Bring on the gray, after seven children I am proud to sport my grays, I am a grandma after-all! 😉 This was my favorite frugal talk yet. Blessings Vivi.
Hi Vivi, you are absolutely right. I color my hair at home but thinking on going grey. And I found a quote that says :" If you want to be beautiful, start with your heart"; Thank you for your videos.
Me too Johanne. I was so tired of dealing with my roots and paying for salon treatments. It took a bit of a mind shift but 4 years out I'm loving my gray and like you said, one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Hi Viv, I'm seventy-five and have only been to the hairdressers about four times in my life. I have very long straight hair and my husband trims it and I colour it. My hair is still very lovely and shiny and I pull it back into a pony tail and also put it up in a french roll. I find it so easy to manage and save so much money by not going to the hairdresser. I still like wearing makeup when I go out because I like looking glamorous, even at my age.
I made a New Year's resolution a couple of years ago regarding all the "products" I use, everything from cleaning products to hair and beauty stuff. I resolved to "use it up and replace it thoughtfully". No buying anything until what I already have is gone. Then I take stock and decide if there are better choices or maybe I don't need that product at all anymore. I've stuck to the plan and there is less and less in the cupboards all the time.
Yay!!!!!! Good on you lovely....this is brilliant! And, thankfully, it is getting easier to find more sustainable/less plastic etc products these days. 😀
Aldi's Lacura Vitamin C Hot Cloth Cleanser is fabulous. It's £3.99, comes with a good sized muslin cloth & lasts for months. Around 2/3 through the tube, the cleanser gets more difficult to squeeze out, so I cut the end off the tube & scoop the rest of the product into a clean pot. Yes the tube is plastic but it's just about the only plastic I buy. I agree about thinking whether we really need make up. A dab of cream blush works wonders for me...& a smile 😁
Just found your site and loving this video. I've embraced my grey hair and have been cutting it short for the last two years and now am brave enough to use shears on the back and scissors on the top. I no longer use nail polish, perfume or makeup. I've been reading the comments below and feel better knowing there is a like minded community 😊 xx
I haven't gone to a hairdresser except for a few special occasions in nearly 50 years. I had a friend who taught me how to cut my own, and my family's hair. I did love to dye it though. I have never dyed it black... and that is about the only color it hasn't been. I stopped dying it 15 years ago. Mostly white now. Minimal makeup. Basic soaps and shampoos. Stopped with conditioner years ago. Good vids on manis and pedis on the internet. It's nice to learn how to do these things for yourself. It 's not just money that you save... it's time going to all these places.
I'm just watching an old Monty Don programme on French Gardens (the gourmet garden) where he's focusing on people who grow their own food in an attempt at self-sufficiency - a convent, cafes, individuals - makes me think of you!
My hair has been grey white for years now I love it. I use Ivory soap to wash with for over 50 years. I use cornstarch for deoderant. Makeup haven't worn for many years. I enjoyed your chat today. Thankyou Vivi
@@tracyd2320 Hi Eileen .......I think the corn-starch thing is a simple as using it like a dusting powder/talc......dab it on to absorb excess moisture. I guess you could add some essential oils for scent?.....
Hi Vivi. Great chat. I always colored mohair myself but since Covid they quit making my favorite color do I quit coloring it. Yep, @ 59 I have plenty of gray and I am okay with that. I also ditched bottled shampoos about a year ago after watching one of your videos. I love the shampoo bars and they last so long. When I feel my hair needs a conditioner I just go to my garden, choose an herb and make a tea and then fill up a recycled squeeze bottle with the tea and add just about 2 or 3 tablespoons of white vinegar to it. I keep it in my shower and use every other day. I love it. Love all your videos. Watched Richard and Paul this morning and now you, what a lovely Mothers Day.
Great video Vivi.I used to be a high maintenance girl, until I gave up work.My hair is long and dark but I’m now embracing the grey and I’m gonna let it grow out.No more hairdressers cos since I saw how you cut yours on one of your vids,I cut my own now.I must say I spend the most on a good moisturiser as my skin is dry and sensitive.
I too have given up most personal products which come in plastic. It becomes a ridiculous amount of plastic to deal with; sometimes plastic encased in plastic! I trim my own wavy hair ( no one can see the mistakes). Shampoo bars and herbal/plant tea rinses are amazing! Thanks for such a thoughtful video! PS: when I moved to a remote island I realized I no longer needed those panty hose!-they went to the garden to tie up tomatoes !
Thank you Vivi all good advice. I don't have any mascara as I am allergic to eye makeup anyway. I have to be very careful what I put on my skin too. I only use an eyebrow crayon and thats because I no longer have any eyebrows! Lol!! Nor any hairs on my legs!!! Its great getting old!! Saves loads a money!!!
I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I have eye lashes like you and very dark circles so I’d look dead at work. I just go in 1 time a week so I don’t wear it otherwise. I do want to learn to trim my hair though.
I gave up dyeing a long time ago and embraced the grey....I shudder to think of all the chemicals that are released down the drain when hair colour is rinsed off. I also gave up conditioner too...I just don't need it, but I do use a little styling product and I do use a hairspray. But both of those last a long time. Advertising and marketing used to convince me that I needed a raft of products!
Your hair is the perfect example of letting nature take it's course.....it's gorgeous! Hahaha......I'm jealous! I went into a massive branch of Boots recently.......I had to go past rows and rows and rows of hair products to get to the thing I needed......I was gobsmacked by the amount!
