  • On November 25, 1863, US General George H. Thomas' Army of the Cumberland was tasked to take the earthworks at Missionary Ridge's base. However, his men not only took the works but continued up the ridge, eventually puncturing the thin Confederate line and routing the bulk of the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

Excellent series. I wish all the National Military Parks did this during Covid. Greta job. Love visiting there too.

"Fueled by instinct and adrenaline, MacArthur, an 18-year-old first lieutenant recently hospitalized with typhoid fever, grabbed the flag and ran full speed at the Confederates. After one hour of intense battle, MacArthur was the first Union soldier to summit Missionary Ridge."
For that action he would receive the Medal of Honor. He would also father ANOTHER Medal of Honor recipient, who would receive that honor, in another war,.....General Douglas MacArthur!

The last time I was on Orchard Knob was about 50 years ago and it was a great disappointment. There was trash and graffiti everywhere. I hope the Park Service has rectified those problems.

Joseph Hooker, with the 11th and 12th Corps, had been sent to Rosecrans shortly after Chickamauga, before Grant had taken overall command. When Grant replaced Rosecrans with Thomas, Hooker was now directly under Thomas. At some point before the battle, Hooker and the two corps officially became part of the Army of the Cumberland, under Thomas who was under Grant.
