Its the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. When the engine is cold theres no oil in the tensioner to tension the timing chain so it makes that horrible noise, and as the engine runs the pressure builds, tensioning the chain

I'm trouble shooting this today. Pulled of the serpentine belt and the noise disappears. tensioner seems a bit wobbly but I'm going to change the belt, idler pulley and the tensioner. A couple of posts I found show an improvement by just changing the belt. The cause is the idler pulley but I'm going to do the tensioner and the belt too because I am at 240,000 kilometers (150,000 miles)
These engines do have a history of issues with the timing chain guide system and that is what I always thought was causing the noise but it turns out the idler pulley is the culprit

Did this by chance cause a chirping noise while driving? Have the same issue. Hopefully I can fix both noises with one.. i just got the truck and I'm incredibly stressed about it

Did anyone get this fixed? Mine pretty much sounds like that no matter what now...

I've done a little research and then took it to a shop, who confirmed my fears. He said that the Hydraulic timing chain tensioner were bad. that it was oil pressure that built up and put tension on the chain. yet they are suppose to have a ratchet action that keep them in place when the engine was turned off. In order to fix it it would need new tensioners and while you in there go with a new chain and guides. He showed me and engine that was taken apart that had the same problem and the chain just chewed the inside of the aluminum cover up. and all that is going in your oil. Hope that helps.

you need to get yourself a new mechanic! that's a load of bs. Read my previous comment

I have the same problem as well. Mine makes this same rattling noise when you first start it up whether its cold or warm. It's an 07 model and mines done it for the past several years. It doesn't seem to bother anything. It's just annoying.

It has to do with oil filter u use. I will get back to u on the reason and type of oil filter u should use I dont remember since its been awhile.

As i resort back to youtube, i ran across this video as im searching for videos with replacing a timing chain. The truck is in the garage and the diagnosis is a broke timing chain. I’m not mechanically inclined in the least, but for me it seems this rattling noise I’ve had these past several years have had to do something with the timing chain since it is now broke. Maybe it was the tensioner. I’m not sure. But one things for sure, the rattling noise was exactly the same as the noise in this video.

I have the same noise when I turn on the truck, but it still throughout the day, not just when I turn it on,
What could be wrong with the engine?

I got the same isssue but they said it’s sumthing inside bye the timing chain sum plastic peices on the sides of the chain and rubbs on it when they break and the chain hits against the bolt

Chris Leon my truck runs good but my buddie said it’s the timing chain that gets lose couse there sum pieces in there that break and it rubbs against it but iv been driving it like that need to repair chain smal parts in there and water pump and fan to be safer

I have mine apart now, and when I turned the crank bolt, the chain would slap the metal bracket between both sprockets. there was that much slack in the chain that when the other cam rotated it would take up that slack and slap the bracket.

This is nothing but a cheap oil filters doing. Pr design this engine require a anti flow back filter to keep oil standing ready in the oil lines. So when you start the car in the morning with a cheap oil filter all the oil that is required to stand ready in the lines has flown back to the oil pan and will need to be pumped all the way from the oil pan thru the filter to the head. This will take time and that is why the valves and the lifters are making the knocking nose for 10-30 seconds depending on outside temperature due to oil starvation. If you have a cheap filter with a shitty anti flow back valve it will probably keep sufficient oil in the lines so you don't get the knocking if you let the car sit for a few hours then restart it. DO NOT buy cheap filters to this car!

What did this end up being? I have the same sound.

i had read that it might have something to do with oil filter. The oil filter I was using (fram)would allow the oil level to drop overnight and so when u first start it in the morning it would make that sound but once you drive it around the noise goes away. So I switched it to WIX oil filter and solved the problem. Im not sure if u have the same problem though for I am not a mechanic, just tried stuff I read online.

That ticking noise is a broken camshaft actuator (aka VVT actuator, cam phaser or exhasut timing gear) see th-cam.com/video/dVfmS-dG38U/w-d-xo.html