For hair and beauty. I no longer wear make up. I haven't worn make up since 2008. For beauty products I buy in bulk from Amazon. For items like bar soap I get those as presents like at Christmas time and or for birthday presents. For shampoo and conditioner I buy the 2 and 1 it's a shampoo and conditioner in one bottle. For under arm deodorant I buy those at the dollar store and the same for the tooth paste and mouth wash.
I have not been to a hair dresser since before covid. I was going about every 5-6 weeks and spending a fortune maintaining a dark black colour and a short hair cut. I got my husband to run the clippers over my hair a couple of times but then just decided it was time to grow my hair out again including any grey. Its probably ageing me, but I just don't care. People got used to it last year, and I feel better for not wasting my time sat in the hairdressers. I'm not saying I won't go back for a cut, but my days of colouring to conform to other people's expectations of what my hair should be life to fit in are done. I've never worn a lot of make up or used a lot of products. I think people need to be happy with what they are personally doing.
Living more true to ourselves... yes, there is the key. I am going grey, and admit with menopause creeping on, that I felt a bit like I was fading away. But then I found that I could choose instead to live and try to be most myself, and that is a bit more adventurous, I hope! 💕
I used lockdown to grow out my dyed blonde hair and fully embrace my grey. I also grew out my fringe! I get a good cut once a year, pretty much a straight one length bob style that's easy to maintain myself. I wear a tiny bit of make up to school and a bit more on the very rare occasions I go "out out" Not once has anyone said I look terrible so I'm taking that as a win!! 🙂
Great video I started using shampoo/conditioner bars over 5yrs ago and love them i get a 2in1 from poundland and my hair loves it and has never felt betterxx
I noticed that my already fine hair started really thinning after I went on insulin and that my scalp was having reactions to hair products. So I started using the "no-poo " method after watching Shireen Fitzgerald go that way. Now what I do because my hair does frizz, I lightly apply argan oil of Morocco before washing my hair well with warm water: No shampoo or conditioner. My hair looks and feels healthier. I also purchased an electric nail file/grinder and wet/dry razor years ago (20+) on sale and I am still using those.
Interesting topic. I for one believe in Feminine Power rather than feminist power:-). I am not a girlie girl, but have my hair colored and highlighted regularly and love my nails painted. To me it is the same as exercising, some sort of self care. Oh I still have my EpiLady from 30 years ago! Mid evil torture method;-) but it works!!
Love your videos! I cut my own hair (since lockdown) and saved a fortune! It was a revelation! TH-cam tutorials can teach us how to do pretty much anything! The only makeup I use is mascara, and I buy about 1 a year and it lasts ( some people may think that’s gross, but honestly it’s fine!) x
I have illness (chronic) I hair trained to only wash once a week (I shower obviously) I don't use conditioner .. In Feb 2020 I had it dyed for my daughters wedding and realised I didn't want to sit there in pain for hours plus all the males around me were cheerfully grey.. they also wear no make up... 2+ years on and I'm a brunette with silver glitter I don't wear make up .... I have a friend who has a beauty budget of 200 a month and on a day out recently a waitress assumed she was my mum!!!!flattering for me horrifying for her as she's younger than me...not bragging but I feel it shows the fresh face of someone who hydrates and spends time in the fresh air trumps make up!!
Loved this, Vivi. For your Australian viewers, an amazing shampoo and conditioner bar in one is Shampoo With a Purpose. It leaves hair silky and clean with no residue and I can easily go without washing my long hair for four or five days. I think the reason we've been sold on conditioner is that shampoos are full of chemicals that strip the hair - similar to the way supermarket bread has added nutrients because all the goodness has been refined out! I also make calendula balm each year and love it for lips and dry hands. It would make a great baby nappy cream too. You didn't mention deodorant, I don't think. I buy an organic brand to use in the hot summer weather but the rest of the time bi-carb soda is fine, or nothing when it's cold. I think eating a healthy, plant-centred diet helps us not to have body odour or foot odour. Do you use bi-carb or have other suggestions? Hugs from Australia.xx
Thank you, lovely, for the heads up re your Auzzie shampoo bar. Yes, the calendula balm is great on nappy rash......whenever I have had friends with a new baby I always make them a big pot for exactly this. 😊 Oh drat, forgot to mention deodorant.....I use a solid bar one from Lush......but most days don't bother with it at all if it's going to be a gentle, sewing day for example....
What a brilliant video. Funny how we made up and dyed when we probably didn't need it and now we try to do the impossible . The grey came through and went blond, then in lock down went brown oops , now keep topping up every month to stop me looking like a badger. Going to go back to blond and eventually grey ( it looks more natural really on those who have embraced it ) Never been a big fan of hairdressers , always disappointed, took in a pic of felicity Kendal and came out like Boris Johnston . As for make up.... Got mascara for a wedding, couldn't see to to put it on and couldn't put it on while wearing glasses to see. I'm now grade two listed, but hey I've got eleven tomato plants on the go and they don't care how I look...sorted. thanks again Viv x
Missed this when it came out so just caught up. Just ordered an epilator using boot points built up over the last three years. Teenage daughters. No more disposable razors for me.
