CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Karen (Meryl Streep) is given a special honor before leaving Africa, and says goodbye to Farah (Malick Bowens) at the train station.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Out of Africa is drawn from the life and writings of Danish author Isak Dinesen, who during the time that the film's events occured was known by her married name, Karen Blixen-Flecke. For convenience's sake, Karen (Meryl Streep) has married Baron Bor Blixen-Flecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer). In 1914, the Baron moves himself and his wife to a plantation in Nairobi, then leaves Karen to her own devices as he returns to his womanizing and drinking. Soon, Karen has fallen in love with charming white hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford), who prefers a no-strings relationship. A woman who prides herself on her independence, Blixen finds herself unhappily in thrall to a aloof man -- and doubly unhappy for living out such a cliché situation. Although Redford received a lion's share of criticism for his too-American performance, Streep has rarely been better, and the film's perfectly measured pace is offset by David Watkin's stunning location photography. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 7, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Adapted Screenplay for Kurt Luedtke, and Best Cinematography for Watkin.

I live around here ..Ngong hills is still a beautiful place and the Karen estate(named after her) is still a respected suburb in Nairobi.
For me, the whole movie builds up to that moment when the club members, who ejected Karen the first time she wandered into the bar, invite her in for a farewell drink as a sign of their respect. Very moving.
She could have said something caustic but, being a lady, she simply thanked them.
I LOVE this movie. There's so much going on with the multi-layers of plots. So much beauty, made more so because of all the pain.
one of my favourite movies ever! lived in Denmark for 5 years and Meryll nailed the accent. Thay have a very distinct way of speaking english
athina663 Not even close. Sounds north european at best. Could be any germanic language.
The members of the all Male club inviting Karen for a drink to show their respect always puts a lump in my throat. Beautiful movie.
Lellobeetle A strong, strong woman. Or human being. Truly admirable.
n.b. When she enters their club, they all rise to their feet.
@@monsider To this day she remains the only woman to drink at the Men's Bar in the Muthiaga Club.
Muthaiga club is now an elite golf club whose membership is rich people both men and women.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Can watch over & over.
Amen!
They don't make them like that anymore.
Meryl Streep, best actress ever, and she is stunning as Karen Blixen...
I don't agree. She's annoying and unsympathic in this movie. Overrated actress, certainly not the best, even though many brainwashed media-victims say so.
Sorry, Sandy, that is laughable, IMO.
I've watched this clip a few times in the years since I watched the film and I just now noticed the slight smile that appeared on Karen's face after she was told the members were inviting her for a drink. She was clearly trying a hide it, she looked at the floor and it was gone when she looked back up. It revealed itself for just a moment. That is such great acting. Wow.
I feel like this is definitely one of the strongest performances of her entire career… too bad it didn’t win her an Oscar
Big difference from when she came in when she first arrived. She was promptly informed she wasnt permitted in there.
Upon leaving you feel like they would have fought to keep her if they could
Apart from the love story between Karen and Denys I just love how Karen’s life is beautifully portrayed in the movie. Going through all kinds of losses, not to mention her lover’s death but the faith in her husband and other white settlers, her fortunes, and even a ground to stand in Africa, where her heart truly laid..but even to the end, she stood with the pride and walked with the best poise as if manifesting that life can not destroy her soul, ever. How can anyone not respect her? Truly a strong woman she is. A strong soul.
How can you love both husband & lover? Isn't it not some kind of cheating?
@@koushikdas1992 Karen's husband cheated on her several times and contracted her with syphilis. And there was nothing between her and Denis until Bror left Karen and the farm.

