  • Out of Africa (1985)
In 20th century colonial Kenya, a Danish baroness/plantation owner has a passionate love affair with a free-sprited big-game hunter (IMDb)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Clarinet concerto in A major, K. 622 - Adagio
It was written in 1791 for the clarinetist Anton Stadler. It consists of the usual three movements, in a fast--slow--fast form (Allegro-Adagio-Rondo). It was one of Mozart's final completed works, and his final purely instrumental work (he died in the December following its completion). The concerto is notable for its delicate interplay between soloist and orchestra, and for the lack of overly extroverted display on the part of the soloist (Wikipedia)

As a Dane, Isac Dinesen aka Baroness Karen Blixen is an icon. Her maiden name was Dinesen and she married Baron Blixen - a real womanizer and he gave her syphilis and no children. Her time in Africa (Kenya) ended badly - Bror Blixen was more interested in spending the time with all kind of women than to actually run a coffee farm - so her affair with this adventurer (sorry can't remember his name just now) was not only for a short affair, but she really loved him (and he probably did love her)
She went bankrupt and returned to Denmark and wrote the book 'Out of Africa' - plus a lot of other books and stories.
One of my neighbors is Kragerup Estate - owned by the Dinesen family - yes the family of Karen Blixen
I can only recommend to read her stories if Out of Africa is the only one you know
I think the movie is a beautiful memoral to this remarkable and strong woman (even Arthur Miller and Marylin Monroe thought it important to meet her)

It kills me every time I see her reach back for his hand. She reminds me of my ex-girlfriend and we held hands a lot. But she is part of the woke mob, and I am not, so she left me sadly, for no good reason. I still hope and pray we can one day find a way to have both love and mutual acceptance of our differences. Such a waste blowing a beautiful loving relationship over minor differences of perspectives. "They" have divided us. Can Americans reunite and see through this subversion?

I recommend anyone who loves Africa to read "I dreamed of Africa " by Kuki Gallmann. Its a lovely read.

Christmas Eve my father had a stroke. I had mixed a tape of Out of Africa and Somewhere in Time. It was on a loop and as I spent my last day with my Dad it was playing quietly in the background. When I got ready to leave Daddy said he had enjoyed the music and so I left it with him and told him to enjoy it. I used it to put me to sleep every night. I did not know then that it would be the last thing we would share. He went to heaven listening to this beautiful music. He never expressed any joy of music that was classical, so glad I gave him something to look forward to hearing more of now.

This is my all time favourite film in combination with my favourite clarinet piece - takes me back to two places in time at once, one 58 yrs ago when I played this piece for my Grade 8 Clarinet exam and another place of bliss 51 yrs ago and for a completely different reason - both were lost to me and so finding this is blissful. Thank you.

"He even took the gramophone with him on safari. Three rifles, supplies for a month, and Mozart.
He began our friendship with a gift. And later, not long before Tsavo, he gave me another - an incredible gift: a glimpse of the world through God's eye. And then I thought, "yes, I see. This is the way it was intended."
I've written about all the others not because I loved him less, but because they were clearer, easier. He was waiting for me there. But I've gone ahead of my story. He'd have hated that - Denys loved to hear a story told well.
You see, I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. But it really began before that; it really began in Denmark. And there I knew two brothers. One was my lover, and one was my friend. I had a farm in Africa...
I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills. I had a farm in Africa..."
This is the narration in the great movie called "Out of Africa".
The Author, Karen Blixen, and Ernest Hemingway were both nominated for the Noble price for literature in the same year. It is said that Hemingway declared that after he had read her work, he thought that in the face of such talent all he could do was put away his own typewriter and never write again. Even though they admired each other, and even though both of them loved Africa as much as their own lives, they never had a chance to meet each other. And even thought Hemingway thought that she was better, it was he who won the prize.
Both Hemingway and Karen Blixen are long gone now. Africa is still there, though. And Mozart? He was born on this day, 27 January 1756. And Mozart lives forever.

Many years ago I lived in Cape Town, the most beautiful city in Africa and I I regularly went for a walk in Tokai forest, one of the small forest at the foot of Table Mountain and there out of almost nowhere came the sounds of this majestic piece of music, I then notice a cottage which I suppose was that of the forest warden. It was so beautiful, I had to sit down and listen till the end, there in the beauty and serenity of a wooded area in the centre of a world city unfolds this music, as it was written for that very moment. No wordclass symphony hall can surpass that experience
