The show was better than it had any right to be, with the Film studio basically dropping huge narrative bombs for the writers to deal with, a shoestring budget and the fact that they can't really use a plot or a character that's already in the MCU, it's a miracle that it lasted this long.
Also, compared to the shows we got now, AoS is a friggin masterpiece.

I'd never disagreed so much with Nerdstalgic. SHIELD "rebooting" itself was part of what was amazing about it. It was never stale, it was never the same. I tuned in every week because I legitimately couldn't believe the places the show had gone to and the wild storylines it committed to. This show was fantastic.

Once the show took its own path. It became way better imo. The restrictive nature of trying to keep in line with the movies would have probably killed the show. Also imo the whole dynamic of having a different theme each season at the time kept things fresh imo. For example; The framework story line was the peak of the show.

Couldn't disagree more! 🤣 While the show definitely has its ups and downs, Agents of Shield has some of the most riveting character drama in the entire MCU, seasons 3 and 4 especially, the 4,722 hours and the framework story arcs are both incredible. • @JeremyTepper
    @JeremyTepper ปีที่แล้ว +151

If viewed as the initially pitched MCU tie in show, then yes it may be disappointing. But AOS was able to find its niche with its great cast and really fun sci-fi premises every season. Having to stay up to date with all the MCU phase 2-3 projects would've really dragged the show down, instead they are able to focus on what works for their medium while staying loosely in the MCU continuity. I would say Season 4 is top tier Marvel/superhero TV, up there with Daredevil and S1 of Jessica Jones.
Additionally the show was expected to be cancelled after Season 5, so they wrote that season finale as a series finale. Seasons 6-7 are shorter and disconnected because they were not supposed to happen at all, so the show approached them one season at a time.

Okay damn. The movies didn't do anything to influence the show after season 1. They did their own thing, and it was beautiful. I can't believe you guys would call the show 'bland'. I too recently rewatched AoS incorporated into a rewatch of the entire MCU in chronological order. and I thoroughly enjoyed the 7 seasons of AoS in that rewatch (in fact I sometimes broke with what I was "supposed to watch" next when the site I was following said "watch episodes 1-19 of AoS then watch X, Y, and Z Netflix series"; I wanted to see what happened with the AoS team. I caught the movie tie ins when they happened (and they happened more often than this video made out; just one example, as late as season 6 "the destroyer of worlds" was in response to the fact that Thanos was coming).

Someone didn't watch Secret Invasion... I don't think Fury would've made Agents of Shield all that better. By that point Coulson was a more popular character and I think Clark Gregg was terrific in the role.
To say that a show would've succeeded or failed because of just one character is reductionist and spits in the face of the contributions of the other actors.

  • @lifeofnothingness
    @lifeofnothingness ปีที่แล้ว +92

I found that AoS had a lot of charm. Much of that can be attributed to the team's chemistry and how they developed over the seasons. The show worked well with it's limitations, especially after season 3 when they no longer needed to recycle one of the characters as the Antagonist. I find it's much better than the latest Marvel tv shows and movies, where comedy has been turned up to 11, emotional moments are consistently undercut by jokes, and the constant need for everything to be a setup that doesn't really pay off.
If anything, the show that actually was supposed to focus on Sam Jackson's Nick Fury, Secret Invasion, was a complete let down in every facet.
Also, I'm not really sure you've made a point for Nick Fury instead of Coulson. Nick Fury was already a leader of the Avengers and SHIELD. Where does he go from there? Leader a team of regular people? I think Coulson was a good fit because he wasn't Nick Fury, he was the everyday man. And it's hard for the everyday man to be the leader of a giant organization like SHIELD.
Maybe Fury's arc could have been going from the leader of SHIELD, seeing it dismantled from the inside by Hydra, and then realizing he needs to step back as the leader?

