The name Tesla doesn't belong to that guy. Nikola Tesla is the Hero.

Why did he leave his party behind?…

way too many red flags about the setup - example the loud guy that knew too much and was acting inconsistent with previous behavior and was too pushy diverting attention from anything was suspicious etc... the girl also noticed it but was too weak willed not to follow the crowd ... the MC was a bit of a coward not to bring her along with his escape and basically abandoned her to a dubious fate.
did you even pay attention to the story?

@@WrongParadoxThe whole thing was a red flag, but he decides to chicken out at the very last second?… That doesn’t make any sense.

    TLTR:
this is MC that attempts to think and does most of the time BUT displays a significant amount of stupid. (Maybe for comedy/embarrassment value? - I lean to plot reasons)
Not as bad as some other facepalming MC that stubbornly resist learning from experience, he still makes what looks like plot forced idiocy
for a previous experienced gamer his breath of gaming experience comes across as very narrow and he makes some weird conclusions/conjectures ... I'm leaning to the author has maybe only played one game or series of games by the same publisher)
    further ramblings:
... it is like the author's primary target are people lacking worldly experience and independent creative thought and logical predictive thinking.
... or maybe they are stuck in the rut of attempting persistence and retries because (many) games have a 'Save' feature (typically single player) or 'Respawn' feature (more common in multiple player)
    - the flaw of this that they get too careless and make min/max builds or assume team player builds which favor distinct FIXED roles but as the MC mentions while valid in a game is a serious weakness in an open world with perma-death.
based on the stance, wording, and behaviors presented: the large number of candidates, pretty much railroaded into preselected teams and roles, make me think it's a setup for worldwide PVP for the gods (I'm thinking there are probably other gods, but it might be just one) amusement. Which based on the mythology of several real-world pantheons in history is consistent. Example the Greek pantheon is basically a bunch of petty children that treat humans as disposable toys and pets ... too many examples that would get redacted by TH-cam moderator algorithms - lots of nonconsensual behavior, with the victim getting punished. When you scratch below the mainstream stories, you find that some (definitely not all) of the usual bad guys such as Hades is actually one of the most faithful, honest and decent of them - and the most respected ones (such as Athena) have tantrums a significant number of times. A frequent result is a mortal (typically female) gets punished for a horny god's actions, resulting in their death or transformation into a monster which the gods then quest a hero to slay later.
non-sequitur: some weirdness is figures like Loki and Baldur both get presented as a Christ like role ... (yes, I did say Loki but it's not in a simple one-to-one mapping but more analogy overlaps in story function - Baldur is sort of much easy to understand to comparison) - you need to be aware of almost all the Norse mythology was documented (written forms) well AFTER the Christianization of the region thus the role transference. Mithras (much earlier) has a strong influence in the stories, but that's a huge can of worms. Tiamat predates this and gets a complete write-over and ends up being significantly maligned, as typical of conquered/supplanted rival religions. Rebadged/absorbed as part of the new/victors (which explains why Venus and earlier Aphrodite have some initially weird titles and aspects which is related to Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte and others... the expressions that combine love and war come to mind) or alternatively rewritten as demons, devils, evil gods, titans etc.
