Wire Wrapping Tutorial: Channel Setting

- In the interest of full disclosure, this video documents what is probably the 5th time I have ever actually build one of these settings with wire. -3ft 28g round wire
-3in of 21g square wire (dead soft) x2
-3in of 21g square wire (half hard) x2

No big secrets here, just a bunch of trial and error and a lot of time staring at pictures to reverse engineer stuff. I hope these videos continue to be helpful!

Excellent tutorial!! Love the closeup after you did the first setting. Really clear shot. The first one looks like it could pop up as it's not as surrounded as the rest of them but this is a great help and thanks for sharing!
I'm glad this video was helpful! I did have to go back and sift that first stone a bit later on, good eye! Once the top wires are firmly secured they act like a seat belt holding the culet of the stone down into the weave below so they don't really shift or wiggle at all. It is definitely a bit tedious to get them settled though!

These are super tricky for me! I've never really seen them as the perfect style to match my work so I haven't put much practice into them though. They can look really cool!

Hey, I really appreciate this, and all of your videos. this is a setting i havnt really gotten to work, and I just followed your instructions pretty well. Im still not sure what the issue is. I mean, it worked. but then the stones dont seem like they are super stable. I feel like if this was jarred too hard they could pop out. what am I doing wrong?

This was a good tutorial. Thank you. If your piece calls for a channel set element that is curved, is it best to curve the setting as you make it? Because I am thinking that it could make the gems pop out if the channel were to be bent after making it.

Is it possible to use this setting on a gentle curve? How do you determine the gauge of the base wires? What do you recommend using as base wires in terms of the size of the stones? Does this change if your setting different sized stones in an increase and decrease?

smathus this video actually documents the 5th time I have ever done this setting and I can only recall one piece I used it in from years ago. I am working on a piece that uses the section of channel set citrines I showed in this video though so there will be an example on my Instagram page soon!

Potentially, but I can’t say I would recommend it without a lot of reenforcement. By itself the setting is a bit fragile and not well suited for a ring

I'll post the link to these pliers, technically they are Delrin not Nylon. Delrin is a slightly stronger plastic than nylon that still wont scuff the metal. I'd like to say i bought them for that reason when my nylon tips kept wearing out. The truth is I actually bought them because I like the ergonomic handles and they matched the rest of my pliers from Swanstrom (creature of habit I suppose)

Tammie Broggins you can! It is much more difficult with soft than half hard to do this setting in my opinion though. The half hard temper enables you to work without the wire kinking and it stays in place. The dead soft gets a little squirrely with this setting
Very nice video/tutorial! I'm not sure I find the combination of square and round wires aesthetically pleasing to my own eye. Did you try this with round wire and decide that the square wire was a better fit?
That is a great question! I honestly almost never use this setting in my work (this video actually documents the 5th time I have ever even done it) so I have not really experimented with what all wire shapes work best. I imagine round would work just fine though! If you try it out I would love to hear/see how it goes
How difficult is it to curve this setting?
I have a question for you, I have tried this one and the bezel setting, and when trying to incorporate in my frames, any shaping of them results in the stones becoming loose, how do you compensate for that. Do you just have to preshape and then you're are stuck with it?
Great question!
for the bezel settings you have to be careful about where you tie them onto the frame. think of the bezel like its a spring, you want to secure the ends in a way that increases the tension on the setting/stone. if your bezel was created wrapping the wire clockwise around your pliers, you'll want your anchor points to encourage the wire to reach further clockwise if that makes sense. its a bit hard to explain without a visual, you can always shoot me a message on Instagram and i can shoot you a doodle of what i mean
and as for the channel setting, you are not alone in finding it to be frustrating. I rarely use this setting in my own work because i find it to be fickle and time consuming (and that the straight parallels dont really match the aesthetic of most of my work). getting them to sit securely and firmly just takes a lot of tweaks to the wire, make sure those top wires remain straight and firmly sandwiched onto the stones
Thank you for the tutorial, Nolan. I have a question. Did you have any issues with the top wires wanting to open apart for the stones to fall out? I tried and failed at this a few times and that was my biggest issue. Tried anchoring the top ones straight down like you did and they wanted to come apart so easily. Finally ended up figuring out to anchor them diagonally in an "X" pattern to keep inward tension on the stones. Even then, if I don't weave in the right direction it still doesn't work lol. Very touchy little setting but so satisfying when to do. I'll pm you on IG with my successful attempts.

I find this whole setting to be a bit touchy, but once I got the stones set and the wires locked down firmly they stopped shifting. It does take quite a bit of work to get them settled with the stones in place, but it looks pretty cool once you get it!
If you’re doing a channel setting with a curve, do you curve the wire first or do you do the channel setting and then work it into a curve?
I would curve the wire first personally. I find channel settings to be fairly fickle when you bend them afterwards
Great tutorial! I've never seen this type of channel setting. Do you have to use half hard wire or could you use all dead soft? Are the stones fully locked in place (don't wiggle at all in the setting)? It looks like they could pop out from the sides but I guess that's the illusion. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks!
It could be done with all dead soft, however you would need to be super careful not to bend the top two wires. Once those get bendy this setting gets really tricky. The half hard does make this a lot easier. If you only have dead soft on hand you could draw your wires through some nylon tipped pliers to work harden it first
Once they are set the stones do not wiggle at all and are very firmly set :)

I think the double wrap mistake that you made in the middle is not so bad if only you did a double wrap on the other side it kind of gives it a little character I think

I enjoyed watching the video to learn a new technique. only 1 problem. You are so used to just whipping the 28ga around the base wires, that I could not see which wires were being wrapped. If you could slow that part down, the video would be perfect even for us beginners. Im still going to subscribe & post to Pinterest, because I enjoyed watching. Im sure I'll be able to come back at some point & say - now I can see it.
You can manually change the speed for any video by changing the playback speed while using the TH-cam app. Locate the 3 dots in the right upper corner of the video (if you don't see it then tap on the video and it should pop up with the pause, share, full screen, ect buttons). Click on the 3 dots, then playback speed. I'm not sure if this menu is also available when using a web browser or computer.. If it is, it might be located in a different spot like under or to the side of the video.