  • @anarchoiskunk
    @anarchoiskunk ปีที่แล้ว +113

I strongly disagree. Coulson was a perfect front runner to the show, and his alien DNA/resurrection plotline perfectly explained his sudden jump to Fury level actions. I think if Sam Jackson was part of the show, it would have just become the Sam Jackson hour, and the character development we get from the supporting cast would have been pushed to the side. I think the true issue with the show was the plot lines, that w seemed to fit more into the Dr Who universe more than Marvels. Additionally, the CGI was awful, once again falling more in line with Dr Who over Marvel. These two issues together made the show feel campy and detached from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I feel like the writers have done an amzing job writing Coulson as a real person who changed from the 'every man' to a heroic man who would sacrifice himself. He's been traumatized by his ressurection, then SHIELD fell, and then things just kept on coming, while the core--the found family he'd found in all this mess--stayed true. Coulson never felt out of place, he was the heart of SHIELD.
Honestly, the biggest problem of SHIELD is that this show is forced to exist in the shadow of the MCU. And it's a shame because it's a well-written, intelligent show with lots of heart (although sometimes it does get ridiculous, I admit it, but that's part of the fun)

When Ward was exposed, Coulson showed that he was as shocked and disappointed as we would be. Fury wouldn't've. In the Framework, Fury wouldn't have been able to make that public speech the way Coulson did, because Coulson collected Captain America trading cards the way we collect Captain America comic books. The closest Clark Gregg ever got to playing a Fury-type was the Sarge, and that was the neon gas bat party season, so... Anyway, the show was built on a half-season at a time arc, which actually made it feel pretty comic booky in its serialization. So, I don't know if you just didn't watch it, or you just didn't get get it, but you just didn't get it.

AoS was a good show by itself, and has even more merits if you take into account their hands where tied.
They kept "rebooting" the show because it was never meant to be a spy thriller, it was a superhero show where most of the cast were ordinary humans, so inhumans, magic, space and time travel are common tropes of the genre.
Also at least they were always trying new things instead of telling the protagonist he had to run faster every single season.

As everyone else is saying, AoS is top-tier Marvel. Even the complaints a lot of fans have for the first half of season 1, on rewatch, show they were actually taking their time to build backstory. We learn that Coulson has changed. We see him build a new team from scratch. We learn all of the character's deep motivations and what they're good and not good at.
Then the MCU kept throwing curveballs and they adapted and ran the hell with it. Fury never trusted people, and Coulson was the opposite, which is what made him stronger and more relatable. He was unflappable while also never trying to just be intimidating as seems to be Fury's big move.
And by "reboots" every season, the MCU kept changing or they had to manage the stakes they kept putting up. With deep character arcs tying them together. When you try to sum up the entire series in a sentence, I agree it sounds ridiculous. But it was all connected. All of the characters maintained their growth throughout.
And I think the "pod" format... having three major story arcs each season was brilliant. It kept the kinetic energy of the show going. I think people were fed up with being strung along for multiple seasons on one big mystery. Except, those still existed but it wasn't the crux of the show. The problems would be solved but new and bigger ones would show up and they'd deal with it. They were really big on ripping off band-aids and that was refreshing to me.
The writing was fantastic and rewarded people who paid attention. Haven't watched it in awhile? Rewatch it. So many seeds dropped in earlier seasons that pay off, sometimes seasons later.
And the acting talent they got... so much better than they should be. From Daisy's father, to Radcliffe, to Aida. And of course you can't forget Fitz and Simmons.
If we just got Fury, it'd just be a goofball show with everyone acting like how Spider-man and Happy act around Fury in No Way Home. Intimidated by him and Fury just complaining about how incompetent everyone was. Or you get Secret Invasion. Blegh.

I'm glad the comments are tearing it up in here.
Agents of Shield was an awesome show.
Could the show have been better with Nick Fury more present? Maybe. Nick as the protagonist? Probably, but it would be a completely different show.
The show we got was fantastic, and the slander of "the show was bland" or bad in any way, is something I think is a take I strongly disagree with.
The first season I'd say started bland, but once it dropped it's "super threat of the week" mentality and grabbed some focus, it got really good, and stayed good pretty much the whole way through.
The final 2 seasons only happened because of how much people liked the show. Season 5 was supposed to be the end, but people wanted more, so they made a new end. Then they wanted even more, so they made another ending. S6 & 7 had problems, but even those seasons were good. Every season before those were great.

I really disagree, the show was great and it did plot twists well, I really liked that it kinda semi-rebooted itself, cause I never knew what to expect, allies became enemies, enemies, became friends, and I think taking it on its own terms is great. I feel like maybe it was hindered by basically getting the scraps that the movies were either not gonna do, or gonna take forever to do, but I think they really did the best with what they could. its flawed, but its still good and maybe even great.

