Yeah they pretty much are because of the amount of script changes. I could honestly say the same thing of a lot of dubbed anime in this era. Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, and Yu Yu Hakusho all had drastically different scripts in English. While in some cases it worked like Yu Yu Hakusho where the script was very different but kept the original intent of the author and mostly just modified things like jokes and joke timing to make sense in English, shows like Yu Gi Oh, Gundam Wing, and Dragon Ball Z got butchered in localization. The old Funimation dub script is really bad, and the voice acting took a significant dip when they switched casts from the Ocean Group Vancouver cast to the in house Texas cast because the Texas cast was at the time inexperienced. And then you have Gundam Wing where the voice acting was just shit and nobody was giving it their all

Wtf, they did. I just thought it was like that in the anime because it would be hard to draw the cards correctly in every frame, but no. 4kidz ACTUALLY changed the backs of the cards so they wouldn't look the way they do in the actual card game. My guess is because they didn't own the rights to the actual card game, they were only allowed to dub it, but that just doesn't make any sense. I can't for the life of me figure out why they would change it, that's just more work.
Starry Serenity guys, product placement is not allowed at things directly aimed at children. Since the show directly impacts the real life game, it is considered a product. That’s why they can’t show the real back in the dub.
It is kinda great that they were able to show the cardfronts in the pyramid movie. Sadly, the english version is even more trash then the rest of the dub there because the movie was originally commissioned by 4kids.

4Kids dub might be good on the outside but it has many stupid censors and cut scenes and completely changed dialogue because it's for kids and they mustn't be exposed to bad stuff
Currently watching this on crunchyroll and have to say it really epic with joey (Jonouchi) who wanting to see his sister happy. After the torrent of being separated due to parents divorce and slowly losing her sight . I never knew how emotional this series was :')

Honestly I don't think nostalgia should really play a factor. Even without nostalgia, I think the English opening is still really cool. But, say...Dragon Ball Z. I never liked it as a kid so I have no nostalgic connection to "rock the dragon" and MUCH prefer Head Cha La as a result.

The first 3 dvds they released both a uncut and standard version these were published by funimation with uncut japanese and edited 4 kids dub. They only published the first 3 like that and I'm not sure why.

Exactly. Yes, 4Kids butchered the show, but it’s not exactly their fault. America is a prude country in general. Sex, religion besides Christianity/Catholicism, and many more things are extremely taboo and 4 kids obviously knew this. They might have butchered some amazing shows, but the popularity of YGO and Pokémon wouldn’t be as big today if it weren’t for them.

Ah, the first season of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime brings back so many memories. It's what got most people in the card game in the first place. What strikes me as funny is that now knowing the actual rules, I found out over 90% of the plays shown are either against the rules or don't work the way they are supposed to.
The game wasn't fully developed yet, which is why stuff like Catapult Turtle launching Gaia to destroy Dark Illusion's ring causing it to crash and destroy the field is a thing. Things started making more sense as the seasons passed, but they still do alot of illegal stuff, use banned cards and have decks with realy crap synergy

I feel like the two intros are kinda reminiscent of yugi and the pharo. The Japanese version sounds more like yugi being soft but brave were he'd give it his all, while the English version is the pharo with his confidence and skill being displayed through the music

Since watching _Fullmetal Alchemist_ and more adult anime dubbed with Japanese openings, I'd begun to wonder what _Yu-Gi-Oh!_ and other kids' anime (didn't even know it was more than just cartoon in my childhood) openings sounded like in the original versions. Now, after around 20 years, I've finally seen this opening today. My life is nearly fulfilled.

I remember this from that rare "uncut" bilingual DVD that was briefly available long ago. Those DVDs are one of the big trophies in my anime collection, after seeing how much they go for online. I am super glad I had the foresight to buy those when they first came out while I had the chance.

Ryucario Yu-Gi-Oh translates to Game King, Yugi in the series is the King of Games, so they do refer to him as it in a way

Não só a BR. A americana também é assim. A nossa dublagem é dublada por cima da versão da 4Kids, que foi a responsável por dublar Yu-Gi-Oh aqui no ocidente.
Ao menos na dublagem BR o narrador do início que explica sobre as relíquias do milênio é o Marik diferente da versão em Inglês e em Japonês em que é só um narrador mesmo

Since watching _Fullmetal Alchemist_ and more adult anime dubbed with Japanese openings, I'd begun to wonder what _Yu-Gi-Oh!_ and other kids' anime (didn't even know it was more than just cartoon in my childhood) openings sounded like in the original versions. Now, after around 20 years, I've finally seen this opening today. My life is nearly fulfilled.

I remember this from that rare "uncut" bilingual DVD that was briefly available long ago. Those DVDs are one of the big trophies in my anime collection, after seeing how much they go for online. I am super glad I had the foresight to buy those when they first came out while I had the chance.
