Yes me too!! It’s such a treat to see when she has posted a new video ! I absolutely look forward to ANY videos she puts up! Marlena was the very first creator I ever watched on TH-cam way back in 2011. I lived for her old school tutorials LOL. Over time I gotten to “know” her . I hold her in high regards and I really respect her morals ,character and the way she always tries to support other women , even when some haven’t deserved her friendship ! She’s the best and the real deal!!!

This is a really good video on basics. I got into scents about a year and a half ago after never wearing any for years because almost everything at Macys style department stores will give me a headache if I wear it for long time and ended up going the niche route. The turning point when everything started to click was to spend a day smelling things, this helped me immensely as I don't tend to go nose blind and it let me sort everything in my head. Three additions that may be less impactful for some but were huge for me:
    1) Make sure you analyze what you don't like in addition to what you like. Just like finding your favorite notes can help you tone down what you're comfortable with, finding something you don't like can help ease the amount of effort you spend smelling all the scents. I generally don't like tobacco as an example and it's rare I'll bother smelling anything where that is included as a note. I also rarely like the sweet gourmand category.
    2) Top notes can begin to wear in 15 or so minutes, but in higher quality scents they can last quite a while. If you are picky (which I am and like maybe 1-2% of things I smell and want to buy even less) I recommend wearing a scent for a full day minimum, smelling it throughout the day, to see how it wears. Sometimes I find I like a smell for 2-3 hours then it bothers me in the 4-8 hour range. This isn't a pH how it wears on you thing, it's certain notes wearing off and you having to smell only what's left. Now you CAN fix this if you find a perfume that focuses only on the notes that wear off. For example if you have a grapefruit/woodsy scent the grapefruit will wear off well before the woods do. After a few hours you could layer a very grapefruit focused perfume that doesn't have the woods scents and you've balanced your day a bit.
    3) Perfume companies often have styles, as do different types of perfumes with the brands. It's like makeup, if you're into a full face of glam Glossier may not be worth trying, most perfume brands have a style in how they pick and blend scents. As an example, I like a perfume where I can pick out the different notes and find some are a bit too "well" blended for me where everything feels like it lacks dimension. If I smell 3-4 perfumes from a brand and everything gives me that feeling I probably will stop trying that brand as I'm unlikely to find a favorable result. Additionally, Eau De Toilette scents will wear off faster than Eau De Perfume since EDP's have a higher concentration of essential oil. Some brands like Diptyque, in my opinion, also have very different smell profiles for their EDPs thank EDTs so keep an eye out on these correlating factors from brands and other distinctions you find valuable.

Thanks for always teaching us how to be good, better & wiser consumers! I’ve def been obsessed with exposing my nose to different scent categories, am on Fragrantica almost daily & have made efforts to round-out my collection to include variety, without duplicates, over the past couple years. You’re so right when you say our noses evolve - it’s so true. Some frags I loved at first have lost their charm & some I didn’t like & let sit awhile before returning to them have become favs. Please do share a layering video - I’d love to learn more about that!❤

I began searching for a new scent at the beginning of the year. I took recommendations online. I ordered tons and tons of samples. I could wear them for an entire day to see how it smelled and long it lasted. I kept a log with notes why I did or didn’t like it. It’s been so fun and I’ve discovered scents outside the Sephora / Nordstrom box.

