I almost used, but they are pretty heavy and they hold each other strongly. So I think not necessarily

I used rapid concrete, it is solid in 10 min, after mixing the concrete. Red bag. You can find it at Home Depot or Lowe’s
Looks to be pea stone you put around the pit but would sand have been more fitting ?
I believe it was called river Rock, but yes sand also works. We just wanted to go with rocks
