Which is always a shame. If it makes you feel better, the 1953 adaptation of The Tell Tale Heart was found in some guy's attic a few days ago, unaware of what it was or remembering that he had it in his possession after buying it from a junk shop in the 80s.

@@LostArchivist If that's the case, the film is likely in the public domain given the amount of time that has passed. So legally, if it's within their estate, it would depend on if they intend on releasing it.
RIP to all the films that were lost in the MGM vault fire of 1965.
There was also another vault fire at Warner Brothers or Universial in the 1930s or 1940s too. I believe the MGM one was the most devastating as far as what we lost goes, and it took the lives of at least two employees.

I find lost media upsetting for the fact that one of my biggest fears is everything I've made being lost forever, whether due to misplacement, natural disaster, or people just throwing it away when I die because they didn't deem it as important as I have. I can't imagine the feeling of having something you put effort into being just callously thrown away or accidentally destroyed like this.
Yeah dude, imagine for example the philosopher Zeno, he created Stoicism and all of his works is lost, the philosopher created the second most influential school of thought and we know almost nothing from him. Al least he did not minded this happening to him.

You think remakes are unnecessary now, back in the 30s they had remakes coming of movies that weren't even 3 years old yet.
Tbh, though, you wouldn't have been able to rewatch the films that were being remade because there was no home video.

I also want to point out that there are a lot of lost mummy films (14 to be exact). The earliest was at 1909 called la momie du roi.
A 1911 verison only has one production still. Theres one in france and one from 1923. The good news is that a 1918. German film has been found its called eyes of the mummy ma and is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. You can find it in on youtube and its on a channel called a touch of evil
There's _three_ from 1911, all titled _The Mummy_ ! There's also another 1909 film and one from 1910. The latter actually still exists today but the other 4 are gone.

I've wanted to see those movies ever since I saw James Rolfe's list of Top 10 Lost Horror Movies back in the day.
Considering their two of the most famous examples of lost movies that have a decent amount of stuff leftover to show it existed I'd say somewhere a copy or copies Exist.
Yeah, and truthfully one day they could be found. After all, both were massive hits in the U.S and I believe they're still out there. Surely somebody from the film industry would've wanted to have a copy. Like the take home prints with Phantom Of The Opera. There was so much popularity and praise at the time, it's hard to believe that none would survive the test of time.
It's funny that you mentioned Nosferatu as it very nearly became a lost film itself. Bram Stoker's widow was unhappy that a film adaptation of the Dracula story had been produced without her permission so she had every available copy destroyed. IIRC, only one print managed to survive and it is from this print that every other copy derives.
Makes me want to see a list of "Almost Lost Media" to learn of stories of media that nearly avoided becoming Lost Media.
And I don't mean by found Lost Media, I mean media that was never Lost
Instead of remaking horror movies that are very much available & rewatchable today (I'm looking at you, Rob Zombie), how about remaking these movies that have been lost to time? I for one would love to see a Golem Trilogy, produced & or directed by someone like Guillermo Del Toro.
I'd personally prefer if a Jewish filmmaker made it, considering it is one of the most famous pieces of Jewish folklore
@@hptwillightfan123 - Problem is too many Jewish filmmakers have been Hollywoodized a bit much & have lost a lot of their "Jewishness", imo. So long as they get a cinematographer/director of photography like Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, I think a director like Del Toro or Cuaron might actually work better. Mel Brooks could produce it thru his Brooksfilms Productions house like how he handled The Elephant Man.

Reel #2 of the 1915 Golem has been found in an archive in Buenos Aires, oddly enough, the same archive that had a copy of the full Metropolis. This reel, along with the already surviving footage, has been shown at various festivals.

I would say out of all the fandoms I’ve come across, I feel like the lost media community is the least toxic , no heated debates on what movie is better, no trolling , no excessive Celebrity worship , honestly just a lot of positivity. Everyone coming together and just trying to shed light on what is lost with the goal of having it be found . I admire that

I'm a member of that community. :) I know people who not only spend their time searching for lost films, but also restoring silent films, I have supported 15 Kickstarters to date for film restoration - some titles which were considered lost - it is a very enthusiastic community, and I love being a part of it.

Why does nobody remember the 1916 phantom of the opera

Some of us horror fans do. A cool factoid on the film is that the writer of that version is Greta Schröder, who co-starred in Nosferatu as Hutter's wife and had a hand in The Golem (1920).
I initially thought that that was what he was gonna talk about.
We horror fans know of the movie. I describe it as the longest broadway musical/horror film ever.
I remember both of them.

