Insane video: Tornado hits wind farm- Captured by drone in 4k

  • Drone video of a dusty tornado near Crowell, Tx on May 4th, 2022. A supercell thunderstorm produced many tornadoes during the afternoon. As it was crossing the highway, the drone was able to capture the vorticies dancing before going across a field then exploding on a dirt field. It kicked up a huge dust cloud and hit a wind farm.

Stormchasing has really come into its own the last several years. The shear number of stormchasers out there now, the quality of the ground and aerial videography, radar applications, and "collaboration" sites such as Ryan Hall, Y'all, have really increased the awareness and quality of the information being distributed out to the public. No more does the public solely have to rely on the NWS for their information about potential weather threats. Thanks for all you do!

How ironic that the tornado hit a wind farm. Those turbines didn't seem too bothered by the tornado which is a very good thing since a piece of one of those monsters coming down on anything would crush it for sure. Great footage.

@Patricia Nelson, yea I liked how it was almost like, "Hmm so these puny things have constructed a wind farm over there, well I think I'll just take a stroll through and have a look at it...", lol. I'm glad no one was hurt. At first I wondered if it might damage the wind mills and send debris out at vehicles if it didn't actually head towards vehicles. Of course @X said they were there and it went over their vehicle and later tossed a truck over a house in Lockett TX. Thankfully I've never had that kind of encounter. We did have one tornado, 137mph winds come through here a few yrs ago. It stopped a mile from my house. I never saw the funnel just the spinning clouds above, the sound of the wind that you never forget and of course damage occurring in the distance.
For lack of better terminology, I did see a "ghost tornado" come from that thing down the street perpendicular to us. It was carrying some dust and debris about 50 ft? up... I said "No it's got to go..." and thankfully it just vanished and dropped the debris. It looked like a war zone at the entrance/exits of the neighborhood. We have multiple tho so we could still get in/out. We were out of power and everything else about a week. Some precious souls from churches etc., were coming out to the neighborhood bringing food, water etc., which I told them we were good best to give to neighbors that have kids...
The crazy thing is, it had been nearly 100 yrs since a tornado like that was in this area about 10 miles from that one. This particular storm traveled nearly 50 miles "picking up the funnel" & setting it back down... One person died unbelievably, when he was driving and a tree came down on his car yet two rear seat passengers were unharmed. It's just crazy how some things happen.

Too big for a reasonable dust devil. Your first next thing to think about should be a landspout, which is a lot like a dust devil in the way it forms, developing upward from a heated ground. But larger and connected to a larger updraft associated with a Cumulus or Cumulonimbus cloud that does not have to rotate, but stretches the rotation from the ground further into the sky.
However, this one here was a real mesocyclonic tornado. You can clearly see the storm cloud above it rotate at the moments when it's visible. And the description under the video clearly tells us as well that it was a supercell.

Incredible. One critique that goes for almost every tornado video captured ever… Please tilt up to see the air column up to the base of the storm to help the viewer understand the full scope and massive scale of these incredible forces of nature. The ground contact is cool, but tilting up, even briefly, would help people understand that oftentimes it can be a half a mile to a mile from the ground to the storm’s base.
    Awesome video.

I didn't realize a tornado had two structures. First there's the obvious funnel which is hard to miss, but what I noticed on the footage is that there's a large swirling cloud that extends from the base of the funnel on the ground.
I think that cloud is what tricks a viewer on the ground into assuming a tornado is closer than it is, since the structure extended quite a bit from the actual funnel and that could easily cause them to misjudge how incredibly huge the storm actually is.
It's cool to be able to see these things close enough to make out details yet distant enough that the flying debris doesn't endanger the camera or obscure it.
Thank you to the author for generating this incredible footage.
I hope this kind of thing becomes more commonplace and we can glean more insight about such extreme weather.

6:20: A gustnado or possible other tornado is blatant behind the focus tornado on the right side of the screen. And yes, I consider it maybe being dust from a moving vehicle, however it is morphing in shape too fast to be that.
    Edit: Totally two gustnadoes.

the white truck is from the NWS and are studying this whirl wind vortex to compare the similarities between them and tornadoes. the other cars think that it's a tornado because the NWS truck is following the vortex.

Drone footage gets better and better. This may be--no, IT IS--the best drone tornado footage ever. You ought to market it to the windmill manufacturers, because that's something they need to show any skeptical buyers concerned with a turbine's durability.
This storm is really well documented! There are a lot of videos of it (although this one is the best). I hope some of you can piece together your footage, because you have it from all angles. Is that another funnel starting up in the background at 6:20?

What's the over-under that the vehicle driving into frame at bottom 1:45 (or better yet, doing a 3-point 180 at 6:59) is Pecos Hank?
EDIT: having rewatched Pecos Hank's video, I'm 98% sure that's him doing the 3-point turn and passing vehicle parked on grass shoulder (7:10) pointed the opposite direction.

Nice shots! It couldn’t have been too bad. It didn’t even leave a mark on the ground, which is preferable. It’s scary how they can almost be invisible if there’s no dirt to pick up. Creepy! It looked like it was dancing when it picked back up again. They are beautiful and devastating all at the same time!

I’ve seen the damage that a tornado can do on a wind farm in the past.
The first time was back in 2012 where a tornado destroyed a wind turbine in Kansas, earlier this year near Austin and then again yesterday in Texas.
The tornado here must’ve been relatively weak because no visible damage was done from what I can tell.
