    Your inked line art is amazing. Most inking process videos that I've watched show the artist drawing a line, lifting their pen/stylus, then building up their line weight with subsequent, additional strokes. You, however, change your line weight within a single stroke. That's really impressive, and it's something I struggle a lot with!

    Up until this moment I did not know inking was different from the standard Lineart so I never understood how someone could draw their line and undo till it's perfect with pressure in the lines, I can now improve my skills with the correct mindset.

    I draw on both platforms (though mind you Im not Luis Royo or Simon Bisley good) and I could never get clean ink lines traditionally yet still I can ink on it but from what I heard its great to train with fine art brushes that are fine tipped or so. con about inking traditionally is that it can be a bit messy. With digital artwork I can ink and have no mess but I don't seem to get those smooth lines I see alot of talented ones seem to have, am I missing a trick or something. Jamie what would be the best resolution to get ink lines that don't have that "Gray" blurry edges to them.
    Im a self taught artist that likes to game and draw (began getting back to art when I was in my 2nd year of High school back in 2001). I use tablets, Cintiq (just recently upgraded from cintiq12WX to 21UX, though I don't want to splurge all my money on the 22HD since Ill wait for the price of the 27QHD to lower down after a few years).

    You're much better at explaining this in a steady, digestible manner; and you actually show what the hell you're doing and why you chose to do it. Some artists have a tendency to babble about the multiplicity of options and forget that they're *trying* to show the basics, or just one method, so the whole video becomes tangential and convoluted.

    Those lines are so smooth?!?! Mine are choppy and i get pretty much zero variation in pressure sensitivity... I think it's my cheap graphics tablet... I have to press extremely lightly to get a slight variation and i can't have a smooth thin end to a line like you have here... It's also extremely choppy if I was just doing a line zoomed out

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not entirely sure without seeing what you're working with, but there should be a brush in that version called Hard Round. That should work like a regular inking brush. It's been a while since I've used CS6, but also make sure you're using brush and not pencil or whatever else is hiding in the brush tool. I think if you hit shift+B for a while it'll switch between brush, pencil, something else, and then back to brush. I think.

  • @TXFDA
    @TXFDA 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Frenden's Manga Studio brushes are great. The only downside is that some of them require advanced tablet features, like pen tilt and rotation. Great if you have a tablet capable of it, useless if not. And the only way to know if a brush requires those features or not, is to just test it out yourself.
    My biggest issue with digital inking is stuff like feathering and line weight. I'm not too bad on paper, but on a table, I have a hard time with getting lines to be the thickness I want. I end up making them too thick or too thin.
    I also have a hard time changing my brush sizes. Like, I get a setting I like, I don't wanna mess it up by changing it's size.
    "The downside of undo is that you get used to it and spend a while getting your lines perfect when they don't need to be.".......yep. Sounds like me. I redraw lines over and over again until I like them.

      This sucker was done years ago when Kyle Webster was not employed by Adobe. Now, all of Kyle's brushes are available for free if you're a creative cloud subscriber which, I know, is a big pain in the ass. But his photoshop brushes are really great. I like the Rough Inker Comics because it has a lot grit to it. Has those dirty bleed things that you might get if you're inking real paper. I also like the Blake for thinner detail lines and some dry brushing. Those are my favorite two Photoshop brushes.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try updating your drivers? Which is something everyone always says, but every once in a while that happens to me. First I check drivers, then I unplug/replug, then i restart my computer. Usually one of those does it.
      The other thing to check is the brush itself. Go to the Brush palette and check out Brush Tip Shape. In Shape Dynamics, make sure Pen Pressure is activated.
      Hope this helps.

  • @JumpinJonnyDumplin

    How are you getting these ink-like lines? Does it depend on the brush type? Is it the pressure settings?

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For this particular demo, I use all the default settings. So the brush is the regular hard round brush and I'm using default pressure settings and all that. You can get really deep into the brush settings these days. This demo is from an older version of photoshop so there are much better inking brushes now thanks to Kyle Weber's sets. But everything in this demo is default.

    I had to stop watching your tutorial at 13:56 because you rotated the image like four times. While I did find it helpful, I do get motion sick very easily and had to resort to listening only to the audio. Thank you for posting the video. I watch a lot of different people and you mention some things I can do. I also find it helpful that you aren't just voicing over a speed paint as I always walk away from them feeling like I'm a slowpoke. It just helps me keep perspective on how much time cool stuff takes. Keep up the awesome work. :)

      Aw, sorry about that. I don't realize how fast I rotate things when I'm in the thick of it but I can definitely see how that could throw someone off who isn't ready for it. I usually get motion sick as well so there must be something about doing the rotation yourself rather than watching someone else.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be a couple of things.
      1. If your document's color mode is bitmap, every line with be very pixelated either black or white.
      2. Sometimes you might accidentally be using the pencil tool instead of the brush tool. That happens to me every once in a while if I push B too many times. Anything you draw with the pencil tool will be very pixelated.
      3. If the layer you're working on is somehow set to Dissolve, the lines will look pixelated.
      4. Uh, if you're zoomed really far in for some reason, things can look pixelated because photoshop is a rasther program.
      Those are just off the top of my head. Let me know if any of that was helpful or if you still have a problem. This can be very frustrating when things don't work the way they should.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually have anti aliasing on when I'm inking things myself. It really depends on the output. If you're working at 300 or 400 dpi for print, turning aliasing off will be okay since the printer will just kinda smoosh it all together. If you want to output to the web, taking a 300 dpi piece and downsizing to 72 will also smoosh everything so your lines will look smooth.

