Forest and Soil Ecology in action

Here we will explore the field work of forest and soil ecologists. As part of a doctorate project, a former agricultural land is being studied in Val d'Elsa (Empoli), where for about 20 years there has been the planting of poplar and walnut for the production of wood, to which ancillary species have been added, such as hazels and Italian alders. The forest group, originally formed by the Forests and Wood Research Center of the CREA of Arezzo, was then joined by the Dendrolab working group of the "Luigi Vanvitelli" University of Campania, coordinated by Prof. Giovanna Battipaglia, which leads dendrochronological research. Along with study the plants, the study of soil ecology was coordinated by the PhD student Tiziana Danise and Prof. Antonietta Fioretto of the Vanvitelli University. The synergistic study of soil and plants allows us to understand many different aspects of ecology, focusing mainly on the carbon cycle and the prospects for climate change.