You shouldn’t be kidding - you’re naturally gorgeous, don’t downplay it. I adore that you can talk so passionately about what you do while keeping space for those who do otherwise. We do home haircuts. Two years ago, I discovered the curly girl method and it completely changed my hair (not quite my life but it did improve it). It’s more products than ever before and I hated that, still do, but I’ve come to terms with it working so well for me. My hair is strong, beautiful and with only one wash a week it’s the simplest it’s ever been for me. I’ve tried no poo, bars and most everything else I think. And nothing did the job but I’ll continue to experiment because I’m sure they’ll get better at making these and one day I’ll find something that works just as well as my current system.
Thank you so much lovely, I really appreciate that. And good on you for continuing to experiment.....I found quite a few of the bar shampoos left my hair feeling greasy......but rinsing with the rosemary helped a bit......just need to find the right one for you.
I stopped using hair conditioner after you mentioned it a few weeks back, I can't believe that I've been using it for so long and didn't need it. I found it hard to find a conditioner that didn't flatten my hair anyway.
One ‘positive’ I have from the last couple of years is that I don’t rea ch for the mascara the minute I leave the house. I have blonde lashes so no definition without it, but realised actually I really don’t care! 😊
I colour my daughter's hair at home, I can't find a best by date on her packet. She buys it at Poundland so extremely frugal!!! I am rocking my silver 😁
I loved this vlog. I stopped wearing makeup decades ago. I will only wear it for really dress up occasions. I can say I have unopened make-up that has never been used. I did try a prescription to lengthen and darken my eye lashes about 12 years ago but stopped. It really helped but as soon as you stop the effects did too. I look like I have no eye lashes at all. I am behind you all the way with that. I do still have my hair done but am transitioning to my natural color slowly.
Full disclosure. I stopped going to my hairdresser when the first lockdown hit two years ago and as a result have saved more than 4k! Coincidently I had retired from my job a month earlier and had ditched the full on daily make up and blow dry routine. My lovely sister cuts my hair now and does a fabulous job. By the way my former long time hairdresser switched careers during the pandemic and is now a real estate broker. ✂️
You weren't kidding Vivi; you really are naturally gorgeous! Lovely chat as always. I've always cut my own hair, now 60% grey but I love it. I make your Calendula oil and balm so now my skin looks fab too. So happy to know your channel! Dx
I did get a laugh at today's topic: Hair and Beauty. "But I have neither!" But that's not totally true. I do have some hair, just receding with a thin patch. ~ Jon in rural BC, Canada
Hiya Vivi really enjoyed chat/visit. Personally given up a lot of the fuss I believe it’s an age thing & I’m all good with my grey agree ive earned each & every one, Lol. Message don’t judge someone by the way they look on the outside it’s what’s within that truly matters. I tend to look at the eyes, like you mentioned they can relay alot. Looking forward to watching upcoming video on gift giving. A tip for anyone scrape out the excess of lipstick tube into a small container, there is about a 1/4 of precious product, use lip brush or finger to apply ta da! Lol Thankyou Vivi take care, stay safe Luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦
Hello Vivi. Yep, hair. When I was in my mid 20s knew I’d inherited my mom’s hair, gray started coming quickly. I just asked on the phone about cost. I’ve always have had long hair and at times mid back. But long hair was nearly $100 to color my hair and right there and then made the decision to just keep it natural. My hair grows so quickly and my hair is always pulled back or up so roots would be noticed, needing touching up and with two kids, I didn’t see that as important enough for the expense. When I was young I loved my mom’s silver hair so now I have mine own. ☺️ I did used to pay for haircuts twice a year, since you showed how you cut yours, I started cutting mine. During the beginning of the craziness I even cut my daughter’s your way. Great video!👍🏼 😉💗💗💗
Hi vivi I get my hair cut once a year and I trim my own fringe at home . I also colour my own hair I bulk buy when I see it . I love having bright red hair it’s my only luxury and it. Makes me feel good . I also do my own waxing at home as Im a hairy beast 😂
I think most people would shy away from giving up deodorant. I highly recommend Pitrok, a solid stone/crystal that does come in a plastic container but from personal experience lasts over 5 years at least and really does the job without the harmful stuff. I have a very active outdoors life and it really works. It would be nice to be natural in the under arm dept but you may not care about looks but you don’t want to smell. Loved this video and agree that less is definitely more x x
During lockdown I went through everything. Inventories helped so much. When I calculated what I used and the savings it was massive. I am still using up from that first lockdown 😂 I also invested in a reusable razor and I love it. As for my hair, I had no intention of hiding my grey hair. Like you say, I’ve earned it. Also, I found my grey hair bothered others more than it did me 😂 I have made my own frugal beauty routines. Having longish hair is easy to maintain and if I wish to style it I have curlers or victory roll tutorials. In Redhill, Surrey, there is East Surrey College. It has a hair and beauty salon. I was my daughters model for beauty and would often go in for all different types of treatments and make overs. It’s at a massively reduced price and worth it in so many way. I can fully recommend. The pound shop had a shampoo and conditioner bar. I got it to try and see what it was like. Haven’t used it as yet but will soon. Brilliant video Vivi. You look beautiful just as you are. Have a blessed week xxx
Yay, good on you for doing that inventory and using up first before buying again......it's amazing how much we can accumulate! And how fab that you were able to be your daughters model! 😊
