Telomerase is an enzyme that adds bases to the ends of telomeres, which are the natural ends of chromosomes. Telomerase activity is important for preventing telomeres from shortening and cells from aging:
Telomerase in young cells: In young cells, telomerase keeps telomeres from wearing down too much.
Telomerase in aging cells: In most human somatic cells, telomerase activity decreases with age, resulting in telomere shortening. This shortening can lead to cells undergoing senescence or apoptosis, which are processes that contribute to aging.
Telomerase in reproductive cells: Telomerase remains active in sperm and eggs, which are passed from one generation to the next.