I found the perfect scent for me, and whenever I buy stuff from Sephora, I'd pick the 2 free samples, and get samples of perfumes. That's how I found out what I love. ❤ I gravitate toward the gourmand scents. My favorite at the moment, is Juliette Has A Gun...Not a Perfume. It has an amazing scent throw, smells a little spicy and fresh, and as the day goes on, it just gets better and better!!! I'd love for you to do a video on best summer wardrobe must haves 🎉🎉🎉 😊

Marlene, all amazing accurate information. I once worked in Harrods fragrance section and did some brief training with YSL who was the last company I worked for there (at the time Champagne came out) we were taught about fragrance layering in order to extend the fragrances life and make it last even longer. To do this you used the various products all within the same fragrance line, so if there was one you would wash with the item for washing (like shower gel), use skin lotion if it existed in that line, apply parfum, then eau de parfum then eau de toilette, then if they had it a powder i think, basically you used a bunch of different layers of the same fragrance all of which released the fragrance in different ways and at different times, and WHEN DONE RIGHT (big disclaimer) it slowly released a constant and even stream of the fragrance (not overpowering) and lasted much much longer than just using one fragrance on it's own such as EDT or whatever. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Hi Marlena due to being a nurse for many years and having lifelong eczema I rarely wear perfume. I mostly use fragrance free products tbh, but for an event etc I like a little perfume which I wear over a thin layer of balm to protect the skin. I have found I like fresh scents that aren't heavy. I would never dream of buying a perfume without wearing it on my skin for a full day - fragrance smells different on everybody and you need to like the middle and base notes (not just the top notes). I rarely find scents I really enjoy from the large perfume houses (those scents you find everywhere), but the exception to that is Philosophy as they have some pretty fresh scents I enjoy for the daytime eg pure grace. My favourite is the Liz Earle No1 (with a very high percentage of pure oils) as it develops beautifully on the skin. I can't wear any perfume daily as my skin would freak out, so sometimes I wear it in my hair (hair holds scent fairly well). Best wishes.

*Excellent Advice* . I love a heady woodsy fragrance for Fall/Winter, and something lighter; vanilla, powdery for Summer. A very classy lady walked into the room and I was immediately taken aback by the fragrance and asked what she was wearing. It was Clinique Aromatic Elixer, I purchased and love it. Ariana Grande's Cloud is another favorite as well as Pacifica Dream Moon. I dabble with making my own fragrances with essential oil blends that I like. I'll use bourbon or vodka as my alcohol, some glycerin and I love to add Coty Light Musk into my blends. I agree, learn the notes you love and you'll never be disappointed.

Hello Beautiful! I tend not to wear fragrances often, nor do I use other scented, personal care products, because the vast majority of workplaces, organizations, and facilities here have adopted scent-free policies. Also, I got into the habit of not wearing anything having a scent when I worked in different areas of practice, during my career as a nurse. I don't know a great deal about fragrances, perfumes, etc., so I really appreciate, and enjoy learning more as you share your vast knowledge, educated opinions, and helpful recommendations! Love, and hugs from home, Marlena, Sherrey (who currently smells like Tokyomilk Dark's Tainted Love #62!)💕

Search man killer perfumes. Love the ones where they go the street and ask random guys to smell a few different scents and rate them. Many seem to like the sweet scents such as Juicy Couture Juicy Gold, Versace Crystal Noir and fresh like Chanel eau tendre and Dolce Gabanna Light Blue. Mon Guerlain often pops up as a favorite of men.

I love wearing spicy gourmand scents for fall and winter. However for spring and summer is kinda hard for me. I’m very picky and so many fragrances for warmer weather doesn’t appeal to. Some notes that are supposedly “same family” scent pool don’t seem to work well at all. For example Dolce and Gabbana light blue has the notes I love but doesn’t work well and then I bought travel size Versace Dylan Blue Turquoise that have similar notes to Light Blue and I like it but doesn’t last. It’s just very hard to find the one I really would wear for warm weather days. The fall and winter scents are the easiest and most flexible in the cold weather scent profile. All I know is I like white flowers in some fragrances but not every fragrance has the right chemistry. It depends how well it is mixed together to produce such a stunning scent creation.

I hate trying to find a scent, especially at Dillards or Macy's. I don't want anyone approaching me while I try things. I leave if I'm not left alone.

Great video! I would love to see a video on how to layer perfumes. I feel like I understand what notes go together but I get hung up on how many sprays of each or where to spray each one.