I have so been looking forward to this chat Vivi 😊 I use to get my long hair cut at the local hairdressing college and I was absolutely gutted when it closed down a few years ago. Prices there were brilliant and I was always happy with my student cut and colour. Haircut was £6.50 and colour was £20. The now nearest hair college is 16 miles away which I don’t think would be cost effective with the fuel cost to get there and back 🙁 I attempted cutting my own hair several times during lockdown by following TH-cam tutorials but I messed it up. My haircut now costs £38 and that’s just for a wash, it and blow dry. Yes it’s expensive but that seems to be the going rate around here. However, I do my own facials, manicure and pedicures and with lots of practice I feel that I do them just as well as a salon but a fraction of the price. Like you Vivi I’m conscious about treading lighting on Mother Earth so whenever I need to replace a product I am in fact replacing it with a plastic free sustainable product such as Zao for makeup for example. I am definitely finding the replacements more costly but it’s something I’m willing to do for the sake of the planet 🌎 Can I ask what facial moisturiser you use? Thank you for the always fab video Vivi - have a lovely day! Amanda in Cheshire xx
Oh lovely Vivi I have missed you after a pause of a few months in my life due to house move(s). Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I want to know if anyone else uses normal bottled extra virgin olive oil or Avocado Oil on their skin? That's all I use these past few years after stopping using Almond oil on the basis of cost. For many years I had added a few drops of Geranium Essential Oil to my Almond oil but more often than not, I now just use Avocado Oil. Also, I invested in a pair of hairdressing scissors circa 2019 and have gradually learned how to cut my own hair. My daughter cuts her own hair too and her hair looks fabulous. I have also found no need for any fancy shampoos. I did try using baby shampoo but it still comes in plastic. And I discovered even just a cheap bar of soap is good for washing my hair. I have used a few drops of Rosemary essential oil in a jug of water to rinse my hair but I'm aware essential oils can be costly. If no access to growing my own plants I'm thinking camomile or peppermint herbal tea will rinse hair just as good? The only other thing I want to say is, I am yet to try diatamaceous earth to see if it can indeed strengthen my hair & prevent hairloss.
I've used olive oil occasionally.....it's funny you should mention it as I was thinking then when my current bottle of almond oil runs out I want to find something else....almonds are not great from a sustainability point of view. And yay for chamomile tea for our hair! 😀
Thoroughly enjoyed this and lots to take on board here, this is my one area I struggle I actually regularly declutter (give away) but I still end up accumulating it all back somehow. I'm finding if I squirrel it away in drawers it's even worse as i forget what I've got. I need to try harder with this one. I'm following along and loving all these videos, thank you xx ps also I am seeing greys at a few months shy of 40, its been hard to accept tbh but weirdly I am getting used to it and trying not to freak out.
My first grey came as a bit of a surprise too.....and I really hated it for a while......but I've come to embrace them all now and cherish them. As for your clutter (good on you for trying to declutter) maybe you could initiate a rule for yourself......if you bring something home you must get rid of four other things before you can bring it in the door!
A couple of ways to use less if that’s what needs doing first. If you buy a very thick conditioner, use it as a detangler on wet hair. A tiny dab will do shoulder length hair. A bottle lasts me at least 2 years. Use color enhanced shampoo as an alternative to a dye job.
I haven’t colored my hair in a long time. I also only really wear makeup for videos or for taking nice photos. Mascara though especially because it’s going right near your eyes should really be replaced every 3 to 6 months tops. It grows bacteria and you can easily get an eye infection. You can actually just get a reusable mascara wand and use something like vasilene or olive oil instead dog mascara.
@@WhatVivididnext I would be interested in how that works out. I have just been using an eyelash curler for quite a while now, but my lashes are fading along with my hair 😂
My grandmother used to talk about making a setting gel from flax seeds.. I think they were boiled and strained out of the setting water. Playing around with this, someone might be able to come up with a hair spray for body and hold.
Great video, Vivi...as usual 😊. I haven't used any make up for about 4 years now. The last time was for a wedding. It's all been thrown out long ago. I've never dyed my hair - ever, but I used to say to my hairdresser that I would wait until the grey creeps in and then see how I felt about it. Well, my lovely hairdresser emigrated around 6 or 7 years ago and I have trimmed my hair since then. I have white hairs beginning in my dark brown, but I'm still not tempted to dye it yet. The cheap disposable razors are perfectly horrid. I inherited a man's razor off my husband and that's been brilliant. I've been using it (infrequently) for around 3 years and haven't changed the blade yet. I bet you smell of rosemary from your hair rinse 😆
Hi Vivvi about hair cuts l keep my hair short before Covid l was paying about ten pounds every few months and l managed that ok l have never coloured my hair l still have a lot of my own colour and lm 75 yrs old so will never feel the need yes l do have some silver coming though BUT Vivvi l went to the hair dressers last month and l didnt ask the price and l had just asked for a cut and my hair was just growing slightly to long and it cost me £32 l payed went home and vowed never to go again so yes l will have long hair and if lm not sure l will wear my beanie hat lol so yes that was a lesson to remember to ask the price Thank you Vivvi and l just use shampoo wash and go and soap and a lovely bath or shower xx
I've been wearing my hair all gray for many years. I like them very much. One of my kindergarten children once wanted to know if my hair had once been a color. I agree. After thinking about it for a long time, the sentence came: "Oh yes, but now you're old and at some point the color of your hair has been lost!" (You could put it that way). A former young co-worker once asked me what conditioner I would use because my hair would be so shiny. I said I don't use any, just hair soap. She didn't want to believe that. I don't use mascara in the garden either. It bothers me a lot when it's hot and you have to sweat a lot. But, as with so many other things in life, everyone has to decide for themselves. 😊
My grandma always used to say, when I was washing her hair, that it used to be darker......she'd say 'I've washed it so much the colour has gone'.....let us all be happy to wash the colour away and live our best lives!