      I'm not sure. I always check to see if I'm running the latest drivers if I'm running into a tablet problem. If your problem isn't a hardware/software issue and it's just taking a while to get that hang of it, that's all about practice. Honestly, took me a few months to get the hang of a regular Intuos. And now that I'm regularly using a Cintiq, I can't go back to the Intuos. So I don't think it's you. It's either a hardware/software or practice issue.

      I'm using a tablet with pressure sensitivity. So the harder I press, the thicker the line. The lighter, the thinner.

      how many pressurelevels ur tablet got? my tablet got 1024 but im not even close to get those lines like u do

    • @TheJamieNoguchi

      I think this particular tablet was the same, 1024. I guess it just takes a lot of practice. I've been doing this for years.

    Im using an intuos medium. But i struggle with inking a lot. I find it very difficult to draw good lines with it. They all come out a bit "jerky" exept when i draw them very quickly. (note that im very good with pencils not digitally.) Is the cintiq that much better? your lines look much smoother. puu.sh/jbkDP/8cb0c98d10.jpg here is an example. puu.sh/iIexP/ae7ce9136d.jpg and here is my pencil stuff.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The Cintiq won't make your inked lines any better. It has the same levels of pressure as an Intuos.
      Honestly, it really just takes a lot of practice and patience. In general, for longer lines and straight lines, I usually use broad, quick strokes. It's slightly different when working on paper. I usually ink very very slowly, especially if I'm pulling a longer line. But I feel like there's a lot of jitter working digitally when you move slowly so it really shows up in those longer lines.
      For shorter lines and little fiddly details, going slowly works out decently.
      Another good trick is to work way big, bigger than you intend on presenting the final image. My files are usually 600dpi and at least 3000 pixels on a side. If you zooooooom in on the inks, some of the lines are pretty rough and gross, but when you print them out or reduce for the web, that gets rid of any jitter.
      Also, I absolutely hate inking in Photoshop. Manga Studio is my inking program of choice. It smooths out the digital jitter ever so slightly so your inks are nice and crisp.
      Hope some of this helps!

      @AndrewLeathers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Noguchi yeah it does. :) i was also thinking about vector graphics just for inking, because it is my nightmare basically. Everything else is fine. But generally it feels like simply painting without any inking is better with a graphic tablet.

      Not easily. With a mouse, you don't have access to things like pressure sensitivity.

    • @jamiececilielange5249
      @jamiececilielange5249 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Photoshop, Sai, GIMP and other software, there are line tools where you basically make a lot of dots along the sketch you've already made. In Photoshop it's called the Pen tool. It's would be tedious to use it for small details or crosshatching. It would also be tedious to color with a mouse.

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brush I use is just the hard round with pen pressure to control the size. This is also an old ass version of Photoshop so Kyle Brushes at that time were not included. For actual work, I use a number of the Kyle Brushes inking brushes because they give me the closest feel to inking with actual brushes.
      Frenden (frenden.com) also makes some great brush sets for Clips and Photoshop and a few other digital art programs out there.

    That is FUDGING UGLY. And that's a hell of a compliment. There's something about that thing that just looks foul. Maybe its the mini-manga in it's head. =) Just out of curiosity, have you or do you ink people? Like trying to ink out people and convey the contours of their body? Not necessarily going for ultra photo realism (though that would be cool) but for a pseudo comic book representation of a humanbeing. I'm having a terrible time trying to ink the subtle shadows that fall along the body, from facial contours such as the lips and muscles. Not man muscles but the inconspicuous female muscles.

    • @christopherfunk5654
      @christopherfunk5654 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Funk Just as an example, you can check this out: sergeastahov.com/images/DigitalSculpting/FemaleBodyFrontBack_lrg_Thb.jpg
      If you look at the torso and see the shaded areas that depict the muscles and bone underneath, that's what I'm talking about. Would you just block that in and then vary the hatching? You know, to accurately depict it? So almost realistic?
      The pure blacks are easy. It's the grays that I struggle with. Hatching, everything, looks awful. =(

    • @TheJamieNoguchi
      @TheJamieNoguchi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christopher Funk depends. If I'm doing black and white, I'd probably use some thin crosshatching lines to define some of that musculature. If I'm coloring it, I might do very thin lines to define the lower part of the muscles and then define it with more clarity in color.

    • @christopherfunk5654
      @christopherfunk5654 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Noguchi Yeah. I'm going to experiment with that and see what I can get out of it. I can nail it perfectly with pencil but squib it with ink. Pencil is cake. Ink is a mystery. I think I'll just have to fine tune it until it comes out right. I was inking traditionally (no computer) but I can't handle ruining another drawing. Such a loss of time. Anyway, thanks for the advice!
