This one is a great breakdown. Jamiroquai is a great band, but they are heavily inspired by funk music. To musicians, many of these songs use the same chords and progressions so I wouldn't say they consciously copied but it is a fresh take on the motifs of these songs. From a music theory perspective, its just telling us why those songs work and sound the way that they do.

Stevie wonder meets the bee gees is probs how you'd best provide a comp for Jamiroquai, so that's super rad!!

Great work brother. Months ago I spent 3 class periods with my music theory class on this tune and my own analysis of it. So glad to hear your thoughts on this wonderful tune. Never noticed the obvious melodic similarities to Stayin' Alive! I focused only on the chords because it's all circle of 5ths stuff. Love the modal interchange (intro/outro) and use of the Augmented Dominant too.

MG estate would love it to have found this : ) Joking aside, if you know about the 60s, and 70s jazz/funk/soul music, you realize that Jay Kay & Co. have a deep love for and understanding of this music, and that they have really studied the greats. Check out Cosmic Girl for example... Reminds me of The Gap Band's "Baba Baba Boogie". Maybe you can do a video about this Nick?

lots of songs use this "2 of us groove" Everytime we would have a gig, our band would warm up the crowd (and our instruments) with variations of this progression and randomly cycle through all the different songs that extend from it. Eventually... maybe 30-45 minutes in, the vocalist would show up on stage and finally sing one of these songs.

I think the most interesting thing about Virtual Insanity is that the verse's chord progression is only 3.5 bars long (14 beats long). In the first verse it switches back and forth between 3.5 and 4 bars, but the second verse keeps the 3.5 bars structure.

@@JazzDuets I'm 100% positive that the second verse is structured in phrases of 14 beats. I would notate it as 3 mesures of 4/4 and one of 2/4. I hope I made it clearer.

Guys we have to understand and accept the fact that you cannot reinvent the wheel, you can only put different tyres around it. So, music, as we know it, is in a way the same. Would you say that "sweet home chicago" is a copy of Blue Monk" just because they both use a 12 bar sequence of 3 chords (I-IV-V)? Or would you say that between "What I do for Love" and "Just the Two of Us", there is plagiarism? I, personally say no. They are different songs. Just accept them for what they are and let's comparing and scrutinise for the slightest similarities we can find. Just enjoy the music! As a professional musician, I hate the excessive copyright pressure that is deterring natural creativity. Anyway, this my opinion. I know that not every will agree and I would love to read what you think. :-) Take care all!