Hi Viv, I'm all about saving money, growing organic fruit n veg, scratch cooking ect. However, Viv colouring hair is a science that is not an easy to do yourself at home. Skin testing b4 applying is essential to avoid allergic reactions & knowledge of the hair colour wheel is important to avoid disasters, of which alot of hairdressers, myself included, can testify to upon their return to work & very costly to put right. Henna is great on hair with colour but best avoided on grey or white, unless you like salmon pink or curried egg green! 😆 I can usually spot a home colour because of the dullness of colour , stripey colour bands through poor application. It took me 3 years to qualify as a Hairdresser and learn it science, its not so easy to pick it up at home, even if you do watch TH-cam!💇♂️💇🏻♀️ And if you do want to have a go, tread careful 🤞
Oh wait, I will have a glass of redwine with your chat.. Girlchat! I have one length hair too, I go to the hairdressers twice a year. I use a hairclip to keep the hair from falling down into my face. I have never colored my hair or treated it in any way, that saves a lot of money. I do pluck any greys though, luckily they are not too many! I do not wash my hair every day anymore either. I keep my hair in a bun when I go to bed. It makes the hair airy and nice for longer. Face - I really enjoy to have my facial routine, no matter my budget. I clean with cleansing product, then I use a serum and a good facial cream. I do no longer use the fancy expensive products. I use a cheap one from Loreal, you can get the products at the grocery store. You know, at 54, I need some help. Actually, I am going a bit greener.. I bought some eco moroccan arganoil to replace my serum! I am not dressed without a little lipstick! 😅For my body I use a olive oil soap bar. Lasts forever, and leaves the skin feeling soft. Have a wonderful evening my friend, I am a mother hen at the moment, all my baby plants have left home today, they are in the polytunnel, and I´m about to go out and cover them with a blanket! 🙈
Oh I LOVE my olive oil soaps....they're in every washing 'station' in the house........perfect for the job! Yay for a wee nip of wine for our girly time, I love this! Now, go tend those babies. 😉
I tried solid bar shampoos, but they made my really fine hair break and fall out.. thus causing even thinner hair. Also, no savings (ever) - reduced purchasing but just general living has increased (rent $50/month) which has come from food budget. I'm glad for my small patio garden.
I love this video! I've been down to bar soap (hair and skin) and shea butter for years - make my own calendula balm for when I need a bit of extra care etc. But then I haven't been to a hair dresser in my life - my mom has always cut my hair, I've cut my own, my daughter has cut it - but I simply don't trust strangers with it ;) And when I want to wear make-up, I ask my teenage daughter 😉
L100? Yeah, waaayyy out of touch! 😂 For a hairdresser, color, shampoo, conditioner, I’d multiply that by ten+. I’m so not ready to go gray yet but I barter with my hairdresser. I handle his books and I get an awesome cut and color every six weeks. So lucky to have that. I do want to investigate some of the bar shampoos and conditioners to be greener. But I could never give up the pedicure…it’s the guilty pleasure.
I am not sure I could go as frugal as you, did it through my 20s and 30s, but going to start working on being more so. Do you worry about the rising costs and are you growing a few extra vegetables incase any are swiped?
I try not to worry about the rising costs but, of course, they are on my mind somewhat......I will try to cram even more into the garden this year for me and for trading with others......I hope nothing gets pinched....we are quite a secluded site though so I doubt that would happen....
I love you Vivi , but I’m a hairdresser and if everyone does this I’ll have no customers left 🤣. In all seriousness though,I love your chats and look forward to when you post x
I have never had a manicure/pedicure in my life! Don't really wear any make up anymore, not much nail polish either, not allowed in the health care setting, don't bother with hair conditioner not either
Carrot red hair as a young child, auburn as I went into my twenties, and in my early 30's I yearned to have grey hair...now in my 60's and although the colour has changed, I'm still not blinkin' grey, I'm furious!!😂😂
Love this discussion! I ditched manicures, pedicures, nail polish (I do own one bottle that I use to label things), hair color, and most makeup except mascara and lip gloss. One bottle of shampoo lasts me a year as my hair is really short. I pay $15 every other month for a cheap haircut and trim around the ears in between. What do you do for deodorant or do you even use it? I recently discovered plain baking soda and love it. I just dip a fingertip in water and get an arm pit wet. Then dip the same finger into the baking soda and apply it to the pit. Usually 3 applications cover one pit well. Repeat process for other pit. If I don't shower for a few days, no problem. Zero odor. Some people might get a little rash, but I've never had a problem. I use Bob's Red Mill which is all natural baking soda (non chemical). Best of all, one bag lasts a whole year for very little money.
I agree with most of the products we can either do without or cut back in number, but I am celebrating, because I finally ditched my cable and I'm saving $55 per month. I don't know what you have over there for watching TV, but I bought a Roku for $30 and I'm very happy with using it. I also have Amazon Prime, which I purchased for the shipping, but it includes the prime channel, which I use a lot, and I have been watching a series called Bramwell, which is set in (I think) London in 1895. Are you familiar with it? Blessings...
Great video! I do look forward to not coloring my hair. However, my hairdresser recently informed me, " the good news is that all your new hair is coming in a lovely white... the bad news is that it's only in stripes on either side of your head...like a badger!"