The proper way a shot of whisky should be drunk - out of a pint glass.
Farah Aden - the one man in her life who loved her totally and unselfishly.
He understood what a remarkable person she was. Her strength, her compassion, her inintelligence, her humanity. He was the one that actually knew & valued Karen Blixen.
And he represents the fact that Africa was more compassionate than not to Karen Blixen.
I think that’s exactly right. Watch how astonished he is when Karen fights off the lion with a bullwhip. Dennys is self-absorbed & really only ever did exactly as he pleased. But to be fair he knew that.
One of my all time favorite movies.
I have often wondered how Malick Bowens felt about playing one of the most dignified characters in all of cinema. If you want an example of superb acting in a smaller supporting role, look no further. Simply masterful, and moving, and it quietly told the important story that he was a rock for Karen.
So true. He really added SO much to the story.
One of the most proud-representing figures in movie history.A heart melting scene.
I loved his character & Malick's performance!
beautiful scene. makes me weep every time.
My favorite bit is the lions at the end.
More than once I used to fall asleep watching it on TV and wake up just before that part.
I knew exactly when to wake myself up.
There is a video on TH-cam I just found that is of the *real* Denys Finch-Hatton grave site.
Gives me several small shivers watching that one too.
It has the same poem that she read in the movie.
Pretty stunning. It's worth watching.
Go find it if you can.
Is it really so that 1980s were the apex of our western civilisation? It is pretty hard to find something of this sort in 2019's movies.
cried so much
I am not usually soft but i cry whenever i watch this movie 😭😭😭 So much beauty, love and harmony through the hardships of life 💗💗💗
Iconic scene, without a doubt.
I was in Nairobi in 1985 when Out of Africa was being filmed. I can't believe looking back that I turned down the chance to be an extra in some of the group scenes where they needed white males to stand around. I have kicked myself about this a thousand times. We love Kenya. We lived in and near Nairobi for two years, and our older son was born there. I have been back there nine or ten times. Most beautiful place on earth. Kindest people also.
I love this scene! I love this movie.
karen was a classy lady
One of the most poignant, beautiful endings to any movie, but this clip cuts the last narrative moments short. I can't find a last scene that's not violated.
I want the *final* final ending.
The very tail end (sorry...tails?) with the lions is for me what the whole movie leads up to.
Can't believe they didn't bother to even finish that final bit.
It's *that* bit that gives *me* the shivers every time.
We need those lions. Give us back our lions. In full. Complete. Roar.
I feel like the lion and lionness on the grave at the end are the spirits of Denys and Karen, returned to the African plains that they loved so much, together at last.
Has anyone ever managed to watch this scene without crying each single time? Not me! 😭
A public ovation. Unfortunately, things change. Sometimes, we must make our own way. An excellent legacy. Earth colours are sacred.
Standing her a drink--saying they were wrong and are sorry. Forgiveness--she accepts and even says thank you. Fast forward to 2021 when there is no forgiveness, only hate. Where have we gone wrong?
You don't seriously think that era wasn't chockfull of hate, right? I assume you're kidding.
@@royrowland5763 You need to watch the movie. I was commenting on something that happened in the movie that wouldn't happen today.
I can relate the part were lion come and visit finch hanton's grave to my grandpa which his bulls lay on it
You couldn't let that beautiful final scene with the lions finish?! WTF?!! What an insult to a fantastic movie.😠
Agreed
To all the guys out there; this isn't just another chick-flick rental, it's the real deal.
Agreed. I tell people that "Out of Africa" is the one chick flick I will watch again anytime.
It's way up there in my top ten favorite romantic movies.
I'll see this coming up on our Spectrum Premium Channel and set it to record every time. My wife can't resist it but who can? It gets to that sweet spot where strong, independent, but feminine women do love real men; for being men - that's what I love about it - she isn't in love with him because he's sensitive and shares his feelings. The way he talks to her, she knows who she is in his eyes, she impresses him, intrigues him. She knows he loves her. He knows she's a rare woman, and no single person commands more of his respect; but she wants more from him than a man she loves could ever allow. She resents him for it, knowing that's why she loves him.
Really well done without leaning on melodrama. The dialogue, the cinematography, the acting: if Redford is a flat actor, he has never hidden it so well. Not a chick-flick at all!
It isn't really a chick flick, it's more in the vein of epic stories of human history, where the protagonist sets out on a grand adventure. Just here the protagonist is a woman, and yes, romance is part of that adventure. But love and emotions aren't solely the province of women, at least not to real men.

Sutch a sad farewell ,you are Karen ,Sabu 😢
The ending is so profound. Sad, but not for a moment overdone. I rewatch it often.

Clearly the unsung star of this movie. Judy and Buzz
ONE of my favorite...
As I remember the scene from the movie the Countess proposes the Club members a toast 'To Africa' to which they heartily concur!

Thank you. Give us the *entire* ending now, would you please?
Sigh.
Oh, well.
Someone will probably post it sometime.
Someone always posts nearly everything you are looking for, if you wait long enough.
(Is that a moral of life? No, just TH-cam. Might work reasonably well for life too though. ^___^)

It's true
Good production, but the actors are not really authentic, bad casting....
I'm thumbing this shit down because a movie called out of africa should have africans.
You clearly didn’t watch the movie.
