drums and small front disks, you have a brake doner unless you dumped it already? I designed the only fully adjustable, on the car, rear sway bar for these back in the day and quite sure it'd make a massive difference in handling for your car since it has so much weight up front. Sadly though I only managed to sell a few, and the least amount of time picked up by any driver was still 2 seconds per lap, some much more. My wife was diagnosed with cancer, so I had to suspend my life to be her caregiver, eventually she passed away and I never really went back to it full time after that so never got the bar off the ground either, they both died so to speak. I can give you some really great tips to make it handle better if you're interested? Was told by several people (other VW drivers) that they could never hang with me through the corners.
Just seeing this for the first time. Sweet ride! I have an 80 Scirocco and was planning on a vr6 swap. Tons of work but the reward must just priceless!!
Total respect, your all round skills as a fabricator and auto electrician are amazing. Got any threads to your build at all. Looking at putting a 2.8 24v V6 into my caddy mk1
I wonder how much faster this rabbit GTI is with the Volkswagen corrado engine in it? I used to own a black with blue interior VW GTI 1984 model I sold it 1991 I owned it for almost 4 years the fantastic car. For some reason I always thought about getting another one but what this guy did to this car was pretty amazing. I'd like to see how fast it goes. I know it’s 3 years later, amazing work bud! Seriously considering this in my caddy as I can’t see anything else pulling it around that I’d be content with. If you don’t mind in regards to the built axles. What was the final compressed and extended length with the engine semi-centered from the passenger side? Fabbing the engine brackets and such are within my skillsets however balancing the axles as you did on a lathe isn’t, yet!

Nat covino caan you heelp me, i have the vr6 engine with almost everything for swap in mk1,but mounting :/ if they work properly, give me some more info about processing, if you are able to make the new ones i can buy from you for a price

The AAA prefix in the Mk3 does not require a coded key .
How do I open the hood? I can't find the lever
Beautiful.

Want to sell it?
eltdogo not yet :)
I got an '83 GTI VR6 swap project for sale if interested. I got everything to do the swap.
Yeeeeeaaaa