An update on phantom of the opera, the process of 2 cameras used is the same one used for 3d films, and some are trying to make a 3d version right now.
Also jorge forgot to update that "In the Mind of The Damned" has been found on December 24 2018. The director sent it to a random user through google drive. So, you could watch it for yourself.

Recently saw this man in my dreams! I had sleep paralysis for the first time when I saw him. I first saw this drawing 2 years ago, but forgot about him, so I don’t know why I just now saw him.
I was staying at a hotel with for a wedding that was out of my small suburban city.
It was Sunday, the day we were going to leave, and I had woken up earlier only for my mom to tell me she would wake me up in forty five minutes and that I could go back to sleep, which I happily did.
I fell asleep, which is surprising for me (sense I’m a insomnia patient) so this was already a red flag. Usually when I fall back asleep, I have nightmares.
I was back in my hotel room, but instead my room was dark. It looked how it did when I had awoken at 4:00 AM because *_insomniaaa_* (i fell back asleep and awoke again to have my mom tell me to go back to sleep)
I was laying on my back in bed (which I never do) and I couldn’t move, blink or speak.
This dream was incredibly realistic.
Suddenly, my sleepy peace was interrupted by someone (who looked like this man) on top of me screaming slurs and gibberish.
Maybe it wasn’t gibberish, and it was some other language? At the time, I was learning Norwegian, so maybe my brain made up some Norsk words? Idk
He was holding down my shoulders and he was not even 2 inches away from my face.
After what felt like hours of me horrified and him screaming, he turned very calm.
He then yelled loudly “45!”
What creeps me out is that, all of his words before were gibberish- and somehow he just now said that number clearly, the fact that my mom said 45, and that I’m not the only one whose “seen” this man.
I then jolted up as soon as he said 45.
Usually I wake up and lay there after a nightmare, but this time I flew up and began to cry.

I just realized this while watching this again; In Phantom of the Opera, the guy with the lantern might've come from the silent version, but possibly the title card is missing. A lot of times in silent films they'll have people talk, followed by a card popping up to show what's being said. I'm not sure why the card wouldn't be put in, since usually they'll recreate the title cards in cases of missing scenes, but it could be that they simply forgot or didn't realize that scene needed a title card. That's just my theory on the lantern man scene.

The colored scenes in Phantom of the Opera wasn't later colored, it came from the original. It has 17 minutes in Two-color Technicolor. It was one of the first movies with this color system. Only the masked-ball scene remains, the rest is lost

A lot of old movies in color have black and white photos so I’m pretty sure the werewolf movie is not lost and is just under a different title.
Sadly, The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) is not a lost film.

Something that's worth mentioning is that the events of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, as well as the firebombing campaigns of WWII meant that a huge number of Japanese films of the time are missing or lost altogether; there's an ongoing search for countless films from this era. One such pair of films which interests me quite a bit are "King Kong Appears in Edo" and "Japanese King Kong", or "Wakusei King Kong". These two films show that even as early as the 1930s, Japan was interested in trying to follow the trends of western cinema, even though it would be almost 30 years until King Kong finally appeared in a Japanese film which is still around today, 1962's "King Kong vs. Godzilla".
The fact that they’re lost is scarier than the actual films. It’s like a preview to what will happen to all of us someday
In my film class, we watched “ A Trip to the Moon” to compare older films to newer ones. Georges is honestly pretty cool with his films, even if its older, its still pretty cool! Very cool he has Lost Media too

James Rolfe (AVGN) attempting to explain phantom of the opera is one of my favorite videos. It has such an interesting and confusing backstory!
It is worth mentioning that The Terror was remade in 1938, although the remake isn't amazing either.

That film is a myth. It never existed.
I think there wasn't a thought to preserve most silent films because people were used to not being able to see something again once it was taken out of theaters as with most plays and musicals. There were very few people to appreciate and archive classic film until television and the home video market became a thing so most people were just concerned with the most current films of the time. That along with the precious metals in film and the cost of storage make it understandable why so much of it wasn't saved.
Early television shows had a similar fate because the low interest didn't justify the high cost of storage. You could do a whole video on the dumont television network, the oldest tv network in the us. Almost the entirety of their archives were allegedly dumped in the hudson river in the 1970's

Paul Naschy made a franchise of films called 'The Waldemar Daninsky' saga. They were all based around the same character who was a werewolf. [There are at least 5 movies in this series] It's very possible that the discontinued film was picked up years later, retitled, and with a new director and cast, and rewritten and re-marketed.