Yay for a lovely white......I reckon you should go full on badger......paint a few whiskers on your face and you'll make everyone smile that sees you. 😉💖
For the last ten+ years I have used almond oil.........but I want/need to change from that as it really isn't a sustainable oil. At the moment I honestly don't know what to do but I'll keep you posted.
For years I have been using the solid one from Lush (can't remember the name but it has Patchouli in it). I use it because when I went plastic free all those years ago it was the only option........I think there are LOADS more choices now so it will be a case of trial and error!
My head is so sensitive my hair is baby fine going to a salon is torture to me, plus my hair goes all the way down to my arse it costs a fortune, I do it myself. I got out of the madness a long time ago with coloring even though I worked in a man's world with law enforcement standards I was the defiant one =) my hair is already a multi color brownish auburn grey. No savings as of yet, still bobbing with payments. I haven't bought clothes since 2019, amazon is off limits at this time and grocery store I try to go only to the aisles that have what I need. Thank you Vivi for this video you look wonderful darlin.
@@WhatVivididnext I did have to buy a pair of rain boots when I move here 2019 with the snow it gets muddy and around my garden to save my sneakers I've had for years. I'm not really materialistic but I love my books (non-fiction) and I have many on my wish list. Here where I'm at there are very little 2nd hand stores with used books not like Florida =( even the libraries in Florida had a huge book section books for sale like a $1 a piece that was my heaven =) anyhow Amazon is not very ethical, very micromanaged and have sadly destroyed the mom & pop stores (just my opinion)
I do colour my hair, I use a vegan non permanent dye and it does brighten my day. I use my accumulated boots points to get them and have enough to keep me going for the year. Makeup means less to me the older I get, I’ve some in my bag that’s over 12 years old so yes it’s time for a clear out. I sugar wax which I make up myself and consists of simply lemon water and sugar so dissolves beautifully and doesn’t impact the environment.
I have been watching your gardening videos for years and have gotten some very good tips from them. I don't always agree but that's ok, nobody agrees on everything. I have found your comments on hair and makeup to be not totally correct and insulting. If I don't agree with the way someone [male, female or other] wears their hair, makeup etc. I say nothing. Its their choice to spend whatever on their personal products. I can not cut cloth very well, much less my hair. I've had 2 haircuts in about 2 yrs. my hair is a simple one length bob. Please don't judge so harshly when you don't know peoples circumstances and put it being helpful for saving money.
Oh my goodness....I am NOT judging harshly .......just suggesting ways folk can save a few pennies and pounds! I never, ever judge someone by their looks....and said this in my video. If you take this video as insulting then it is your interpretation which says about you and not me!
Bring on the gray, after seven children I am proud to sport my grays, I am a grandma after-all! 😉 This was my favorite frugal talk yet. Blessings Vivi.
Yay for the grey!!!!! 😀
Cold pressed olive oil used as a face mask ,skin and hair moisturiser. Cheap and effective and it works. Blessings.
Hi Vivi, you are absolutely right. I color my hair at home but thinking on going grey. And I found a quote that says :" If you want to be beautiful, start with your heart"; Thank you for your videos.
I let my hair go natural wirh gray 4 years ago.....one of the best descions I ever made I get comments about how great it looks !
Me too Johanne. I was so tired of dealing with my roots and paying for salon treatments. It took a bit of a mind shift but 4 years out I'm loving my gray and like you said, one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Yay! I'm loving this!!! 😀
Yay, good on you lovely! 😊
Always eager to watch this series! 💚
Thank you! 😊
Yes for cutting the ends of tubes!!!!! So much more product lurking there!
Yay, good on you for embracing the grey.......and a very warm welcome to you here. 😊
Hear, hear! 😀
I'm just watching an old Monty Don programme on French Gardens (the gourmet garden) where he's focusing on people who grow their own food in an attempt at self-sufficiency - a convent, cafes, individuals - makes me think of you!
Oh I LOVE that! Thank you so much Clare. 😊
My hair has been grey white for years now I love it. I use Ivory soap to wash with for over 50 years. I use cornstarch for deoderant. Makeup haven't worn for many years. I enjoyed your chat today. Thankyou Vivi
Please explain the cornstarch for deoderant....thank you
Yay, good on you lovely...a lass after my own heart! I haven't tried corn-starch yet......but it's next on my list. 😊
@@tracyd2320 Hi Eileen .......I think the corn-starch thing is a simple as using it like a dusting powder/talc......dab it on to absorb excess moisture. I guess you could add some essential oils for scent?.....
@@WhatVivididnext oh thank you kindly...I will most definitely give it a go, scent free will do fine.
Thanks again.

Hi Vivi.
Yay, good on you lovely....you're a lass after my own heart! 😊
Yay!!!! Good on you lovely...let it grow out in it's own way!
Yay for panty-hose for the toms! I'm so glad you like the shampoo bars too.......I'd never go back!
Hahaha....yay for age and the disappearing hair......I'm beginning to notice that too!
I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I have eye lashes like you and very dark circles so I’d look dead at work. I just go in 1 time a week so I don’t wear it otherwise. I do want to learn to trim my hair though.
Hahaha...I hear you looking like death....my body hair is so blond it's invisible!
I let my hair grow out grey when I was around 48..im 65 now. I love love love my gray hair❤
Yay, good on you lovely! 😀
I to have a simple hair style. I to cut my own hair. I haven't had my hair professionally cut since 2017 .
Yay good on you lovely.
I used to dye my hair pink but I cant do the back on my own. So gave up. Got a few white hairs and they are sparkly, wish it would all change.