I think you're gonna get a lot of push back on this video. Firstly we just saw what happened when Nick Fury got his own series, it didn't turn out so well. Secondly AOS started out extremely bland in the first season and was only after Captain America: Winter Solider that they were forced to pivot the show and became all the better for it. Lastly I would probably take the majority of the offerings from Marvel Television (with the exception of Inhumans) to what we are currently getting from the MCU Disney+ Shows. Which end up being a lot of shows that range from "fine" to just straight up bad.

I thought it was weird too how at ~6:00 it was mentioned that the show should have been an adventure-of-the-week with an overarching hydra plot when that’s exactly what the first season was - and like you said it was the pívot away from that formula that made the show more widely loved. I’ve got loves of love for this channel but I think I it’s such a strange take and feels like they either didn’t watch the whole series or got a wildly different experience than other fans.

I couldn't disagree more. The show didn't need Fury, because they had Coulson. You are treating him as Fury Minion or something, when, in fact, in universe, he was, like, Fury right hand man. He wasn't just a guy, he's a SHIELD agent devoted to the cause. Every storyline they used in the show was very well develop and made people that might never heard about Ghost Rider, for exemple, understand his character and what he was about. One of the things that makes SHIELD as good as it is is the amount of inovation that every season provided. You never know what to expect and that's very excting, especially because when it happened, it made sense. I can't say the same for Secret Invasion, who had a lot of Fury, but did things like stop him from calling super heroes because of a personal fight that he sends someone else to fight for him. He said that we can't be dependent of super powers and sends G'iah to go get some. If more Fury means lazy things like this, I much prefer see agent Coulson, or Daisy Johnson on my screen.

Fury literally ranked up because of Skrulls all of his career, gets to the top because of them, messes with a powerful alien relic which caused the battle of NYC and allowed Coulson to die during the battle, he let S.H.I.E.L.D fall, let Talos die and almost allowed an alien invasion to happen. Coulson slowly rose the ranks “in the dark”, wasn’t even given details of his own death by Fury and saved the world 4 different times after Fury just kinda bailed when the agency collapsed. Coulson is the man who oversaw the construction of the helicarrier which Fury took and was the star at the end of ‘Age of Ultron’ and gave Coulson zero credit for it and the Avengers still think he’s dead, then Coulson legit became Ghost Rider to take out a man that can create matter which basically killed him at the end of season 5. Kinda resurrects in season 6 but not really. Then he became an android and saved the world again from a different alien race far superior than the skrulls and created one of marvels best strongest female characters of all time besides maybe Captain Marvel. Coulson deserves to be more on the big screen than Fury does. Coulson is the legitimate definition of a ride or die.

Fury is an ass and tbh after watching Secret Invasion im kinda glad that Agents Of Shield didnt make him the more of a central figure. If he popped up a bit more now and again across the seasons then maybe (i thought they might have brought it back round to the SWORD stuff at the end) but i dont think it should have been a super important thing.
Agents of Shield though doesnt really need fixing, Coulson is great and still very much embodies the everyman as the series continues and shows he has way more heart and likeability than Nick Fury ever had. Shield was actually fun and inventive despite the restrictions placed on what they could do amd had some of the best character development in Marvel across the seven seasons.
I would rather have another 5 seasons of Shield than something like Secret Invasion anyday. And it seems like Marvel are learning their lesson now as they turn back to more traditional TV models.
Imagine what they could do with a show like Shield now? A multiseason show, where reinvention is part of the DNA and they are ACTUALLY ALLOWED to touch all these different corners of the marvel universe and see it from a different perspective. And give it the disney+ budget. I want more of that please... Not half baked superhero spy shows that doesnt want to invest time into its characters (secret invasion)

The show kept doing new things, the characters grew, relationships evolved and everyone was amazing in their parts. To say the show didn’t work is to be woefully ignorant of the stories it told as the most certainly did work well. I wish Fury had shown up a few more times but aside from that I don’t think having him head it up would have made it better. Usually I hate that US tv has so many episodes in a series but AoS used that time to build our hatred of Ward, to flesh out a story so it didn’t feel rushed, to explore more than one idea in a single series and to have the relationships and characters grow naturally as time passes. Series 4 is a great showcase of doing more than one plot as an arc with Ghostrider, the LMDs and the Framework all coming together in the best series AoS had. All the disney+ shows have had fatal flaws and I don’t really care to revisit any of them but AoS I have seen multiple times.