Another one … All American Massacre, the third and the last part of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre trilogy. As the movie wasn’t released other directors took advantage to make Texas Chainsaw a money making machine, spawning 7 horrible movies.

Well, this explains a LOT about the single color scene in my copy of Phantom of the Opera, which I got on one of those bargain price 50 movie packs of
mostly B-grade (and lower) stuff.
The scenes with color are from the original 1925 version.

Once I saw a Silent Version of Phantom of the Opera but the first scene had sound. I never found this version again, but it was amazing. I loved the creepy, dark dialog! The rest of the movie was completely silent.
I've seen that version as well. It's probably a hybrid of the 1925 and 1929 version.
I love the fact that one of the theories for This Man was that the face was that of God himself. That's absolutely hilarious to me. It reminds me of that meme that says "Scientists say this is the last image you see before you die. Could this be God himself?"
I never imagined that This Man was going to be a movie. I would've loved to have seen it. I hope the premise will be picked up again one day.
More Info: The Golem movies just so happen to be directed, and written by the same guy who also played the title character.
It was also the first horror trilogy, the first horror parody ( _The Golem and the Dancing Girl_ ) and I believe the first official remake (the 1920 film). Up to that point it was usually literary sources being adapted almost yearly rather than actual "remakes" of an existing film.
Nosferatu was once thought to have been lost forever but pirating saved it. I'm not saying people should pirate maliciously or anything but sometimes it does go to show these people sometimes respect the work more than the creators themselves
Technically, that's incorrect.
When Bram Stoker's estate took the makers to court for copyright infringement, they won and one of the orders from the ruling was that all copies of the film were to be destroyed. At the time, we thought all prints and negatives were. However, the film had moved across Europe and parts of North America by this point, and one was ultimately found in the hands of a private collector a few decades later - if I remember correctly. So the version of the film we've seen is the only copy that is believed to have survived.
@@SirChubbyBunny Nosferatu was never lost, and in fact it was re-released in Germany in the 1930's under an new title, "The 12th Hour", with some new (talking) scenes added, end this print also exists at the Cinémathèque Française. And I saw the classic, original version when I was 15 at the Cinémathèque Française, in 1955, il a beautiful sepia print. Often, movies that are "lost" in America are in fact in European archives. Take for instance the 1932 RKO version of "The Monkey's Paw", directed by Wesley Ruggles, and (uncredited) Ernest B. Schoedsack. Apparently the US archives only have a fragment of this film. But it was released in France in 1936, dubbed, and a friend of mine has a 16mm print of it. From this print he made a numerization, so I have this "lost" movie on a DVD-r... Of course it's spoken in French, but it could be re-dubbed in English as the New York City archives have the complete dialogue in print !

Speaking of lost Phantom of the operas, there is also supposedly a completely different silent Phantom of the opera film released 9 years earlier in 1916 that is lost in it's entirety with only some promotional artwork still existing

The original ending of 1925 Phantom of the Opera is the holy grail of the phandom. It would have made this film the closest adaptation of Leroux's book.

Well done especially the information on "The Phantom of the Opera"
The same fire that destoryed London After Midnight also destroyed the original negatives to all the MGM cartoons, including the Tom And Jerry cartoons.
Yup, pretty much everything made before 1965 was destroyed, and I think that fire in particular killed two people.
This is super interesting! I was kind of surprised that The Head Of Janus (Der Januskopf) wasn't included, given how famous some of its cast were (it starred Conrad Veidt, and Bela Lugosi was in a supporting role) *and* the fact that it was directed by FW Murnau, the guy who directed Nosferatu. Plus, it was one of the earlier adaptations of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde...
Can you tell how much I want to be able to watch this movie LOL.....It would have been amazing.....
I think more than half of Murnau's work is lost these days, which is a damn tragedy on top of his short lived career after he was killed in a car crash in the 1930s.

There was also another silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera which pre dates any of the universal ones..it was from I want to say 1919 or 1920 and was from Europe (possibly German). There is little known about it but is believed that there may be a few prints in the hands of private owners and it was closer to the book.
I swear private collectors can be so good and bad at some times. Like they can find lost movies and release it to the public or they just keep it to themselves

I absolutely *LOVE* the Phantom of the Opera
My theory with the Lantern fellow speaking in the silent film version was that, when the reel of film was sent to cinemas, a vinyl record or cylinder was sent along that had whatever the man was saying on it, and it would be played alongside the film. That, or a script was sent with it and a voice actor or local in the area would read it out, and that these had simply been lost over time as well.