Yay for sparkles in our hair! That's how I view mine now and I get excited when I see a new sparkle!
Thanks so much Vivi enjoyed the chat, there are so many things we can really do without and should love this series. ❤ xx
Exactly! Here's to doing with less and being happier in the process!
Good on you lovely......it's so liberating to let go eh?! 😊
Living more true to ourselves... yes, there is the key. I am going grey, and admit with menopause creeping on, that I felt a bit like I was fading away. But then I found that I could choose instead to live and try to be most myself, and that is a bit more adventurous, I hope! 💕
Yes, absolutely! Good on you lovely!
@@WhatVivididnext 🥰
I keep my hair natural, natural grey highlights. At 63 I am happy to have healthy and thick hair.
Yay, good on you lovely! 😊
Hahaha.....good on you lovely! Embrace those beautiful lockdown locks! 😊
Great video I started using shampoo/conditioner bars over 5yrs ago and love them i get a 2in1 from poundland and my hair loves it and has never felt betterxx
Oh that's fantastic! I'm so glad that shampoo bars have become so much easier to find/buy. 😊
Fantastic! I love this. 😀
Yay for our 30 year old torture devices still going strong! 😉
I think lockdown taught a lot of us that we can do it for ourselves........yay for a positive out of a tough time!
Yay, I love this! It can take some adjusting to if you're accustomed to wearing a full face every day....but so worth it for the freedom! 😊
I've ditched the shampoo/conditioner! I'm now conditioner only. It's lovely on my curls!! Have a lovely day, Vivi!!
Yay!
Oh my goodness....Felicity to Boris......that's too funny! 🤣
Missed this when it came out so just caught up. Just ordered an epilator using boot points built up over the last three years. Teenage daughters. No more disposable razors for me.
Yay, good on you lovely....such a fab way to use your points. I hope yours lasts as long as mine.....it'll pay for itself in a couple of years. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext Yep, one day I'll find the right one.
I stopped using hair conditioner after you mentioned it a few weeks back, I can't believe that I've been using it for so long and didn't need it. I found it hard to find a conditioner that didn't flatten my hair anyway.
Oh I'm so glad you gave it a go and that it's working for you. Yay for another saving! 😀
One ‘positive’ I have from the last couple of years is that I don’t rea ch for the mascara the minute I leave the house. I have blonde lashes so no definition without it, but realised actually I really don’t care! 😊
Yay! Good on you lovely!
I colour my daughter's hair at home, I can't find a best by date on her packet. She buys it at Poundland so extremely frugal!!! I am rocking my silver 😁
Good on you for rocking your silver! I'm so excited to see how my hair will look when all the grey comes through!
Yay...good on you for transitioning! I'm with you all the way!
Wow....that's an amazing saving!!!!!!!!! Good on you for ditching the routine! 😉
Wheatgrass powder and black roasted sesame seeds are a great way to slow down or even reverse grey hair.
Is that for consumption or application? 😉
@@WhatVivididnext Internal. Also organic backstrap molassis is great. All these things are also giving amazing health benefits too.
You weren't kidding Vivi; you really are naturally gorgeous! Lovely chat as always. I've always cut my own hair, now 60% grey but I love it. I make your Calendula oil and balm so now my skin looks fab too. So happy to know your channel! Dx
Awww, thank you so much Diana, I really appreciate this....I'm so glad you had a go at and now make your own calendula products - yay! 😀

Oh yes to using a lip-brush to get that last bit out!!! And hurray for earning and proudly wearing our greys. 😀
Hello Vivi.
I did used to pay for haircuts twice a year, since you showed how you cut yours, I started cutting mine.
During the beginning of the craziness I even cut my daughter’s your way. Great video!👍🏼 😉💗💗💗
Good on you for embracing your natural colour......crikey...it would have been so expensive to keep it coloured! 😊
I take my sunscreen and make up off with some cheap olive oil. Whipe that off my face with paper. After that any face cleanser will do.
Brilliant. 😊
Hi vivi I get my hair cut once a year and I trim my own fringe at home . I also colour my own hair I bulk buy when I see it . I love having bright red hair it’s my only luxury and it. Makes me feel good . I also do my own waxing at home as Im a hairy beast 😂
Yay for bright red.......I love red hair!
It's great to hear that it works so well! I use a solid bar one......not every day...but if I'm going to be active and around other people. 😉
I love my silver hair. I get a $15 cut every other month.
Yay for the grey/silver!!! Good on you lovely. 😊
During lockdown I went through everything. Inventories helped so much. When I calculated what I used and the savings it was massive.
I am still using up from that first lockdown 😂
I also invested in a reusable razor and I love it.
As for my hair, I had no intention of hiding my grey hair. Like you say, I’ve earned it. Also, I found my grey hair bothered others more than it did me 😂
I have made my own frugal beauty routines.
The now nearest hair college is 16 miles away which I don’t think would be cost effective with the fuel cost to get there and back 🙁
I attempted cutting my own hair several times during lockdown by following TH-cam tutorials but I messed it up.
I am definitely finding the replacements more costly but it’s something I’m willing to do for the sake of the planet 🌎
Can I ask what facial moisturiser you use?
Thank you for the always fab video Vivi - have a lovely day!

