    It's often difficult to dial in just right amount of compression when singing in the calmer sections...
    THEN, throw in the added challenge of turning that compression into a healthy, broken up and aggressive distortion when the song takes off ?!?!
    Managing your dynamics and vocal textures can feel downright daunting!
    It's grit on-demand. It's matching vocal intensity perfectly with what the song is asking for! This artistic dynamic control is one of the many aspects of aggressive singing that Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace, Saint Asonia etc...) has mastered!
    Join me as I dive into the style of Adam Gontier using several short studio examples from his TDG tenure and in the process, I'll show you how to gain WAY better control over how to use compression and distortion in your own singing!

    The secret to Adam Gontier's voice is his use of diaphragm and how he squeezes air, and also the amount of wetness he maintains in the back of his throat to not damage anything.
    Mixed with a breathy head voice.
    Adam's voice is interesting because it has the grit of a scream, but not in the head voice or frying his vocal folds, but deep in his chest voice. His grit isn't a fry, but an extremely compressed grunt in his chest. The reason why he can hit such specific notes, is that he keeps his head voice extremely relaxed and open, and uses his diaphragm to squeeze out his notes in his chest.
    Adam found a sweet spot where his extremely compressed and chocked up chest voice resonates with his open/clear head voice.
    And when it comes to this videos argument that alot of that sound is in the production.... It's not as much as you think. Yes, there is layering in this track but listen to him live... he has this natural resonance that echos when he mixes his voice JUST right. And it's even hard for him to do sometimes.
    The last thing to note though, is that his voice is so hard to replicate because he PUSHES SO HARD in his chest WITHOUT tightenin his throat at all. He squeezes the bottom of his chest to its limits, so much so, that he can use that air to litterally push the notes out of his head voice.
    When you do it right, it doesn't hurt your throat at all, BUT all the diaphragm squeeze pushes the blood into your head to an uncomfortable degree. Once you let go the blood will rush back down and you will feel like you will pass out and cause a splitting headache.
    I know that may sound like you are doing it incorrectly, but I've been singing for over a decade and I can do all kinds of metal screaming and growls. But to this day, at least for me, that Adam Gontier sound is the hardest one to maintain because it requires so. much. chest. squeeze.

  • @mikeandike2021
    @mikeandike2021 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's completely nuts that Adam is doing that in chest. When I was younger I always thought he was an untrained singer because of how he used his grit and distortion but now that you've broke it down I'm starting to think that he's had training and the way he uses his distortion is mind blowing

    • @justinfaller5910
      @justinfaller5910 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I always thought he was just screaming loud to get that sound. But I saw him recently with Saint Asonia. They played a couple TDG songs and he sounded better than he used to in the live videos I watched from 15 years ago. He has a technique that very few other singers can replicate. It somehow doesn't destroy his voice even after playing shows constantly.

    • @mikeandike2021
      @mikeandike2021 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@justinfaller5910 honestly all voices are different some people can handle a lot of distortion like Adam can. Distortion just comes naturally to some singers who have grit even in their cleans without trying and it doesn't hurt them at all. It's a pretty weird phenomenon.

    Love this video as much as I loved your online courses! Worth every penny for aspiring singers and professionals as well. Been singing and screaming for 8 years now and only just found my own voice with the help of Chris Liepe!

    Take a look at "Mauro Henrique" work. It is a Brazilian christian singer that just left the incredible band "Oficina G3". He is extremely technical but very musical and creative musician! You will love his distortion as well

    At the end of my teens, I started to develop a more a of a baritone voice and started sounding very close to Adam but will never be able to hit that B4 as well as him. One thing you gotta give Adam credit for is that he pronounces every word very clearly! His enunciation has always been 10/10 and maybe it's got to do with him being a Canadian. The reason I can tell is because English is my 3rd language and I can understand each and every word in any Three Days Grace song.

      English is my first language, but I have auditory processing disorder and normally really struggle to discern what people sing. It’s significantly easier for me to understand Adam’s vocals, and I appreciate that a lot.

    The closed caption help me to understand so much your vídeos (cuz I don't speak English so good). I don't know if it's very complicated on editions, but I'll love so much to receive this gift in your vídeos. Your channel is definitely my favorite ❤️

    Hey I just want to say thank you. The way you explain and demonstrate vocal technique is so clear for me that I've seen more vocal improvement in tone, technique and health in the past month (since first seeing you on TH-cam) than in 3 years. These vids are honestly incredible and I'm so much happier with how much more control I have in my voice. Will certainly sign up to this vocal course at some point soon!
    I know I've asked before but, pls do a full vid on Jimmy 'the REV' Sullivans vocals in a7x and pinkly smooth. That would be amazing.

    At this point Chris you read my mind more than Google does. Every time I think about a singer within a week you come out with a video breaking down their style. I don’t know what impresses me more, your teaching or your telepathic abilities. Either way thank you sir!

    One of my favorite vocalists, and a great review breakdown of what he is doing to get his sound
    Having learned compression with you and a a few other videos about, using it to replicate the overall sound of Adam was MUCH easier!

    I hear the Chester Bennington in your yell. Also, I'm so grateful that someone actually dissected this guy's voice. It's been bothering me since I first heard I hate everything about you. I knew it was a double but I felt that he may just have a dual tone. Thanks so much for this!