Agents of Shield was great if you respected it for what it was. During it's run it was scorned by people and called non-canon and then those same people also hated the canon shows. 🤷🏾‍♀️ The biggest flaw was not picking the strongest storylines and expanding on them. Global terragenesis should have had more time to do something because there were multiple groups of Inhumans and we only met two of them. We have several minor Inhuman characters that were created as just in case placeholders and never used again after a few episodes. Hell, they created Mike Peterson/Dethlok and then he just faded into obscurity.

"Overall, AOS is a bland and somewhat disappointing viewing experience"
Okay, so either nerdstalgic is bias against AOS or they clearly didn't watch the show. Yes, the fact that AOS kept trying to tie into the MCU did hurt it narratively in some aspects and as to how and how badly, I'll leave that for others to debate. I have an issue with how you've described the show. It doesn't sound fair or balanced and throughout the video you've been putting it down and pointing out it's "flaws" and acknowledging few if none of it's strength. For example, as a tie in to the MCU, it's bad but as a show independent of the MCU it is a great show undoubtedly. Even some of the examples used to show how much of a mess it is (the inhumans, the time travel in season 5, the Ghost Rider) are actually concepts that were executed well in the show itself if you watch the show in it's entirety.
And Coulson sacrificing himself for Daisy makes complete sense in terms of character within the show. Throughout every season in AOS we see this is the type of person he is as him and Daisy end up growing a psuedo-father-daughter relationship. In the show we see that he is a loyal Shield agent, a bureaucrat and so much more.
I think in an effort to justify your conclusion, you've blinded yourself to all the good that AOS has give and thus why it stayed on the air for 7 seasons when. I encourage you to reevaluate your research process because to call AOS bland and/or a disappointment shows how little you know about it, it's storyline, narratives and characters and the fanbase that it has earned.
I realise that as a fan I have a bias here but I just wanted to get this off my chest

    Eh, no.
For the sake of having a reply that's longer than 6 characters, this video gets a lot wrong.
This was a comic book show. The switches are very much echoing what you see in Avengers & X-Men comics. Casts change, settings change, you get alternative realities, time travel, guest stars, heel turns, body swaps, deaths & resurrections. They deal with magic, rogue AI, aliens, rival spies & super-powered bad guys.
There's a fundamental misunderstanding of Coulson's character. He's a bureaucrat in the same sense Maria Hill is a bureaucrat. Theyre spies FFS! Being "baby" Nick Fury just means he does stuff that Fury does. Because, they're both senior leaders of a spy organisation. Coulson just has a better sense of humour & he's kinder.
It really feels like the review doesn't engage with the show itself. Not a single mention of Daisy, May, Fitzsimons, Mack, Yoyo etc.
For the most part, it criticises the show for not being what it never tried to be.

Fury doesn't needs to be a lead, but having him at least twice per season would be good. He doesn't even need to share the same space as the main cast, he can appear on a screen or as a hologram.
The most disappointing thing about AoS is the last season. While every season before hand can believably happen in the background of the film, the last season doesn't fit into the Infinity War and End game timeline. I really like a lot of the concepts and characters and I do hope they'll show back up in the main MCU proper, even if they need to do a bit of reconning.

I love Agents of Shiled. I'd at least like the cast reused-especaily Chloe Bennet as Quake. She was the real star!

Arguably a better show than anything on Disney+ since.

No argument there my friend, actual Disney+ Shows are Superbad, with only few exceptions like Wanda and Loki, the rest sucked ass

While the first couple of Agents of Shield seasons were pretty bland, I stuck with it and found that about the mid-point of the run it started getting enjoyable to watch, and then I seemed to like each subsequent season more and more. It still wasn't great, but I found myself looking forward to each new season and was genuinely sad when it finally wrapped up.

Clark Gregg did great. Didn't need Fury🙄. The Show finished strong. Detaching from the MCU was a good thing for them.

@ultrabrian8151They did a whole two seasons of multiversal traveling in the last two seasons.
