In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to a live recording of ‪@nightwish‬ performing their song Yours Is An Empty Hope. It's been too long since I included a Nightwish song on the channel, and they really rocked my socks off on this tune.

Doug, I can’t thank you enough for putting me onto Nightwish. When I saw your post a few months ago for “Ghost Love Score”, like you I had never heard of Nightwish. I thought I heard you say they were requested by viewers just as much as Iron Maiden. I thought “really?” Now I know why. I can’t stop listening to them. Thank you for introducing them to me!

I discovered Nightwish back in the late 2000s & just kind of stopped listening to them gradually. Rediscovered them & have to say that I've missed out - one of the best bands ever with Floor on lead vocals. Greatest Show on Earth is the greatest song on earth IMO. =)

@@silverblack5475 Weird reason to ask Doug to do it, though. He's not a singer or vocal coach. He's a composer and professor of music. His reviews are always from a composition and music theory perspective.

Thank you from another Nightwish fan. I was trying to think of what song you would like best to listen to next, and I think "Sleeping Sun" is one of their most beautiful, and has a very interesting melodic tone I would like to know more about. Also, this is the Nightwish song people most commonly recommend for those who wish to hear something from their previous lead singer, Tarja.
And since you enjoy well-crafted lyrics it is very strong on that as well. Here are the lyrics from the song as an example -- very beautiful stuff:
    The sun is sleeping quietly
    Once upon a century
    Wistful oceans calm and red
    Ardent caresses laid to rest
For my dreams I hold my life
For wishes I behold my night
The truth at the end of time
    Losing faith makes a crime
    I wish for this night-time
    To last for a lifetime
    The darkness around me
    Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
    Sleeping
    Weeping
    With you
    Sorrow has a human heart
From my god it will depart
I'd sail before a thousand moons
    Never finding where to go
Two hundred twenty-two days of light
Will be desired by a night
A moment for the poet's play
Until there's nothing left to say
    I wish for this night-time
    To last for a lifetime
    The darkness around me
    Shores of a solar sea
Oh how I wish to go down with the sun
    Sleeping
    Weeping
    With you
Sung either by Tarja or Floor the effect is really "Aphoria"-like. I would accept the results of a poll on which version; or whatever you decide.
P.S. I have noticed that it was part of their "Virtual Concert" that you mentioned; the setlist also says that "this is the first time performed since 2016". But like you said we will have to wait for the video to come out on this one.

This was a Nightwish cruise and was really neat - the concert was the main draw and the cruise was included in the ticket price. No geriatric cases there for a nap on this ship.
I think NW does these kinds of social commentary pieces so well. "Noise" is another great example - particularly the music video; everything and anything wrong about the internet and social media was fair game with the band members in full costume playing to the lyrics which started out on the subject of cell phones with "you've become a tool of a tool". Marko plugging junk supplements and male enhancement pills, a really cute model taking selfies of everything and anything, including her own butt at one point. It was the lead off song at their virtual concert but if you choose to react to it you should go with the lyric video - it's just so well done and adds so much to the narrative.

Let me explain why you have to hear A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers from Van der Graaf Generator. It is a long song (23 minutes) ideal for a friday hearing. It has a very intriguing lyrics with an open end. It got 4 months to record and because of this was considered impossible to perform live. Robert Fripp (the guitar player wearing glasses from King Crimson) plays in 2 sections of the piece. VdGG is formed by a keyboard player, a singer, a saxofone/flute player, and a drummer. Finally, the singer Peter Hammill is one of the influences of Bruce Dickinson and Fripp considers him the vocal´s Jimmy Hendrix. What are you waiting to hear this piece?

React to some Luca Turilli's Rhapsody. Notturno is based off a Chopin Nocturne. Or react to Swan Lake from Dark Moor (obviously a Vivaldi cover)

Man, the original Rhapsody albums got a bunch of heavy play when I was back in college. I had fallen off of prog/metal stuff by the time the band went two separate ways, but it would be neat to see what happened to them.

Ben Allen I like every version of the band. Definitely check out all of them. Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody is great, I highly recommend to listen to the live album. Rhapsody of Fire with the new young singer started out weak but The Eight Mountains album is great. The newest Turilli/Lione Rhapsody isn’t fantasy themed power metal, it’s a different beast than the other versions. However they still make great music.

Regarding the Cruise Ship... Cruise Ships are BIG. And, they often have fairly large theaters contained in them. However, I think in this case, the venue was actually the top deck (the so called "pool deck") of the cruise ship.
There are a lot of cruises which are geared towards music now, so you should seek one out. It can be an amazing experience. (I personally survived the very first 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise).
Speaking of that cruise... You may be interested in another Classically inspired group who I saw on that cruise, Epica. And, on a different classical tangent, Therion. I think those two groups would be very interesting to you.