Yay, good on you lovely....Zao products are GORGEOUS! I don't use a moisturiser per se.....just my calendula oil. 😊
Yep do my own hair😇brilliant chat🤗🌸
Good on you lovely. Thank you. 😊
@@WhatVivididnext That's a fantastic idea! I'm going to try that from now on. Thank you 😊

Absolutely. 😊
Absolutely.....I'm looking at old school solid block mascaras for my next one.
Oooh, yes! Old school 'gel'!
I hve done that, and it has a gentle hold, but it is lovely and softening too.
Yay, good stuff lovely! 😊
Hi Vivi, do you gave any meal plan or cooking vlogs of your garden produce? I did an unsuccessful search.

Crikey.....that's a lot of money for a cut..........hurrah for home cuts...AND beanie hats to cover up any mistakes! 😉
My grandma always used to say, when I was washing her hair, that it used to be darker......she'd say 'I've washed it so much the colour has gone'.....let us all be happy to wash the colour away and live our best lives!
the dentist wanted to put false teeth at the top because i have a gap there but i didnt to go through it
It's a tough decision.
Absolutely, cheers lovely. 😊
My dad is 79 and he's still dying his hair..... he's so vain!
Oh bless him! 😊
I tried solid bar shampoos, but they made my really fine hair break and fall out.. thus causing even thinner hair. Also, no savings (ever) - reduced purchasing but just general living has increased (rent $50/month) which has come from food budget. I'm glad for my small patio garden.
Yay for a growing space!
Have you tried the Lush shampoo bar called New? They last ages too
@@smallgardenspace6436 Not around here and I'm also allergic to fragrances
I love this video! I've been down to bar soap (hair and skin) and shea butter for years - make my own calendula balm for when I need a bit of extra care etc. But then I haven't been to a hair dresser in my life - my mom has always cut my hair, I've cut my own, my daughter has cut it - but I simply don't trust strangers with it ;) And when I want to wear make-up, I ask my teenage daughter 😉
Yay for DIY.........and a teenage daughter to occasionally refer to! 😉
Yay for bartering - I love that! Hahaha....yes, I am rather out of touch with so much by way of cost these days. 😉
Haven't used conditioner for years. No difference at all!
Exactly! 😊
I love you Vivi , but I’m a hairdresser and if everyone does this I’ll have no customers left 🤣.
In all seriousness though,I love your chats and look forward to when you post x
Aww, yes, I do realise this......one of my besties is a hairdresser.......don't worry......the majority of the population will still come to you! 💖
@@WhatVivididnext I know, only teasing 😊.I’m just as bad …it kills me to pay to go to the hairdressers, I try to do it all on myself! X
I have never had a manicure/pedicure in my life! Don't really wear any make up anymore, not much nail polish either, not allowed in the health care setting, don't bother with hair conditioner not either
Ditto! Good on you lovely. 😊
i have white hairs coming through from my ginger hair i dont wear make up
I'm so jealous of your natural colour.....hahaha....I always wanted to be ginger!
Carrot red hair as a young child, auburn as I went into my twenties, and in my early 30's I yearned to have grey hair...now in my 60's and although the colour has changed, I'm still not blinkin' grey, I'm furious!!😂😂
Hahahaha. Oh the hours I spent plastered in Henna to try to get my hair a lovely carrot colour! Lucky you! 😀
Yay, good on you lovely. I use a solid bar deodorant.......it lasts for ages and zero packaging. 😊
Yay for the cable ditching and the more economical telly options! Love it! 😀
About makeup...I recently watched an hbo docu, if any makeup has talc in it there is also asbestos in it...can cause mesothelioma 🤯
Yikes!!!! All the more reason to make our own products!
@@WhatVivididnext It could be a new thing...
Go for it! It will look fabulous
What carrier oil do you use to make your oils?
For the last ten+ years I have used almond oil.........but I want/need to change from that as it really isn't a sustainable oil. At the moment I honestly don't know what to do but I'll keep you posted.
The outside you carries a smile magnificently,,xx
Awww, thank you Sandra, that's very kind of you. 😊
What deodorant do you use vivi.I've tried body shop solid deodorant but wasn't very effective.Going to try faith in nature to see if that is better.x
Yayu!!!! Good on you lovely! Putting Amazon on off limits is definitely a great way to go!
I still need Amazon... can’t find shoes in my area...
Same
😊
I have a friend who spends $250 weekly on a facial....I’ve never ever even had a manicure / pedicure....!
Woah!!!!! That's bonkers! Well, if she can afford it go her!
Oh my…. She must be a diva!!!
👍👍💕
Thank you Suzie. 😊
Vivi, what deodorant do you use? Xxx
I use a balm type that I swipe underneath my armpits. It’s in a cardboard tube and NO plastic 🙌🏻 I would highly recommend 😊
Solid bar, paper packaging no waste. There is a Video under TIY playlist. Hope that helped. Blessings luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦
A bar version from Lush. Zero packaging. 😊
👏💜🌸
Thank you! 😊
Yay, good on you lovely......I totally forgot to mention the Boots points......I let mine build up and then use them for things like the mascara. 😊
l dont use make up vivi l never have lm a get up wash and go no creams or anything yes lm lucky thank you Vivvi xx
Yay, you're a lass after my own heart!
😻🙏❤️
Thank you lovely. 😊
thing is my teeth are not great
Ach, I hear you......I would love a spare £5K to get mine fixed!
👍👍👍
Thank you lovely.
I will stop the minute I stop working in Corporate America...
I hear you lovely!
Ist lol
Yay! 😀
❤
Thank you lovely.
👍👍👍
Thank you Sophia. 😊
