I bought one of these about 20 years ago and it has served me well. I change the tires on my vehicles and several other peoples cars. Have done over 500. This thing is still going strong. I got a 4x8 sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and mounted mine on this plywood. I have no garage so I remove it and put both pieces in my shed till next time, also helps if I do a roadside tire change.
Same here. We hear a lot of complaints about the bead breaker too flimsy & this guy destroys the star clamp now. 20 years ago they weren’t this flimsy & I think not all of these are not created equal.
Where would we,... meaning us "You Tubers",.. be without guys like you, that is an awesome set up. now I know what to do with my Harbor Freight tire changer. Thanks
I made an adaptor to mount mine in the trailer hitch socket on my truck. Nice more height and good work bench.
excellent job on the mods! i've been looking at the HB tire contraption as well, and considering mods already. i can never leave well enough alone, plus being a machinist/fabricator....my tolerance window is much smaller than for most folks. you've got some great ideas here! thanks for the video.

I welded old double axe head at 45 degree angle for bead breaker(matches angle rim angle) middle hits first
I bent the long bar that came with mine. I cut the ends off and welded them back on a piece of 1 inch thick wall pipe.
Good idea's. I just bought one of those today from Harbor Freight for $37 after coupon. I only wish that they would make these things just a little better so that it would be more strong from the factory. I took my first tire off with it relatively easy with it and the tire tool they sell for $6. It really help.
another thing you may like is to buy a duck bill for a tire machine for $20.00 or so on amazon or parts to tire machine on Eastwood.com site for $13.00 but if you have a lathe buy the duckbill and mack the center tube that extends out like a tire machine

Thanks for subscribing! I had mounted it to a pallet made of 2x4s, but it still moved a bit when working. Securing it to the floor works best from my experience. If you can't weld a nut to the underside you can just use a nut and hold it with a socket or wrench.

Why cant you put it in the floor there? Do you not want to leave it there? Then you can do what I did. I have a way to temporarily bolt it in my driveway in front of my garage. I drilled holes and inserted threaded inserts just a little below the surface. (I have a very thick concrete driveway which is a foot thick in front of my garage) When not in use I put shorter alloy bolts in the inserts with a washer to keep them from rusting or getting contaminants in the inserts and then when I want to use it, I back out the alloys and put regular longer bolts in to mount the stand. Before taking the alloys out, I blow around the bolt heads to clear away any dirt. I found these really cool inserts that widen at the bottom and have flare outs to prevent twisting. I did make a larger hole and re poured concrete around them so it was not a pressure fit. This listing is just an example but not the one I used. I used a bigger bolt set up. 3/8 I think. Thank you very much for a tip with closing the holes for bolting w/other shorter bolts. I also want to use that machine in a portable way. Since the holes will be outside in our backyard (maybe it will fit in the patio, but still it is kind of outside) I thought how to prevent hole threads from the rust. Your idea is just brilliant, you can put some grease inside (I plan to put there that expensive Cooper Anti-Sieze Permatex Lubricant) before bolting in those short bolts, the holes will never rust!

I can drill, but can't weld. Do you think the nut on the other side will hold without welding it to the tire changer?
It will hold just fine if you tighten everything with a pair of wrenches. If your wheels have a lug nut instead of a lug bolt you can drill a hole and use a bolt with the appropriate length and thread pitch fed up from the bottom. Then you would use your original lug nut on the top side. Hopefully that makes sense.
Watched the video again! I mostly work on Volkswagens as well, where did you get the nut for the bolt? Also, how did you make that bar that screws in to hold the wheel?
Are you still using this tire changer? Do you recommend getting a different one?
I made a weld nut out of some bar stock that I had lying around. I center drilled and tapped it but you could just drill a hole in a piece of plate steel and cut out enough material to weld to using a grinder or a bandsaw. The aluminum cone was made on a lathe.
As useful as the manual tire machine is, I am seriously considering purchasing a used tire machine. There are plenty of things that I wouldn't even try to do on a manual machine and I just had to spend another $130 to get a set of 4 tires dismounted and new ones put on.
I think that even with his attachment, you'd still be fighting a low profile tire.
Someone needs to come up with a bolt hole plate that has different holes that have different holes for the variety of rims and hole spacings. It should not take as many threaded holes as you think. They could either make the plate bigger or different adapters for some rims with bigger center holes that you can bolt down to the smaller plate, to give you bigger center hole patterns. I have truck rims that have a huge center hole for my 19.5 gm c4500 rims. I would love a way to be able to attach them. The center hole on them is about a foot in diameter.
I've thought of the exact same thing! It would be made from maybe 1" thick aluminum and have a few different patterns on top and mounting holes on the bottom. I'd also make the center opening as large as possible so that if you put on a steel wheel with a large centerbore it'll allow some room for a larger centering cone to be able to drop into and not hit the bottom plate..
I was gonna buy one of these but because of my needs and budget I'm making my own. So far I'm only about $10 in it.
